Wednesday scent of the day 9/14

Posted by Robin on 14 September 2016 164 Comments

Fimo clay pendants

It's Hump Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

[And I know some people are still wondering what perfume they'll wear for Harvest Moon Friday, so I made up a quick list with some possibilities yesterday in response to a comment from jjlook. If anyone would be willing to add to it, please do!]

I'm wearing Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Kaleidoscope, again.

Reminder: 9/16 will be Harvest Moon Friday: wear a fragrance with a nut or grain / cereal note. If you don't have one, you could think of another note associated with the fall harvest season — apple? hay?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Happy Hump Day, all! Life has gotten extraordinarily busy post-summer vacation, between papers that need to be published, a largely imaginary thesis, and wondering if I will ever find a job or if I’ll be out on the street holding a sign reading, “Will do a chemistry for food and coffee.”

Thanks for the list, Robin! I don’t consciously agree with it, but perhaps my subconscious does, because I doused myself in En Passant earlier this week (to remind myself of the glorious spring that’ll come back if I make it through the end of summer and winter). Today, the temperature has nosedived from yesterday’s high of 90 to a high of 63 (!!!), so I pulled out one of my favorites, which also serendipitously happens to be on Robin’s list: the magnificent Black Orchid. That wonderful chocolatey, sweet, dirty patchouli bomb has been clinging to my skin all day, and even gave off some great mango blasts earlier. I’ve missed my colder weather perfumes!

I Koyel, I hope things will work out on the job front!
I seem to remember you really liked YSL’s Nu from the samples/decants I sent you some time ago. If you are ready for a FB and would like a much cheaper but very good alternative I suggest you try the new Yves Rocher Secrets d’Essences Accord Chic. I wore it today and it smells like a somewhat softer Nu. I might even like it better! On offer it is 20 euro’s here for 30 mls.

SOTD is Fan di Fendi. The notes are fruits that are starting to ripen now, to be ready for fall and winter – pear, tangerine. Include leather and patchouli at the base and it should be appropriate for late summer. We’ll see.

SL Diam Blonde – held back and went for not too loud as we have an inservice after a day of teaching. My mood screamed for something loud and annoying to push back, but administrators don’t sit next to me, just other teachers and that would not be fair. We have six of these this year, I may resort to Vengeance Extreme by the end, it is the loudest scent I own.

I did. We have a Buddha’s Hand tree in our backyard. (I mostly gave the fruit out and made Buddha’s Hand bitter, rum, and vodka. I was going to make a “tropical” fruitcake for winter holiday season with candied peel from the backyard, coconut and dried pineapple, but I didn’t. Maybe this year.

I wanted to wear Fracas today, but I may go swing dancing in the evening and I didn’t want lingering effects . (I worry that it doesn’t smell to others like the pretty, non-skanky floral it does to me.) Instead, I’m wearing Songes.

SOTD is Guerlain Ylang et Vanille, which I don’t wear often from my precious large decant, but it is really hitting the spot today. I have determined rather late that it is one of the most beautiful vanilla fragrances I’ve ever smelled, and I am sorry that it is long discontinued. Lucky to have my decant.

Happy hump day! I’m torn between not wanting to wish my life away, yet always wishing for the weekend…

Wearing Boyfriend dry oil on my hands and dabs of Micallef Gaiac elsewhere. Perfect for an early fall day.

I’m going to add Lostmarch Lann-Ael as a lovely gourmand for your list of harvest moon possibilities. I’ll probably wear that or PG Bois Blond.

Sampling vintage Amazone. This is a case of I *should* like it due to the notes, but I simply don’t. I’ll keep sniffing throughout however long it lasts, but if something doesn’t grab me from the get-go, I lose interest. At this point in the game, I want perfume that I enjoy from start to finish. Maybe I’m cranky today, or am succumbing to being a cantankerous old fart on a more permanent basis. 😉

I like Amazone but it’s SO quiet. I wish there had been an intense version, back when the proper ingredients were still allowed. One of Hermes’ updates to classics is Rose Amazone which is stronger, but I personally find it a bit harsh. To me, Galop is more like what Rose Amazone should have been. You might try that one if you like rose.

Wearing YR Accord Chic which is very nice, similar to Nu, but softer, and without a pronounced cardamon note. I may like it better.
Longevity may not be great, but I received a towelette which may be the cause.
Will switch to something else, it is still very hot and muggy here, so it will probably be Cristalle or Eau du Sud.

I am going to have to duck out to make confession with Donatella. This quarter ends this month, right? SOTD is CdG Grace, because, you know, it’s a lot less expensive than MFK A La Rose, right? And I did need a fresh rose; nearly all decants are gone…. And the gift with purchase from Barneys was amazing!!!! I only also replaced the Byredo Gypsy Water I was out of, which in my mind, somehow justifies it.

Have any of you tried the neroli Kisu lip balm that Dawn Spencer Hurwitz sells on her site? It’s pure heaven — like rubbing joy on my mouth. It’s put me in an I-need-orange-blossoms mood, so today I’ve layered Lush Orange Blossom with Oranges en Fleurs for extra headyness. I smell pretty darn good, if I do say so myself.

It’s a very smoothly blended mossy citrus. I guessed bergamot, but Fragrantica says verbena, which makes complete sense. It is the scent of simple elegance. This is the straight Pour Monsieur, NOT the concentree version, which to me smells like generic men’s cologne.

My current scent is Wood Sage and Sea Salt. I’ve been having bad luck lately with my daily scent choices – I’ll spray myself in the morning and then as I’m driving to work realize “Drat! I wish I had chosen X!” Today I wished I had worn Jicky.

Has anyone else ever had a bad spell of making the wrong perfume choice? It’s been about 2 weeks now. I want to get back to being totally blissed out by whatever I’ve chosen.

Mon Précieux Nectar is so wonderful. Sweet but not sugary, delicious but not foody. I think it’s the subtle almondy note that does it for me. Those STC decants are great, I will miss ordering Guerlains.

The end of Guerlain and Chanel decants is very sad. 🙁 I do see many decants for these houses on Ebay…I guess individual sellers aren’t worth the big houses going after.

I’ve spent the past week doing a short survey of Rodrigo Flores-Roux’s scents but have sorely missed the absence of Arquiste down here. Still, it’s introduced me to some never sniffed before lines such as John Varvatos .. So quite interesting.
With the arrival of spring I have been watching huge smoke-like drifts of pollen from the pine trees near where I live. It will soon be sneezing season.

    Hiya NST. Everyone smells fabulous.

Following Natalya and She-ra today, I’m wearing Après L’Ondée on the left and Mon Précieux Nectar on the right.

I can’t decide. Do I like one more than the other? It’s like choosing between two favorite kittens or the two best Van Gogh landscapes. Not that I have any of those to choose from, but at least there’s Guerlain.

Morning, good morning! Another one finished! No, not a perfume (how I wish!) but a supervision. One of my doctoral students is doing his viva this morning, and the written reports were really good, so I’m expecting closure on those three years within hours! All I have to do afterwards is take him and the examiners to lunch, present him to the Vice Chancellor, and I’m done. The perfume that’s going to get me through today is 19 Extrait. It’s more reliable on me at the moment than the EdeP, and I think it’s fresh enough to keep me awake while the examiners plough conscientiously through their questions about ethno-methodology, etc. #19 doesn’t match my dress, which is deep blue with a dark rose pink pattern, but never mind. As my dear mother used to say, “It’s all clean and well paid for.”
