Guerlain Ambre Eternel ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 13 January 2016 11 Comments

Guerlain Ambre Éternel

Guerlain has launched Ambre Éternel, a new limited distribution unisex fragrance. Ambre Éternel joins the Les Absolus d’Orient series as a sequel to 2014's Santal Royal, and like that fragrance was inspired by (and is geared towards) the Middle East.

Ambre Éternel is a woody oriental, and was developed by Guerlain house perfume Thierry Wasser. The notes reportedly include neroli, coriander, cinnamon, orange blossom, peach, ylang-ylang, woody notes, leather and amber.

Guerlain Ambre Éternel is available in 125 ml Eau de Parfum, AED 717 (about $200).

Agree. But all the same I have yet to smell a modern Guerlain I would pay that much for.

I find this interesting in a meta way. We have lots of people from the Middle East/Levant here in Portland, and they always smell of very chic, very crisp and expensive Western scent. I semi-dated an Egyptian doctor who wore the HELL out of Grey Vetiver and Drakkar Noir. I would think this would be more towards Westerners who would want an interpretation of a luxury Levant scent.

Maybe, but it is certainly available in more doors in the middle east than anywhere else, and the series has a dedicated website in Arabic that does not appear to have any English equivalent. So still guessing that the Middle East (and London) are where most of it is sold.

You know, was thinking about this more, and will just add that I don’t think that in any way invalidates your experience. Maybe it’s just geared towards a more traditional crowd, in the same way, obviously, that Guerlain does not really market Shalimar and La Petite Robe Noire to the same groups, even if there is crossover age-wise. Also true that these luxury scents geared towards the Middle East always seem to cluster in stores around Dubai, Saudi Arabia, etc, and then in Harrods — areas where people are spending the big money.

Oh no, I didn’t think that invalidated my experience at all. If anything that added nuance. If you are from the Middle East/ Levant and have the ability to ACTIVELY choose to live here, then a grooming choice would be probably something more Western and not traditional at all.

And that is a big point with WHERE the fragrances are actively marketed and sold.

I’m not a bottle whore, and I need another amber like I need a hole in the head, but…I would love to see that bottle on my dresser. (I keep my perfumes in a drawer, away from heat and light. I’d make an exception for this one.)

I bought this one blind, and luckily it’s a winner for me! Ambre Éternel smells dusty-powdery, with an inviting and plush like sweetnes laying on a base of woody accents. There is also a certain spiciness to it. Surprisingly, it seems to be quite heavy on orris, which creates the powdery feeling. Combined with the spicy and sweet notes, Ambre Éternel does remind me of the famous Dior Homme accord, but I might me in a minority here, as other people I talked to can’t find any similarities between these two, and would rather describe it as smoky and resinous.
