Wednesday scent of the day 9/7

Posted by Robin on 7 September 2016 185 Comments

Game of Thrones teapot

It's Hump Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Aftelier Vanilla Smoke. I should be drinking lapsang souchong to match, but it's too early in the day. I'm still on Bond Street English Breakfast, from Upton.

Reminder: 9/9 will be Tea Time Friday: wear a fragrance with a tea note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Game of Thrones tea-for-one teapot is $34 at Etsy.

I’m in AG Eau du Sud, we’re enjoying Mediterranean weather here in the Netherlands! Eau du Sud is like a splash of freshness and it lasts. Later on I will switch to Chamade Extrait, I found a bottle at a good price and it just arrived…

I was constantly wearing Eau de Sud over our long hot sunny holiday weekend we just had, and it was perfect. It is remarkably long lasting for an EDC. And of course, I have to applaud your choice of Chamade extrait for a refresh later in the day. You smell fantastic!!!

Eau du Sud is the perfect fragrance for those priceless warm, dry days of late summer early fall. I was wearing it yesterday, but it may be too hot and humid here today in the DC area.

Rose Ikebana, it was next to my computer as I packed up. May be a good choice as it is to be very warm today and many things would be too much. One can seldom say JCE things are too much.

I’m in Jasmine Tea (discontinued) by L’Occitane. It’s pretty much perfect for a warm day. The first few sprays smell very strongly of tea and in general it reminds me of iced jasmine tea I like to make in the summer.

I am wearing CdG: Leaves Tea which is a mildly off-center smoky tea. Wearable but with interesting plasticy smells underneath. This could be CdG Tar’s little sibling.

I am drinking more mixed Ceylon.

I am totally on edge waiting for fall… I don’t think there’s anywhere I’ve been that isn’t wonderful in fall…. We got the four seasons in CA. Subtle, but there. The long running joke was we’d get all four seasons, but sometimes it was all on the same day, which is very true. I’ve lit a fire in August in SF and worn T-shirts in February…

I was planning on Treizieme Heure but grabbed Cuir de Russie instead and went with it. We are on our way to take Haineko to the vet for her allergies. She slipped outside with the others this morning and went frog hunting on the riverbank so we will not be on time. Everybody else came running with tails held high but she was busy and didn’t bother so it took a full hour to locate her. I scheduled a drop-off appointment so we can run errands so the time isn’t critical, but Mr. Minion hates being late and is a smidge grouchy.

    Happy Wednesday!

    1) The apartment is in that “looks horrible before it gets better mode.” Tonight will be the second half of packing and cleaning. I should start a cleaning business on the side, honestly.

    2) My new sexy vacuum cleaner and carpet washer arrived! Huzzah!

    3) Because I am moving on Friday, will be doing the tea challenge NOW: Am in old school Elizabeth Arden Green Tea. Y’ALL. I used to wear this a lot along with ckONE back in the day and recently found a half sprayed bottled in stuff that I still had from college. My goodness, I forgot how refreshing and wonderful this smelled on! Sticks close to the body in cooler, rainier weather but this would work in the heat. Freaking lovely, and great to wear if you are man or woman.

No tea today. The review of IA Memoirs of a Trespasser made me pull out The Soft Lawn, which is also appropriate for the US Open. This was an impulse buy, and I’m still in a bit of regret mode. So, I figure if I wear it, I may recover that initial reason I splurged….

Off to the bank with my husband. I kid you not, but we have about $900 in rolled quarters to deposit. He had them scattered in piggy banks and jars. Literally too heavy for me to carry on my own. My local branch is closing soon, so we need to get this done to avoid a farther schlepp.

Very appropriate for the US Open. Can’t say I’m particularly fond of the smell of tennis balls, but maybe with some linden it’s not half bad.

Wow! Good job on the rolled quarters. Amazing how that can add up.

Wow! That is heavy. We had a jar of change that we took to one of those machines in the supermarket that counts it and gives you a receipt for cash exchange. It was $100 worth, and that jar was very heavy. I’d need a wheel barrow for $900!

I recently bought a lapsang souchong by Meert. It comes in the most beautiful art deco tin and is so smoky that it smells like leather.

Agreed on the Malone. I bought it when I was in the midst of a perfume crisis – traveling, ran out of what I had with me, this was what I could find etc – and it served its purpose, but I don’t love it. Now I always have piles or decants with me wherever I go!

Day 3 of Tea Week and SOTD is Mari Candida Gentile “Sideris”.
    Top: labdanum, saffron, incense, myrhh and pepper;
    Mid: sideritis (a.k.a. mountain tea);
Base: sandalwood, benzoin, woodsy notes and beeswax.

This is beautiful and comforting, good today on a warm humid day on Paris and I imagine just as good on a cold day. Given MCG does 15ml bottles, I think this is going to turn up in the post at some point in the next few weeks or months.

Work-wise I have had a day of what I would consider to be serial failures either on my part or on the part of the team that I manage. It is very disheartening, and underlines to me that I have never really felt comfortable on or with the current assignment. I am now wondering if I should continue to brave it out until the contract ends in December. I hate quitting (not least because I never had, and I’ve had several years of tough engagements where clients and colleagues liked me and saw me as a success) but I’m really not sure this programme and I are any good for each other.

Oh, tough place to be professionally, Koenigsberg. I wish you clarity of thought. as you deal with your inner debate. If you do withdraw from the contract, though, don’t see it as a failure. Instead, take it as the successful application of self-knowledge.

I don’t know your perfume at all, but the notes suggest to me that I might love it. Another to try. I find my “maybe one day” list very exciting. All those unknown potential glories!

I certainly recommend Sideris as a cozy-yet-interesting fragrance.

I do need to be very clear-minded about it all. I have no doubt that if I withdraw it is one kind of failure. I am far from sure sure that staying on when I don’t feel I am what the client needs, and I am not happy myself, isn’t a worse kind of failure.

I also recognise that when I’m feeling tired and downhearted at the end of a trying day is not the time to write the “So long and thanks for all the fish” letter. :^)

Ah…Douglas Adams. I’m trying to think of something smile-worthy and apposite from HGttG, but all that is coming into my poor befuddled mind (yes, That Chapter — still!) is, that you are caught in the long dark tea-time of the soul. Not quite right, and not comforting at all.

Perhaps when you go home at the end of the week, the decision will come clear? I always find that if I can get up home to Northland, and maybe go to Mimiwhangata, a beautiful place that lies on my heart, the decisions that have been worrying me will fall out of the clean air into my hands. Perhaps the same principle will will work for you up there in The Other Hemisphere.

I had a good conversation with a friend in the same business, and this crystalised my thinking. The next step is to work out how, and not whether, I move on in the right way for everyone.

Thanks Waterdragon – it is weird to discuss this on a perfume blog with someone from the other side of the world , but not a ‘bad weird’. ;^)

I love Sideris, but wouldn’t have considered it a tea scent. Thanks for pointing that out. And those 15mls are great.
Tough dilemma. I’ve quit a few jobs within the last 7ish years. The deciding factor was how those jobs were effecting me when I wasn’t at work-they were challenging in all the wrong ways. But they were long-term positions. Not sure if I’d have made a different decision if I knew there was an end in sight. I hope you find your answer.

Well, I’ve had to take a rather liberal interpretation of ‘tea’, incuding black tea, green tea, mate (hmm), “mountain tea” (oh, come on!). :^)

That’s just the thing. My friends notice how tired and drawn I am and I have bad dreams about work or can’t sleep. I have a good reputation in the industry and I’m starting to find it ridiculous to put the phone down on agents and and contacts saying I’m not available for their programmes until 2017, and then facing the next sh**storm here where I really don’t feel I’m giving my client what they want and I’m certainly not getting what I want myself.

My comment got swallowed up on the train ride. IMHO, the best time to decide to make a move is when you are enjoying yourself. It seemed you did not get a modicum of satisfaction on this contract. I assume you are an independent contractor and if so, you answer to yourself and no one else.

Taklamatan is much sweeter and has resins that add a bit of spice. Vanille 44 is more peppery, lighter on the vanilla, and heavier on the wood.

Not at all — Gathering Apples smells like watery green apples, Pretty & Pink is like an apple tobacco Turkish delight gourmand.

Equestrian is my new favorite apple scent I think. Woody golden apples.

I definitely got the golden apples way up top – kind of reminds me of a more coluptuous version of the apple in BK Apple Brandy. I may have undersprayed as I did not get much more beyond apple. Pacific Forest, on the other hand, may be worth a bigger bottle. It reminded me of a softer but just as resinous Forest Walk.

Hello, NST. I’m bounding off to work early again–That Chapter, you know. I worked for three hours on it yesterday, but I spent most of it with my head in my hands saying, “What? ” I need to be less despairing and more productive today!

The weather has turned back to cold in a nasty vindictive sort of way, so I’ve broken out The Elephant, which is trumpeting its presence victoriously. Love it, even the slight whiff of camphor in the very top. Elephant is not subtle, but it is gorgeous. I love the way it arrives and says, “I’m here. We can start now.”

SOTD is Atelier Silver Iris. Have figured out that the gravatars have only changed when I am looking at them on my iPhone. On my laptop (Windows 7), they are the same as in the past.
Looking forward to testing the new TF Orchid Soleil again tomorrow. On me, it’s a creamy lily-tuberose combination. It has a salty overtone in the beginning that I don’t quite care for (I just don’t care for salty notes, I guess, which is probably why none of the Merveilles have ever worked for me). The saltiness fades and then it’s just creamy florals. Very unlike Black Orchid, which I can’t wear at all. Am waiting for some decants of Lys Soleia so I can compare. IIRC, Lys Soleia is more banana/fruity at the beginning, though the dry downs seem similar.
