Posted by Robin on 19 January 2016 23 Comments

Atelier Cologne Collection Orient

Atelier Cologne will launch Collection Orient, with five fragrances: Philtre Ceylan, Poivre Electrique, Mimosa Indigo, Encens Jinhae and Tobacco Nuit.

As a result of numerous trips taken by the founders and Creators, Sylvie Ganter and Christophe Cervasel, to Asia and Middle East, they have created five new Colognes Absolue, all of which are a part of Atelier Cologne newest collection, Collection Orient inspired by the region’s natural beauty, people and customs, and particularly the most precious raw materials.

Philtre Ceylan ~ with bergamot, spearmint, cardamom, black tea, green tea, iris, cumin, gaiac wood and papyrus.

Poivre Electrique ~ with bitter orange, black pepper, pink pepper, incense, pimento leaf, rose, myrrh, sandalwood and cedar.

Mimosa Indigo ~ with mandarin, bergamot, saffron flower, indigo mimosa, white leather accord, lilac, sandalwood, vanilla and musk.

Encens Jinhae ~ with lemon, pink pepper, nutmeg, incense, cherry blossom, rose, sandalwood, patchouli and elemi.

Tobacco Nuit ~ with mandarin, coriander, cumin, tobacco flower, labdanum, frankincense, patchouli, cedar and tonka bean.

Atelier Cologne Philtre Ceylan, Poivre Electrique, Mimosa Indigo, Encens Jinhae and Tobacco Nuit will be available in 30, 100 and 200 ml Cologne Absolue.

It worries me when a house rolls out lots of releases in fairly rapid succession, as I begin to wonder if some of my older favorites are on the chopping block. Unfortunately, Atelier seems to be almost flooding the market with new releases. Perhaps I should grab bottles of what I like now before they get discontinued.

Agree. Too much, too fast. My local Neiman Marcus does not seem to mind giving them tons of counter space, so don’t know about discontinuations, but of course you never know.

Good grief, they’re cranking them out! I’m looking forward to the new bergamot, but these sound like they could be anything… Meh!

Also weird that four of the five refer to sort of raw materials, and “philtre” is just there on its own, unless it refers to some botanical I’m unaware of.

I think a new tag may need to be “Please, no more Atelier!”

I think the Ceylan is the material — Ceylon black tea.

And ha…I would, except that then I’d have to start one for so many brands! Atelier is not even the worst.

Would love to know what’s going on behind on the scenes on these–I share Joe and Absolute Scentualist’s surprise at the volume of new releases, wonder what the reasoning is.

I am assuming they’re all selling? I didn’t even try last year’s Azur collection, which was 4 scents, but they did a total of 8 scents last year and so I’m guessing they’re finding that works for them?

Oh funny, I was assuming it was a sign of distress, that they weren’t necessarily all selling, and instead trying to give many things a go to see what sticks. But then, I did not care for the Azur collection. (Does your Sephora have them? I can send samples if you need them. Or want them! 🙂 )

Well, launches do cost money, right? And stores won’t give you space if you don’t sell. So it’s not automatically a sign of success by any means but I assumed they were doing well, maybe more by the space at NM than by the sheer number of launches. Time will tell!

And gosh, HATE to sound like a picky snob when you’re making such a kind offer, but do you think I need to try them? I sort of assumed that I could safely skip them. Really I am not Atelier Cologne’s biggest fan, & have only liked a couple of them and even those are not “must tries” for me, much less “must buys”.

I got a sample of Mandarine Glacial (sp?) with a Sephora order and didn’t love it at all. The notes were too discordant and clashed on my skin so I gave it to my fourteen year old son who thought it smelled nice.

I own a few from Atelier and there are a couple more I’d like to acquire, so will get moving on it just in case. I really love Orange Sanguin, Rose Anonyme (one of the rare ouds I can actually stand), Vanille Incensee and still want to pick up the first tea scent and their grapefruit cologne as well.

But at this point I’m not even trying to keep up with their new releases. Too many perfumes, not enough time/arm real estate/room in the budget etc. 😉

No no, Robin, not snobbery at all–fact is, I was mainly offering in the interests of science (…rather than art??) My personal opinion is that none of the Azurs live up to the best of the original collection, and yet cost $15 more! (Or did–I see the price for the regular ones has increased $10 on the Sephora website.) I should say: one could do much worse! But for the money, one could also do much better. So yeah, only if you wanted them for reference!

And I used to really do my best to try everything in the name of science, LOL…but they have worn me down, I cannot try everything! And the more I try, the less I remember anyway, and then you have to store them all in a way you can find them later, ugh, I give up! So thank you but if you tell me they aren’t even as good as the first ones, I will take a rain check 🙂

I, too, am somewhat taken aback by the speed of new releases, but am somewhat relieved to see a few that don’t appear to be dominated by citrus. I feel that this house does quality work, but, unlike the Hermessences line, hasn’t really spread its wings to differentiate its offerings.

I was just thinking the same thing about the citrus! Though I am partial to Mandarine Glaciale, the rest of Atelier’s citruses that I’ve tried haven’t wowed me. I’ve been on a tea kick lately, so I would really like to try Philtre Ceylan and Oolang Infini.

Oolang Infini is really nice. A bit green, not too spicy but still enough tea to satisfy. A small bottle’s on my buy list, especially for spring and summer. It also doesn’t seem to be carried everywhere so I need to snap it up.

I love Atelier Cologne but they really are on a roll.
So many releases last year for their 5th birthday and now they announce a new collection with five fragrances!?
That would be 6 launched by them in 2016 and it’s only January!

Anyways I will be giving them a try as a fan. Mimosa and Tobacco sound like my thing.

I was going to post earlier about the overwhelming number of new releases but thought I was just being negative. I like to be able to sample a line in its entirety, assuming I have any interest in it at all, and this kind of rapid-fire launch strategy not only leaves me confused as to which scent is which, but also makes me question whether enough thought has been put into the formulas. I really like some of the Ateliers and even have a freakin’ huge bottle of one that I can spray with abandon, but I’m beginning to lose track of which ones I want to try.

Atelier Cologne sent an email yesterday that there will be a price increase effective Feb 1st. Special customers get an extra 2 weeks to enjoy the current price. I better get busy since I have gift cards to spend!

I smelled these at Bergdorf last week. The only one I i liked was the Philtre Ceylan (ha! despite my nemesis cumin!). I also smelled the new Bergamot but it was too in your face citrus. I got a sample of each and will hopefully get to wear them to decide if one or both are 30 mL worthy.
