Thursday scent of the day 7/28

Posted by Robin on 28 July 2016 281 Comments

Prada 2015

Happy Almost-Friday, and happy National Milk Chocolate Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm testing La Femme Prada. I don't usually eat milk chocolate but I happen to have a Sicilian Pistachio & Rose Petal bar by Sucré in my stash, so I will be sure to polish that off later.

Reminder: on 7/29, we're doing Huesday on Friday — wear a fragrance inspired by Limpet Shell and/or Peach Echo, colors from Pantone's Spring/Summer 2016 collection. You can find the image and color descriptions here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

And now for something completely different……
    Parfum d’Ete Kenzo.
    Green, hyacinth, iris, oakmoss.
In the original bottle, Kenzo does some of the best.

In Aftelier’s Lumiere -so light and beautiful. And when I mean light, I mean it will be gone in an hour or so 😉 But I enjoy every minute..

Yesterday I spent the morning in Central Park with the babies and then we are going there again this afternoon. Trying to find some shade, and not be stuck in AC all day. Hope everyone has a good day ahead! Take care

L’Artisan Safran Troublant again. I’m getting a lot of wear out of it this steamy summer: it glows in the heat and humidity without feeling heavy.

Milk Chocolate Day, eh? Well, like the complete philistine that I secretly am, I’m going to have a Cadbury Jelly Popping Candy bar, which is milk chocolate loaded with tiny gummi jelly beans, wee little candy-shell-covered chocolates (we call ’em Smarties, Americans call ’em M&Ms), and Pop Rocks. It is SUBLIME. Chocolate SHOULD explode in your mouth!

I had an argument about M&Ms with some French people recently (I’m an American living in France). They said that M&Ms necessarily contained a peanut, while I said that that was just peanut M&Ms, and that plain M&Ms had no peanuts in them. They said I was confusing them for Smarties, which I said were little sugar wafers (I don’t if those are still even made!). Until I bring a bag of plain M&Ms to France from the US, though, I don’t think they’ll believe me.

I grew up in Canada, where Smarties are delicious chocolate discs wrapped in a candy shell (a lot like plain M&Ms). When I moved to the USA a coworker offered me some “Smarties”, and I was crushed to receive what I had grown up calling “candy pills”.

        I miss Canadian Smarties!!!!

I’ve had the discussion about M&Ms and Smarties with overseas friends, too. The sugar wafer Smarties are easy to find in the US. Chocolate button Smarties are delicious, but to me they are nothing like plain chocolate M&Ms. Chocolate Smarties are a more crunchy robust candy while M&Ms have a much more delicate shell.

Oddly, I have a vague memory of buying chocolate Smarties in Canada years ago and found they had a faint orange flavor. I don’t think this was true of chocolate Smarties I tasted in Europe.

Plain chocolate M&Ms are currently labeled “may contain peanuts” as an allergy warning, but of course they do not contain whole peanuts like the peanut M&Ms candy. How would a peanut fit in the red M&M’s tummy? Besides it’s obvious the yellow M&M already swallowed the peanut. Just look at their picture. 😉

        http://mms.wikia.com/wiki/M%26M%27S_Wiki

To add to the confusion, many years ago the plain chocolate M&Ms ingredient label included “peanut mass”. This lead to the rumor/urban legend that “all M&Ms contain peanuts.” Per my friend who was an executive at candy manufacturer Mars, peanut mass was used as a cost-saving extender ingredient to reduce the amount of chocolate in candy without affecting the flavor. Due to the increase in concern for peanut allergies over the past few decades, candy manufacturers have largely abandoned the peanut mass ingredient.

TMI? lol. I love candy from all over the world.

This is cobbled together from various Internet sources, but: once upon a time, in the UK, orange-coloured Smarties also contained orange-flavoured chocolate (and light-brown ones were coffee-flavoured chocolate). The coffee ones were discontinued ages ago but the orange ones were manufactured for decades: I can’t tell if that’s still true. It’s never been the case in Canada, as far as I know — every colour just contains regular milk chocolate — but there were limited-edition Orange Smarties once that were definitely orange-flavoured.

I do have to say that the chocolate in Smarties is much, much better than that in M&Ms. America does a great many things superlatively well but the manufacture of commercial chocolate is not one of them. Your chocolate tastes of sour milk.

And finally, American Smarties are Canadian Rockets, which we see in great profusion around Hallowe’en but rarely at any other time of the year.

How dare you say it tastes of sour milk when it so clearly tastes of wax?!?!

(Seriously–what IS Hershey’s even?!?! The only reason I like it at ALL is because it reminds me of my childhood.)

          • Koyel says:
            28 July 2016 at 4:46 pm

(To clarify: I’m with you 100 % about American mass-produced chocolate being shockingly gross.)

Yes! I knew I’d had orange-scented chocolate Smarties at some point in time. Thank you for reassuring me that I’m not losing my mind and/or not overwhelmed with memories of chocolate and citrus at the moment. I really could go for some Elixir des Merveilles right now. Mmmmm, candy and oranges. 😀

Hershey’s milk chocolate contains butyric acid, which accounts for the sour milk taste.

You smell wonderful, and that Cadbury Jelly Popping Candy bar sounds fabulous.

For a few years here in the US we had a supermarket chain called Fresh & Easy. It was a subsidiary of Tesco. They were my source for Cadbury and Nestle bars which are popular across the ocean. I love Lion bars and can sometimes find them here in the US, always a fun surprise.

When I travel outside the US my first stop*** in an overseas airport or food market is always the candy bars. I love to see what’s the same and what’s different in the world of sweets.

***First stop AFTER the perfume counter and duty free shop of course. My perfume-lover ID card doubles as a chocolate-lover ID card. 😀

I’m envious of your Cadbury selection. Dairy Milk is one of my favorite milk chocolates and with Smarties it would be divine. They certainly used to sell Smarties in the US, at least in South Texas. Do they not anymore? I always preferred them to m&ms because the texture was less waxy (a huge problem with American chocolates), and they had a thinner shell. Also, they were cheaper so Dad was more inclined to buy a larger packet and the other kids thought they were weird and didn’t try to make me share 🙂

Oof! I just looked again and my sentence is completely bass-ackward. Sorry. Smarties were better. The shell is crunchier and they aren’t filled with American chocolate-flavored wax.
I just asked my mom if she remembered them and she doesn’t, but suspects that he bought them from the huge salvage center he frequented for obscure machinery bits. They apparently carried tons of odd import candy and sodas.

Definitely agree the chocolate inside Smarties has a nicer flavor than the chocolate inside M&Ms. It’s like the difference between a Dairy Milk bar and a Hershey bar. And the candy shells are very different.

But as for me and my tastes, I will happily eat ALL the chocolate things. 😀

I’m with you, Tiffanie, I will eat all chocolate things. Maybe I should set up a taste test between Smarties and M&M’s today… that would require eating both bags in the name of science. When I’m in the UK, I love Galaxy bars.

          • MikasMinion says:

I used to love how Smarties came in a cardboard tube. They were such a treat. In NZ we have jaffas, too…which are spherical milk chocolate in a bright orange candy shell…they taste like orange and smell exactly like Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate perfume. I live above the world’s steepest street (Baldwin St. Dunedin) and during our chocolate festival they have a jaffa race where they roll jaffas down the street ( we have a bug cadburys factory in town). And, we also, have exploding jelly chocolate!!!! L’artisan, sadly, not so much.

So miserable! Why are offices COLDER in summer than they are in winter? I always carry a sweater and scarf in my purse in summer – grocery stores, restaurants, doctors’ offices – it’s like being in a walk-in freezer. I hate A/C and am glad I’ve never lived anywhere where I needed it.

I have been in a heat-related perfume rut for several days, but now I have a packet of samples from Posh Peasant’s going-out-of-business sale to inspire me. Today I’m sampling Eau de Tarocco. So far I like the ambery bitter-orange and am waiting for an evolution to happen in the dry-down.

Encre Noir pour Elle today, not much loved generally but pretty and summer appropriate if you just take it as it is. Wish I had realised it was milk chocolate day as I have just had some very nice very dark chocolate a colleague brought for the office.

I have ENpE that I bought early on in my journey. I still think it’s pretty but don’t wear it often, probably for the same reasons that you noted.
There was a perfumista on Fragrantica who had tons of perfume, some very expensive. She had ENpE listed as one of her top five frags. So really it’s just what we like.
      You smell lovely today! 🙂

When I tried it at about 70 degrees, it was nice but not inspiring. But below 40 degrees and especially above 80 degrees, it’s really gorgeous. The juniper/ herbal aspect was more prominent when it was cold, and the sand/ dry climate/ lemon notes really shine when it’s hot.

Not in the overt sense, like Bronze Goddess. But maybe in the “pale exotic florals” sense, like Guerlain Terracotta, although even that one is more beachy than this. So maybe only vaguely and by association.

Reveling today in Sycomore from the amazing hajusuuri. It was overcast and cool this morning, so the scent fit perfectly; I really love its wet peatiness. Tying up loose ends in lab this afternoon before I head off to VACATION tomorrow!!!!!! A week with my parents, a week with the boyfriend in Yosemite, then a week seeing friends and a quick overnight trip up to Napa for an exceedingly extravagant meal. The question, of course, is how much time it’ll take me to slide back into work mode when I come back in late Aust.

I’m in Byredo Flowerhead. It’s ok, but I’m being particular today since I went to bed at 3 am and somehow managed to get myself up for work. I require a constant IV drip of coffee and tea today.

Radiohead concert was awesome last night. It’s the fourth time I’ve seen them and a first for the husband, so he was quite thrilled. We were about 25 feet or so from the stage.

Holy cow was it freaking hot yesterday in NY. I was dripping with sweat the entire day – up until we were in the stadium, which was very well air conditioned. I don’t know how people can be out and about like that in the city. It’s just a radiating brick oven of heat – even in the shade. Despite constantly drinking from a large water bottle I still needed to go inside a shop and sit down so I didn’t faint from heat stroke.

Continuing a week of perfumes inspired by the Pantone colours. Today I am back in Limpet Shell; SOTD is “Aqua Motu” from Comptoir Sud Pacifique. Immortelle and salt water with some watery flowers in there somewhere (maybe the listed LOTV note?). Everything I like about this perfume, I like better somewhere else, like in Acqua di Sale from Profumum Roma or in Sables from Annick Goutal. Whereas everything I don’t like about this perfume, well, I don’t like it and wouldn’t like it any better from a different house.

For the third time this week my SotD = Eau des Merveilles. I’ve got EdM on the right arm and a bonus dab of Eau Claire des Merveilles on the left. Yes to Hermès!

With thanks to SheriG for her scent of the day combo yesterday, I will try layering these scents later this afternoon when I need a fragrance boost.

And SheriG, I’m SO very very glad I tried Eau Claire again! When I sampled it several years ago I could barely smell anything except the alcohol and very faint flowers, perhaps due to lingering medication-induced anosmia. But today I am really enjoying it. I keep doing the perfumista salute. If I’m not careful my wrist may get stuck under my nose. 😀

I forgot to mention that I recently discovered an amazing line of chocolate bars by a company called Compartes. The packaging is gorgeous (not that you can eat the packaging, of course!) and the bars inside are also beautiful and as good as they look! I’ve tried two of them, Cereal Bowl (white chocolate with Lucky Charms) and Coney Island (milk chocolate with caramelized waffle cone pieces). They are WAY too expensive ($11/bar) but an indulgent treat every once in a while.

Inspired by Bear, I did the baby bear version (2 spritzes) of vtg. Addict from a decant gifted to me by a perfume fairy. I could probably survive with 1 more spritz which I will do next time.

Catching up with some unanswered questions —

WendySue – Vacation perfumes – I got a 50 mL bottle of Yves Rocher Cuir de Vetiver and the other one is still a holy secret. I still have $350 of guilt-free spending to do 🙂

Koenigsberg – CSP Amour de Cacao fits squarely in the “I want to smell like a chocolate and/or vanilla cake / cupcake / muffin” fun category, just like Tokyo Milk Dark Bittersweet, Philosophy Fresh Cream, the Nobile 1942 Le Petit Chocolatier set…

I had been trying to order this but it is not on the website so the moment I saw a YR store, in Barcelona I went straight to the perfume section and scooped one up. I’ll bring some to our next get-together.

Good morning all! I just spritzed on some MOR Dal – something I’ve never seen mentioned anywhere. It looks to be long discontinued – I got it on super duper sale at Anthropologie many years ago. It’s probably the only perfume I bought purely for the packaging. The bottle has a cute little wooden horse cutout on it, kind of Ikea-ish. Scent isn’t bad, a very fresh rose.

Usually don’t have milk chocolate in the house as we eat mostly dark chocolate. But I just found some M&Ms and had some in honor of milk chocolate day! We just finished potty training the twins and used M&M as rewards! Chocolate works wonders!

Yay for potty training twins. My children were 18 months apart in age, so I can (almost) imagine your relief that diapers are finished. I used m&m’s and Skittles to motivate my kids in that direction.

I was in a non-perfume mood this morning after a tiring night and the memory of yesterday’s migraine, so I went with a tiny dab of No. 19, a tonic in all weathers internal and external. It’s already long faded, and just as well; I just found out that my 19-year-old cat, one of the great loves of my life, passed away. She’s been living with my dad since pets aren’t allowed where I live. So, don’t really want to ruin a perfume by creating a scent association on this sad day.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words! I’ve had a number of cats over the years, but this one was a very special animal with an old and wonderful soul. She did indeed have a long and fabulous life, and I know 19 is about 100 in cat years, but I just wish she could have gone on forever. And mixed in with the ache is the sense that she was a link back to a gentler time in my life — before all the horse caca of adulthood crowded in, before I lost my mom. Life just gets more and more bittersweet, eh? I’d better get me one of those jellies-and-pop-rocks chocolate bars and cheer up. 😉

I had a depressing incident with my beloved Chanel No. 19 today. This morning I was attending the funeral of one of my co-worker’s father. When I hugged her to give her my condolences she told me that the smell of my perfume would always remind her of that very sad moment. I was shocked, depressed and confused. I only had one spray in the back of my neck earlier in the morning (I needed a little comfort for the long day ahead that I am having). I don’t know how I am going to shake away that comment and keep enjoying one of my favorite perfumes. No more perfume wear for a funeral….

That was a hurtful comment, but keep in mind that she is “under the influence” of her grief, and will probably say and do any number of things that she wouldn’t if she were thinking more clearly. I think she is wrong, but if she makes the choice to connect the scent with sadness, that is her issue, not yours. Send her good thoughts and don’t absorb the negativity. I’m sending you positive thoughts, too.

I think that when you are distraught with grief, and nothing makes sense, your mind latches onto anything tangible…perfume, a piece of music….and that maybe what happened with your friend. I think that you can still wear No.19 ( and you might not be close enough, or hugging again) but if she mentions it just acknowledge her grief ( yes that was a terribly sad day and you wore that perfume at the funeral ) but also help her by adding that No.19 also reminds YOU of how beautiful life is, of how pleasure can be gained from ‘small things’ ( but don’t overdo it…with the how great life is stuff). Give her a hug and then physically give her space. I couldn’t listen to Beethoven’s Emperor Suite for years after my father died (20 years this week). Some things just make me sad. Kindness is good.

I don’t think that anyone can ever do the right thing at a funeral because there’s nothing “right” about the situation – it’s just raw and too much. You didn’t do anything with deliberate malice. Maybe she’ll look back on this day and remember more that you were there to support her than the perfume incident. Big hugs to you.

Woke up way too early on a hot sunny day and spritzed myself with Guerlain Herba Fresca, which lasted less than an hour. Followed with Lalique Encre Noir.

I can’t do vetiver in any other season but summer. I love it in the heat but really dislike having it on my skin if it’s under 75 degrees outside.

Wearing fragrances that I enjoyed through winter and spring in hot weather over the past couple of weeks and having them respond totally differently has made me wonder about the effect of warm air on perfume.

I work from home so 90% of my perfume-wearing takes place in my apartment. It’s warm in here year-round (75-80F) and is actually generally cooler inside in the summer. So why does one perfume smell and develop differently in 80 degree heat that comes from a radiator compared to the same temperature provided by the sun?

I wonder about this too. Some perfumes just grow in the sun, I think, and it isn’t clear to me that indoor heating has anything like the same effect. Perhaps it’s the smell of outdoors mixed with sun and the perfume?

I think there is usually more humidity outside than inside, and humidity affects how perfumes smell on me. I also think the sun warms our skin differently than artificial heating and causes more oiliness on the skin, which affects perfume as well. When I wear perfume outside on a hot summer day it does smell different – it dissipates faster as well.

These sound like good explanations. I’ve never noticed whether scents last longer on me in cold vs hot. I’m one of those people on whom scent dissipates really quickly so nothing lasts very long on me. My current theory is that it’s because I’m also one of those people who’s always cold. I *think* perfume lasts longer on me in warm weather. I’ll have to start paying attention, though – it might be the other way around.

Tried to come up with something to fit Peach Echo. Ended up going with Terracotta just because the color of the juice. But…I decided to combine with OJ Frangipani because I wanted to lighten it a bit – cut the Terracotta lushness. Best combo seems to be OJ then Terracotta then OJ again.

I’m now officially craving milk chocolate. I have no control when it is milk chocolate… I’ll just eat it till I get happily sick. Dark chocolate is different. Too much, and I get a headache. So, I tend to limit it to one small piece.

I layered OJ Frangipani over Bronze Goddess recently and it was a good combo. Sometimes Bronze Goddess is a bit too “umbrella drink” for me and the Frangipani helped cut it.

Hi, all. I’m under house arrest today until some people come to talk to me about installing ultra -fast broadband. Why do businesses these days think it’s acceptable customer focus to say that their “experts” will call between 8.00 a.m. and 2 p.m.? It must be possible to estimate their likely arrival time more accurately than a 6-hour time span! Oh dear–there I go again, exercising my Grumpy Old Woman muscles! To sweeten my mood, I’m wearing Rahat Loukoum, which doesn’t match the colour for the Friday project, but is at least sorta kinda in the right intensity band.

Robin, I hereby bequeath my entire share of milk chocolate, and all other chocolate for that matter, to you. There’s a local brand called Whittaker’s (very different from the sampler box I’ve seen in the States) that seems to excite American visitors. I wish I could give you some to see if you like it. I use it for the dear man’s chocolate chippie biscuits, and when I was at the supermarket the other day, some young tourists were reaching for the last block at the same time I did, which is how we got talking about it. I let them have it: their need seemed to be greater, and the dear one is perfectly happy with white chocolate and macadamia nuts for flavouring.

I bought this bar of Sucre by accident…I was so blinded by the lovely pistachios and crystallized rose petals that I did not notice it was milk chocolate. It is quite delicious but mostly I keep thinking how much MORE delicious it would be if it were dark chocolate instead.

But what are chocolate chippie biscuits??

Ah. I think I might be creating cultural confusion, because you might read “biscuits” as what I call “scones”. Chocolate chippie biscuits are butter-rich, very crisp, vanilla-flavoured cookies with large chips of chocolate in them. My husband has a quite unseemly devotion to them, and I make them for him far more often than I should.

Should I wear Seattle Chocolate today? Yeah….nah.
Inspired by the ‘nap under the desk’ brigade i spent a couple of hours yesterday working from my bed. Hadn’t done that since my student days living in a cold damp Wellington flat where the only possibility of warmth was from being under a duvet. Expecting snow today and feeling somewhat chilled due to listening to Austenfan’s Tullis last night ( though I did eat Lamington flavoured chocolate…raspberry and coconut, limited edition. Apple crumble chocolate next).
    Going for Cristalle…serene.

Once the standing desk and walking desk trend is over we can introduce the bed desk…Superking size, big down pillows, cashmere blankets and duvets. However, I draw the line at the bath desk (I saw the film Trumbo – where he worked in the bath and all I could think of was how that wouldn’t be so good with a computer)

I’m sure you can think of one or two people who should be encouraged to work in the bath, with many poorly-earthed peripherals stacked on a wobbly desk…

But – to music now – who or what is Tullis? I misread as Tallis first, now not so sure.

Ba ha ha – It is Tallis not Tullis.

A bath with gold faucets and a hairdryer nearby?

The heat has come to our town so what was I to do but throw on some Coromandel? I haven’t pulled this one out in a while but it is glorious.

I’m wearing Demeter’s Honey since I don’t have any milk chocolate, it’s sweet, and I need comfort after getting new glasses and being able to suddenly see … a lot of things that have gone downhill since my last prescription.

I remember when I first had to get glasses (I had been working in Germany, and realised that hitting the brakes on unrestricted-speed Autobahns so I could read the road signs probably wasn’t a great idea). Anyway, the point is, a little of the magic and mystery of the world died for for me when I realised that lights didn’t actually have soft hazy aureoles around them. Now I’m older and have the joy of both long- and short-sightedness to remind me that whatever glasses I am wearing, they are wrong. :^)

I thought I was adjusting until I realized the mirror I was using has also deteriorated with age. 😉

This reminds me of the following:

Man to Woman wearing eyeglasses: I didn’t know you wore glasses! You look better without them.

Woman to Man as she removes glasses and wears them again: That’s funny! You look better without my glasses!

It’s very good for milk chocolate, which I do not love, and would not have bought it if I’d noticed. Going to see what other bars this company makes.

Robin, if you like dark chocolate with all your hearth, and if you haven’t tried it yet, I recommend “Nibble Chocolate”. It is local here so I can find it in stores, but I think they also sell it on-line. Not affiliated.

Sous le Vent, twice in one week, there is a cinnamon-bark quality to this one that I just love. Maybe my little decant won’t last forever!

SOTD was Puredistance White, which is becoming a favorite. Plus it was comforting for this rainy day!

I love how all your posts add to my perfume education. Every day I look up your scents and then I sort of go…oh, so Cazaubon’s having that sort of a day.

Posting very late today… where did the time go? SOTD is the same as yesterday’s, Studio Red Rose. It’s a shame that it does not match either of the Huesday colors in the slightest.

Just a spritz of Fou d’Absinthe on my clothes today – still hacking away. Learned from a neighbor last night that our house was owned by a smoker for decades (I am highly sensitive). Initiate nicotine abatement plan.
