The inventor of modern perfumery

Posted by Robin on 30 April 2016 7 Comments

A beautifully shot 5 minute tour through the life of François Coty, including some great vintage-perfume-bottle porn. For the bigger picture, read Perfume and Politics in the May 3, 1930 New Yorker.

Hi from Toronto, I sure hope you folks earn some decent money for your effort in keeping us appraised. I really appreciate your format, humour, and all that goes into this vein. cheers, sherry

So glad you like it! And depends on your definition of “decent” 😉

Can you imagine the smell in that rose filled room? And those Lalique bottles? Oh my! I have spent part of the week reading the Stamelman perfume book and came across the references to honeysuckle, which I found so interesting. Thanks so much for posting this! Wish I could make a time travel trip to Grasse and Paris ( as a wealthy person).

Oh, that’s a great book! I can’t remember what it says about honeysuckle.

Makes me sad to think how the mighty have fallen. Those bottles were gorgeous.

Thanks, Robin, for posting this terrific video which I watched with the sound off. The music was too harsh to match the theme. As for Stamelman, the photos are gorgeous but I found the writing frustrating because it kept me going around in circles. It was as if he had a thesaurus on his knee and came up with synonyms for words in sentences he’d already written, and kept saying the same thing over and over again.
