Happy Thanksgiving 2015 ~ open thread

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who is celebrating today! Today also marks the birthday of Charles Schulz, who passed away in 2000.

Whether you’re celebrating (either event) or not, feel free to talk about anything you like: what fragrance you’re wearing today, what you're especially thankful for this year, what you’re going to cook or eat today...whatever you like, so long as it doesn’t conflict with our comment policy.

I just received word that there has been a death in the family, so Thankgiving is cancelled. This is our second death on Thanksgiving. Sometimes, I really hate November.

      So, so sorry!
Loss is hard any time, but to have it on a holiday can make it so difficult to “reset” in years to come! Take care of yourself and your loved ones in any ways that seem appropriate in the days to come!

Wishing y’all a happy and blessed Thanksgiving! I’m lying in bed, still very much drenched in Reverie ah Jardin from last night. Not sure what I’ll go with post shower but for now I’m just enjoying the sweet, sweet comfort of Reverie. Heavenly.

      A few thoughts post shower.

Pacifica’s sandalwood soap smells more like froot loops and laundry than sandalwood. I’m very disappointed. L’Occitane used to sell a wonderful sandalwood soap in their men’s line but sadly, it’s been discontinued. Any recommendations for a good sandalwood soap?

PSA, Jcrew Arquiste no. 31 can be had for a mere twenty dollars right now (50 ml size). What a steal!

Finally, I went with Arquiste Alexandr as my SOTD. I may have over applied. Curse widemouth sample vials!

That soap is great and certainly doesn’t smell like Fruit Loops. And it’s cheaper than cheap! The only downside to it is I find it leaves a waxy, oily residue in the shower.

Just another very warm, summery day here. The long days of beaches and bbqs and outdoor movies and concerts (and wilting heat and flies and mozzies!) are here again 🙂
Wore Guerlain Terracotta (new one) today, and topped it up with Cristalle au verte tonight. The warm white flower drydown and citrussy au verte go well together.

Happy Thanksgiving to those of you who celebrate it! I’m thinking I’ll go with Chanel Cuir de Russie today. After a tumultuous beginning with it, I officially LOVE it. I’m new to leather, and CdR feels like a sexy choice for a Thanksgiving hostess. Or should I go with Cuir de Lancome? What would you do for your leather debut?

Gosh, this seems like such a personal question! 😉

I don’t own any, but there are leathers that are so pronounced, it’s almost like chewing on rawhide. The leather note in DSH Cuir et Champinon has some of that feel to me. And my notes on Habinita say “leather, amber and rubber” which seems to fit the bill, but I don’t honestly recall it! And Cuir Ottoman seems like a hard leather rather than smooth suede. I’d bet others could come up with more examples!

Ha fun question! Bandit’s probably the benchmark for this, I think! Tabac Blond maybe? Ooh, you know, I think that’s what I’ll wear today. Fun times, thanks for the prompt!

And I’ll be thankful, to say the very least, to the NSTer who gave me a sample of vintage parfum!!

          • C.H. says:
            26 November 2015 at 12:17 pm

If you need encouragement, vintage samples are the one variety of sample purchase I never end up regretting–overall I’ve cut back on my sample purchasing because the success rate is just too low to justify the cost, but with something like Bandit, I’m always glad for the experience, even if it’s not something I want to wear all the time.

I am enjoying a quiet breakfast this morning–many hours before meeting up with the (painfully awkward but loveable) family. I like taking care of myself really concientiously before a big holiday–so this morning it will be a healthy and hearty breakfast (eggs, summer squash, homemade bread toast, and grapefruit) and perhaps a walk or run before I have to be festive.

Wish you all well today! Sending out my gratitude for this supportive (and enabling) community!

You’re really right, it is better than the first one!! For one thing, now that it’s the travel sprays, you can easily replace any that you finish off–and while not cheap by any means, $560 for 200ml of perfume is a much better price per ml than $320 for 90ml ($2.80 versus $3.55).

Hmmmmmm now I wish I had properly identified an evil scent twin, so I’d have someone to split this with 🙂

It certainly is a lot all at once. If it’s any consolation, it comes out to about $28 per spray, whereas if you buy them individually, they’re $46-$74 each…

I know, it is a big chunk of money. Where are you located? For U.S. shoppers, this would be a pretty ideal perfume mule opportunity–I just saved fully $70 (35%) off the U.S. price, after taxes, of a 50ml Musc Ravageur bottle, by having someone bring it back from the EU. And a purchase as large at the coffret might qualify for the detaxe program, so a determined person might save another 15 or 20%… Ha, all you have to do is buy a plane ticket to France 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends!

I’m in the remnants of last night’s Mohur. I love me some spicy roses. I have this and Une Rose de Kandahar, both of which I find absolutely lovely but would like to try more. Can anyone recommend some other spicy rose beauties?

      Yay for spicy roses!
I have PHI in my collection, which has that tobacco/fruit thing going on as a part of it. I don’t have Mohur, but I think I remember it being a bit fruited, too, yes?
The other spicy and/or “dark” or “deep” roses I have include:
Amouage Lyric–freakishly gorgous, full-bodied, and always gets compliments.
OJ Ta’if–a greener version of spicy rose. Somehow “fresh” without giving up on body and complexity.
Une Rose Chypree–which perhaps you’ve already tried and turned down, if you’ve got PHI? It is an odd duck, but I love it–it starts out almost astringent and then melds into the creamiest thing in the world. Rose with vegetal pudding.
Le Labo Rose–another weird one with biting pepper in the top notes (not as wearable as the others, IMO, but fascinating).
I’ve sampled many others that I found beautiful in parts, but not enough to own. I could probably track down the sampling list for you, if others don’t provide enough suggestions. 😉

        Thank you Marjorie Rose!
I really need to venture forth to Amouage…the only one I’ve tried was Homage that I’m still kicking myself for not buying when it was still available!
It was a toss-up between Kandahar and Rose Chypre…I took the bait and went with the limited RdK but do love both.
I think I have a sample of Ta’if floating around so will def track that down.
        Thanks again!

I have great respect for the Amouage line. Nearly all of them are beautifully blended and clearly made of quality ingredients, which helps me to excuse the price. (I’ve also found deeply discounted bottles of a couple of my faves on Fragrancenet, which helps!) I almost recommended Memoir to you as well, but it’s not really a rose (although I think there’s rose in there). It’s like leather, spicecake and a good merlot with a bouquet of flowers.

Cosign MR’s suggestions, most particularly Rose 31 which is a particular favorite of mine. I’d also add Different Company Rose Poivree, and then I think Rosine has some options as well…

One of my favorites is ELDO Rossy de Palma, which is kind of weird and unusual (like its namesake)but fits the spicy rose bill. It’s peppery and gingery with a slightly metallic edge. It wasn’t love-at-first-sniff but now I craaaave it!

No cekebration here either –but happiest of holidays to all who do observe, but absolute gratitude from this part of Downunder for 31 RC. In fact, when I look at my collection, I think I should be thankful for Chanel in general. It is easily the most represented house I have bought, and I love them all.

Recently, someone here was seeking recommendations for non-church incense fragrances. I’ve had a chance to sample Hiram Green Voyage, “An ode to the exotic mysteries of India… as atmospheric and thrilling as a Mysore street market and as opulent as Octopussy’s floating palace on Lake Pichola.”

I’m only dabbing it from a sample vial, but I find it gentler than the description would suggest. It does remind me of India, as evoked by a 1970s head shop with that unique blend of Indian incense, sandalwood soap, carved shesham wood, block-printed bedspreads, and spices, minus the stonking patchouli and softened with vanilla. Basically a 1970s hippie vibe, lightened and streamlined like an iPhone 6. It’s worth a try.

That sounds lovely. I tried Bella Freud 1970 a couple of months ago and enjoyed its hippy incense vibe. I only tried it in a shop so can’t give a full description but I had low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

I just tried all three of his recently and Voyage was my favorite, although it’s possible that’s just because I’m too wimpy for the others. I didn’t get a lot of incense–more of a suede for me–but “softened with vanilla” was definitely my impression as well.

I like this one best, too, but I might have been disappointed if I’d read the description before I tried it. Noses are funny, I can’t find the suede at all. It seems very wearable, like well-worn jeans.

Started the day with an extra special 1 1/2 hour spin class, which I am so happy to have survived. Now post shower feeling fresh as a daisy, albeit a bit dehydrated. I made a boatload of pumpkin muffins, replacing the butter with coconut oil and the eggs with ground flax seed, then went ahead ahead and made them all kinds of unhealthy by adding a bag of chocolate ships. Hence the need for an extended spin class today 😉

I am competeing with all the luscious smells today by layering Nirvana Black Body Oily with PG Indochine. Scrumptious!

Hope everyone had a fantastic day, whether you celebrate Thanksgivng or not.

Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone that celebrates. Also, happy birthday to Charles Schultz. Can’t think of anyone that didn’t grow up with Charlie Brown and the gang. I wonder if he was aware that his characters would be a part of people’s lives decades after he created them. Wow! There are so many things that I am thankful for, I don’t even know where to begin. I am thankful for family, friends, health, job, NST, and the list goes on and on…..
Just finished showering, so I haven’t picked a fragrance yet.
More than likely, I will wear Leiber. This fragrance takes me back to a lot of fond memories. I hate it was DC’ed. Aren’t all the greats, though?

We’re going non-traditional this year – I’m fixing bo ssam (Korean slow roasted pork). If you’ve eaten this, you know we’re going to be chowing down. If you haven’t, I highly recommend checking out the recipe online (Bitten Word has a good one that I use). It’s a super easy, can’t-hardly-mess-it-up dish that feeds a crowd, and is delish.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

Happy Thanksgiving to our American friends.
Here in Canada, we have already managed to lose our extra turkey-stuffing-gravy pounds and are happily baking away for Christmas.

SOTD is Dark Rebel-Varvatos. Neither dark, nor rebellious.

I had a great few days in NYC last week (except for the part when I got lost on the subway and ended up somewhere in the Bronx!)
The fragrance shopping though was a bit of a let down. I ran out of time and was unable to get to Aedes. Bergdorf is in full renovation and fragrances are crammed in the basement (although the lady at the Clive Christian was just so nice, I almost did something crazy… P.S. “V” both the men and women version are my fav! Ya listening Santa???)
Sephora (Time Square) was a HUGE drag. It used to carry so many fragrances. Now it’s mostly just make-up. Canadian drugstores carry more fragrance brands than Sephora.
The LaGuardia duty free was almost non-existant.
I came back from NYC with no fragrances. None. First trip ever that this happens.
I Guess I’ll just need to go back soon.

    Have a great Day!!

I was there yesterday and I like it much better than the previous location. It is bigger but thinking to myself if that is why it seems they are carrying fewre lines. They also now have the Serge Lutens Bell Jars! I blame Aedes for sending me over to the Frederic Malle store as Aedes was out of stock of the item I wanted.

I would urge everyone to go see The Peanuts Movie, if you haven’t already done so. There are a lot of little inside jokes that long-time fans of the comic strip and TV specials will appreciate. They have also managed to remain true to the spirit of the original comic. In other words, they did not screw it up. If you can see it in 3D (as I did), by all means do so. The 3D is especially effective in the scenes where Snoopy is fighting the Red Baron.

Good morning, NST. It’s to be a muggy, showery day here, apparently, so I think I’ll wear a perfume that concentrates on keeping its cool under all circumstances: Cristalle. Oh, gorgeous–crisp citrus and dark moss are now filing the bedroom, and I’m inching towards the conclusion I might perhaps possibly have over-done my spraying. Oh well– it’s not yet 6.30. Probably it will have worn off a bit by the time I get among people! And if it hasn’t, well,, at least I’ll suffocate them with glory!

Every day I feel very thankful to be surrounded by the scents and sounds of nature. My daily hillside walks are filled with sweet nutty scents of broom and gorse, the dry woody fragrance of bracken, the green freshness of Manuka and Kanuka, and then the mossy, mulchy, leaf litter scent of beech and native forest. All this to the sound of tui, blackbirds, shining cuckoos, kingfishers, grey warblers and yellow hammers. I am just so, so, lucky.
Rain is hammering down on the roof and the sky has turned indigo. What a perfect start to the day. Cristalle for me!

We’re also going nontraditional this year – a prime rib roast, garlic mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts done with shallots and bacon, followed (if we can stuff anything more into ourselves at that point) by pumpkin pie from the locally legendary Beaverton Bakery. And then the Food Coma, no doubt, but a THANKFUL one.

Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate! I had a late start but these are lazy days for me…no food prep whatsoever. I will walk over to Wegmans in a little bit to pick up dessert for tonight. We’re going to a friend’s place for a traditional Thanksgiving feast.

I’m still commando but SOTD will be Guerlain Cuir Beluga. It is a family perfume-phobe safe comfort scent for me. I am thankful for family even if many are perfume/fragrance phobes, either real or imagined. I am also thankful for Guerlain and its stable of perfumes I love, most of which are in the L’Art et la Matiere and Les Elixirs Chrnels collections.

I’m wearing Azemour and baking a pound cake, and all the smells are divine! I’m grateful for all of you contributing to one of the brightest spots on the internet.

We watched the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving movie this week. Never fails to open the waterworks. We also “put up” our Charlie Brown table-top Xmas tree and the kitties are already intent on its destruction.
My husband is working today so I’m off to a friend’s for The Meal after baking an apple-pear-berry pie to bring along. Feeling a little melancholic as I’m missing my family today.
SOTD Amouage Beloved from my decant which is quickly being drained. I’ve read reviews where they’ve described Beloved as “aloof” but I don’t find it to be that way. It strikes me as rather soft and approachable and just lovely.
Wishing everyone a happy holiday or just a happy day. I’m thankful I stumbled on this fun, kind community (about this time last year, I think).

I don’t recall what Beloved smells like bit you smell great anyway! Have fun at your friend’s place! Snoopy and the gang are my favorite characters of all time and I am looking forward to the movie.

Elisa, I don’t find Beloved at all aloof, either – I always feel embraced by its warmth.

I find Beloved to be one of the more approachable of the Amouages. It’s my second favourite after Gold.

My perfumes are now mostly inaccessible due to the packing and hobbling double whammy. Wearing my little decant of Fifi again, which is one of only a couple rose-ish scents that suit me. Probably because it’s not terribly rosy.
I might top it off later with some of the R&G orange oil I thrifted recently, only because I noticed it’s still out.
It’s not thanksgiving here, but I’m thankful all the same for all the friends who’ve stepped up and helped me this week. I am lucky, indeed.

Oh Happy Happy Day to all. You guys are such a gift. I cannot tell you how many grumpy bumpy mornings you have turned around. Today I am in Santa Monica with the outlaws… so far no shots fired… and I even got some writing done this morning…so I am feeling quite delighted with the world.

A quick inspection of my perfume bag–hurriedly packed with little thought–shows that I brought the following with me this holiday:

    Oeillet Sauvage
    Bois des Iles
    Ostara
    Eau Premiere
Chamade (edt, does it come in edp or extrait?)

So I am leaning towards Bois des Iles for Thanksgiving dinner… but I have good choices all around. And that is boon and the bane of a perfume addict!

That’s an all-occasion, multi-purpose selection, Oakland. You might have thought about it for a week and not have chosen better!

I think BdI would work for a family dinner. There’s bound to be some gratuitous hugging, and outlaws (this has been scientifically proven) are almost always impressed into semi-permanent silence by sandalwood and soft spice….

SOTD has been Miss Dior Le Parfum. Amber/patchouli richness with just enough rose. I never see this one talked about much, but it is up with Coco and Opium, IMHO. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
