Friday scent of the day 6/17

Posted by Robin on 17 June 2016 266 Comments

Pantone colors of the year 2016

Friday is here! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Kenzo, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I am wearing Kenzo Air. It's the only Kenzo I own in a full bottle since I gave away my bottle of Kenzo Amour Le Parfum.

Reminder: on 6/24, we're doing A House Divided — wear two fragrances from the same house, but don't layer (one on each wrist, or whatever). Suggested by Lisa D.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Finally! I made it. This week was the beginning of swim team in the morning and the rest of the day – chaos! I can’t wait for summer camp to begin. SOTD is a long neglected Christiane Celle Le Chevrefeulle. I wanted that lovely summery vibe. This was actually one of my earliest “niche” purchases right when I was falling down the rabbit hole in 2008, so it has a special place in my perfumista heart. I hope everyone has a great weekend!!

To my complete surprise I don’t have a single Kenzo: I had Tokyo and a set of five minis, but clearly I have given them all away. Instead I’m in a sample of Five O’Clock Au Gingembre, which is nice enough but honestly feels like Serge’s Greatest Hits, about six of his scents (primarily Rousse) averaged out and bottled.

No Kenzo in my collection either…

For today I finally finished the last of my Brigitte….this is my favorite of the Toccas for its spices (ginger, saffron), fruits (rhubarb, papaya) florals (Moroccan rose, iris) and woods (sandalwood) and the absolutely delicious Pannetone accord….I may have to get another bottle when I get a Sephora discount…

Hope y’all have a peaceful and easy Friday!

Sorry for tempting you! I like the Toccas too…they are easy to wear, office friendly and a great price…my childhood friend who has been getting into perfume (no thanks to me!) just fell in love with Graciella (sp???) so I bought her a travel spray of it….

I am also a Tocca fan – nothing wrong with being pretty and easy 😉 Florence is also nice – a super easy to wear, slightly green gardenia. I will have to check out Brigitte, as than pannetone accord sounds delicious.

That sounds lovely! I’ve tried a few of the Toccas and something in them put me off — some type of musk-ness that rubs my nose the wrong way? — but I should give this one a sniff. Theorema is my go-to pannettone scent — so yummy!

Theorema is not so easy to come by, right? So this might be a good substitute as it is easily available at Sephora…..

Like Elisa I would love your take on it…and how is the longevity on all of them?
You know I just thought of another natural that I like which has really good longevity….1000 Flowers Narcotic Flowers which reminds me very much of the original Karl Lagerfeld Chloe from the late 1970s ( I still have the pure perfume of it hidden in my basement)….

Fully intended to give one of my two Kenzo samples (Amour and Jungle L’Elephant) some attention today, but I discovered upon waking that a small bottle of Natori I’d placed on my glass bedside table had tipped over and spilled a bit, so I decided to sop up a bit of the puddle with my wrists and arms…elegant, I know. But still, couldn’t let it go to waste. So I smell good, but not of Kenzo.

But on the topic of Kenzo, I remember a friend of mine wearing Kenzo Tokyo years ago, shortly before I got into perfume, and I think I remember loving it. Anyone remember that one?

so today I’m in Houbigant Oranger en Fleurs (love love love)

anyone tried Creed Iris Tubereuse? I understand there’s virtually no iris, mostly white floral/tuberose (which is fine by me). thoughts?

Tried the Iris Tubereuse from a tester at N-M, and really liked it. I’m a tuberose person, so its dominance was fine by me…it’s not irisy. Promptly forgot about it, since the only purchase option is a HUGE bottle.

Kenzo Flower. I have a carded sample which is my only Kenzo. It isn’t in my usual repertoire of scent families, if it is in one at all, but I am having fun with the cosmetic floral powdery scent. I hadn’t realized how many fragrances were in the line, which is admittededly ” different” and seems a bit shunned. I’m looking forward to reading about what the NST collectors have tried. In any case, at least the bottles are entertaining and look attainable at reasonable cost!

    Happy Friday everyone!

I think part of the issue, at least in the US, is very poor distribution. It is not easy to find much other than Flower & a few of its flankers.

This must be it. I went looking for Amour yesterday and couldn’t find any. Kenzo is much easier to find in Europe. The parfumeries in my husband’s backwater hometown in Germany have pretty much all of them.

There were quite a few on Fragrancenet, some of which are mentioned here. I was surprised to see that many were developed by very distinguished perfumers.
I hadn’t explored Kenzo fragrances because the fashion house seems so outre. On the other hand, many of the houses with great fragrances are, but the perfumes are more approachable (?) like Comme des Garçons. Or as you said, better distributed or perhaps marketed.

Ok I’m feeling brave, so I’m wearing Jungle l’Elephant which is the only Kenzo in my collection. I absolutely love it, too, but have always thought of it as a winter perfume – it smells marvelous left on a wool scarf – it’s already climbing into the 80s and I have a ton of shopping to do this afternoon so we’ll see how that divine licorice note smells by the end of the day 🙂

Nope, no Kenzo to be found in my collection.

I stopped by Saks yesterday and tried the new Prada Olfactories scents — absolutely love the packaging, but wasn’t enthralled by any of the scents. Nevertheless, I did take home to samples one of which inspired me to dust off my Prada l’eau Ambree.

SOTD is l’eau Ambree! Great summer amber.

No Kenzo for me either. I went, then, with some vintage Lucien Lelong Sirroco, a Shalimar with Bois des Iles’ gingerbread heart and a sprinkle of oakmoss. Lovely if you’re into that sort of thing.

I went to the new Saks in Houston and found some new surpises! All the Hermessences save MP, some Guerlain extraits (as a lover of vintage, new Vol de Nuit parfum is close to vintage, with the top notes being most attenuated), some Serge Lutens, including three of the gold ones and worst of all! Finally tested Ostara. Now I’m upset with myself for not snapping up a bottle when they were on clearance!

They only have maybe a third of the export SL’s, sadly. The Hermessences though are lovely, of course. Somehow we lost Frederic Malle, though, which hurts.

I was going to go with L’Elephant, but my sample must have gone off – it was much too sweet and made the insides of my elbows turn red. Scrubbed and switched to Le Galion Iris, which seems to blend with the Pantone colors of the day pretty well.

Not quite a full-on rash – the redness faded pretty quickly once I had washed L’Elephant off. I do get rashes from perfumes occasionally – the worst was with OJ Orris Noir. That rash lasted nearly a week. Made me very sad, because Orris Noir is lovely.

Up until my vacation last month, I had no Kenzo in my collection, but duty free offered a set of minis in the cutest little bottles – replicas of the full sized ones.
So, I have L’eau Par Kenzo Eau de Toilette, Kenzo Amour Eau de Parfum, Kenzo Parfum d’Ete Eau de Parfum, Flower by Kenzo Eau de Parfum, and Kenzo Jungle Eau de Parfum.
I went with Flower EDP for today. A nice warmer weather scent.

I dropped my decant of L’Elephant last year ( Ask me how long my bathroom smelled like cumin), and a friend sent me a flower decant, so I was thrilled to see the mini set. There was also a set of mini Aqua Allegorias and I didn’t have any of that selection. Duty free score all round.

Really? I find it more towards Bornéo 1834 or even richer and more intense, but the problem is that it lacks the performance in terms of sillage and tenacity.

I never tried Borneo 1834. But I think maybe we are just talking of different aspects of the same scent 🙂 It is not the same as Sables, but Bond-T has some “dry grasses” aspect for me.

Now that you had mentioned it, I mulled hard over this. I think it must be the tobacco facet of the immortelle and the osmanthus in Sables and Bond-T, respectively.

I was surprised that Luca Turin loved it so much that he hunted down the identity of his unknown sample. Then again, my nose is embryonic compared to his. It’s ripe fruit and leather- probably better in cooler weather, but I do think it gets better with skin time.

Even if I never make it to NYC I can still order online…..they have some very interesting e.o.s and their enfleurages are so tempting too….especially the lilac one made in upstate NY…I bet they would be great to use in a solid perfume (the wheels are already turning in my perfume obsessed brain!)

Got it! I really like Parfum d’Ete – it’s green but not too sharp, and gently floral with lotv being the most dominant to my nose and hyacinth a close second. It has that weird synthetic vibe like Summer does, but for some reason I enjoy that in both of them.

I don’t like Summer (it seems curdled to me), but I know what you mean about Parfum d’Ete having a slightly synthetic feel to it. I still think it’s nice, though I wind up spritzing my sheets with it rather than wearing it now.

Ew, curdled? I like Summer quite a bit – it really does smell like summer to me. Hmm. Curdled. Gosh, I also discovered Smell Bent’s Prairie Nymph last week and was smitten, and our beloved hajusuuri commented this week that it smells like … was it rotten fish? Something equally revolting, and fish was mentioned for sure. I hate fish. I really love how different all of our experiences are, it’s such fun!

Speaking of Kenzo: Has anyone else noticed that Amour seems to be harder to find these days, at least in the US? I went looking for it at Bloomingdale’s yesterday, to try it again, and they didn’t have it: Only Flower and its various flankers. They used to have it at Sephora too, but no more (though it is on their website). Was Amour not selling very well over here?

I went in search of a replacement bottle about a year ago, since I was close to draining my first (. . . probably–hard to tell with the opaque plastic). At that time, the rumor was that it was reformulated when they switched to only using the fuchsia color for all three sizes. I found a gift set on ebay with the tangerine 75mL, a fuchsia mini, and a bottle of “body milk.” It smells the way it was “supposed” to, and I am happy I got it!

yes and the general consensus from what I read is the reform is not as good as the original which is why I haven’t bought it…loved the original but never got around to purchasing a full bottle…so many perfumes and so little time!

Ah. You must be talking about Inverness, or the other Inverness in my case. Which has the added twist of recently being anointed (or accused of being?) “the other Martha’s Vineyard.” But when I was a girl, I was told that Martha’s Vineyard was the other Nantucket. And Nantucket, for as many decades as I have visited, has always been described as, “not what it used to be like.” !!

I, too, am Kenzo-less. Instead, I’m sampling AC Oolang infini. It doesn’t smell like oolong tea (to my nose, anyway) but it is interesting, and challenging to describe — delicate, warm, lots of gaiac, a little floral, a little tangy.

    Happy Friday to all!

When I visited the Atelier Cologne boutique for the first time in January 2013, I smelled through the range and I could barely detect Oolanf Infini. Not one for giving up, I ended up buying the soap instead (I was able to detect the fragrance from the soap).

I do not have any Kenzo Fragrances. I woke up wishing I was going to the shore instead of work, so today I chose Soleil Blanc, a Tom Ford Fragrance. It just is so beachy, a more refined Bronze Goddess. I just wish it had a little more sillage, every once in a while I get wifts, but can’t really smell it…hope others can, because it’s really lovely. Good for the office, and beach dreaming.

Well, I seem to be alone in wearing Eau de Fleur de Magnolia.
I haven’t worn it in quite a bit, but I find that I have used up almost half my bottle.
It is surprisingly lost lasting for such a light scent and has a bit of spicy warmth to my nose.
    Have a Happy Friday, everyone!!

Scent twin today. This is my first and only FB of a Kenzo fragrance, which I recently blind bought for a good price on eBay. I love it! Bright, light, and perfect for very hot days. I think this one is very underrated. I’ve been wearing it a lot lately.

I do have minis of Amour (like) and Amour Indian Holi (also like, but too similar to Amour and disappointingly, no saffron, pepper, or other spicy notes that it’s name promised) and Flower (which I don’t really care for, but shamelessly keep for the adorable mini bottle).

I’m wearing Kenzo Flower L’elixir, witch is a very nice smokey, woodsy and sweet oriental with much presence and depth.

It reminds a lot of the discontinued and lovely Flower Oriental, but has more sweetness and a big dose of syrupy raspberries.

There is so little Kenzo today, I almost feel obligated to wear some Amour to keep the project alive! I am scentless at the moment, however. I usually wear Amour in the evening, as it feels cozy and clean after a shower. I own a mini of Jungle L’Elephant and I NEVER reach for it. I suspect that today will not break that trend.

Today is (sort of) the start of my summer vacation, yay! I will need to return to school in a couple of weeks to move into my new classroom (I get a window!!!), but that won’t be too painful. I definitely want to have that done early rather than putting it off until August. It will feel good to know it’s all set up and waiting for me when I’m rested and refreshed.

        😀

There was a period in the 70’s (when a lot of schools were built, it seems) that they thought natural light and windows were a distraction to the learning environment. Ya’ gotta wonder what were they thinking?!

I went to those schools! I don’t know what the thought process was. I was still distracted even without windows. There were also a lot of shared classroom spaces without walls, which was chaotic for 4th grade classes. I’m a teacher, and I dearly love my 4 windows.

Kenzo: don’t have one, and with still around 300 samples rattling around I don’t want one this year, thanks. So this week has been a week of Guerlains:

Mon: Jicky – nice but not really me
Tue: L’Homme Idéal – very good, maybe a bit short-lived
Wed: Heritage – fabulous! I will likely get at least a decant of this.
Thu: Eau de Guerlain – meh

SOTD today was “Shalimar” (or “Shah Limar” – I enjoyed that!) but after an 05:00 start I managed to leave my decant at home after spraying very lightly, as I wasn’t sure how it would work on my skin. I liked what I smelled but it didn’t survive a stressful Eurostar journey to London for a tricky meeting, and I haven’t been able to re-test. I’m on the return train back to Paris now and not a trace of Shalimar left except the smooth skin scent of the late dry down.

As I work through my samples, I mark them as ‘No’ (usually) or ‘longlist’ or ‘shortlist’. Every now and again I mark one for re-test and Shalimar falls into that camp.

I’ve tried both earlier in the year. I liked Habit Rouge but didn’t love it – it didn’t stand out enough from other things I was testing at the time. I think I tried Mitsouko for Chypre week? Good, but more interesting than enjoyable and could have lasted longer. I also tried the current L’Heure Bleu at the airport and enjoyed it.

Don’t own a full bottle of Kenzo and no samples either. The only thing I’ve ever smelled is Flower and some flankers, none of which I liked. I’m wearing a mystery scent which I *think* is from Neiman Marcus. It’s an unlabeled sample… I’m normally pretty fastidious about labeling a sample if unmarked and putting it in glass if it’s in plastic if I’m not going to use it right away, but I found this lil straggler at the bottom of my purse. I think it might be Profumi del Forte. Alas, I’m awaiting anagnorisis.

I was given a bottle of Kenzo fragrance as a leaving present back in the early 90s when I moved to a new job. It was an uneven rounded shape of bottle, with a large stopper shaped like a rose or blossom of some kind if memory serves. Eau d’Ete springs to mind, but the bottle advertised these days isn’t the same, so perhaps I have the name wrong. It smelled lovely though, I do remember that.

No fragrance today, didn’t even apply moisturiser to my face before our supermarket run! It’s our first full day at home after 2 weeks with friends in The Woodlands, Texas – long overnight flight home on Wednesday, with a ‘recliner’ in front of me for the whole flight (as there was on our outbound journey!) & disruptive seat-kicking children behind us, so no sleep at all – gave up at 10:30pm last night & we both slept for around 11 hours! Chilly, windy & wet here at home in Aberdeen, Scotland. Have worn Penhaligon’s Bluebell every day of the holiday, very much appreciated (as I have mentioned on here before) by the male half of our hosts!

Today I’m wearing a little ganesh pendant carved out of a ruby that a friend made for me and a rudraksha mala from the mala guy in front of the Ramana ashram in Tiruvannamalai, India. So naturally my SOTD is a sandalwood bomb: pure mysore sandalwood oil layered with VdP Chillum

I remember being able to buy statues and trinkets carved out of sandalwood in India in the early 90’s. They were very common and inexpensive. Now a tiny bit of the oil (3mls or so) goes for around $80 if you can get it at all. When I was there in January I couldn’t find any kind of sandalwood oil for sale (the mala guy had a plastic bag under his table with loose beads in it and he strung together a sandalwood mala for me while I waited.) I guess there is a ban on it because the trees have become scarce because of over use. What is sold as ‘mysore’ sandalwood these days comes from trees grown in Indonesia. There is also sandalwood from Australia which smells a little more fruity/sweet but is still divine.
So hang onto your tiny vial of mysore!

I have both Flower and Jungle l’Elephant; I wore Flower yesterday and today just the tiniest bit of Jungle. This is usually a favorite wintertime evening scent for me so it’s a bit much on a hot summer day.

I haven’t been participating or posting for a couple of weeks… very little perfume. This past weekend I had 24 hours of Music Together training, and have assisted in a preschool classroom, taught a music class, planned music for Vacation Bible School and helped with a ukelele camp for 5-7 year olds over the past couple of weeks. In the fall I will start teaching preschool music classes at the school my son attended. Coming from IT this is a big career change and I am both energized and exhausted! I don’t have a professional background in early childhood or music (although I am a very active amateur musician) so I have a busy summer ahead getting ready.

I have 5 Kenzos: Flower, Amour, Winter (in Russian Matryoshka doll), Summer and Jungle. I don’t wear most of them! Today, in honor of Robin’s schedule, I sprayed Flower and Amour on the top of my hands, Summer and Winter on my wrists. I will spray Jungle in the kitty bathroom.
Amour smells so good with its rice-y smoothness. Summer has a beachy/windy ozone-y mimosa scent that works so well in summer. Winter has a bit of woodiness that announces the “flower” scent is for winter, not spring. Jungle has that spicy cardamom goodness that I can only enjoy in the air, not on my person.
Of them all, the winner is Amour or Summer, for me.

I forgot to add Kenzo Flower – doesn’t work for me at all but I remember a time, long ago, when it might have seemed pretty and a bit odd. Maybe in the late 60s…

Wearing Kenzo Air, and this is the only Kenzo I own in a full bottle, and I bought it blind following Robin’s recommendation. It is a fun one which I always appreciate in my fragrances!

Wearing Kenzo Tokyo…pale ginger and green tea. I bought it from the reduced to clear table a couple of years ago when I had a thing for perfumes with geographical place names…mostly CdG as it turned out.
The last time I was in Paris I spotted Kenzo on the Pont Neuf. He was extremely stylish in navy and brown. It was a strange day, travelling with a NZ friend who was tracking down the birth place of his ancestors ( which turned out to be the ugliest town in all of France…a bit sad). The day I saw Kenzo was the day I began to suspect I might be pregnant…totally unrelated to the fashion designer ( probably don’t need to add that ). Given my complete absence of maternal instinct it was a bit of a shock.

I am impressed by the fact that you knew what Kenzo looked like. I had to google him.

He used to have (may still have) very distinctive hair and glasses – plus a higher profile in magazines than he does now.

Kenzo UFO. It’s spicy and metallic, and actually just perfect for today. Wish I had a jug of this 🙁

Wearing Kelly Caleche today and loving it! I want to thank those of you who offered advice a while back about this one. It DOES smell like Rose Ikebana to me, but with more heft. I would still love to get Rose Ikebana at some point, but KC is quelling my desires for now.

Also, I have been forever trying to find something to replace perhaps my favorite fragrance of all time, the original Kors Michael Kors from 2003. I have yet to find something to match its “wine & roses”, but I found a tip online that Queen by Queen Latifa was worth considering if you miss Kors Michael Kors. I picked it up for a song recently and while not an exact dupe by any means, it is quite lovely. I don’t think I had ever tested that fragrance before despite my frequent drugstore wanderings, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Ugh. In my excitement about KC I didn’t read the entire question for this post.

I have one Kenzo but not wearing today (obviously): Amour.

      So sorry about that!

Another with no Kenzos, and I’m not even sure if I’ve tried any. I’ll remedy that today, as I’ve seen Flower in local shops.

This morning, I can still smell SL Bois et Fruits from a little dab last night. It’s lovely, but I don’t think I can justify a FB, because it is quite similar to Bois de Violette and I already have a back-up bottle of that (and keep thinking I might need a back-up to the back-up).

    My 2 kenzo’s are Flower & l’Elephant, I love both, but only in certain moods/ weather/seasons.
I’m doing a Rose week. wearing Rossy de Palma today, one of many gorgeous rose samples sent to me by the lovely and very generous AnnE.
It’s gorgeous, I think I would be seriously tempted to buy a bottle if it was a tad stronger, projection slightly better. Love the incense & geranium in it tho, and really love the opening notes. Really liked Paul smiths Rose which I sampled yesterday, a really pretty, summery rose.
Looking forward to sampling FM’s Une Rose tomorrow, which has been on my list for ages.

No Kenzos here, either in bottle or sample form. I tried Flower a while ago, and it did not work for me.

So instead my SOTD = ELdO’s Like This, which had the most true-to-life ginger note I have ever smelled in a fragrance. I also made the annoying discovery that the sample set of ELdO that I got from Sephora seems to be evaporating at a rapid clip. 🙁

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

    5 days in a row – I think it’s a record for me! I *** cough cough *** don’t have any Kenzo *** cough cough ***

Sighted in NYC – it could rival the worst of the Don’t Wear This TV segments or magazine articles- petite woman carrying an oversized Louis Vuitton tote with the brown picnic squares pattern wearing an A-line Black on top, Tie-diyed on the bottom dress, black & gray & see-through argyle-patterned tights and keds with cheetah markings. I think mismatched patterns can work but this combo, not by a long shot.

Eek! It sounds like your description is a polite way of avoiding saying, “It made my eyeballs want to throw up!” ????

I found a sample of Kenzo Le Monde est Beau, which I think is discontinued, so that’s my SOTD. Quite nice, citrusy, herbal, reminds me a little of 4711, but has stuck around (quietly) all day. I don’t get the berries that reviews mention, but my sample is of the dab variety, so that might make the difference. I like it, but will not desperately hunt for a remaining bottle.
