Wednesday scent of the day 11/25

Posted by Robin on 25 November 2015 159 Comments

Orange the World

It's hump day, Thanksgiving Eve (aka Drinksgiving), and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Ormonde Jayne Frangipani.

Reminder: this Friday, 11/27, we are giving thanks: wear a perfume you're thankful for. (suggested by thegoddessrena)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Floating around on my day off in a cloud of Noontide Petals! Probably over sprayed but la la! Did I mention DAY OFF!?! Yippee!

Eau de Gentiane Blanche, which is very dry, over a bit of Omani frankincense. It is a very nice pairing.

Someone with whom I split a gift set of Hermessences requested this as a sample but the boutique did not have samples of it. The tester was down to the last dregs but the little bit I smelled was wonderful. I will need to explore this further!

Picking up my mother from the hospital in a few and promise her I would be unscented. Afterwards I’ll probably go with Cedre. I have a while bottle of it and I never want to wear it. ????

I am commando this morning. Made a huge thing of homemade orange-cranberry sauce for tomorrows feast-and I am pooped.
After I shower I think I will put on a fragrance I am thankful for.

Some thoughts on Elimination of Violence against women and children day : When what we want for our own children becomes possible for >all< children in the world. Bracing myself against the chilly weather and a busy half day in a near empty office. I was good and decided to come in even though we could WFH because I have to make sure a few things get taken care of (hopefully). Wearing Nuit Rouge again – the incense is speaking to me and I might wear this for the rest of the week.

I must say, I used to love a day when the office was nearly empty and I could get 10 times as much done in the peace and quiet. Enjoy smelling great, Jenkr!

Yes! That’s exactly why some people prefer to come in on WFH days. There’s a handful of us here all locked away in our own offices and so far I’ve managed to get more done in the past two hours than I did all of yesterday!

I agree. I tend to get so much more work done at my school when the kids and the teachers aren’t there asking a million questions. Peace and quiet is fabulous when you are working.

I finally broke down and got a decant of Rose de Siwa after falling for my sample two years ago. The decant came yesterday, and when I opened it for a sniff I nearly cried, it was so beautiful. It smells like the best part of early summer.

Commando for yoga this morning, but then will wear my sample of Amouage Opus I.

Drinksgiving? I probably live under a rock, but hadn’t heard that one. Seems like a bit of an odd segue to Thanksgiving. (My yoga teacher called our last class “Planksgiving” which was a good one!)

I’m thankful to have all 3 sons home this week, a day off today, and so many wonderful fragrance samples to try. I’m thankful for fragrance in general and the spark of joy it adds to life, but in particular, I am enjoying my new bottle of JHAG Miss Charming more than I even thought!

On a serious note, I am thankful for people like Malala, who fight bravely on for better lives for children and women and really, everyone.

I used to manage a bar. It was one of the few days a year that employees were not allowed to request off, and was the top grossing day of the year. Generally speaking, the person doing the cooking for Thanksgiving kicks the rest of the family out of the house so prep work can be done in peace. Since they are homeless until the wee hours…to the bar they go. I’m so glad those days are behind me. I was always so worried about driving home after we closed.

I’m wearing Donna Karan fragrances, Donna Karan Woman. I also have Donna Karan Gold, which I also love. I know that Black Cashmere is a favorite of many of you out there in perfumista land, but do you like others in this line, that aren’t as hard to find?

I don’t have any DK fragrances, but I saw Cashmere Mist at TJ Maxx last week and wondered if it’s one of the beloved scents. I know Black Cashmere is hailed around here.

Cashmere Mist doesn’t get too much love around here. I have the edp, but will admit that it was better when it came out in the 90s; it’s clearly been reformulated. (Although there have been so many variations that it’s possible one is closer to the original and I just don’t know it yet.) The fragrance was originally what was used in Donna Karan body products and customers loved it so much they created a perfume. The shampoo and conditioner were good but are long discontinued. The body wash, lotion, and deodorant are still around. They’re all great and capture a softness that the sprays just don’t have.

I was reading today that in Australia, one woman dies every week due to domestic violence. Today here is White Flag Day- an acknowledgement by the men to not commit violence and to not turn a blind eye. Finally the realisation that it isnt just up to the woman to ‘remove herself’ or to not provoke it.

My SOTD was Laawan by S4P. (Science for Peace). It’s warm and sunny and coconutty though there is no coconut, and feels like a cross between Fils de Dieu and By Night, White.

It’s so sad! Especially in countries that still have gender equalities.
I watched a documentary on the violence and rape against that girl on the bus in India. I got maybe through 20 minutes into the film, and they’re basically blaming her for being out after hours in the dark and I just couldn’t take it anymore I had to turn off the TV -I was so disgusted.

Chamade, the edt. I’ve heard people aren’t that fond of this concentration but I think mine is not that new – it’s in the odd shaped angular bottle that’s thinner in the middle like someone squeezed the glass. I find it quite rich, particularly in the drydown. The parfum must really be something.

I have vintage Chamade EDT and I agree – very rich! I usually wear it in the spring, but now I want to see how it feels in the cold weather.

All the versions of Chamade I’ve tried are good, with minor variations. (I haven’t tried them ALL!) The vintage parfum de toilette is very very powdery; the vintage edt is more sparkly but its topnotes are really beginning to go. Older but not “vintage” parfum was gorgeously rich. Modern edp is lovely too.

I spent a November some years ago wearing Chamade every other day or so, because a main character in a story I was writing wore it. It isn’t light by any means, but I kept having a seasonal disconnect between my scent and the weather. It was disconcerting to me.

SOTD = Neela Vermeire Mohur Extrait on the right wrist, and a rose attar on the left.

Thank you Hajusuuri, for the sample of the extrait! It is beautiful and smells more realistically of roses than the attar. I accidentally layered argan oil lotion over the extrait so it is currently toned down, but the combination is delicious. 🙂

I’ve been so busy this week I haven’t been posting (Monday = Coco, Tuesday = YSL M7 [I’m really going to need to get a full bottle]). Today could be another long day, despite the fact that over half the office has taken today off or will be leaving early.

First time wearing Box of Eels… I wish I loved it, but so far I can only say I like it. It’s perfectly nice but it’s not wowing me. Kinda disappointed. Maybe my expectations were too high. It’s wearing very close to my skin, which will be great for those days when I need to keep my scent on the down-low. I suspect it would be better with a heavier application, but I’m working with a small sample-sized decant… So hard to get a decent amount out of it without spilling the juice all over the place! Anyway, I will keep trying this one. But maybe it’s good that I don’t crave a FB of another of the Chanel Les Exclusifs. I’ll save my money to 31RC.

I do love BdI, but it is very mood-driven for me. It’s a scent for high comfort, but not necessarily when I need comfort. I choose it more, I think, when I’ve killed all the dragons and I’m feeling all comfy in my skin. It’s great, for instance, for an Sunsay afternoon nap…yes, I do sometimes take one!

I did buy the extract, which might make a difference.

Box of Eels is my SOTD, and I’m very happy in it but sad because I used the last of my wee sample. It’s definitely one that I need more of. When I was in B&N earlier, their sound system was all Beatles, and when it got to “Let It Be” tears rushed to my eyes–overwhelming memories of a very sad time in the past. But Bois des Iles complemented it somehow and braced me. Happy Thanksgiving to all NST perfumistas!

Just set my perfume challenge for the day…to match my perfume to the daily horoscope I’ve just read in the newspaper. So, today, I have to ‘stay in the moment’ astrologically speaking ( this has thrown me already…how did the stars in the sky, the sun and moon and Saturn etc. come up with that, and isn’t that a bit rich coming from stars!?) anyway… Need a fleeting perfume, a here for one delicious second and then I’m gone perfume. I don’t own one of them so will wear L’Instant as I sit in bed munching a bowl of oats. It’s 6 am.

Almost all of his, I agree, although oddly, Narcisse Bleu has considerable staying power for a cologne. I think my favourite now-you-smell-it, now-you-don’t is Apres l’Ondee, but I also like Bel Respiro. It’s gorgeous, but it flits off. In fact, it behaves a bit like a fantail: arrives, flirts a little until you stop what you’re dong to admire and adore it, keeps you company for a while, then darts off. I don’t mind re-applying it, but it’s a big bottle to cart around, so I mostly wear it weekends.

I love your description … A fantail perfume, perfect. Now I have a perfume/ bird scenario in my head. Our neighbours have big white chooks that stomp around our gardens. I would call them Bronze Goddess but I know you’re fond of that scent!

Maks, I adore fantails, but they are meant to be harbingers of death if they are seen inside a house. In our family, though we see the connection with death, they are also symbols of hope. My mother was severely injured as a tiny child, and was paraplegic until she was 8 or so. When she was at her most desperately ill, two fantails came into the house and flitted around, staying for a long time. My grandmother apparently knew that her child was dying, and sat up all night until dawn, massaging mum’s legs and chest to keep the blood flowing, and come the dawn, mum turned the corner towards life. Fantails now have mixed symbolism for me, but I have a pendant of a small gold fantail sitting on a silver nikau palm, and I wear it for mum, family & life, quite often.

Hey, we don’t do Thanksgiving down here, but I’ve just hold a story about something to be thankful for, haven’t I? Here’s to Granny’s determination, and mum’s courage!

Thanks to the person yesterday who tipped us off to the upcoming L’Artisan sale on Hautelook, I just ordered a bottle of Amour Noctourne for $49 and a The et Pain D’epices candle for $35.

My friend and I both fell in love with AN at Barneys on Friday (but not the price) so I’ll be splitting the bottle with her for Christmas. 🙂

I enjoyed Bronze Goddess yesterday– it was fun and the epitome of bottled summer, but I’ve decided to be contrary today and wear a typically “winter” perfume, The temperature is supposed to get to the low twenties and the humidity is high, and I am going to wrap myself in a little cloud of Elephant. I’m curious to see how it behaves in some heat and on bare skin. Well, as bare, that is, as I allow my 63-year old body to be, which is not very….sigh. Some time ago, somewhere, I remember Annikky remarking that she didn’t classify her perfumes by seasons, and I realised I had been. This is my little localised experiment to end limitations and see if it’s a good thing to cross the Elephant over from winter into sort-of summer.

A propos of ending violence against women, I was troubled to see an item on the main news programme last night showing a bunch of cops in South Auckland walking a kilometre in women’s shoes to underline awareness of “wonen’s issues”. It was a cutesy symbolic gesture, I suppose, and clearly some PR person somewhere thought it would show the police in a sympathetic light if a couple of hundred burly blokes minced along the road in size 13 stilettos, but really? Is that the best we can do? Turn family violence into a publicity opportunity for the police force? I was ashamed.

Continuing with the theme of fragrances that I am thankful for, I am wearing Nectarine Blossom & Honey by Jo Malone. This is THE FRAGRANCE that started the obsession with perfume and sent me down the rabbit hole. I will forever be thankful and grateful for Jo Malone and the fragrances she created. They are unique, fresh, and can be combined with almost anything to create something special. One of the things on my bucket list is to go to London and visit her store and hopefully meet the lady herself.
Besides family, friends, good health, I am so grateful and thankful for NST; my “scented family”. Thanks for the years of good conversation, sharing, and smelling terrific in the process! 🙂

    SOTD = Papillon Angelique

I am continuing my week of thanksgiving. Today, I am thankful for indie perfumers (Liz Moores) who do their own thing and not at the direction of some faceless conglomerate whose sole mission is to make money even at the expense of quality. I am also thankful for indie perfume boutiques such as Indigo Perfumery in Cleveland. I met Ann Onusko, Indigo’s proprietress, at my first Sniffapalooza last year.. The smaller boutiques carry some of the more unusual lines that would otherwise be shipping cost prohibitive. I got my bottle of Angelique (and Anubis from the same line) from Indigo when it wasthe only retailer in the U.S. carrying the brand.

Angelique is a chameleon and does not quite smell the same each time I wear it which is not often enough. Today’s version started out woody-spicy with a himt of flowers, which then morphed into flowery (but not “perfumey’ flowery and it has now dried down to a cozy incensy sweetish iris.

Unfortunately, men are not excluded from victimization and violence. But a quick statistical Google will demonstrate that overwhelmingly, the majority of ANY TYPE (domestic, sexual, emotional, physical, ad nauseum) of violence/victimization are women and children.

Certainly, the documentation and research put into these statistical values is not an attempt to discredit men, but to highlight a serious global issue. Sorry if you feel slighted or offended by that.

I agree with you that calling attention to violence against women certainly doesn’t imply that violence against men isn’t also a terrible problem, any more than calling attention to colon cancer implies that skin cancer doesn’t matter!

But on the statistical question… it’s not actually the case that women are always the majority of victims, in every single category. For instance, in the U.S., men are the overwhelming majority of murder victims. It may even be the case–though evidence on this is very difficult to collect reliably, for all genders–that men are the majority of U.S. rape victims, owing to the extremely high rates of incarceration and rape in prisons. Again, just as you say, the fact that violence against men is a very serious issue does not mean that we can’t ever call attention to the issue of violence against women specifically, but I think being accurate about the nature and dimensions of the problem is both the most ethical choice and the best hope, ultimately, for finding effective ways to address it. Signed, your friendly neighborhood social scientist 🙂

I haven’t been able to read NST much this week, so apologies if this has already been mentioned! Anyway, Chicago folks might like to know that Barneys Chicago now carries all the SL bell jars. It was a fun surprise when I visited on Sunday. Cesar, the SL rep, is still ‘learning’ all the new scents, and I had a great time sniffing them along with him (ISM and Bois de Violette are now vying for a spot on my buy list!). Also, I think someone mentioned last week that they were looking for Annick Goutal in Chicago. Bloomingdales recently started carrying the line in store. It’s been so long since I’ve seen AG in a department store. Such a nice line–accessible scents with something to please everyone.

That was me looking for AG in Chicago. Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely be making a trip to Bloomingdales.

I wonder if there are ever any NST Chicago get-togethers? That would be fun, since none of my local friends are very interested in perfume.
