Very late lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, early August 2016

Posted by Robin on 6 August 2016 172 Comments

peaches-s2

Our usual open thread poll, starting rather late due to WiFi issues: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the perfume you think you might need to buy for Fall 2016, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Hey Robin–hope you are enjoying your vacation. Mine is planned, but not until November! So I won’t start the planning just yet.

SOTD–leftover MFK Aqua Universalis Forte from yesterday’s community project. This bottle was gifted to me, I might not have bought it myself, but I find that I am wearing it lots this summer. Easy, but lasting and fresh. After a shower, I think a pick an Andy Tauer rose for dinner with friends….which one?

Fantastic so far, thank you! Perfect weather, and will have perfect wifi for the rest of the week.

And I will be wearing lots of Tauer Rose Delight this week. If you own Phi, that gets my vote unless it’s too hot.

An extra lazy weekend is a great thing, especially in August.

SotD = Le Jardin de Monsieur Li, and now I’m craving kumquats. Instead I’ll eat a peach, and be happy. 😀

You smell great, and I do love kumquats but I might love peaches even more.

Love the way you smell. Never had a kumquat in my life. And I prefer nectarine over peach 😉

Thank you, lucasai! A kumquat has a special taste, and M. Ellena has captured its scent quite perfectly. If you smell M. Li, you have, in a sense, tried a kumquat. 😀

Today, I’m in Fils de Dieu, I think because some other people mentioned wearing it this week and I went “hmmm . . . ” every time I saw that. Anyway, it’s great, as usual.

Planning on making a sherry pound cake later today.

We were gifted a bottle of poorly-looked-after sherry when some friends moved, and this recipe used up a cup of it. It’s the Alice Medrich sherry and olive oil pound cake. I think I’m going to try and find the Silver Palate chocolate sauce recipe – they’d go well together, I bet. But, I’m letting the cake rest a bit.

I hope you have a great time Robin.
I tried Lonesome Rider today for the first time, and Lonestar Memories again. Both great.

SOTD is Ubar, a whole lot of it. I’m not working today so I feel free to inundate the world with my scent.

You know, I don’t know. The opening of Rider is less fierce, but it disappears much more quickly on skin than Memories.

I did not manage to find any good bags, no…there are very good stores here but did not work out today. And now we’re in our rental house so it doesn’t matter — have tons of good tea with me. Will still look for those bags for next time I travel.

Hey everyone. 🙂 I made it through one month of Angela’s all-summer-long challenge– wearing Via Lanvin every day until I perished of boredom and had to be resuscitated with SL Fille En Aiguilles. (Which, if you’ve never tried it in summertime before, is amazing in the August heat.) I still love Via but must cop to the fact that I am made for polyfidelity and must never defy nature again.

Glad you’re having a good vacation, Robin! 🙂

This Pradaholic is finally trying L’Homme Prada today and is very pleased about how it smells.

Some DNA of beloved Prada Amber Pour Homme is detected but still it doesn’t smell like copy or rework but like a different creation.

Very wearable. Bottle will be a must as it also looks stunning.

Morning, NST. I’m all sleepy and snuggled in: it’s the coldest weekend of the winter so far. Dakkie and a mouse (not sure which) are on my feet; Isabella has top position under the duvet; the dear one is, ummm, breathing, very softly and regularly. He sounds like an old-fashioned coffee percolator. I wish we could stay like this all day!

I’m wearing Maharanih from a sample sent me by lovely Gaynor, and by next week a small bottle will be mine, all mine, thanks to an obliging team member attending a conference in L.A. and her willingness to go to Scent Bar for me. Yay! Maharanih isn’t exactly an early morning scent — I wonder what one of those would be?–but who cares? I love its gentle sultriness. The dear one has just opened one eye and said he loves it too…

Wore the last of my full bottle of Spanish Amber and was very naughty by purchasing the discontinued Mexican Cocoa for fifteen dollars at my local health food store ( I vowed no new purchases until I got down to ten bottles)….will now drench myself in Assam of India…

Thanks to the generosity of one NSTer (Holly 🙂 !!!) I am sending my niece off to college with some wonderful samples for her to share with her college friends…my goal is to create a new generation of perfumistas and get her and her friends off of Bath and Body Works (not that there is anything wrong with Bath and Body Works..they make some great stuff that is highly affordable when you are on a tight budget as every college student is but I just want them to be able to expand their horizons and smell some of the “hippie dippie” perfume , which is what my niece calls some of the stuff in my collection!!!!)

I know what you mean about educating a new generation of perfumistas. In my family, I’m working two generations down, on my great niece, who has a nose and Opinions. She once announced at Smith and Caughey’s perfume counter that something or other smelt “derivative”. She was thirteen at the time. We had a quiet word afterwards about best manners, but actually, I was very pleased she was discerning and engaged. Now she plays happily in my collection when she gets the chance and I take little samples of this’n’that to family parties for her. Thank goodness there’s another girly girl in the family!

Happy Saturday everyone and happy holiday to you, Robin!

The Monsillage sampler came yesterday and have worn Eau de Celeri twice already. I absolutely love it, especially for this time of year. It reminds me a bit of a mash up between two of my absolute favorites: Eau des Merveilles (not the orange but the saltiness) and the green of Chanel 19.
Also sprayed it on my darling last night and it smelled great on him too. At this rate 5 ml will not go very far!

I’m a Celeri fan, too. I actually tested it side by side with No. 19 because it brought that to mind so strongly. The weird thing was that I could only smell the last century notes in No. 19 when I did that. Not sure if there is really any similarity or if it’s more like a metaphor.

Or if they are so similar, that the similar notes blend together in the air and I only smell the dissimilar notes when I put my nose close to my wrist. Weird!!!

My husband is working on a series of still lifes of fruit in bowls – just gorgeous, even though I am a bit bias – and that peach reminds me of some of the peaches he’s painted.
I’ve had to either hid my fruit purchases or eat ’em quickly as of late.

Fruity and earthy for sure, and there is a metallic zing, and musk …after that there are other things I’m not sure of… Fragrantica has things like “fur” listed but I’m not skilled enough to recognize and name them.

SOTD is Shalimar (thanks, Ulta tester bottle!). I’m surprised that it’s not at all overpowering in today’s weather, which is both hot and humid. Man, am I warm! …Maybe I shouldn’t have compounded being out in the heat with eating buffalo wings for lunch, eh?

The perfume I need to buy for Fall? That’s easy: La Fille de Berlin! If I actually manage to or not is a separate matter…

Good morning everyone, I’m at the airport waiting to catch my flight on a visit to my mother for a few days. It’s freezing both outside and in the terminal. There has been a lot of renovating since I was last here, looks very nice, but they must have forgotten to install the heating – brrr!

I’m wearing a spot of Rose de Nuit, I wanted something substantial for a cold day. If the weather is clear, I should have an amazing view of snow on the hills all down the South Island. Just to be clear for those in the Northern Hemisphere, heading south here means going further into the cold 🙂

Wearing Iris Nazarena today, which I am enjoying.

I had a question about sandalwood perfumes. I love the sandalwood in some of Neela Vermeire’s perfumes and am wondering if there is a sandalwood centered perfume that is as good. Suggestions?

I hate to say because all my favorites, I purchased before Indian Sandalwood essentially disappeared. So waiting to hear what others have to say on the subject!

I was very pleasantly surprised by the new sandalwood perfume by Perris Monte Carlo, Santal du Pacifique. I find it less dusty than the Neela Vermeire sandalwood note (which I love too). No vanilla listed, but to me the drydown is almost that sort of creamy.
(Went in to test, came out with a bottle.)

I have good luck with smaller perfumers when it comes to real Mysore sandalwood. On Etsy I bought Santal Exotique from The Exotic Island Perfumer and aged Mysore Sandalwood from La Via del Profumo. For a commercial fragrance, Crabtree & Evelyn Sandalwood (in the green box) is really nice. It’s discontinued, but still available on ebay and some discounters.

Shower with some of my Body Shop Satsuma products. Wonderful in this heat. With Seville a L’Aube on top.

We literally walked a total of 13 blocks up and back to a matinee movie earlier today. The walk back was like slogging through hot fog. Have to head downtown in the subway this evening. Trying to think what scent will gird me for that platform steaminess….

Wearing Andy Tauer’s Rose Delight oil today. It is indeed a delight and on me it has surprising longevity and sillage. Mr. A. says it smells “like a rose flavored snickerdoodle” which is an improvement on how he usually answers my “what does this smell like?” question (his usual answer: “perfume”).

Hi everyone! I feel like I’m early today. I caved today and purchased Nirvana Bourbon. It is going to be very nice for fall. At first it is pretty smoky, but settles into a creamy, non sweet vanilla. A little different for me, since I usually prefer sweet. I plan on layering with a vanilla lotion. Have a great vacation, Robin!

Hi all! Had to be at work super early and ended up grabbing Orange Star. After lunch, I crashed and burned for 3 hours after lunch. Now that Orange Star has faded into nothing, I am thinking of wearing vintage LHB in perfume form. I managed to talk a seller down from $150 to $115 for a 1 ounce bottle. Or maybe I should wear vintage Bal while reasoning with my Amazon card for a bottle of Beloved.

Back from another amazing perfume event at Arielle Shoshana! Carlos Huber is just as good looking in real life as in photos, and also very nice, charming, intelligent and deeply artistic.

Boutonniere No. 7 is a great illustration of how unique this line is. The fascinating thing is that Boutonniere is inspired by a night in May 1899, at the Foyer of the Opéra-Comique in Paris: “the crisp green scent of the men’s gardenia boutonnieres, enlivened with the bergamot and lavender colognes they wear.” It’s a floral that would be great on a man or a woman.

I also wanted to share this delightful article I came across on the rivalry between Charles Revson, founder of Revlon, and Estee Lauder:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2002/02/24/magazine/when-charlie-met-estee.html?pagewanted=all

I had Meadowsong for a while, but I think I was older than a teenager. Wasn’t very sophisticated or sensible, obviously, because I vaguely remember moving to it after Jolie Madame, Fidgi and Vivre. I wonder why I did that? I recall that the packaging was enchanting, so maybe I was duly enchanted.

The tide turns. I remember the point in the 1990s when I had a sudden craving for light, unisex perfumes and was practically begging a Neiman Marcus SA for something very different from what he’d been showing me. The best he could come up with was CSP Motu,* which I bought, though it wasn’t exactly what I envisioned. Hah, the time and $$$ I’ve spent in the last few years tracking down some of my 80s favs on ebay!

*I am positive that Motu came before Aqua Motu.

Greetings all from Malaga on a sunny Sunday morning. Yesterday I started in Angela Ciampagna “Aer”, a juniper-centred perfume meant to evoke the early morning mist. It gets some love from the cognoscenti but I just found it altogether too slight and ethereal. Changed after an evening shower into Parfums de Marly “Hamdani”. This is a big strong leather scent, I would think very masculine, and worth checking out if you’re a leather fan. I liked its richness but didn’t love it (usually I dislike leather so that is a compliment to Hamdani!) :^)

Today I can either upset my partner by accompanying an old friend on a visit to Spanish speaking relatives to interpret, or upset my friend by not doing so. (We’re sharing the apartment with this friend and his kids, and they have been less independent than we expected so partner and I have had little time alone together. His wife/ their mother died earlier in the year so I am inclined to be very understanding of whatever my friend wants to do).

Also: starting the day in Maria Candida Gentile “Leucò”, which is a seaside-ish scent with white flowers and salt water. Very light and most reviews mention poor lasting power; I’m wearing it as a morning scent as will be in a pool later on, so no point in choosing a longer-lived perfume.

I’ve dabbed on a little bit of SSS Nostalgie today. It’s the second attempt with this one; the first time it was . . . fine, but something about it bothered me. Eventually, I figured out what it was (it’s not for sharing in polite company). Maybe this time will be different, but in case it isn’t, well, one has options.

Well, not unmentionable in principle – but I can’t think of a polite way to put it. And Nostalgie turned out the same, more’s the pity! Though there’s a powdery dry down (it outwitted my shower) that I didn’t notice last time, and might please fans of powdery dry downs?

I will give it another go in the fall, should autumn ever arrive in Oklahoma.

Hello, weekenders and week beginners. I’m a bit earlier this morning because I keep waking. I can’t seem to get my body temperature right: it’s 4 degrees, and you’d think I’d be glad of all the snuggle I can find, but I keep getting too hot to sleep. I think I’m slightly anxious about going back to work today after my embarrassing collapse-thingy last week. Ah well–I shall just have to stick my nose in the air (or to my wrist: that would be more delightful) and tough it out. It’s not as though the sky will fall on my head, especially not if I wear Maharanih again. I can just catch the frayed remnants of last night’s application in the crook of my elbow, and I love it. Yep, me and Maharanih, we’re off to conquer the world. How super…

I find sleep temperature difficult, too. I love sleeping in a cool room, but I think when I get into a cold bed, I cover up too heavily, in an attempt to warm up, and then a few hours later I’m too hot. Keeping the top duvet above foot level while curling up initially (to get feet in warmer area) seems to help.

This weekend I’ve been wearing Carnal flower, and Chasse aux Pappilion. Grandparents have had the kids this weekend, and my husband and I went into London to see the Georgia O’ Keefe exhibition at Tate Modern, which was wonderful, I especially loved the paintings inspired by her synethesia, and her New York City scapes, which I hadn’t seen before, knowing mostly only her flower paintings, and stunning New Mexico landscapes.
Wandered through Borough market for lunch and along the river past the Golden Hind and The Globe in the warm sunshine.
such a relaxing and fun day.
