Thursday scent of the day 12/31

Posted by Robin on 31 December 2015 194 Comments

tobacco leaf vases

Happy New Year's Eve! Drive safely, everyone. What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

The weather here isn't really cold enough for it, but I'm wearing a tiny dab of Donna Karan Black Cashmere.

Reminder: tomorrow we're celebrating the New Year...wear the perfume that will bring you luck, health and prosperity in 2016. And don't forget, the damage poll is coming up next Tuesday!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: tobacco leaf vases from Haiti are available in a number of styles and prices on Donna Karan's Urban Zen website, and proceeds help to support the Haiti Artisan Project.

Prada Infusion d’Iris absolue, day two! It’s a warming fragrance for a cold day.

For fun today I may make a list of the Best of 2015 perfumes from various blogs. I’m curious to see which perfumes get the most mentions, but also I want to create a list of things I meant to sample.

Happy new year to you and your families and friends and pets!

I spent some time on Surrender to Chance this morning ordering samples of some of the recs that I hadn’t tried yet (which would be most 2015 releases). Haven’t been able to find samples of Orlov Cross of Asia yet, which is on more than one list.

Making a master list is a fantastic idea! I’m sure there are perfumes from the 2014 lists that I’ve forgotten to try, not to mention prior years.

It’s going to be fun to see what kind of consensus there will be and then try to narrow down the list to things I might actually like! Even if a perfume is only mentioned once or twice, it may be a reminder of one I was interested in and promptly forgot about.

Am having fun creating such a master list as well! I love lists and crossing things off 🙂 So far it looks like Iris Cendre, Pichola, Bergamoss and Alaia are getting a lot of mentions.

I’ve made a virtual list too, I came to the same conclusion, adding Narciso, which could be a 2014, and Bulgari thé bleu.. in a last sprint I’ m testing most of them, have to order a Pichola sample however. Winners for the moment are Narciso and iris cendré. HAPPY 2016 EVERYONE 🙂

Those tobacco leaf vases are beautiful.

Wearing Vanilla Smoke, which I love. FutureMrEleebelle can’t stand it, but fortunately, I think it will wear off before I’m home from work, at which point, I’ll put on something more festive (even though I plan to spend the night being cozy at home, instead of going out).

    Happy New Years everyone!!!

I love vanilla in all shapes and sizes, but Vanilla Smoke isn’t sweet, so I think it would be appealing to people who don’t usually like vanilla. Plus, the lapsang souchong note…. yum!

    Happy New Years everyone!

Wearing Oeillet Bengale today. Love the spice in this one.

We were invited to a party tonight – but I think we’re staying home to watch football. Beginning of what our weekend will likely look like… sitting on the couch with football on and me potentially binge-watching something on Netflix or Amazon. Or playing with my coloring book.

Hope everyone has a wonderful evening!

Coloring books are so IT for those of us past the fruitchouli (caught the spell check error in time – dear Siri – What in the world is “fruit housing”?, but I digress) target market! Barnes and Noble’s prime space at the entrance holds stacks of coloring books!!Even the airport bookstores have them. I mentioned to the B&N SA several weeks ago that they should display colored pencils right next to the coloring books and his response was the colored pencils keep selling out. Ummm really? I saw loads of them innate children’s section. Have a happy New Year!

My daughter gave me a colouring book for Xmas – curious role reversion. It was sweet of her and I think she thinks I was interested in them because she had seen me browsing them several times at the shops. In fact I was curious about the colouring phenomenon, not necessarily wanting one myself.

But having acquired one, I have had to borrow my kids colouring pencils! Do I have any colouring pencils? Of course not. 🙂

I have a coloring book of paisleys. It was pleasant, but with the spaces so tiny it was tough to keep the pencil points sharp enough to stay within them. The points kept breaking off when sharpened. Also hard on the eyes after a while. Old age, I know. 🙂

I’ve had solids of L’Ombre and Philosykos. They don’t project much but the portability is nice and those heavy little compacts do feel nice as well. I think the oil rollerball has more oomph from what I can recall.

Not sure what I’ll wear later, but right now I’m wearing my last blind buy of 2015, FL Parfums Don d’Amour. I had been coming across articles about this line for a while, and finally decided to try one of them. They also sent me several samples, which I’ll be testing over the next few days, but I’m very happy with Don d’Amour. To me it’s a rose-citrus-ambergris scent that reminds me slightly of the style of Aftelier, with a floating quality, reminiscent of the also music-inspired Ys-Uzac. Very nice!

Here’s the NYT article about conductor Fabio Luisi and his perfumes:

I had to leave the house far too early this morning to have a few items taken care of before starting my new job on Monday, but the good news is that don’t have tuberculosis. Yeehaw!

Couldn’t quite decide what to start the day with, but ended up with L’ambre de Merveilles on my scarf, and I love its warmth and (to my mind) optimism. Feels like a good tone to set for the year.

Back on the subway to head home – will check in later. Happy New Year!!

I shouldn’t post before I have the proper amount of caffeine! I never thought I had TB, and I’m sorry that my tone wasn’t clear. I was sleepy and trying to be playful but maybe I should have included a winking emoji.

I’m going to be working in fundraising for a hospital system, and even though I won’t be working with patients, a lot of tests were required before I could start in my new position, and the most demanding of these time-wise was the tuberculosis test. This morning I was making my fourth trip back and forth to the workplace heath and safety office (an hour and a half to two hours each way) just for these prick tests and the follow up for each one. So I was trying to joke about being relieved about not having an illness I knew I didn’t have, buuuuut I failed. Sorry!

Wishing you coziness and health in the new year too!

Lol, is it bad that I find this strangely reassuring? I still feel angry for the time the French government made me get naked in front of their immigration officials, for a chest x-ray to prove I didn’t have TB. Somehow I feel better to hear mandatory TB testing is not a totally unknown practice??

            31 December 2015 at 12:05 pm

Yikes – I am so sorry you had to go through that!

My TB tests were simple skin pricks, and I was just annoyed for having to travel a total of three hours for each one and for each follow up, but I’ll take it if nudity is my other option.

          • Mariann says:
            31 December 2015 at 12:38 pm

Ah yes the French made me do that too (though we did have a gown thingy) even though I had my vaccination pass and all documentation. But as Switzerlands not in the EU I guess that was their way of disapproval.

That happened to me as well, and my bank was absolutely marvelous. Helpful, reassuring, and quick to issue a new card. If I remember right, they notified me that some questionable purchases had been made. Grit your teeth, stay calm, and have a great new year.

Happy New Year to all! I’m at work for a partial day today, and wearing Eau de The Vert for the day. It should wear off by evening, which is good because I’m hosting a small gathering, and want to wear something else. Most likely OJ Woman.

I’m stacking soft, dusty Cuir d’Ange with Poivre Samarcande to give it some bite. I find PS really boring on its own, but it layers well with just about all the other Hermessences.

Had to take my cat to the vet this morning for his annual checkup, so no SOTD yet. I am getting occasional faint whiffs of the Coco soap I used in the shower this morning. It isn’t just like the liquid form, but nice nonetheless. It was a treat for myself during a really rough time last fall and I’m glad I finally opened it.

It’s luxury and a cheap thrill at the same time. $25, but it will last over a month. I’m getting a good amount of happiness for less than a dollar a day.

Happy New Year’s Eve to everyone and wishing everyone a healthy, easy year! We’re out on Long Island at a hotel with our kitties in tow while some issues with our apt get fixed. This has taken up a frustrating part of my last 2 weeks. Nice to be away from the city, though, and the kitts are tolerating the change-up better than expected(no hissing or growling). Our low key New Years plans will be din din and a movie-wanting to see Anomalisa.
SOTD is from my purse emergency sample stash: Perris Monte Carlo Essence de Patchouli. Cozy and powdery.

Has anyone heard of a perfume website called Parfumaria? I think it is based in Italy. They have a frag I want a bit cheaper than I can buy it here even with shipping added… still hesitant though. The only perfumes that I purchased internationally where directly from the perfumer’s websites.

Happy New Year! Tonight will be the first time both kiddos stay up till midnight so I am trying to think of some fun things to make for a special dinner. So far… Not much is coming to mind that they actually like! Ha!
SOTM is vintage Chanel 19 EDT. Last year, I was completely obsessed with this but now… Not so much. Still, it is lovely. I was inspired by a trip to Lush to make giant lavender and coconut oil bath bombs, so after “testing” those, I will switch to something else. Maybe some old Fendi; I like the idea of wearing something old today and something new tomorrow!
I hope you all have a fabulous evening; I know you will all smell divine!

Oh I apologize, excellent question! Yes: as Karen and Mals say, it’s Surrender to Chance, which offers samples and larger decants of most everything under the sun. It’s awesome if you don’t have access to test something that interests you, or if you’d like to have a bit of something but not a whole bottle. (Like for instance if you’d like $20 worth of Vanille 44, rather than $400 🙂 ) It’s especially great if you’re in the US as domestic shipping is only $3–I can’t speak to how it works out in other countries, I’m afraid.

Today’s sale items can be found under “Weekly Chance Specials” on their website, and if it sounds like it might be your thing, do sign up for their newsletter–they often send discount codes. Hope that helps!

Actually, this is an especially fun question because it makes me think just how many of my bottles are loves discovered through STC samples. En Passant, Musc Ravageur, Costes, Jasmin et Cigarette, Honore des Pres Sexy Angelic, and…a number of L’Artisans I’m not going to name here because I’m getting embarrassed at what this indicates about the excesses of my collection 🙂

So haha yeah maybe be careful with Surrender to Chance, I am a cautionary tale 😉

Happiest and most blessed of New Years to you all! Mine has dawned slightly stormy– and that had better not be an omen of times to come!– and we’re both short of sleep because the city went crazy last night. For hours and hours. Did those happy shrieking young people not realise that I Wanted To Sleep? Oh, how old and staid I am. And grumpy! No matter: fun lies ahead. I am about to go to my niece’s house, there to celebrate the 14th birthday of my great niece, who is totally girly, made up of sweet and wicked in equal proportions. After a lot of wondering, I’m giving her a bottle of Noa, which hope will be feminine enough for her disposition but so lacking skank that even her protective daddy and big brothers (literally “big”–they go on forever, like mountains) could not get worried. We’ll all talk in about five conversations at once and eat far too much and could there be a better way to begin 2016? Be safe and well,NST.

Noa is a wonderful choice for her. Perfect really. It’s a lovely perfume. Pretty, not too strong, not dirty yet not too clean, and not a fruity mess. I’ve always wanted a bottle but never had one. I think she’ll love it.
Our new year has yet to come. Trying to figure out what to make for supper since our party we were supposed to go to is cancelled last minute. I wish you all the best in the New Year Waterdragon. I always enjoy your comments. Have fun at the party!

    Happy New Year Everyone!

This morning’s were lightish considering the party we’re going to later. We visited Caixa Forum with its interesting architecture, vertical garden and women in art exhibit. We also toured highlights of the Prado Museum with a fabulous guide; too bad the museum closed at 2PM. It meant that I was able to meander around and I checked out perfume places – nothing special — a Sephora, a pharmacy that sold its own numbered fragrances (no test strips – ugh), a tiny women’s fashion boutique that carried its own line of candles, perfumes and home sprays (I didn’t get the name of the store as it did not wow me), Jutego (Sephora-like) and Perfumerias Padilla (like the mall stores/kiosks that sell a mishmash of perfumes). At Sephora, I saw YSL Body Kouros and asked for a sample. The SA was very gracious and handed me a 1.5 mL vial (the kind with a lip so the opening was tinier than the typical vials) and told me to fill it myself because the last time he did it, the perfume went all over his hands and it took days to wash it off. Anyway, I asked for some tissues, aimed the nozzle and voila, just a little spray outside of the vial and the rest landed in the vial – the SA was quite impressed.

    SOTD = Chanel No. 19
SOTE will be Aftelier Bergamoss EDP. Last night, my 5 sprays of No. 5 EDT (from a twist up travel spray) lasted less than an hour!

Happy new Year…what a great sunny morning here. Within an hour of waking I broke one of my half hearted resolutions: not to blind buy perfume in 2016… Just ordered Ostara. I have therefore decided that NY resolutions don’t kick in until noon. It is my son’s 14th birthday today. He was born in Germany at 9 seconds past midnight…the first Wurzburg baby of 2002 . I have a terrible scent memory of labour. There was a midwife who must have been a chain smoker who tried to hide the fact by chewing mint gum… Her breath was smoky, sickly sweet mint and she kept talking at me….atomlos (something about breathlessness). It was so cold that the windows cracked in the night. In the courtyard was a Christmas tree with footsteps in the snow leading to and away from it like spokes on a wheel. My first post birth hospital meal was a boiled ham hock with gherkins…another scent memory.

You too! I was keeping in mind your post about adopting the word ‘enjoy’ as a touchstone for the year and decided that mine should be ‘open’, as in open to new ideas and adventures…turns out I’m not that open to resolutions, though.

I think I want to adopt that as my mantra for 2016 – being an anxious sort I would like to learn to just relax and enjoy life.

Happy New Year everyone! Well, we were supposed to be going out early tonight but we just got the call from Hubband’s brother that it’s cancelled. It seems that my sister-in-law’s grandmother is actively dying. She had been sick before Christmas but bounced back. This time they think that it’s the beginning of the end. So no New Year’s party at their house tonight. I’m okay with a quiet evening at home but I hadn’t planned on making supper so now I’m trying to figure out plan B. do I go back to the grocery store for something to cook or do we just grab a quick bite somewhere?
I have no perfume on yet and now that our plans have changed I’m not sure what to ring in the New Year with. I’ll be fast asleep long before midnight anyway. I’m thinking it might be a Rubj kind of evening.

Happy New year 2016everyone! I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather today, and in my pyjama’s now at 7.30pm, just put the little ones to bed, and can’t see myself staying up much longer. Still, i’m really looking forward to watching the fourth instalment of Dickensian on BBC1 later, it’s a fantastic drama, so much better than the watery pastiche i thought it would be.
Wearing Epic again, it seems to be slowly growing on me, especially when i can smell the rose in it, which comes and goes. We have a long time to become better aquainted, as i received the gorgeous green 100ml bottle for christmas. I can’t believe the lasting power and silage are so poor on me tho, as Jubilation 25 lasts all day.

I got a wonderful trove of samples yesterday from an NST pen pal so I’m trying Naomi Goodsir Iris Cendre. Wowee. This may be up with Mythique and Le Labo Iris in my book. Smoky and oily and weird. I think I love it, though I just dabbed a tiny bit on.
Don’t know what I will wear for luck in the new year. My guess is something green, like the Southern US tradition of having greens on Jan 1 for wealth and luck in the new year.
Also, officially one-crutching it all over town, which is painful, but feels like progress after a month of two.

As opposed to the tradition (Scandanavian?) of eating creamed herring. Clearly my husband is desperate for prosperity. Me, not so much.

No skiing for me today after spending last night into the wee hours at the animal ER with my dog. Preliminary diagnosis is gastroenteritis, but if he isn’t feeling better by this evening an ultrasound is the next step. I have that disoriented, vaguely nauseated feeling that comes with too little sleep but I need to keep an eye on the poor boy, he looks worse than I feel. I’m wearing a tiny bit of Black Cashmere.

Sorry to hear your pup is under the weather. It sometimes takes a few days to get back on track with that. Rest and bland diet. Hope he feels better soon.

So sorry to hear this – did they give you some metrodinazole for him? That often helps. Sending healing vibes for your boy.

I just got back from having my car’s window fixed. I had to get the window motor replaced. Oh, for the days of the crank car window. While I was waiting for my appointment I popped into T. J. Maxx to look at purses and of course, their fragrances. They have a better choice than either of their sister stores, Ross and Marshall’s. I picked up an Omnia Coral, but I may take it back, because I can get it online cheaper. Anyway, the gist of all this is that by coincidence they had one bottle of Fan di Fendi which is my SOTD, and of which I had just purchased a mini, which I had received last week. My mini cost more, which is just irritating.

Happy new year to my fellow NST’ers! I put on some Feminité du Bois but it’s all burned off, I am going to switch to Fate for this evening after I get through a massive pile of dishes.
