Friday scent of the day 8/19

Posted by Robin on 19 August 2016 257 Comments

Marni Fall Winter 2015 2016

TGIF, happy World Humanitarian Day and happy Perfect Friday! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that is nearly perfect, and tell us how you would change it (or, layer it!) to make it completely perfect.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing Marni, the original signature version. Marni is pretty much perfect for a no-brainer fragrance, but I liked it better layered with Marni Rose, and I've discovered this summer that I like it even better than that layered over Tauer Rose Delight body oil. I never did see the Marni Spice version, did anyone here ever try it?

Reminder: on 8/26, wear a fragrance by Calvin Klein, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

From the moment my niece gifted me this fragrance in body wash format I was beyond smitten. I had to borrow her body mist in order to participate this morning.

My perfect scent in this moment is Fig and Brown Sugar.

How would I perfect it ? By taking it out of the cheap, plastic Bath and Body Works container and putting it into the elegant Dame Perfumery bottle with his signature trinity name of , perhaps, “Fig, Vanilla Orchid & Mapled Amber” and increasing the strength to EDP.

    Happy Friday, y’all!

Isn’t the shower gel wonderful? Scents up my bathroom and lingers on my skin for a while! The shower gel is also super hydrating ….. after my shower I was not able to perform my crow pose as my legs kept slipping off my upper arms….btw, this is a “retired” scent so if you love it get more….I may actually do the same 🙂 !!!!

Hee! I love the idea of decanting a budget scent into a fancy bottle. And why not? We decant wine, so the same should be for perfume.

Ever since I discovered estate sales (thanks Angela!) I realized I never have to use a plastic bottle again. I now sip my mouthwash out of a vintage stoppered yellow glass vinegar bottle that my boyfriend says makes it look like I am drinking a potion.

I am not a mouthwash user but I would take a slug of it on the regular if I could do it from that elixir vial in “Death Becomes Her”. It doesn’t even have to levitate, although it really does have to light up for the full effect. Find some purple mouthwash and you’re set. (I just Googled “purple mouthwash” and sure enough there are some to choose from.)

        Ede and Regina-
I think you guys are on to something! I may very well start decanting some of my non-niche /lower budget scents into pretty decanters/fancy atomizers! Love the idea of the mouthwash as well!

I’ve been wearing the hell out of Safran Troublant this summer, and I know its simplicity it a large part of its appeal, but I think it needs just one more element in the base to make it truly great: incense or myrrh, something with a hint of bitterness or acridity to temper the sweetness and up the complexity.

I’ve been mixing Aura Cacia frankincense oil with my regular body lotion this summer and wearing it under lots of fragrances — will have to try that with ST. And maybe I need to buy some myrrh as well.

I have a couple of Aura Cacia oils that I use for scenting things that need it but none of the really expensive ones like frankincense and myrrh. Worth it, you think? A bottle of each would set me back something like $70 CAD.

Well gosh, I did not pay so dearly for the frankincense I don’t think. I bought it at Whole Foods and I’ll have to check next time to see how much it was — could have sworn it was less than $20 US.

I always like the first sniff of Saffran Troublant but quickly find it too bland. I tried layering it with Aftelier Ancient Resins, but that didn’t quite work. I think the main problem is that it lacks that bitter counterpoint of real saffron.

    No19 Chanel EDT circa 1995.
I’m almost finished my 30ml splash of this, which is quite leathery.
Current formulation EDT vs EDP ? All opinions appreciated.
I wouldn’t change anything about what I’m wearing today.

Can’t speak to the current formulation but you smell great today, Bear!!! How many times has no 19 been reformulated? I wore it in the late 70s early 80s and briefly in the early 90s….I am sure it is different now….

I like both the current EDT and EDP but I prefer the EDP because it is more rosy than the EDT. But when I want a leathery iris, I go for the EDT.

Major fan of No 19 here, Bear! I think that the current EDP is rounder and more floral than the EDT – pretty much what you’d expect, I suppose. I tend to wear the EDT more, as I like its bite and I find it is more reminiscent of the vintage. However, I love the EDP, too.

I vote 100x for the EDP. You may have to spritz 61x for it to last all day. I suggest hooking up with Oakland Fresca to get them at Costco price (I think about $50 something and SHE opted NOT to buy a bottle for herself).

Wearing the current version of Fendi by Fendi, aka Fendi light. To make it perfect, i would of course turn it into Vintage Fendi, and I would actually own a bottle. In my fragrance history, Original Fendi was perfection.

SOTD Sycomore, which I love. I would like perhaps a touch more mellow wood to balance the vetiver in the base.

Curious to see how this one does in EDP strength. But I have about half of a 30ml decant of EDT left, plus an untouched 200ml back up, so I’m good for Sycomore.

So last week or thereabouts I mentioned I felt sh***y and my sotd smelled appropriately like sh** as well. Which was probably completely erroneous, as … the other day I kept smelling something horrendous only to discover it was my own freakin’ nose! Literally! Eeuuuwww! I finally went to the doctor and am now on antibiotics for a sinus infection.

I was planning on wearing Dilettante today, as I thought it was going to be an absolute winner for me and it isn’t. I am loaded with orange blossom fragrances, and I’d love to layer it with one of them for a little more brightness, I guess? Maybe AG’s Neroli, or Hanbury, and I dunno what else but my experiment will be delayed until I can actually smell.

PSA: STC is discontinuing Guerlain, and they are having a closeout sale at 40% off. Code is guerlain40. I know I enabled massive expenditures announcing the Chanels were being dumped, but y’all were happy to get some, right? Sadly Spiriteuse Double Vanille is not on offer, so it’s quite possible that eventually I will have to ante up for a bottle. Happy hunting!

yikes… you enabler, you! must sit on my fingers like I did when the chanels were being dumped…what is going on, btw? is Guerlain following on the heels of Chanel with regard to decants being sold?

I love Moon Bloom, but Dilettante didn’t work on me at all…got the dreaded cough syrup facet that I sometimes get from all-naturals.
AG Neroli is probably one of my fave OBs.

I didn’t get the cough syrup note (which I’m very familiar with) but I did expect Dilettante to be more uplifting and less dense. I actually like it a lot, but it’s almost but not quite right.

      1) Sinus infections can smell UTTERLY FOUL, and turn your mouth odor into complete YUCK.

      2) I have lately discovered that yes, I love orange blossom and citrus scents, and I would really loveto hear about your experiment.

      3) Also, Zulilly is doing a sale of mega sized department store fragrances. I saw a 6.75 ounce bottle of Prada Infusion d’Iris for $84, for example.

I’ll post about my Dilettante experiment once I’m sure I can be (relatively) accurate. Have you tried it yet? Any particular orange blossom/citrus scents you love?

Thank you! Ah yes – the steamy shower, the steam inhalations, the neti pot, the consumption of garlic, ginger, cayenne, wasabi, gargling with thyme and oregano tinctures, basting with eucalyptus and peppermint, acupressure … all to no avail. I’ll continue regardless, but I’m glad I caved and am on antibiotics.

I’m behind on the Guerlains as well, and I reaaaaalllyyy don’t need more decants, either. So, I only bought four. 🙂

I use a couple of drops of tea tree oil with the neti pot. I have chronic sinus problems, congestion etc but usually not full blown infections. The tea tree helps eliminate the funky smell/taste(though it hasn’t helped the congestion 🙁

I don’t think I have a perfect scent, although Ormonde Woman is close. But it’s a bit too warm to wear that today and I’m saving the last sample dose of that for a better day. Didn’t get much sleep last night and feeling generally bleh, but at least it’s Friday!

I’m in Chloe – sticking to the minis/samples I’ve committed to using up. A good friend of mine gave me her mini of this that came in a packaged set with her full bottle. It’s her signature scent and while I like it well enough, it’s not FB worthy to me.

I am wearing Heure Exquise and did a small experiment: on one arm layered it with Profumo’s Mysore sandalwood (I have 2 ml), and on the other with Rose Delight body oil, to bring out the sandalwood or rose. And on another part of my arm I just spritzed it as it is, current EdP version.
Verdict: it is perfect, rose or sandalwood don’t add anything. I only wish I had the dry body oil. It is still my HG.

I had a tiny sample of that HE dry body oil, and it was so very good. Of course, being a galbanum fiend, I found myself liking the dry body oil *despite* its not having much if any galbanum, almost like it was another fragrance entirely.

After almost ordering Marni online, but talking myself out of it — it disappeared really quickly in Canada and couldn’t find it during my Las Vegas or NOLA trips — I recently found Marni Spice at a discount beauty place in Buffalo, not particularly discounted. I think I liked it better than original Marni – more cardamom but still the cool rose effect. Should have bought it, but didn’t.

I’m in vintage Le Dix EDT, which would be perfect if it were still made. Ah well. It’s particularly powdery this morning – not at all a bad thing since it’s supposed to be over 100 degrees here today, and the powder note gives me the illusion I’m staying cool and dry.

After reading Erin’s description of Marni Spice, I think I may have to try it. Cardamom and rose – yum.

ELdO Jasmin et Cigarette which would be perfect if they amped up the jasmine. As it is, it feels watered down so I layer it with either Lush Lust, Diptyque EI Jasmin(which IS my perfect jasmine and used that today), or some cheapie jasmine fragrance oil which is a fresher, greener jasmine. I feel like they should pay me for improving their formula 😉

I liked Marni and liked Marni Spice even more. I just got a sample of Rose Delight and I can’t wait to try layering.

Thrilled to be back home from a conference in Orlando that was really, really trying. There was a little too much partying in the evenings, and I saw the really unpleasant side of some people’s personalities (publicly humiliating others, making fun of womens’ looks because they weren’t “feminine” enough). In light of it, being at work is a bit uncomfortable, so I’m bypassing “almost perfect” and going straight for scents I’m excited about.

Wearing Hilde Soliani Untitled No. 7 and it’s absolutely dreamy. I picked up two scent-filled packages from the mailbox this morning, and it just about brought tears to my eyes, it was so kind and wonderful. Thanks for brightening my day! Happy Friday!

Oh, how utterly disappointing to see those ugly sides of people we work with, especially when it comes to ingrained sexism/racism. Keep in mind that being kind and polite in your interactions will make the awkwardness better to bear.

Looking at the notes for Hilde Soliani Untitled No. 7, I am intrigued and this seems to be calling my name.

You always smell lovely. So, I’ll add the Hilde Soliani to my list.
Recover fast from the conference. Agree totally with Ede97005. I’ve found that some people don’t seem that impressive at work, but more reasonable socially. Then others are reliable worker bees and tend to judge everyone else publicly after they’ve kicked back a glass of wine.
So, a little insight from a conference helps understand the work dynamic better. Then it’s time for it all to end!

I’m wearing Versense today. I keep thinking that I love it until I wear it, based mainly on the way it smells when I first put it on. The first blast is great. Then the fig kicks in, and the sour, musty smell takes it from love to like. If they got rid of the fig it would be great. Hey Robin, have you ever done a Friday project on the one note that you hate in everything except one specific perfume?

Feminite du Bois: I love this fragrance and it is pretty much perfect for me, I just want there to be more of that smell! I want it to be intense! I’m sure the original version (I have the current SL one) was stronger, but I’m afraid to try it – other than being a bit too faint, I truly enjoy the reformulation and I’m afraid of ruining our relationship.

Wearing Tom Ford Black Orchid today. I wish it had a bit more meaty truffle or something savory to cut the fruity sweetness a touch. Or perhaps some salty licorice. Still, Tom was right when he called it a modern classic, though when he said that at launch, I think we all rolled our eyes.

      Ah, Tom Ford!

I think that people did roll their eyes because the dude is so self possessed, and so stunningly handsome that it was taken as arrogance. When in fact it was incredible self confidence stemming from his good connections, hard work and home stability (having a partner for almost 30 years, the very same person you fell in love with at first sight, can really fortify a person.)

And yes- I do agree it’s a modern classic, much in the way that CK Obsession is.

    1) It’s gonna be 101F today. After work I am hanging out at the pool.

    2) I was gonna wear something light and spicy in honor of Dune (like Black Jade) but it’s just too darn warm.

    3) SOTD: Sycamore, which is pretty darn perfect, but is even more perfect with a bit of jasmine. So I layered Molinard’s Jasmine with Sycamore, and now am wearing a very sexy (to me) and perfect tropical scent.

    2. Make it last LONGER THAN 10 SECONDS!

What can I say? Haters gonna hate…

In other perfume news, I got 5ml minis of both Joop! “What about Adam” and Roméo Gigli “per uomo” from eBay. Of course they could be spoiled or fakes, but it will be fun to see what I think of these now I actually know a little bit more about perfumes than I did back in the nineties when I wore them. :^)

Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur Extrait. It’s the perfection of Mohur, which I sprayed on the other wrist just for verification!
It would be absolutely perfect if it were not so expensive. Perhaps cost per wearing in comparison to other fragrances may not be very different.

I have no idea why STC is not going to be carrying the Guerlain line anymore except that whoever owns Guerlain must have sent out a C&D letter like Chanel did. I loaded up on Liu, vintage Misouko and Apres L’Ondee. Yeah, it’s already bad enough this perfume quarter with my ordering of a full bottle of Beloved and I actually found a 9 ounce bottle on E-Bay of vintage Bal in PdT form. It’s going to be tough to justify ISM for a birthday present next month. I might have to push that back to Christmas. So my Amex card isn’t too happy with me.

I’m sitting in the dry down on Lyric right now and after my shower, I will continue on with it.

Get this, there are 4 1/2 ounce bottles of the PdT on E-Bay and they go for around $600. But I found this 9 ounce bottle for $100. The color looks like it should for vintage Bal of Versailles and I snapped it up. I know a bargain when I see one for vintage Bal.

Not surprised if Hermes did discontinue the Jour Gardenia. For me, the Jour d’Absolu, after its radiant floral top and middle, became complete gardenia, gardenia, gardenia all the way, with no other notes in the drydown which lasted forever on me.

SOTD will be Light Blue. I resisted this purchase for years because it was “too mainstream,” “too popular,” “too recognizable.” Well this summer I caved and it really is the almost perfect summer scent. It’s almost perfect due to longevity, I wish I would get a little more mileage out of the initial application. I have considered layering it with their lotion to see if it would last longer…

Ha! I wore Acqua Viva last Saturday and Sunday but was perplexed that it did not last too long on me — unlike when I tried it at Fumerie — I was walking around smelling of tart tart lemon for quite a long time. Maybe more sprays but this makes me sneeze, a lot, in the first few minutes.

I decided to wear Le Labo Vanille 44 on one wrist, Eau Duelle edt on the other and then realized I have a sample of Guerlain Tonka Imperiale which is sprayed on top of my hand. They are all delicious and perfect in air conditioning.
But what I’m excited about, Robin, was your Marni/Tauer Rose oil idea. I had been so interested in trying Marni and bid a few times on eBay, finally getting a wonderful deal. Once I sniffed it, it was nice but I wasn’t in love. Now I have a new project. “Everything’s better with Blue Bonnet [or Tauer Rose body oil] on it!”

SOTD is AG Songes edp, a surprising deep love of mine, since I (intensely) dislike most white florals. Songes is a favorite of mine for warm summer nights at an outdoor concert (our last Friday-night-concert-in-the-park is tonight, so rhis IS perfect!) and it’s also a favorite of mine on a very cold but sunny January day.

I don’t know why, but whenever I wear Songes I always dress completely in white -summer or winter – and its only ‘imperfection’ is that the liquid has changed to a deep red (which I’ve read somewhere happens as the fragrance ages), so I have to be careful when I spray. Not too much of a problem, since I spray skin only before I dress, never clothes, but I just have to be careful with any touch-ups.

Sotd is Safran troublant from L’Artisan. I think it’s heavenly. Almost the best scent ever, but. I want to ad a smidgeon of chewy marzipan. A depth of toasted almond to ground it a teensy bit.

Also. I really like Deep red from Hugo Boss. But every time I wear it, I wish it was made with high quality ingredients. It would really make the composition rise to a higher level. It deserves better.

One of my greatest disappointments is Guerlain Vetiver pour Elle. A floral vetiver is a fantastic idea, and I think I would love this if it did not have way too much modern musk.

Chanel 28 la Pausa is an iris vetiver that has the right balance, but I want a non-iris floral vetiver, too! Everyone complains about its longevity, but I spray it on the nape of my neck, where it lasts longer on my hair, or on clothing, which also extends its duration. Or I wear it when I want to start the day with a boost but want to be discreet later.

Also, those horrible spiky woods that perfumers try to use instead of real sandalwood, etc., are completely ruined for me. AG Matin d’Orage is an example where the spiky scent grows stronger every time I wear it. Too bad!

Like a few others, I don’t feel quite to put my finger on anything precisely with many perfumes that don’t quite grab me, but there are lots I would love to last longer, and that were cheaper.

Congratulations! Your employer must be thrilled to have you and your skills and dedication.
Saks must be thrilled that you spend part of the brilliantly earned paycheck in their perfume department 🙂 !

LOL…and thanks. I like BG’s gift card event better because BG takes the value of the gift card out of the total when you make a qualifying purchase whereas Saks gives you a gift card to spend later so effectively, while a $100 gift card on a $500 purchase looks like 20% off, in reality, assuming no tax, you have to spend $600 to get the $100 which is 17%; with NYC tax, that discount drops down to just a hair above 15%.
