Tuesday scent of the day 11/24

Posted by Robin on 24 November 2015 198 Comments

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Woman with an umbrella, detail

It's Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's birthday today. What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

I'm in Aedes de Venustas Oeillet Bengale.

Reminder: this Friday, 11/27, we are giving thanks: wear a perfume you're thankful for. (suggested by thegoddessrena)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Be in Dr Reglisse today. Even though it lasts about the length of a movie I still absolutely adore it.

SSS Winter Woods, which is too sweet for me. That is two in a row that I have liked in the past that smell too sweet this week–time to move to the dry side of the cabinet.

Still want to try Oeillet. Going to have to force myself to do some vacuuming/dusting, ugh. May be doing so in a cloud of Eau Premiere…or something more opulent.

Today I’m really thankful for the Nuit Rouge I’ve generously applied today. It’s giving me strength to deal with people (the same ones mentioned yesterday) who really need a kick in the butt to realize just how good they have it here and how generously the owner of the company spoils us. There are a couple of seriously ungrateful jerks in this office and I really want to punch one of them in the face right now. ( I know that wouldn’t solve anything, but my gut reaction is echoed by literally 90% of the office – that’s how awful this person is.)
Lots of uplifting grapefruit and incense for me today. And then I walk into a friend’s office and shout SERENITY NOW because then we all laugh and get the joke.

Ugh – hope the one you want to punch in the face is the one that will soon be gone!

I looked on Fragrantica for this one because it’s not one I’d heard of, and if it’s Antonio Alessandria, I’m loving the Art Deco aesthetic of the labels.

Yes! I got a sample of it and immediately fell in love, which is odd because normally grapefruit and I don’t get along. The incense in this is gorgeous though and although it’s light, it lasts all day for me. And I totally do the hair diffuser sprays now.

I love Toulouse Lautrec. Visited the museum dedicated to his work in Albi years ago. Very much worth a visit.
SOTD is PdN’s Musc Intense, lovely and soft, second time of wearing it and I fear I’m hopelessly smitten.

This is not one of their best, actually. Still really nice, and perhaps easier to like than some others. My favourite is still a tie between the original New York and Sacrebleu.

Agree – Rose Musc is pretty but not terribly original.

My favorites are Le Temps d’une Fete and Vanille Tonka, with Kiss Me Tender a runner-up. However, with LTdF totally discontinued at this point and KMT reworked into Kiss Me Intense… and VT refo’ed… I’ve rather gone off Nicolai as a company lately.

Well I spent a lovely hour sniffing the whole line in September at one of their Parisian shops, so I’m pretty much still a fan. It’s a great pity about Le Temps but there must have been valid reasons. KMI is pretty close to KMT in my memory.

In between the two. And I don’t mean this as a joke. It doesn’t seem either clean or dirty, just pillowy, and floral. It’s cleaner than Musc Nomade, but not as clean as Claire de Musc.

Another way in which we’re similar! I love Toulouse Lautrec, too. (My current gravatar is his greatest influence Degas, but I often think it should be Rosa, “the Laundress” – his paintings of her were some of the first I feel in love with, as a teenager.)

I hadn’t recognised your gravatar as a Degas, and have since looked up Rosa. Degas is another painter whose work I admire very much. Have you seen his l’Absinthe?

If you are ever in the area the Lautrec museum is so worth a visit. It’s next to Albi’s stunning red brick cathedral. What made it especially worth while to me was the fact that Lautrec was born, and grew up in the area.

I wasn’t much interested in art as a teenager. My first contact with paintings was a visit to the Nationalgalerie in then West-Berlin in the mid eighthies. I remember very well being completely stunned by a few impressionist paintings, probably Monets.
I think I first discovered Lautrec a couple of years later when I was in France, along with Cézanne, Gauguin and all the rest.

Oeillet Bengale is, thus far, my favorite of the Aedes de Venustas series. I visited their new location down the street from their old one last night and it’s just as lovely an experience as it was before (no affiliation of course).

Also, I tried Rose of No Man’s Land, and I may have found my favorite rose soliflore. It’s like a rose that’s sitting up straight and ready to get to work, if that makes any sense.

Going back now to respond and thank everyone who wished me well yesterday, and also – HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARJORIE ROSE! I hope it was splendid.

There’s the rhubarb-y original, Iris Nazarena, Copal Azur, and Palissandre d’Or. If I recall correctly, Robin liked them all and each successive one more than the last. Thus far, the carnation is the one that calls to me most, but that could change.

I’m wearing NEST Indigo from a little rollerball/deluxe sample from Sephora. It’s a fruity fig, kind of in the vein of Womanity.

There’s something about NEST that I’m not buying as a perfume line, I’m not sure why. Maybe they should have gone with a different brand name for the perfumes vs. the home products.

That’s interesting because I have a friend who said almost the exact same thing. She wasn’t overly impressed with their fragrance line as a whole, but thought it should be branded differently.
I like the ornate look of their bottles.

Yeah I wasn’t that impressed with the perfumes anyway, but I still feel like the branding is wrong — having the candle brand on there makes them seem overpriced.

Drained my wee decant of La fille de Berlin, and now wish I had done a wrist to wrist with Rose of No Man’s Land… inspired by ihadabrilliantidea (I thought it was true-can’t remember who wrote it!).

But am enjoying ambient rose just the same.

I have had a couple of Latin/perfume questions for a while and Robin just reminded me to ask: Aedes de Venustas

    1. What does it mean? My translator app says it means Temple Venustas… when I look up venustas alone I get “attractive.”

    2. There is a perfume shop called Aedes de Venustas, so I assume that the perfume line Aedes de Venustas is the shop’s own. And one of its fragrances is called Aedes de Venustas Eau de Parfum– created by a personal favorite, Bertrand Duchaufour. But when I was in the shop a little over a year ago, I was steadily nudged towards to Frederic Malles, and don’t believe I tested a single Aedes de Venustas while there. What gives?

    3. But wait. There is more…. there is also the perfume Aedes de Venustas by L`Artisan Parfumeur, also created by the highly productive Bertrand Duchaufour. Its notes are noting at all like Aedes de Venustas Eau de Parfum by Aedes de Venustas. What is going on here? My brain is too small for multiple perfumes having the same name…

    4. Does anyone own the L`Artisan Parfumeur AdV and some in the AdV line? What was your purchasing trajectory?

La fille de Berlin is full bottle worthy in my opinion!
The folks at Aedes are great-you should give them a call and ask them. They would love to talk about themselves I am sure!

OKAY. I am not at all the Aedes expert, at ALLLLL. However, I remember when the second (non-l’Artisan) AdV scent came out, so I will attempt to clarify.

The first AdV scent was produced by L’Artisan in homage to/participation with the shop. It was an oriental spicy-incensey thing done by B Duchaufour and if I remember correctly had that weird murky-shadowy Duchaufourade to it.

The second one was the first of the AdV line, also titled Aedes de Venustas, also created by BD, as a fruity chypre-ish fragrance with rhubarb and tomato leaf. They are nothing the same, however, I’d say they were both recognizably Duchaufours.

My translator thingie says AdV translates to “Temple of Beauty.”

So those definitely are the store’s own branded line, and if I am not mistaken, they did a collaboration with L’Artisan first, and then more recently developed their own line. I don’t own any of them myself but I liked the one I tried…an oddball rhubarby one? Ah Fragrantica says that Aedes EDP by Aedes, not to be confused with Aedes by L’Artisan, nor the perfumes of various other names by Aedes. Yes it’s confusing! And I can’t account at all for why you’d be steered to the FMs, my guess is just that it was a quirk of whomever was helping you, that s/he prefers those and/or felt you would!

Happy Tuesday everyone! Reposting a question from very very late yesterday-

I have a friend in France who is curious about the best places online to get samples and decants in Europe. Being in the US myself, I don’t know the answer and I figured this would be the perfect place to ask 🙂 Thank you in advance!

I don’t know about decants, but samples can be ordered from Ausliebzumduft, Skins.nl and Parfumaria.com. I’m guessing that the best place for decants is ebay.

Ah, just answered the same question for a friend of mine. So, not online, but if your friend is near a Sephora, the selection in France is amazing: Serge, L’Artisan, Penhaligon’s, etc. So there’s a ton to try in person. Then there’s a store called Nose, which I haven’t used myself (alas I was not yet into perfume when I was living in France–horrible waste) but which sounds cool–they do an online program where you fill out a “diagnostic” and it generates 5 recommendations, which you can purchase as a set for 10Euro (shipping and tax included). The one unfortunate thing is that while you can redo your diagnostic if you don’t like its recommendations, you can’t pick samples à la carte. But if your friend is new to perfume, maybe s/he’d be happy to have someone else choose! And the store seems to carry really nice things, so basically it’s similar to getting one of LuckyScent’s preselected sample packs, where you might not know what you’re getting but you know everything will be very good.

Then additionally, your friend could always go for brands’ own sample sets. Juliette Has a Gun, Parfums de Rosines, Tauer, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Etat Libre d’Orange, Atelier, L’Artisan all do reasonably priced sample sets (preselected or pick your own) from their brand websites, or even MDCI or Ormonde Jayne, if your friend were inclined to spend more money. And I believe all of those ship to (or in many cases, within!) France for no extra charge. There’s really a lot of perfume to be had for not too great an investment, on many of those sample sets!

Hope that helps–tell your friend s/he should come let us know how it goes! 🙂

Oh, you know, additionally, their site’s a little confusing but Jovoy seems to offer sets of 5ml decants, where they’ve picked a large group of fragrances (120 they’re calling their “Black Box” and 30 in their “Red Box”) and you get to select five from your preferred category. Looks like a set of five from the Black Box would be 30Euro (5 x 6Euro, inclusive of shipping when in France) and a set of five Red Box would be 60Euro (5 x 12Euro), but either way that’s a pretty great deal on 30ml of niche decants! Darn, now I wish I could do that 🙂

I don’t know about France, but I’m based in Switzerland and have been ordering samples/decants from Surrender to Chance in the US and samples/perfume from First in Fragrance (Ausliebezumduft) in Germany. Works beautifully. Then as someone mentions you can often order directly from perfume brand websites.

    Hello and good morning, all!
I just wanted to drop in a note thanking everyone for the birthday wishes yesterday! I didn’t get back to the forum until late and figured no one would see it (except maybe Joanna)!

I didn’t get any sniffies this year, although Mr. Spicebomb tried! Apparently Nostalgie was out of stock when he tried to buy it for me. I drained the bottle a while back, so I will definately be getting some sooner or later–maybe with some birthday money. That makes it not count on the damage poll, right?!

I *did* get a Garmin Forerunner 225 running watch, and I’m already having fun playing with it, even though I’m not a techie person. Will try it out at the gym this morning before Parent Conferences Day 2, beginning at noon.

    All the best to everyone!

Wearing Eau des Bouffees de Chaleur, a new discovery for me…and flanker to L’air des Sueurs Nocturnes. Created by gifted Spanish experience designer Meno Pausia, the tops notes are listed as Carolina Reaper, Naga Morich, Poivre Noire with a hint of wasabi. Dry down is confusingly watery – more ‘fish tank’ than Ombre dans L’eau. For an all natural perfume, the sillage is surprisingly strong and long lasting (even attracts the attention of perfume-indifferent family members). Conclusion: Predictably unpredictable. Good news: marketed towards the over 50s…for once!

I tried to compile a Hot Flush Top 10 while I was lying awake in bed last night…scents that are cool, calm and collected or, alternatively, totally distracting (so strangers notice the scent not the red faced woman wearing it). And then I tried thinking up a scent twin…and then I fell asleep.

Oakland, furious procrastination is happening here too: went down town to the optician to collect my new reading glasses (yay x 100) and ended up at my favourite department store (everybody knows my name….). Oh dear. How I love pretty colours! So, confession time: I bought a new lip glossy thing, very natural colour– excellent; a blusher — odd colour, but terribly pretty on, and a powder compact thing “for touch ups, ma’am…” (the assistant is new and American, and Americans are sooooo polite always; the only time I am ever ma’am-ed or doctored is when I’m talking to Americans).

Testing Tauerville Amber Flash today… it’s more of a warm incense than a regular amber, definitely not a heavy-vanilla amber (which is a good thing, in my book). So I sprayed Tauerville Incense Flash on the other hand, and that’s quite different, more of a dusty cold incense. Overall I’m thinking that Amber Flash is my favorite Tauerville so far. It’s niiiice.

Hello, hello, hello. Wednesday, and my equilibrium has been somewhat restored, helped a lot by gobbling down Angela’s new book last night. I really enjoyed it. Today I’m seeking a new (to me) perfume experience, so I think I’ll wear Bronze Goddess. I’ve got a quiet day in my office today, nothing in the diary except meetings with a couple of students and some writing, so that will be both enjoyable and restorative. If I like BG as much as I think I will, that too will be fun.

The admin staff in my school do five minutes of “office exercises” devised by some fit young whippet of a sports science graduate from the staff gym, and I’ve been joining in whenever I can. When I finish, slightly pink and warm, I am conscious that my SOTD has temporarily filled their space. I’ve had lots of compliments, but to a person, they hate Femininite du Bois.: You smell like a man!” “You smell of wood!” And, oddly, “You smell like my priest!” (I didn’t enquire within on that one.) The morning session has become my litmus test for other people’s perceptions of perfume on me. Let’s hope that BG is received well. I shall report back. If anyone’s interested, the perfume that received universal and strongest approval was SL Loukoum. The Chanels often receive a split vote, even 19, but everyone liked 31 RC on me. Whew!

Hi, waterdragon! Glad you are feeling re-equilibrated! Those are very interesting perfume vote results. I guess I’m not surprised about FdB. I’m not sure I’ll ever understand it, but I love the mystery.

Glad you mentioned Angela’s new book, which I had somehow missed. I wish I could resist gobbling her books. I’d like to extend the fun, but I can’t stop reading.

Nozkoz, I actually was surprised by the reaction to FdB. To me, it’s a very beautiful, sheer wood, underpinned by judicious spicing, elegant, spare, and not masculine at all. I was, by contrast, surprised by the fondness for Rahat Loukoum — I’m in A Deep Relationship with gourmands, but I thought most people would think them too sweet. Maybe they all liked it because I feel so good in it.

It’s called The Booster Club. It’s about a bunch of elderly con-artists and crooks who come out of retirement for Reasons, but more than that I won’t say.

        Enjoy!

Hi Waterdragon! I hope you like Bronze Goddess. It has quickly become one of my favorites. I typically wear this fragrance in the summer, but I am known to sneak it in the fall and winter as well. If you happen to like it, you will love, love, love the whipped body cream! You could truly wear it alone, but I always layer it with the perfume. Let us know what you think 🙂

Yes, I’m really liking it! I’m slightly warm today (nice for a change!) and it’s wafting around me like a metaphor for high summer. The admin people told me I smelt like a beach party, which is about right. I will definitely look out for the body cream.

I’ve been wearing Nobile 1942 Ambra Nobile recently, my favorite cold-weather amber. I tend to find ambers either a bit boring or a bit overbearing, but this is my Goldilocks amber.

(For warm weather, it’s Thierry Mugler Oriental Express, one of the Les Exceptions series.)

Now I’m curious about Nobile 1942’s La Danza Delle Libellule. Has anyone tried that one? I see there is also a new extrait version of it.

Hi nozknoz, I think MikasMinion has Libellule. She may be able to answer. Also, Lucky Scent sells it but never seems to have a sample available for purchase.

Yep, I caved and bought a bottle of La Danza just last week. It’s not super complicated, but I find it cozy, clean, and lightweight. Great for reading a book in my PJs. If you’re in the US and don’t mind waiting a week, I can send you a sample. They threw in a sample of the extrait, which is nice but I don’t like enough to drop the cash on. My email is my username at gee-mail.

Has anyone smelled Polo Supreme Oud? I think I might just order the travel size for giggles and to have the bottle. POLO OUD! LOL

Continuing the week of gratitude fragrances with Guerlain Iris Ganache. I bought a 5/8 full bottle online several years ago and am happy to have it. Such a strange and beautiful perfume. I usually don’t care for overly sweet scents, but this one is an exception!

In Café Rose again today. It really does seem so right for this time of year and goes with a fairly insane work schedule and the ongoing saga of a building project…still although I am not in the US I have decided to be thankful for everything including the ludicrous volume of work, so thank you for inspiring me to greater calm with a week of gratitude. Plus we have an early Thanksgiving celebration in our London office this evening and I might go and have some food, which helps with the work…

    SOTD = Bvlgari Black

I am also continuing my week of thanksgiving. Thank you for swapmeets and generous swappers and perfume blogs, without which I would not have tried this staple of my collection. I had a back up to the back up and now I’m using the first back up AND considering getting another back up to the back up of the back up.

I have one! One of the small ones, about the size of a baseball. It sits on a dresser in my office next to a big window. On a sunny, warm day the area around the ball is scented–a very similar scent to Histoires de Parfums’ Ambre 114. It is pretty, and I like to pick it up and sniff it–but it is not much of a room scent if that is what you are looking for.

I’ve never had one of the Boules in my house, so I can’t speak to how strong they are or how long they last, but I have a sachet sample of the material that goes in the Boule de Provence, and it’s very strong and smells heavenly. The price gave me some sticker shock, but it does smell VERY good…

Oh you know, I’ve just noticed that you can buy refills for…well certainly not cheap but much less expensively. (And for that matter, Twisted Lily has them, for the Provence one at least, priced slightly lower than the L’Artisan website: http://twistedlily.com/shop/diffusers/la-boule-de-provence-white-ball/ ) So you could get a small one of whichever scent you think you’d prefer to see how you like it, and then refill as desired? That seems very reasonable to me 🙂

I had one long ago, but I broke it 🙁 It sat in a warm corner of my bedroom in front of a window and cast a lovely scent about three feet. I had it in my closet for a while too, which was lovely. Mine wasn’t wooden though, it was terracotta and very sturdy really. I dropped my largest Le Creuset pot on it when I was moving so it didn’t stand a whisper of a chance.

I’m sort of having one of those days where what I want to wear is something I don’t have… one of those weeks, actually. For some reason I’ve been craving a good earthy rooty iris, maybe in the ISM ballpark, but that description doesn’t match any of the irises I have at the moment.

So I went in a different direction and decided that Tom Ford Plum Japonais would do. I have a little mini and hadn’t worn it in a long time. To me it’s basically Feminite du Bois minus most of the bois. I like it, but really it’s just making me think I need to get more FdB. And bonus is that FdB is considerably less expensive.

BTW, everyone who bought Amouage Beloved on one of the discount sites this year has something to be thankful for. Beloved was originally a Bergdorf Goodman exclusive that they no longer carry, as far as I can tell from the website. Now, Luckyscent is offering “limited quantities” – at $445 for the 100-ml bottle. (Basically the original price, IIRC.) There do still seem to be some discounted bottles on the internet. (No affiliation.)

It is kind of puzzling, because Beloved is such a wonderful and wearable perfume. I wonder if it has to do with their original exclusive agreement with Bergdorf Goodman, or perhaps the ingredients are no longer feasible? Another factor is that it’s even more expensive than Gold, which is $325 for 100 mls; but that’s not stopping Roja Dove or Stéphane Humbert Lucas, is it?

Wearing one of my neglected bottles today. PdN’s Kiss Me Tender, regular version. It’s one of the few perfumes that doesn’t fade away by mid day and maintains soft but detecable sillage. Lovely

In day four of Chanel no 5 but I am wearing the EDP version of it. I couldn’t wait to get off of work today to get home. I knew that I had my package of vintage Mitsouko waiting for me. I knew the stopper would be stuck but now I am confused. It’s a 8 ounce teardrop bottle (dolphin label, so pretty old) and I open up the package, so far so good but after I get through the bubble wrap, I get to the ziploc bag and now this is where I get confused. The bottle has leaked and I am thinking that the seller might have opened it once and just jammed the stopper down and couldn’t get it open. But how would this bottle leak, it what I am wondering.

Yeek, hope you didn’t lose a lot.

I’m assuming it travelled ground, by truck, and it’s been cold. And assuming the glass of the neck is the thinnest, if the neck got cold all the way through, it could conceivably contract a bit, forcing the stopper up. (The stopper having a greater mass of glass, so taking longer to get cold, would contract less.) Somethin’s gotta give, as the saying goes. Just a guess, but seems likely.

CDG Incense Kyoto from an amazing box of samples sent by a lovely NST’er. Hoping for serenity, calming and even healing effects while moving with a broken leg! That’s a lot to ask for from a perfume sample, so I’m just hoping to project calm and capable-ness in the short term.
