Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-August 2016

Posted by Robin on 13 August 2016 215 Comments

George Washington Bridge

Our standard issue open thread poll: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the perfume you decided not to try after reading a description in the scent of the day poll, whatever.

I will be spending Saturday driving home from my last summer vacation, so likely I won't be able to chime in until Sunday.

Perhaps not such a good choice for a horrible muggy hot Michigan day, but I just wanted incense, so I am wearing Copal Azur. My little travel bottle is almost empty – trying to decide if I want to spring for the interesting big bottle.
In other news, the Olympics seems to be going better than expected, at least what they are showing us on TV, but US politics continues to devolve. I prefer thinking about perfume choices! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Copal Azur is one of the few incense fragrances that I can wear in the heat and humidity, but as I’m still miffed that it doesn’t smell like copal I’m not going to buy a bottle.
As I typed that I realized how childish I’m being about it 🙂 So there! *insert pouty face here*

I had the same pouty face over this one, although I think it smells lovely. Have you come across any true copal fragrances?

I believe I read somewhere that the actual copal resin is insoluble in anything that can be used as a fragrance carrier or something..there is some reason that actual copal is never in fragrance. Sort of like there is no real LOTV used in perfume because every part of the plant is poisonous to humans. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

            13 August 2016 at 11:10 pm

No, I think you’re right about Copal needing to be a created accord. I’m just surprised that nobody has done so yet.

Many thanks for all the wonderful Birthday wishes!
The party was fantastic- much laughter, singing and dancing.
Mr. Beam was present, but did not dominate the celebration.
Huh! That older, wiser thaang really is true. Who’da thunk it?
    😉
Scent of today is 10 Corso Como.
Tomorrow (my actual Birthday) will be Musc Ravageur.
Happy Birthday to fellow Leos, monkeytoe and Filomena ! Many more!

Safe drive, Robin! SOTD: Byredo Pulp. Everyone who loves this should know that the perfumer, Jerome Epinette, also does the scents for the R+Co hair products. Quite a few of them smell exactly like Pulp, which is to say DIVINE.

A date update, for everyone who was so helpful on Thursday! I was leaning towards L de Lolita Lempicka, but went with Baccarat Rouge 540 at the last minute for the sparkling, candied effect. The actual barbecuing itself was less than successful, but the date lasted for three hours, and he texted me the next day! I’m pretty sure I have my good luck charm, NST, to thank! 😉

Good to know about Jerome Epinette. I’ll have to look those hair products up. I’m a big fan of at least three of his fragrances: Byredo Rose Noir, Atelier Jasmine Angelique and Mistral Patchouli.

Our last day in Málaga (goodness that fortnight went by quickly). Last night we took a boat out into the harbour to see the fireworks greeting the start of Málaga’s Fería; today the city is teeming with people starting a week of partying, with stalls selling food, drink and brightly coloured tat everywhere. There are women in flamenco dresses and musicians everywhere.

SOTE last night was Maria Candida Gentile “Finisterre”, which is a great salty sea perfume, probably the equal of my beloved Acqua di Sale and of course both cheaper and available in small bottles.

SOTD today is The Different Company “Sel Vetiver”, a pleasant light vetiver scent. Since I already have Guerlain and Hermessence vetiver, and am not a complete vetiver-head, I won’t be taking this one any further. Lasting power on a hot sunny day is not good.

I’ll arrive home after midnight tonight and am off to Paris on Monday to resume on-site hostilities with my lovely client. :^

Both that I wear are pretty sheer, so maybe not to your taste: Rose d’Ecume and the new D S and Durga Atlantic Rose. Le Galion Rose isn’t quite salty, but there is a light seasideness about it too. Curious is there are others out there.

I got the go-ahead from my surgeon to wash my hair yesterday. To celebrate this accomplishment, I sprayed myself with a little Vepres Sicilliennes. It’s the little things.

Unfortunately, she also has decided to leave my drains in until at least next Wednesday. I find them uncomfortable and repulsive, so I will be sequestered in my house a while longer. Good thing I brought some work home this summer to keep me busy! 😉

Please report back any exciting summer adventures, or even mildly amusing diversions, so I can live vicariously through you!

PS. I have been catching up on The Walking Dead during my convelescence. I feel like there’s some irony to binge-watching a zombie show while stumbling around the house in a hospital gown.

Being able to wash your hair must help enormously. I’m not familiar with Vepres Sicilliennes, but will investigate it and it’s good that it’s helping your spirits.

You could be binge watching “Scrubs”, which might make you laugh so hard your drains would pop out, or wonder about your surgeon 😉 . Best to you for a speedy recovery. The mind body connection is so important and you have that wrapped up!

Thanks, Wendysue! I have never seen an episode of Scrubs, either! When I tire of the zombie appocalypse, I will look into it! (I’m easily 15 years behind on TV shows, though, so I’m hardly spoiling for choice!)

Funny you should mention mind-body. I was having deep thoughts on this last night. I was thinking about how we separate out the mind/self and the physical self, and how having surgery can serve as a reminder that this duality is an illusion. When my body is altered, it changes me. It changes *me*, not just my body–how I think about myself, how I move through the world (literally and figuratively). If my self was separate from my body, this would not be so; it would just be a change in flesh.

Ah forgive me. My father was a philosophy pHd candidate before he left university to become a full-time hippy. Some of it clearly has rubbed off on me! 🙂

Thank you, Sapphire. That is the goal! The recovery is predicted to be of the slow-and-steady variety, but I will be allowed to drive again in a week to ten days. So, then a week or so of “vacation” left, and then a week of meetings and such, and then KIDS! Should be enough time to at least be functional.

Good news on the progress! Although it is too late now because you can wash your hair, but if you ever don’t have time to wash your hair but feel like you need to, LUSH has a lemon-scented dry shampoo, a powder you sprinkle on you scalp and comb through. It could get a little messy so if you can go outside to apply and comb through, you will save yourself some cleaning up!

Happy weekend, everyone! The weather here lately has been challenging from a perfume perspective — the mornings are bundle-up-in-sweaters chilly, and by noon it’s time to turn on the air conditioner. So while I know that in a few hours I’ll be wanting big splashes of citrus cologne and the like, at the moment something warm and cuddly and ambery-woody sounds just about right. What to do? Today’s compromise is L’Eau d’Hiver, and it’s feeling like a pretty great choice really.

So far I’m in just a spray or two of Florida Water. In the truck and heading deeper into the East Texas humidity so am undecided about what to wear when we arrive. We’re heading to my SIL’s new condo for my father-in-law’s “birthday celebration,” which is a thinly veiled excuse to get us to finish decorating before she has renters in next weekend. Since her husband thinks the world should be completely unscented and sterile (and thinks iceberg lettuce with ranch dressing is a salad), I can’t really wear anything too overpowering. Maybe I’ll join Ari in wearing Pulp. I’m making a peach and blueberry crumble when I get there so I can just pretend to have gotten juice all over myself.

You should wear something so exquisitely smelly that the husband fella has a fit of the vapours so you are forbidden the decorating party and banished to the verandah to drink daquiris all day.

That is an excellent idea, except for the 100% humidity and swarms of killer mosquitos. I’ve already volunteered to make the inevitable grocery run and then I’m planning on drinking my fill of good wine that I don’t have to pay for and finding a project in another room. Perhaps a closet needs organizing. I did bring my decant of Salome if I get desperate for solitude 😀

Also sampled two scents from Isabey, one is Fluer Nocturne and the other Lys Noir.
      Interesting..
Lys Noir was a very close skin scent to me. And FN lasted all through the night and into this morning after I showered.

Anyone tried anything from this line?

I tried Lys Noir, but if I remember correctly, I think it was the tuberose that turned me off. I ended up buying Fleur Nocturne which also has tuberose, but just a touch. Yes FN does last a long time on my skin as well.

I would consider the bottle just for the elephants..I wore it to the Farmers Market yesterday and liked it very much to balance the heat.

Was just pawing around in the cabinet to see what I should spritz. Not sure what happened but I can’t find my sample of the Nirvana Bourbon nor my sample of Encens Jinhae. Oh well.

Picked up a bottle of the Chandler Burr Untitled Series item I bought well over a year ago. Sprayed it on. Pleasant. A bit salty? Had to go online and look it up. CK Reveal.

New excuse to stay inside or close by during this awful weather… Jammed my baby toe on the chair leg yesterday afternoon. Nicely swollen and bruised. Had to wear flip flops to the movies last night (since we’d already bought tickets). Getting clumsy in my old age…. Either that, or the smaller size of this apartment is making me akin to that bull in a china shop….

I don’t know about you, but I’ve probably stubbed at least one toe a year (maybe 2-3?) for all the years I’ve been alive, and I’m well into my fifth decade now. So. Not old age. 😉

Ouch! A stubbed toe is one of the most sickening feelings. It’s what I usually wish on people when I really loose my temper (painful, aggravating, causes momentary nausea, and impermanent so as not to cause horrible karmic backlash). Hope you feel better soon.

I’m sampling Ylang 49 this morning and wondering what took me so long to try this – it’s gorgeous! I’ve had the sample (along with a few others from Le Labo) for a year or more, and all those little sample sprays were halfway down this morning except for Ylang. It was just sitting there, feeling forlorn and unloved … and now it’s laughing smugly and saying “I told you so”. Angela’s review here is spot-on (in case anyone is wondering).

A question for you guys- looking for non-scented body sunscreen. Tried a bunch but I always feel like I can smell it and it interferes with my enjoyment of fragrances (maybe it is all in my head!!!) – but would love to hear recommendations.

Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunscreen (the one with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) has a low odor profile. Your mileage may vary, but I find that sunscreen with a physical barrier like zinc oxide has less of a smell than sunscreen with a chemical barrier like octinoxate.

The Neutrogena sunscreen doesn’t seem to leave a scent on my skin. I don’t like the smell of sunscreen to stick to my hands; it interferes when sniffing my wrists. 🙂

I agree. I use the Kiss My Face Oat Protien SPF 30 when I want an unscented sunscreen. The chemical ones all smell like chemicals unless you get the magical ones from Japan or Korea which come in tiiiiny bottles and usually contain a fair amount of alcohol.

I get the ones for baby too although the last one I used, Pure and Free, caused a rash so I ended up using what I know I’m not allergic to but is heart-stoppingly expensive – La Mer for the face sunscreen SPF 30 for my neck area and back of ears and SPF 50 for the rest of me. I just got samples of the La Mer body sunscreen and will give that a test drive.

SOTD is VCA Orchidee Vanille, borders on too sweet, but has just enough woodiness to keep that from happening. Discovered a small decant of SSS Egyptian Musk that I had forgotten I had and have been really loving it. Unfortunately, it is discontinued. I emailed Laurie Erickson and she was gracious enough to recommend Ava Luxe’s Egyptian Musk. Was wondering if anyone had any comparison or what other Ava Luxe fragrances are really good.

Morning, everyone. I had a gorgeously scented Saturday because Kanuka generously shared samples with me on Friday and I ended up trying all of them, at once, and more than once. Talk about greedy needy behaviour? I was the epitome of that yesterday. Didn’t even do any work, just read books (that is, I wallowed in some novels; I didn’t read serious stuff), played with perfume, decided to tidy our wardrobes but didn’t do it, and felt a bit sorry for myself. Today was meant to be all about focus, dedication and restraint, like resuming a proper diet after binge eating rice crackers and almond butter (yes, I did that yesterday too). So, to this end, my SOTD should be a couple of spritzes of the cool, cerebral, detached Cristalle. But you know what? bother restraint for a game of grown up ghastliness: what I really want is the unsubtle, inexpensive but very acceptable Fancy Nights, in which I am now awash. Oh, and the almond butter should be very, very afraid: I am about to approach it with a spoon, and I’m not going to worry about the intermediary of rice crackers….

I think there are many perfumes that I decide not to try based on poll comments, but I can’t remember anything specific. There are too many new perfumes that don’t sound memorable.

I’m wearing Cognoscenti Tomato Leather again to see if it lasts longer in this humid weather than it did when I first tried it. I think maybe it is but I’m not sure I like it as much. It smells more like a CdG today, with “petroleum” type notes.

The fruit leathers seem sweeter to me. Think tomato leaf, too. I wish it came in smaller bottles.

Started the day in Assam of India and ended it in so much stuff that I sampled on Bleeker Street in NYC…..finally got to smell Sables….I love it! And the new Jo Malone (Basil and something or other…pleasant but I won’t be getting seeking out a full bottle)….

Thank you for reminding me of the exact name…that’s the one! I liked it enough but couldn’t sniff the drydown as I accidentally sprayed Sables in the same spot only a few minutes later….the Sables was a LOVE…I was sniffing my wrist all the way home on the very long train ride…and the one spray lasted well into the night….the Basil & Neroli I would probably wear if I full bottle fell into my lap 🙂

Oh and the reformulated Eau du Ciel does not smell anything like I remembered of the original (still have an empty bottle from 1994 and will occasionally attempt to inhale the vapors)

Just went out for the first time today and felt like I walked into a wall of bricks. Unbelievable how hot it is out there. I did a very slow walk around the block just to get a change of environment.
When is it going to cool down!?!
Lovely FB friends had to share the article out there on how cockroaches actually will fly in such heat. What a sick thought.

My husband has quarantined me to the living room while he gets the bedroom because I “overdid it with the nasty perfume” today.
He’s referring to Sous le toit de Paris believe it or not. Sigh.

    Stay cool friends!

Hey, at least you have AC blasting on you in the car. Run from one AC place to another and you’ll be just fine.

There was a live blues concert on the town square last night, and very few people attended, such a shame. But I suspect most folks, like me, are just worn out by the heat, still 91 F at 6:30.

My person banished himself to the sofa the other night announcing the next morning that I was wearing the worst smelling perfume he’d ever smelt. It was a tiny tiny dab of Rozy Viole d’Extrait! Guess that won’t go on the FB wish list.

Ha! We have flying cockroaches in the swamp year round and they are the size of a small plane. They fancy it up by calling them Palmetto Bugs, but they’re nothing but roaches on steroids. Absolutely disgusting!!

SOTD: YSL’s Mon Paris. Tried the tester at Belk today, and it’s going strong hours later. I’m enjoying it!

Smelly News: Yankee Candle has ALL candles 50% off this weekend. Coupon is online and on their FB page. If you like fragrance for your home, now’s a good time to try some new fall scents….. 🙂

I started the day in Wood Sage and Sea Salt. I had to go to the mall to buy new shoes for school (yes, teachers go back to school shopping too!) so I tried Gold by Commodity at Sephora. Despite liberal spraying, it had vanished completely within 20 minutes. I’m now wearing Rose Ikebana. Stay cool and safe, everyone!

Enjoying a well earned sprinkling of vintage Tweed perfumed talc after a long day of post-move organizing (yes, still). Every now and then I get a glimmer of recognition that a room, or corner, might actually be someplace I’d choose to live.

In my bedroom I collected up the vintage perfume ads bought over the last couple of years, preparing to buy frames and hang them. Wondering if I can draw an unconscious connection between knotty pine paneling and vintage perfumes. Hmm….

I just adore vintage perfume ads! They’re so gorgeous. I love that you’ll be framing and hanging them.
I do want to add at least one to my bathroom.

I also saw today in the street fair vintage menus from New Orleans, Chicago and Paris — loved this idea too! They make lovely gifts too.

Wore the light and lovely Rose Atlantic while driving to the Cape today, then after a shower am testing Le Galion Rose. I really like it for this weather especially.

I got the 5ml minis online through the Paris site, but does any one know where they sell Le Galion in the USA? I am having a hard time finding it.

Like many, I’m not enjoying this heat. Brutal!!! Seems a degree cooler today, and on my way to a movie. I’m doused in Eau Sauvage and PdN Eau d’Ete, which is a nice, refreshing combo. They’re the only ones I can bear in this heat.

Popped in Lush today and was excited to see they’ve got some new scents they’ve brought over from across the pond — Kerbside Violet.. and one I really liked called All Good Things which is a smoky vanilla with some other mysterious note I can’t put my finger on.
The hubby tried them too but quickly requested I stick to the rose jam for this brand.
