Starck Paris Peau de Soie, Peau d’Ailleurs & Peau de Pierre ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 17 August 2016 27 Comments

starck-s

French designer Philippe Starck will introduce his debut fragrances, Peau de Soie, Peau d'Ailleurs and Peau de Pierre, under the Starck Paris brand next week. The fragrance license is held by Perfumes y Diseño Group.

I don’t want to be pretentious. But it’s a product for intelligent people.

[...] It’s absolutely not marketing. We don’t do it to please the market. We make what we want, but we do it with honesty. We are the opposite of marketing — perhaps we will see the opposite result.

Peau de Soie ~ feminine; developed by perfumer Dominique Ropion. "Peau de Soie is lighter than air, distilled to evoke the timeless qualities of feminine intuition and modern elegance."

Peau d'Ailleurs ~ unisex; developed by perfumer Annick Ménardo. "In the space between lies Peau d'Ailleurs. Without reference, an eternal spirit whose impression of less, leaves more."

Peau de Pierre ~ masculine; developed by perfumer Daphné Bugey. "Peau de Pierre evokes nostalgia for a man we do not know, caring and intelligent, with an earthiness as strong as stone."

I will update with notes if I can; but reportedly they are not being advertised.

Starck Paris Peau de Soie, Peau d'Ailleurs and Peau de Pierre will be available at Neiman Marcus, $100 for 40 ml Eau de Toilette or $150 for 90 ml Eau de Toilette.

I have bad news for them… today’s “intelligent people” don’t have such dated ideas about gender.

I don’t think they are being prescriptive at all about who wears which, or that only men can wear the masculine, etc etc. If that helps, but maybe it doesn’t.

Well… Some of you… Some of us still prescribe to those ideas… even if only basically. It’s not unintelligent to view Gender as different but equals…? is it not?

First thought – Dear God what’s Philippe Starck doing getting on the perfume bandwagon
Second thought – oh but I like those bottles, especially lined up like that
Third thought – Dominque Ropion? Annick Menardo? Daphne Bugey? To quote Leo – …you had my curiousity now you have my attention.

I think those bottles are fantastic…best of the year, so far. And they look lovely lined up, but also would look great on their own. HOPE the 40 ml are the same design.

The three bottle 40ml coffret shows pictures of the same bottles. It is on the NMwebsite:

Love the bottles with “sculptures” inside… They need to publish a list of notes. 🙂

According to WWD, the press materials are 19 pages long, no notes mentioned.

YAY, I finally figured out what my password was!

I haven’t heard the name Philippe Starck since the late 90’s. So curious about these. As for the marketing towards certain genders, it probably has more to do with Neiman’s, no?

No, he talks quite a bit about gender in the interview today in WWD. Here are a few more tidbits:

“Peau de Soie is billed as a women’s scent whose femininity “wraps around a man’s heart” and the second eau de toilette he created, the men’s Peau De Pierre, is a masculine fragrance that has a “woman” on the inside.”

      and

“Starck takes a dim view of men. In fact, he said he believes the only thing that can save men is if they “recognize their femininity inside.””

      and

“He admitted that in his 67 years, he’s never liked or respected men, and called them “stupid” and “useless.” As a heterosexual man himself, he has a “beautiful wife” and five children. Starck professed that the only other male friends he has are “very feminine.””

I agree with Jessica: he sounds like a total ass.

Love the bottles. The descriptions are kind of that stream of consciousness thing that is hip, but not helpful. However, I would definitely try them if I found them.

Some of us – minority or not – DO subscribe to ideas of what is “masculine” and “feminine” in fragrance. Anyway, who’s supposed to get excited for any fragrance for which notes are not specified????

I have a feeling what Regina meant was more in response to females -> intuition, men -> intelligent, but I answered her before my 2nd cup of tea 🙂

I was able to smell these last night. They are all nice enough, but the most interesting one to me is Peau d’Ailleurs. It is an odd mineral smell, slightly reminiscent of a Comme des Garcons scent.

Didn’t he once design a bottle for L’air des Temps… a stylised dove with a silver beak cap? Love the look of these bottles.
