Monday scent of the day 8/29

Posted by Robin on 29 August 2016 249 Comments

Apple puzzle

Monday morning, sorry! What fragrance are you wearing?

I am still in shock from getting up so early for the first day of school. The Different Company Adjatay is doing its best to wake me up but it's hard going.

Reminder: On 9/2, our project will be How far does the apple fall from the tree? Wear a pillar fragrance on one arm, and one of its flankers on the other. Suggested by Happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I woke up this morning and felt like I needed some Sandalwood Bliss..
So I am in Samsara…my bliss

How are you doing with the first day of school Robin? Did you have time to make tea? or coffee…

You know, I complain but all I have to do is get up and make a quick breakfast and make sure my son actually leaves the house. 6:15 is just so darned early!

And I ought to stop doing it because he is 18 now — wouldn’t it be better for him to just do it himself? Another notch towards “real” adulthood?? Yeah, that’s my thinking 🙂

Probably. I learned all that from my mother-in-law, who made all of her kids fend for themselves in middle school for things like making lunch, getting places on time, tidying ( or not) their rooms. They are all independent, but very dedicated to their parents.

Your mother-in-law is very wise to let her kids fly solo and learn life skills early. I have to bite my tongue and turn a blind eye while my teenagers cope with the alarm clock, the laundry, minor meal planning, and day-to-day kitchen chores on their own, i.e. if there are no clean spoons, it might be because “someone” left them all in the sink or on the bedroom floor. Better to learn now than later.

They will really thank you later, if they aren’t already, in a non direct teenage way. Our son recently thanked us for making him do something himself that he complained bitterly about 10 years ago. It was unexpected, but so nice to hear.

How are you finding the Adjatay, Robin? I wouldn’t have thought that a “narcotic” leather would be much help with wakefulness. 😉 I’m in a completely different sort of leather today: Heeley Cuir Pleine Fleur. It almost feels like fall this morning – cool and crisp and sunny. It won’t last, but it’s lovely to be up early enough to enjoy it.

Yeah, I probably should have gone with a sharp citrus, but it was what was sitting on my desk. This is the third or fourth time I’ve tried it, and it’s really nice but failing to capture my affections, not sure why. Might need to put it away until the weather gets cooler.

    SOTD The work-meeting-appropriate Bottega Veneta.
I only have to be in our Bronx office for our monthly meetings, which is good since it takes me about an hour and 45 min by public transport to get there. Got an email announcing our mtg would be in the 29th so I was there bright and early and I was the only one there. Turns out it is for SEPT 29th!! Ugh. Monday, indeed. Now I’m making the hour+ trek back to Manhattan. Hope everyone’s week is starting more smoothly than mine!

You smell like a thousand bucks ???? I did a side-by-side of that with Jubliation 25 over the weekend, since they remind me of each other. The Roja is unbelievably smooth and dense, but I prefer the dirtiness of Jubliation, I think. It’s also less sweet.

it’s really spray samples (which I prefer) that evaporate, the little 1 ml vials usually last a very long time. definitely worth checking your collection over to see if any are about to die!

Wearing En Voyage Perfumes L’Hombre (not a typo – it is in fact the Spanish word for man with a French article in front, and I’m wondering what the story is behind that). I bought a bottle while at Tigerlily Perfumery in San Francisco earlier in the summer, and it’s been a bit warm for it until now. It is definitely manly, but I quite like it. The notes are listed as follows on her site (not affiliated):

TOP NOTES: Fine aged malt scotch, Spices, and Citrus
HEART NOTES: Dark Coffee and Sacred Incense
BASE NOTES: Black Oud, Coffee, Mineral Amber, Haitian Vetiver, Tree Moss, Aged Patchouli, and Musk

I like it on myself, but I’d love to smell it on a guy too.

    Hope you’re all well!

I’m trying Feminite du bois from a sample ihadanidea sent me. It’s lovely and luckily I put on a lot of it because there’s a dead animal in the walls somewhere in the building and it was quite stinky when I walked in this morning.

Yay for the scent, gigantic boo for the dead animal! Yikes.

I hope this won’t make you forever associate *that* smell with my beloved FdB (and I will of course hope that maybe it can become *your* beloved FdB too).

There’s a huge dead armadillo wedged between some rocks in my Mom’s front yard. I’m so glad not to be there right now because even when I was braced for it, the smell made me blink and choke every time I walked by.

Much to my shock out of the three the Cuir is appealing to me the most right now…don’t know why as I don’t see myself a lover of leather (not that I dislike it but I don’t always gravitate towards it)…maybe it is in anticipation of cooler weather but I have been liking some of the smokier /darker scents I have been trying lately (such as By the Fireside which I sampled in Sepora recently)…..

For me, CdR was such an instantly comfortable everyday scent that it was the obvious choice for a full bottle. I like that I can wear a spritz under my shirt in the morning and then add something on my arms later if I get inspired. It’s so much more versatile than the other leathers I love.

We were at Chanel testing everything last week. The CdR parfum was a creamy leather which you may like. I also don’t think of myself as gravitating to leather scents. It was good to have that option, since I missed the EDT.

yes, I would be amenable to sampling the pure perfume of CdR but as much as I find all three of the Chanels to be aesthetically appealing and beautiful they are not on my full bottle wish list as I would probably have to win lotto to afford them! Right now I am happy with the samples I have as my introduction to the exclusives.

And that must have been a blast sampling everything…wasn’t that where you got to try the individual notes as well? I think that is so important to acquaint oneself with the actually essential oils/single note aromas that comprise each perfume…..

Cool crisp Monday, No school (thank goodness!) but I do my closing signing tomorrow! WHEEE!

    1) Am in the last of Black Jade from the sample, and will be buying after closing tomorrow. Sprayed lavishly, it’s powdery rose and spice scent, which makes me want to compare it to Jo Malone’s Velvet Rose and Oud scent, and then to Rose de Chloe.

    2) Am in a ruffled navy tank sheath over white pants. My last week to wearing these particular white pants- then back into storage.

    3) This week will be packing and cleaning! I am thinking of getting a diffuser for the house from LafCo.

Always so strange to hear the kids are back in the US! Our Canuck kids go back the day after Labour Day (i.e. eight days from now). Of course, most Canadian school boards hang on until the bitter end of June for school’s end, to compensate for a September start.

I think I only have one original/flanker pair, which I haven’t packed this week. That would be Alvarez Gómez “Agua de Colonia Concentrada” and its offshoot “Agua de Colonia Concentrada Barbería”, the one a warm lemon-and-geranium, the other a cool bergamot-and-cedar.

Instead, I am catching up on my Blooms Perfumery subscription wearing the samples sent out for, gulp, June! I didn’t pack the sample notes but I think the theme in June was exploring the use of ambroxan in perfumery. There was even an ‘extra’ decant of 1% pure ambroxan to show the unadorned note.

SOTD is Phaedon “Poivre Coloniale”, which is pepper (lots) and woods (generic). I tried this before earlier in the year and was disappointed in its performance. I think honestly after several months of trying other stuff, I like it even less now. I find I don’t love pepper as a note, and there are better woodsy perfumes out there, and I don’t really care for subtle lightweight scents that play an “am I gone yet?” game on my skin.

I am also amused at my own misplaced sense of duty towards these Blooms packs, because if I had an ounce of sense I’d have chucked this one in the bin as it isn’t new to me (so I’m not learning anything), and it doesn’t make me feel good. Well, I shall do better next time! :^)

SOTE: Nishane “Boszporusz” Extrait de Parfum.
      Top: seagrass, cypress, galbanum and sage;
      Mid: jasmine, gardenia and seaweed;
Base: oakmoss, patchouli, amber and musk.

This one is a bitter dark green with a lick of saltiness.
Pluses: Much more heft than the Phaedon; unusual.
Minuses: Some will love it, but I don’t.

However, it was unfair of me to dismiss it as unremarkable back in July. It’s just not my style.

I wore a golden brown 70s-inspired dress to work (yes, I did look a bit like I was confusing European Commission with Studio 54) and Fleur de Chine seemed a good match. I’m sure nobody else sees the connection, but TF stuff often has a touch of Seventies’ glamour to me, and the golden details of the bottle matched the golden threads that run through the dress.

Fun outfit and perfume matching idea. I also realise I forgot to mention good brown lip glosses I have come across of late- coco by chantecaille, absinthia and nettiannia by Aucoin. All of which would actually go well with the feeling of fdc.

I decided that I really needed to wear something I love today, so inspired by the recent review I’m wearing Sultan Pasha’s Pure Incense and pondering that 3ml bottle again. As much as I love my other perfumes, every time I sniff this I am totally blissed out by it.

I’m on an interview panel today, and will be spending the entire day in a small, windowless room, so I’m wearing Vert des Bois (in a light, polite application) to help me cope. I’m pretty smitten with this one; Corsica Furiosa fans should give it a sniff. Green for miles with a gentle whiff of anise, like an herbal liquour spilled on a ferny forest floor. My husband’s take: “A wood shop, with peppermint candles burning in it.” I don’t get mint out of this one, but there is something cool and refreshing in it — the sensation of mint, minus the mintiness. 🙂

Of the three I smelled in blotters, that was the one I liked best. Maybe greens+anise registers as minty?

Just to clarify, I don’t have any “youngsters” and if I did call my own kids that, it would be kind of odd, like calling them whipper snappers or young people. Although I do refer to my step daughter as a whipper snapper. And sometimes a grommet. I was referring to the other NSTers who have kids.

With thanks to (and sadness for) the Guerlain clearance at STC, yesterday and today are for Vol de Nuit EdT, a grand Perfume with a capital P.

Wow! there’s so much going on there, it changed hour by hour. And the drydown this morning was like coming home. I can imagine someone being loyal to VdN for a lifetime.

I got the EDT during the clearance, too. I put on a sort-of half-spritz a while before bed the other night, and I was surprised by the time it had moved into the drydown because it was unexpectedly musky–quite Jicky-like. I can’t wait to give it a full test run!

CdG Kyoto this morning, it works so well in not-hot-but-not-cold weather. I am tempted to move my summer clothes from my closet into the guest bedroom closet and put the fall/winter clothes into my closet. Just doing my part to hurry cold weather along. I am not a summer person.

Also, can anyone recommend a shoe brand making flats with decent arch support? My feet start to ache after a few hours in my current pair.

Can’t speak to arch support specifically–but if you’re going to the gym, doing errands, etc, Asics Gel running shoes have a memory foam-type layer and are super comfortable & reduce fatigue.

Check out the tri comfort orthotic shoe inserts by Dr. School. There are other support products that may help. CVS makes a ballet flat insert that helps a little. That way you can retrofit what you own.

Maybe Beautifeel? I can’t personally wear them because there’s too much padding in the toe area, but they look comfy and they make nice styles. I haven’t really been able to use arch supports in most flat flats because the sides of the shoe are too shallow. I can recommend Dansko shoes. I can stand for very long periods in those, but not sure if they make flats. Or El Naturalista brand are comfy and stylish, but pretty casual.

Very good morning, all. Hey, thanks to everyone who commented on my remarks yesterday. Your conversation was so much more interesting than my random gripe that I wish very much I had got back to it at a reasonable hour. Unfortunately, by the time I read what you had all written, it was about 10.30 p.m. here, and I hope all sendible souls in TOH were deeply and peacefully asleep.

I’m still on my mission to usher in spring, so today I’m wearing a black silk shirt I’m especially fond of (I’ll concede a light jacket as well) and 19. We still have an iffy and unsettled relationship, 19 and I, but when she behaves well, she wreathes green perfection around me and makes me smile every time I catch my own perfume. Of course, when she behaves badly, I want to throw up, but let’s hope her brattiness is behind her. Oh, and Lady Donatella do your worst: I’m about to buy 75 ml bottles of No.22 AND Misia. I know, I know, but here’s the thing: I’m old-ish now, so life is shorter and pleasure means more.

So if you love aromatic wood fragrances run to Ulta and try SJP Stash. It is an olibanum bomb! Not probably appropriate for the heat but it will be fabulous going into the colder months. I predict most consumers will not enjoy it. Not sweet, not light, not clean. Me, and probably you, will be thrilled. I bought a little bottle, Lady Donatella forgive me…..

    SOTD = FM Carnal Flowwr

This is a heavy vacation week so I am throwing caution to the wind, to some extent.

My 2 spritzes mostly pooped out around the 6 hour mark but it will make its presence known once I am back out in the heat.

I am still looking for my Mugler Les Exceptions sampler set. Persokaise reviewed a good chunk of the range within the last month or so. I can’t wait to try Supraflora as he mentioned No 19 fans should nake sure to try it.

So glad you asked 😉 …a good excuse to spray more perfume now that I’m home from work….in the name of science! (kind of)

They are all very good but like stack ranking employees at work ;)…things can always be ordered.

I will start at the bottom…I think Over the Musk is the least interesting of the five.

          Next comes Fougere Furieuse…

I quite like Chyprissime…it comes in third.

It is a toss up for 1st and 2nd w/ Oriental Express and Supra Floral. OE gets lots of love and I think it is very well done but a bit too powdery sweet for my preference. SF is a green eyed shapeshifter of sorts…it changes over time and keeps me guessing…
