Friday scent of the day 7/15

Posted by Robin on 15 July 2016 170 Comments

Nice, France, 2015

It's Friday. Our community project for today: wear one of your "top 10 of summer" fragrances (unless it's winter where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of winter" scents).

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing Hiram Green Dilettante.

Reminder: 7/22 will be Flashback Friday — wear a fragrance you wore "back in the day". I think this was suggested by Bee and MikasMinion?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Poor Nice, and poor France.
Wearing Carnal Flower, such a shining example of French perfumery at it’s best. I put on 3 different French body oils as well. Just because.

I tried and fell madly, deeply, truly in love with Carnal Flower two years ago. I’m already on my second bottle and it is still a great favorite.

Austenfan, I’m curious as to which body oils you wear with it.

Today I put on Nuxe, Lierac 3 Fleurs Blanches and Sanoflore huile des délices. Most French dry oils smell similar to Nuxe. the Lierac is less tropical and more of a white floral. Mind you, Carnal Flower is drowning all of them.
Another oil I’m very fond of is the Bio Beauté par Nuxe huile satinée nourrissante. It adds a little more citrus on top, which is a nice touch.

In my late teens, this was a favorite. I still vaguely recall the scent and am wondering if there is any similarity to Carnal Flower, even if it is a colder interpretation of tuberose? I recall the honeysuckle note.

      You must smell wonderful!

I did a bad job of picking out a top 10 summer fragrance, and instead simply went with one that would make me happy, given the unhappy conclusion last night to Bastille Day. (Thanks for the calming photo, Robin.)

So I went with Rose Ikebana, which actually turned out to be a subideal choice, because even though it made me happy for the first hour, it then disappeared completely, despite the ~six sprays I had used. Tonight I plan to drown my unhappy thoughts in wine and baked camembert.

Hi scent twin! You smell mervelous. Eau des Merveilles is more orange zest for me in warm weather, more pepper in cold weather. It’s warm here, so today I’m getting delicious salty citrus.

I can’t say this is a summer favorite, but I’m wearing Copal Azure. I wanted to finish up the sample. This week has been very “meh” for me since I’ve been dealing with a very stubborn stomach bug (still) and just wearing scents that are ok, but nothing I really love.

Like others, I wanted to wear a French perfume and went with 31 RC – it also has an air of backbone and defiance that seemed the right choice.

I have since added Lys Mediterranee which is very much a top 10 of summer for me.

    Twins, Robin!

I sort of feel like I cheated because I was hoping you’d pick something I could latch onto as I just don’t have the inspiration to figure out what my ten best of summer actually are. I don’t know if it’s simply me, or the impact of various world events, but I’ve been reaching for warmer, comforting scents even in the summer heat. I plan on blasting myself with Demeter’s Honey later, as it’s warm and sweet but somehow still summery. You know, bees … 😉

I think the edp’s of both Cristalle and No19 have a lot of similarities. Not sure if they always have or whether it’s just the current formulations, but when I spritzed a wrist each at the shop a few weeks ago I found they weren’t dramatically different at all.

And I don’t think you can be wearing too much 🙂

Yesterday’s horrific event completely changed my intended SOTD from my favorite playful summer scent to one more suitable to the mood of the day, Jean Charles Brosseau Fleurs d’Ombre Ombre Bleue. Two summers ago I posted a loving tribute to this scent and rereading it this morning (https://freebox.it.com/2014/06/24/tuesday-scent-of-the-day-624/%3C/a%3E%29 nearly brought tears to my eyes. 1)Summer scent: The Body Shop Satsuma Body Mist layered on top of Florida Water. This is what summer scent smells like to me: lots of clean, soapy,. sweet citrus and herbs, sprayed all over to wake you up and get you going on a hot day.

2)It’s not hot here- it’s perfect for the next few days- highs of 75F and partly cloudy! Perfect for long, soul restoring biking and hikes.

    3) This seems to be a year of being more aware of the world’s never ending capacity for stupidity, hatred and ugliness. Thank goodness for sites like this.

I’m coming down with a pesky summer cold, and after spraying myself liberally with osmanthus Yunnan (a large manufacturers sample from lovely mrsdalloway) this morning had a luxurious and sweet scented mid morning lie down.
wearing Seville a l’Aube this afternoon, a new favourite for this summer, and one I find myself reaching for when I’m not feeling 100%, comforting and invigorating in equal measures, need both today.
Appalled and shocked at the events of last night, like many others here. thinking about the victims, and survivors, and the horror that will be surely etched in their memories for all time. Such a cowardly attack.

I am wearing my sample of Frapin 1679 absolu, which I am completely in love with but don’t think can afford…my sample of Frapin 1270, which I am also in love with, got somehow lost, but it’s OK, because the bottle is coming..I am a naughty naughty girl…

In case anybody is interested, Frapin 1270 goes for $104 +$16 shipping at http://www.maisonparfum.com…beats $195 on Luckyscent or elsewhere.. there are 3 I believe rock-bottom priced Frapins on Fragrancenet (Speakeasy, Boisee, Terre de Sarment), but they are out of 1270..

I would normally have worn OJ Frangipani just because it was a top 10 summer last year – probably the one I reached for most often. Since I have a deep fondness for green, summer scents are easy for me.

But…instead I went with the scent my sister brought me from her cruise and visit to Nice last year. Fragonard Jasmin Perle de The.

MPG Ambre Dore for my winter pick. Pretty sure it’s what I chose last year too, and it’s still my favourite amber.
Sooooo good. And helping keep me happy for my 4am finishing shift :-/

Just read Kevin’s review of this…and it sounds really complicated. Is the leather strong, or the oud or mostly amber? Sounds pretty cool. 4am is pretty brutal. Have a good weekend!

It’s mostly amber, soft and fluffy, but the oud (and saffron?) gives it a bit of interest so it’s not just a smothering, sweet amber bomb. You can definitely notice oud but it blends so well with the amber that it loses some of its bite. (I personally love the smell of oud but this is subtle)

Today I say “yes to Hermes” with Eau des Merveilles, a true favorite in the summer, wonderful any day of the year. When my nose needs a break from my love of flowers and vanilla, or my brain needs a boost on a rough day, Eau des Merveilles is perfect.

Weeks ago someone here mentioned reading something from Pema Chödrön. Thank you for sharing that. I’ve been enjoying her writing and am comforted by this thought:

“The experience of a sad and tender heart is what gives birth to fearlessness. Conventionally, being fearless means that you are not afraid or that, if someone hits you, you will hit him back. But we aren’t talking about that street-fighter level of fearlessness. Real fearlessness is the product of tenderness. It comes from letting the world tickle your heart, your raw heart. You are willing to open up, without resistance and shyness, and face the world.” — Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche

Okay…so i took an old post by NozKnoz as my inspiration for my husband’s work part last night. It was the post with actor Tony Sheldon getting into drag to play Bernadette in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. I channelled the mid-way point in the transformation: short grey hair dragged off face ( with black hairband) , too much eye makeup, glasses..with leopard skin coat, mickey mouse t shirt, jeans and angry starfish sneakers. I wore YsUzac Satin Doll – kind of weird perfume. Everyone else was in black tie and little black dresses as it turned out to be a retirement dinner for a professor who has been working 30 years at the university (minor detail, no one told me…i.e. My husband never mentioned it. I picked him up from work and he was wearing a suit! He didn’t notice my outfit…it was dark…said I smelt weird, which I did).
At our table were a virologist from India, staff and Phd students from Turkey, Nepal, Iran, New Zealand, Malaysia, China, Romania and us. There was so much chat ( about parasites and stuff ), such incredible warmth and support between the students, so much curiosity, intelligence and laughter….similar situation at the next table, and the next…a room full of good people…multiplied. Need to remember that!

You looked deeply cool, and I bet every other woman was jealous of your panache and your comfort, as their arches ached and their décolletages got goosebumps! And you had a great time, more importantly. All of which shows that matters is the company and the conversation, not the coiffure and the costume.

What with the overall horror and tension in the world and having to take all four kitties to the vet for their annual stabbing and prodding this morning, I eschewed my most summery scents and wore a heavy dose of Cuir de Russie and a spritz of 31RC in my hair. I just couldn’t choose (and I needed Chanel today), and they layer well. We are now home and the felines are sulking around, trying to decide if cuddles are worth forgiving me for four hours in the car and being roughed up by some stranger in a room smelling of dog.

They’ve decided, since the vet squirted dewormer on the back of their necks and it tastes nasty, that I’m at least a handy tool since I can brush out the stuck-together fur. They just decided that they’re feeling well enough to go outside and laze in the garden and Doolittle forgot she was mad and stood on my foot for a few seconds before she went out.

Morning all. It’s the depths of winter and mood here. Yesterday, my Friday, I wore a winter send all-times favourite, Black Cashmere. The heating was awful: listening to the students “explaining” their cheating was like watching fish writhing on a hook. I hated it. I think we were fair: I hope so. God knows there’s enough injustice in the world without contributing even a tiny skerrick more. Today, I intend to hunker down against the storm and finally -finally –get my own work done. I’m wearing Cotomsndel, another all-times fave. It’s rich and slightly demanding in summer heat –you have to think carefully about committing to its big bloom–but it’s perfectly wonderful in winter, complex, earthy, full of subtle hints about this and that and sly digs and the odd sharp comment. Mostly, though, it’s just a gloriously coherent nice smell.

I think you hand went a little too far to the right, and you meant to say you are wearing “Coromandel”. In which case, you smell wonderful! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who enjoys wearing scents normally reserved for winter in the summer.

Oh, goodness! I didn’t even notice my typos! I make gazillions on my iPad– I have a fat finger, I suppose. Yes, it’s gorgeous Coromandel that I’m wearing, and even Dakkie likes it. He’s just offered me Fuzzy Logic, a well-worn knitted mouse, grey, red eyes, no remaining tail (worrying!) and bunted me with the top of his head, which means, “Ear rubs, please!” When he doesn’t like a perfume, he blinks and pootles off.

I’m finally able to return to NST. My only regret is that it is during such a time of sadness for the horror in France. My thoughts and love go out to all those affected!

Since visiting the hospital in Hamburg in January, my health has greatly improved! I’ve lost 15 kilos (so far), have very little pain, am nearly off all meds and am more mobile. My perfume acquisitions have been wilder than in past years, but it is a way to celebrate!

Anyway, today I have been wearing Ramon Monegal’s Dubai Next to Me. This is a VERY concentrated scent that would wear me if I didn’t just spray once into the air and walk through it. (I have lots of power scents, but this is the only one I apply this way.) It is great for hot and/or humid weather, but I find it just a little too masculine. So what works for me is to first spray on some FM Portrait of a Lady before I walk through the mist of Dubai Next to Me. This makes it just perfect for me and I went shopping today and several strangers and one saleswoman commented on how great I smelled! This was the most number of people ever complimenting my fragrance on one day!

I just want to put in a good word for a very light, affordable, beachy fragrance I love: Lancaster Sole di Capri edt. This was a limited edition for last summer. They bring out a different l.e. summer scent every year. I loved it so much I googled and was able to find it is still available from a supplier on Amazon.co.uk
I still have half a bottle from last year, but now I have a back up.

I owe a few perfumistas here some private emails. Feel free to nudge me if I don’t contact you soon.

I remember the Lancaster sun products having a very nice scent. I think we used to pinch them from a friend’s mom because we liked the perfume and they were fancy (well, fancier than what we kids were allowed to use). I don’t suppose the line is any easier to find in the US now than it was then, so I will just have to enjoy them vicariously.
