Tuesday scent of the day 12/15

Posted by Robin on 15 December 2015 233 Comments

Star Wars fondant cup cake toppers

Happy National Cupcake Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Prada Candy.

Reminder: this Friday, 12/18, we're doing Best Buy Friday: wear your favorite fragrance purchase of 2015. If you didn't buy anything this year, pick a favorite from a prior year.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown are Star Wars fondant cup cake toppers, $24 for 12 at TheConfectionary at Etsy.

Those cupcakes are adorable. Almost too cute to eat!
Have you ever heard of the term, “when it rains it pours?” Yesterday I was home sick, and when I came into the bedroom one of our kitties had peed all over the bed. To make a long story short she is now at the home of our vet, and him and his partner are making her comfortable. Yesterday I spent most of the day crying and eating chocolate.
Still sporting this cold, so I am commando again today.
However I can smell the faint scents in my face wash, Jasmine, white tea and musk.

She has kidney failure, our vet was very honest and told she would probably be gone in the next few weeks. So they are making her comfortable until she passes and we have given them a generous donation to their animal sanctuary for doing that. But, anything can happen. She could get better also!

Oh no what terrible news! I’m so sorry! It must surely also be upsetting that your little fur-girl isnt with her ‘family’ at such a distressing time for her. I hope she feels safe and cared for at her hospice.

      Rose Jam, Day 2.
Enjoying the day off… did some gift wrapping, online shopping and off to an annual Christmas choral program in the city later this evening.
Something peculiar happens to the clock on days off. The time either speeds up or skips every other hour or I don’t know what, but its not fair and how can it be afternoon already!

Going to apply more Rose Jam lotion 🙂

Today I’m wearing the EDP. I’ve got bottles of both. I think a lot of people bought this one unsniffed and regretted it. There were a lot of bottles available on ebay quite shortly after it first came out.
        So I lucked out.
The EDP is slightly more full bodied than the EDT but the 2 are not hugely different.

Thanks, I’m pretty happy with the EDT and glad to hear the EDP isn’t vastly superior. Maybe if I ever run out (highly unlikely considering the volume of perfume I now own) I will replace my bottle with the EDP.

I can’t make this Goutal work for me. I have a small decant and I retest it from time to time. I don’t know which version it is – edt or edp. But sometimes it has too much dirt scratchin patchouli for me, and other times I think it is a more daring version of Chanel Coromandel….The deep red bottle is gorgeous though!

It’s not jasmine-y on me at all: mostly a great swirling cloud of smoky tarry woody spice. I have one of the first bottles he released: maybe a reformation amps up the jasmine? Or maybe it’s just me.

Mine is from about 3 years ago. But I wouldn’t say the jasmine is strong in it – just significant to my enjoyment of it. And I do think my skin is somehow amping the note up -my husband doesn’t get as much of it when he wears it.

I get that jasmine aspect as well but it is a very green and spring like jasmine to my nose, not indolic at all. A kinder, gentler jasmine….

It’s very polished but has enough dirty bits to give it an earthy quality. I find it very beautiful but not particularly comforting, which may be why I don’t reach for it often. Definitely worth sampling.

I have the day off, but feel like I’m wasting it, since I have to bring my car in for body work estimates. A truck driver hit it on Friday while making a delivery to the shelter I work at, and if it were not for a good samaritan who witnessed everything and wrote me a note, I wouldn’t have known who was responsible. When I confronted the driver (who was still unloading), he initially denied knowing anything about my car. Thank god for good witnesses who are willing to step forward! Commando right now, but Chene for later.

I am having a very lazy morning. This afternoon I have to go to my sons school and do his IEP. Not wearing anything at the moment, but I just received the Jhag sample set from Sephora. I plan on picking something from that after I shower. Any suggestions from those who know the line?

Wearing Taylor Swift’s Incredible Things today. It’s nice! The first 30 minutes was a little too loud, but it’s settled into a nice, sweet, gentle scent. Me likey!

On hold with Sephora right now….(21 minutes and holding)…..I got an order yesterday, and they left my 3 free fragrance samples out! BOO HOO! LOL I had ordered La Panthere, Daisy, and Dior Sauvage. Bummed I won’t get ’em, but they’ll give me some VIB points back, I understand…..23 minutes now….LOL

    Have a good day y’all! 🙂

Rogue is available in one of their sample sizes. Their samples are called imps, and are $4 each. I love them, because I can try a variety of scents and since they are perfume oils, the amount is enough for several applications.

    I love those cupcakes!

I’m giving Chinatown a full run today. When I put it on this morning I didn’t notice as much of the old lady whiff that I got before. So far, so good.

I found an old spray sample of Chanel No 5 and tried it on at bedtime last night. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it, since No 5 and I don’t always see eye to eye (old lady perfume issues). This morning I took a better look at the sample and found out it was No 5 Eau de Premiere, which I’ve heard quite a bit about. It is truly delightful. I think it might be my new bedtime fragrance. It’s comforting and lovely without being overwhelming.

In some ways I wish I was younger, but not really. I like the wisdom that comes with age. But I’m not that young.

It’s not an age problem, as far as I know. There’s just certain notes in certain fragrances, that smell to me like perfume that’s been kept too long. My grandmother used to have a couple of ancient bottles of perfume in her bathroom, and they smelled like that. Likewise for my adopted Gramma later in life. That’s probably why I identify it as an old lady smell. I catch a whiff of that scent, whatever it is, and I’m immediately standing in my grandmother’s bathroom again.

Chilly here in the SF Bay Area today, near freezing this morning. Fortunately, I have my hot flashes to keep me warm. Seriously, I put on a warm sweater then had to go change to something lighter before I passed out from heat stroke. Bah humbug.

SOTD is Tom Ford Oud Wood, for its calming properties. Ommmm

Yesterday I finally tried my recent purchase of SSS Amber Incense. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all, so it took a while to re-align my nose and try it with a mental blank state. What surprised me was that this scent is all about the spices! Way more spice than amber or incense. Interesting.

Also repeating a question I asked over the weekend: I was gifted a vintage bottle of Chanel No 5 EdP, and I’m wondering what the vintage is. The bottle is sort of a hip flask shape: it’s a black refillable plastic case, about 6″ tall, 2.5″ wide, and about 3/4″ deep. There’s a gold band just over halfway up the bottle and the cap is above the gold band. Anyone remember when this bottle shape was used?

I got a package last night of some fun samples from an extremely generous NSTer, including a perfume oil that is totally new to me: Terveer. Anyone heard of it or tried it? I am sampling the Incense, which is a little narcotic–it must be the oud. Ihadanidea was supposed to send me a decant of Calligraphy Rose, which she did…but with so many other fun items to explore, I had a wee spell of ADD and wound up gleefully overapplying this addictive oil!

Also, thanks to galbanumgal, I am jittery from the too many Violet Bakery Rye Brownies I had for breakfast (Ya, I know, breakfast of fat champions!)… Tried the recipe last night and it is definitely for the dark chocolate lovers…they were even better this morning after a night in the fridge–perfect level of chewiness!

My 14 year old has a finals study day break today, and tomorrow is his physics final… I am trying not to be too obvious about the fact I haven’t a clue about what he studying. It is a fine line I am walking of proffering brownies and encouragement, and making what I hope are intelligent nods at his explanations of what he is working on….

Brownies, mmm… I’ve been finishing up my graham date bread and wondering what would be the next thing to widen my hips. I’m craving these: http://buttermeupbrooklyn.com/2013/07/red-wine-velvet-cupcakes/
which are a favorite for chocolate cravings (only with regular cream cheese icing), but those brownies may win.

Just seeing this now – yaaaaaaaay!!

I had never heard of it either, but it somehow seemed like something you’d enjoy. It was in my Sniffapalooza bag, and I don’t remember hearing the background on it.

      Off to spray some Silences…:)

Greetings everyone! I’m reaching far into the back of the drawer to keep myself entertained and out of a fragrance rut. Today’s fragrance is Chopard Casmir. Robin’s review of whatever it was the other day about “happy” fragrances got me to thinking about what was really happy in my collection, and Casmir came to mind. It’s just almost too sweet for me, but it is very sunny!

I’ve been trying to buy this one since I read Angela’s review a while back, but I never seem to be slick enough on my feet to catch up with it. It sounds heavenly for high days and holidays.

Good morning, all. Today is a soft day in the office (which means I’m skiving off early to gave lunch with a desperately sick colleague). I finished the beastly report thing yesterday afternoon and despatched it. Oh, the satisfaction of hitting “Send”! Went upstairs to check my pigeon hole and found that a staff member (used to be one of mine, but I sort of off-loaded her a couple of years back for Reasons) has made a formal complaint about me. Super. That’ll be something to help me pass the time in the New Year, I expect. Nobody seems very certain what the complaint is about, but everyone agrees that this young woman is very upset with me. It will be very interesting to find out what I’ve done that’s so bad, because I’m always absolutely painstakingly polite to her when I have to interact with her. Anyway, what perfume do you wear when all this is going down? Dunno, really. Fate, for its name? 19, for its warrior woman qualities? 24 Rue Faubourg for its gorgeous dignity? Nah. I really want something that expresses bemusement and slightly hysterical laughter–why doesn’t some clever perfumer get right on that project? Anyway, I’ve settled, with no extraordinary sense of irony, for Kiss Me Tender.

I used to have to deal with complaints, not about me personally, but rather against those above me and a process that I managed. Worst part of the job, by far. It was invariably the least talented employees with terrible interpersonal skills and no self-awareness who complained. However, their direct supervisors never had the balls to document the issues and dealt with it (if they did anything), by passing them off on other departments. I didn’t entirely blame them, as that was a time-consuming and thankless task with these difficult employees; however, as a result, there was never inadequate documentation of their poor performance, which was a handicap in dealing with the complaints. I would wonder how the new supervisor has been treating and advising this employee.

I hope your organization has good lawyers dealing with personnel matters. If so, they can be invaluable. The first step (after finding out what the complaint is and looking up the relevant regulations or policies) is to outline and document all of the facts. Getting all that together and organized was a pain but always helped me feel better prepared.

Thank you. Your advice about being prepared is excellent and I will act on it when I begin to deal with the issue. I shouldn’t think the Uni has employment lawyers, but it’s bound to have enough policies and procedures to keep me wrapped warmly in red tape until I retire. But, to be honest, I can’t get very worked up about the complaint, or not yet, anyway. I probably will soon, but this year has been tough– full of deaths and other forms of loss, the extreme illness of valued colleagues, including a severe head injury with lasting horrible effects to one of my oldest friends and work mates, my own relatively minor but distracting health issues–and this complaint, whatever it’s about, somehow just doesn’t stack up very high on my emotional priority list, or even on my task list. It’s Wednesday: tomorrow is graduation and between the procession and the ceremony, nothing much else will happen, so effectively I have only two days left of this academic year and I intend to enjoy them. I’m not going to let matter this spoil my break: I’m not taking it up home with me where the air is clean and the people love me. Next year will be soon enough.

Good luck Waterdragon. It usually becomes clear to HR pretty quickly when they are dealing with someone who is simply spiteful and emotionally immature and/or passive aggressive…no doubt the complainer will try everyone’s patience and then shoot herself in the foot (but make people miserable in the process). I think you should wear ‘Waterdragon has a Gun’ or Bulletproof…or Everything and Nothing….What a waste of your time having to deal with such nonsense.

Waterdragon has a gun…love it! Something based on the smell of firecrackers, do you think? A touch of oud and suedey leather in the heart, top notes with lots of animalic leather and a whiff of brimstone, lit up with some metallic aldehydes? That should scare everyone around me. I’ve often thought how useful a tail would be for expressing emotion –the cats are so good with their nonverbal signals–but now what I chiefly want is a luxuriant moustache so I could twirl the end in a villainous way.

That sounds rather horrible. It’s never happened to me, but a former colleague had a miserable time with a complainer – this person wasn’t up to the job and every time my colleague tried to deal with performance issues, the person rushed to the HR dept to complain about bullying. HR knew exactly what was going on, but still had to investigate.

Love that you’ve gone for Kiss Me Tender 🙂

I have heard that this person tends to rush off to HR quite a lot, but I don’t have any real data about that. I do know that she has made one other formal compliant before, not bad going for someone who joined the organisation as recently as 2011! I have never felt any respect for her, and actually not too much liking either, but if I’ve done done thing terrible to her (????), she’s entitled to invoke the process.

I needed cozy and I got cozy. Just heard that a colleague’s 6 year old daughter passed away over the weekend from a rare organic disorder which was not diagnosed. How can a parent deal with something like this? She used to sit in front of me and I heard how she was with her kids. So sad…

Shalimar PI, as I’ve been going through a little box of recent swapped samples and decants that I put within easy reach post leg break–to force me to try things?
But, now I remember that this makes me sneeze almost instantly, like a magic trick. I do like the spicy, vaguely iris effects, so I might try a little in my lampe berger trick before trying to re-home it.

SotD is DKNY Sweet Delicious Tart Key Lime — very lime, a bit sweet, sort of delicious. I like it much better than I expected. The initial burst of lime is fabulous. There is something odd in it now though. Hairspray?

I spritzed Tart Key Lime while standing in a check-out line after shopping today and not finding what I was looking for. Bought six shirts for gifts, so it wasn’t a total loss.

Commando except for overspray from spritzing No. 19 on sweaters I took out of storage.

Think I may puruse some local antique shops for a small cabinet for my perfumes. Hauling out a cardboard box in our temporary housing arrangement is getting old. Merry Christmas to me!
