Thursday scent of the day 9/15

Posted by Robin on 15 September 2016 272 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing my old friend Hermès Vetiver Tonka.

Reminder: 9/16 will be Harvest Moon Friday: wear a fragrance with a nut or grain / cereal note. If you don't have one, you could think of another note associated with the fall harvest season — apple? hay?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Chinatown (pretending their is rice in this one :)!!) over a base of Winter Holly body oil (fir balsam absolute 10%, labdanum 10%, White Lotus amber blend , lavender in a base of sweet almond oil)…later I will be testing DSH Jacinth de Sapphir (thanks to my fragrant fairy!)

I’m wearing Missoni, the 2006 version. It’s supposed to include the scent of chocolate with hazelnuts (yum), so it sort of fits this week’s theme.

I choose to believe the Missoni 2006 fits the bill due to its hazelnut ganache aspect. I’m planning to wear it on Friday. 🙂

The list of possible scents for Friday reminded me that I haven’t worn Tom Ford Black Orchid in a while, so that’s what I’m in today. Lush and earthy, with all that swoony vanilla at the base: it’s fantastic stuff.

I’m sampling the new, unnamed Byredo today. The top is great, interesting greenery, peppery…something. And the base is a smooth, comforting pile of classy wood and iris. The middle is violets. And I’m on the fence with that note. The violet part starts a little like the fantastic violet in lheure bleu, but then there is a part that’s more like Misia – witch I really don’t agree with.
    A most interesting scent.

Field Notes from Paris for me today. I almost couldn’t wear it because my sample spray vial was acting up and not spraying anything out. Luckily, I was persistent enough to get it working and then finish off the vial. Another one used up!

SOTD is Chanel Coromandel. I wasn’t thinking of the theme when I woke up – one of my dogs has been sick and waking me up every two hours to go out. I am feeling a little out of it due to interrupted sleep and this is helping!!

Hope your dog gets better soon! Mine often has tummy troubles and I can relate to the up all night part. On a scent note, I tried in vain to get the smaller size of Coromandel. Unfortunately, none to be found. Still considering the massive one, but would have to host a split. I would never get through 6+ oz in my lifetime!

    Happy Thursday!

    1) Am almost completed unpacked, thank goodness- just have to put away books back into the book shelves and set up the stereo system. Quelle dommage: My cookbooks did not make the move, so will call my old apartment complex to see if they have them!

    2) Am in Belle du Soir, one of the limited edition Anthropoogie/Le Labo collabs. Very lemony/woodsy/incense scent, and powdery on drydown. I know that this was a ‘meh’ for some, but for me this is rather nice on a early cool fall morning.

I am in Kenzo Amour Indian Holi. The soapy aspect of this fragrance bothers me for moments. I really have a problem handling sandalwood. Otherwise is a nice, comforting, fluffy creamy vanilla with cherry blossoms and some steam rice and berries.

Good to know I’m not the only one with sandalwood issues. When it’s blended with the right elements it’s fabulously wonderful, but when not … there’s something almost tactile-y squishy about it. Maybe what reads as soapiness to you?

Maybe. I always have a though time wearing Samsara, 10 Corso Como, etc. They are beautiful scents but I get that “soapiness” that annoys me greatly.

I have a hard time with sandalwood as well. For me, it’s not soapiness but rather an unrelenting sweetness that wears me out. I’m not sure if it’s from the sandalwood itself, or the blends I’ve smelled. I should probably hunt down the real thing, too.

There are a few perfumes that smell close to or just like the real thing to me(Mohur, Champagne du Bois, Bois des Iles, vintage Samsara). There are other’s that list sandalwood as a note and it smells like some other generic wood to me. I have a small bottle of Mysore sandalwood EO from the Indian grocery store and it smells amazing and scents one of my drawers very nicely.

I suspect that something I own must contain harvest grains or nuts, at least in theory if not actually detectable. But toooo haaard to figure out. I prefer to use my nose, to my noodle! I may have to resort to the wisdom and humor of my perfumista colleague Koenigsberg–and rely on coconut–a fruit, not a nut… albeit a bit of a stretch for fall harvest season associations–at least in my hemisphere.

But I shall enjoy reading about what everyone else decides to wear tomorrow!!

Chiming in from Ky. to say that tobacco gets harvested in the Fall as well. I think that would open up a world of perfume possibilities. I’ve never been a smoker, but nothing smells better in the Fall than the barns drying tobacco leaves.

Love tobacco in perfumes! I lived in NC for a bit and have a vivid visual memory of a nearby tobacco barn that I passed on my way home from work. The setting sun would shine through it, back lighting all the hanging drying tobacco leaves, edging everything in gold, the mountains slowly getting darker and deeper in the background. So gorgeous!

SOTD is Huitième Art “Poudre de Riz”.
Plus side: I’m ‘on theme’ for the community challenge.
Minus side: this is, for my tastes, too feminine and too short lasting.

Very hard to get a decent night’s sleep in these hot humid nights that Paris is going through. And of course work is busier than ever, so I am feeling the sleep deficit.

I sympathize with the lack of sleep due to high heat and humidity. I hope you at least have air conditioning because a fan just doesn’t cut it.

No, the Parisians don’t really do aircon sadly, so it’s just a case of lying on top of the bedclothes and haveing the windows on and the outside rollerblinds shut (slightly cooler at the cost of hearing all the street noise).

At work it’s really almost funny, the English, Irish and Scottish turning on the aircon (very happy with a cold room) and the French turning it off (seem to have a much higher tolerance of the heat and do not want cold air near them)

Sooner or later the weather will break and I’ll be complaining about grey skies and rain. :^)

The number of times I’ve heard “Well, you know that AC gives you a cold!” in France is simply ludicrous. Don’t they understand germ theory and/or comfort? The one person in lab who HAS AC doesn’t use it unless his apartment hits > 90 °F.

I wish we had those outside rollerblinds in the U.S. (Perhaps they exist somewhere, like Florida, but not in the Northeast.) Not that I would trade them for AC – life would be very difficult in the DC area without AC. But I’d love to have both.

My indoor comfort zone is ~78F regardless of the season, but even warmer in the summer is better. I started out with a dabber and then got a bottle. I have to say that I don’t think spraying has added more character, just more longevity. In fact, I don’t find it to have much character to begin with. It’s a bit of an innocent wallflower, but I really like it anyway. Sometimes I just want pretty and unchallenging.

The upside of a short-lived perfume is I get to try something else in the evening. So SOTE is “Black Magic” by Sebastiane.
      Top: tonka bean, vanilla and amber;
      Mid: jasmine, rose, blackberry and frangipani;
Base: patchouli, leather, grass and vetiver.

My first thought when I applied was “Oh Lord, I’ve changed my pink cashmere top for a backless black velvet dress!”. Then I found myself intrigued by a somehow ‘realistic’ floral note, in the way that a real flower can have a lot of green or sharp notes alongside the sweet. In the end it didn’t strike me as overwhelmingly feminine (in fact some Fragrantica reviewers think it swings masculine, which seems a stretch to me).

Anyway, this is very nice and I will likely re-test or maybe get a small decant. I won’t want it very often but it’s unlike anything I have.

Good morning, all! I’m in Oeillet Bengale today, mostly because I couldn’t quite remember what it was like. Sort of a jangly, sour opening, and now it’s humming along like a more austere version of Safran Troublant with the addition of a heaping helping of incense. Thoroughly pleasant, but I’m not quite sure it’s what I was in the mood for today.

I think it’s lovely. I’m a sucker for Rose though. It isn’t dark or deep like Une Rose or POAL, but it does have warmth. It is a lighter rose, but it IS more intense than Eau Rose, and not as fresh. I would classify this one as a year-round rose option.

    Tea is Lune Rouge.

SOTD is Dame Perfumery’s Orange Blossom soliflore on one elbow, and Atelier’s Pomelo Paradis on the other, both courtesy of a perfume fairy. As per my usual, I love the Orange Blossom which has obliterated the PP which I liked but will have to sample alone cuz I can no longer smell it at all.

Yes, a bit like root beer or coca-cola.

I am surprised by how much I think it b/c sometimes sweet orientals go what I call “barbershop” on me 😉 and it is a bit too sweet/powdery for my taste…Oriental Express treads into this territory for me but I do think it is a great fragrance. JdN doesn’t cross over into that area for me.

I don’t know if you like the root beer accord or not 😉 but Boucheron’s Trouble is even closer to root beer in my opinion.

Oeillet Sauvage is a gentle scent when I sniff it from my sample vial. Yours could be defective, but perhaps you could try it again tomorrow.

I had something like this happen to me when I tried some new Atelier Colognes samples. They smelled like alcohol when I sniffed them the first time. The next morning they smelled great.

Hello, good morning, good thoughts to all. 19 got me through yesterday like an angel, like a perfect lady, like the spine-infusing warrior-woman perfume she was of yore. Maybe our rocky times are over! Today, I’m relaxing into my beautiful Ambre Narguile, about which I have a slightly rueful story to tell. That is, I feel slightly rueful. A dear team member was in Oz last week, and went Hermes. We had agreed to split a box of the 15 ml Hermessences. She wanted just one, so I asked for Muguet Porcelaine and back ups of Vanille Galante and Ambre Narguile. Anyway, she arrived at work burdened with many parcels, and we happened to meet in the lift just when I was fetching coffee for an infirm colleague who has trouble walking, and she handed me the little orange Hermes bag to save herself from dropping it. When I reached our colleagues’ office, I was balancing coffees, my wallet and the Hermes bag, and i handed my ill colleague the bag while I sorted out a place to put down the coffee without spilling it….she assumed it was a gift, and is now enjoying my back up bottles! I just didn’t have the heart to say, “Well, no!” She lost her husband last year, she’s really awfully ill, and when you think about it, what’s the loss of a couple of small back up bottles to a perfumista’s collection? Fortunately, she didn’t like the Muguet and asked me hesitantly if I would be hurt if she gave it back to me. I said gravely that I wouldn’t be at all hurt because the purpose of travel sizes is to be able to explore different perfumes. and I do like the Muguet, just not as much as the AN or the VG.

And I must say, I am enjoying her enjoyment of her new scents. She was previously a signature-scent girl (Jardin de Bagatelles, I think); now she has a tiny wardrobe of choices, and she seems to be deriving a lot of pleasure from matching her perfume to her day.

Nez a Nez Marron Chic. It is slightly powdery, very sweet and definitely gourmand. Every time I catch a whiff, I find myself craving a pastry, etc. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth normally, either. I think it smells great but don’t wear it often because I don’t like dealing with the unfulfilled desire for dessert.

Speaking of hair trim, I got my hair trimmed (maybe more like cut because I asked to have 2 inches taken off) 2 weeks ago. A co-worker whom I’ve only seen through telepresence noticed it and remarked at the difference. And then she said her hair has not grown much since January! At the rate I get a haircut (once every 4-5 weeks), the bottom of my hair today was on top of my head a year ago! I should stop complaining about how fast my hair grows as I would rather that than my hair not growing!

Yes, it’s definitely better that it grows than not. Mine doesn’t *seem* like it grows quickly (I go about 8 weeks between cuts), but it must do OK because if I don’t get my fringe trimmed at 4-5 weeks, I end up not able to see! …That seems odd that your co-worker’s hair has grown that little. Maybe she should check over her nutrition!? Or heat styling habits? Or her eyesight? ????

Hola, fragrance lovers, I hope everyone had a terrific Thursday. I wore Eau de Guerlain non-stop, re-spritzing whenever it faded. It was a delightful way to enliven a day at home.

    SOTD = Valentino Uomo

On theme this week. This is woody nutty creamy sweetish, leans masculine at the beginning and develops to purely unisex. The Donna version is also nice and I will purchase it when the price is right.

Scary happenings at Penn Station this afternoon when a homeless person ran amok and attacked 2 policemen with a meat cleaver! I was not there and decided to delay my commute home by doing some retail therapy at Bergdorfs, taking full advantage of the Gift Card event. I will put up one of the items for Splitmeet with the pro-rated discount. I also sniffed nost of the Les Exclusifs EDP and they smelled the same to me. Wait, Coromandel smelled a tad bit abrasive, but that could just be my imagination.

One more day before the weekend! I really really need it. For those who would like to celebrate something other than Harvest Moon, Saturday is exactly half St. Patrick’s Day. Go Green!

I just find it weird that the guy was described as “emotionally disturbed”, quite an understatement considering he brandished a meat cleaver! Who walks around with a meat cleaver?
