Hmmm, was I one of the 28 sales of Absolue Pour le Soir last year? 🙂

He gave us the actual yearly sales figure! I can’t imagine Frederic Malle doing that with any of his perfumes!!!! I have AplS and now I feel as though I am a member of a secret society!

The interesting part of the interview for me was what he said about the new perfumers being pushed into the limelight and having to look good and put themselves out there….something very sad about that….. what if you just want to create and live behind the scenes? when I began my perfume obsession/adventures 45 years ago the “perfumer as celebrity” did not even exist…..it was all about the perfume…..

In some ways, it seems worse to me with the older perfumers. I don’t know if you saw the video I posted yesterday — Harry Fremont talking about Original Penguin Premium Blend — but all I could think of while watching it is that he could not possibly have planned on this when he started out in fragrance!

Oh, goodness! Just watched it! Agreed….the old timers probably never thought they would have to develop acting skills so late in life! He looked a tad bit uncomfortable in the end of the commercial!

Not only the acting skills, but just the idea that they have to participate in “selling” a fragrance they probably had little or no creative control over. It’s quite an ask.

Excellent point. I remember asking an experienced perfumer about this very thing. I think he brushed it aside as a non-issue. But he did also hint that many of his colleagues found the new requirements of their role quite tricky.
