Thursday scent of the day 11/19

Posted by Robin on 19 November 2015 192 Comments

Yves Saint Laurent Kouros Silver campaign

Happy International Men's Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a dab (really, just a dab is enough) of Yves Saint Laurent Kouros.

Reminder: tomorrow, wear a fragrance from Yves Saint Laurent, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Vintage Chanel No. 5, which I haven’t worn in ages. Just another chapter in the multi tome book entitled “Why Don’t I Wear This More Often!”

I finally got around to putting on fragrance about 7 pm yesterday, and it was, of course, vintage No 5 extrait. Nothing like it in the world.

YSL Jazz for me today; a dry, transparent fougere with some wormwood at the top and a bit of moss and sandalwood in the base.

AG Le Chèvrefeuille. Got a bottle recently. Of course, it’s not seasonal at all, and we’re evidently in line for some snow tomorrow night. I’m hanging on to bottled flowers and sunshine, even if winter looks inevitable.

Mmm, nice eye candy for today’s photo. Much better than yesterday :p

I’m wearing Cuir de Lancome today. It’s very much one of those throw up hair without brushing it and throw on clothes – make up for sloppiness with some decent eye makeup look. It wouldn’t help my frizzy hair to be nicely done today anyway since it’s so humid and rainy out.

Testing Zoologist Beaver and Hummingbird perfumes today. While Hummingbird is more approachable, I find Beaver to be more interesting–a hit of fresh then the animalics come up quickly along with some wood and a pinch of iris.

Also, two weeks from today a bunch of us will be meeting up in NY for live sniffing so email me if anyone would like to join us. My screen name is my yahoo address

On this crisp pre-winter morning I’m in Etat Libre d’Orange Afternoon of a Faun, a foresty, spicy almost-chypre.

BTW, the new Yves Rocher limited-edition Christmas things are out, and as usual, I bought all the shower gels, and as usual, one of them is good and the others aren’t. Spicy Vanilla isn’t really either of those things, and Candied Orange and Almond smells bizarrely like pool cleaner (although the scent that lingers on your skin after you’ve towelled off is nice), but Candied Orange and Cinnamon is SPECTACULAR. What a shame they didn’t do an EDT of it as they’ve done in the past: I’d snap that up. Still, there’s body lotion, hand cream, and lip balm, so I guess you could still smell good for a while.

SOTD is Fils de Dieu, which always makes me happy.

Does anyone have any vanilla suggestions that are good for layering? I’m looking for something that’s not so nuanced (or pricey) that it deserves to be worn on its own, but that layers well with other scents when they (I) need an extra kick of vanilla.

Hm, now that I think about it, I guess “deserves to be worn on its own” was kind of a harsh term on my part. I adore vanilla, too and would wear just about any vanilla on its own. 🙂

I’ll have to test out Island Vanilla. I see it fairly often, but for whatever reason, never tried it.

        SOTD = (vintage) Chloe Narcisse/Shalimar

Another French perfume I am testing to see if it would match my mother’s taste. Her signature is vintage Diorissimo parfum, so I daren’t even think she would consider a different Lily of the Valley perfume. However, she is nearing the bottom of her bottle, so I’m looking to other florals.

Thus far Narcisse is somewhat off-putting, perhaps it has expired. I confess I was anticipating a clear rendition of narcissus, but all I am getting a cloyingly sweet floral. Not a generic white floral, but not pleasant. 30 min and now it has disappeared.

I’ll chalk this one up as a NO and wear the Shalimar I brought along just in case I had to scrub.

Does anyone have any alternatives to suggest?

If you can still get your hands on it, the Badgley Mischka Fleurs de Nuit is a very proper white jasmine with just a hint of oriental to warm it up a bit. Or how about L’AP Chasse aux Papillons?

DelRae Debut is an option, but I find the linden in the opening a little screechy. I like Oriza L. Legrand’s Muguet Fleuri, for a nice soft LOTV scent. It’s heavier as in more powdery and less green, but it is a gentle and long lasting LOTV fragrance…

I was a hyuuuuuge fan of the original Chloe – and I love narcissus notes in general – but I didn’t like Chloe Narcisse. Can’t tell you why (look, it’s been 20+ years since I smelled it!), but I thought it was truly horrendous back when it was new.

So your sample might be off, or you might just have the same opinion as me. 🙂

I’m taking a break from YSL today, finally getting around to testing the new-ish Tauerville Incense Flash. Its very nice, and may go on my (crazy long) FB list, but I already have a number of well-loved incense fragrances so I’m not sure.

Can you believe he’s already come out with a new one (Amber Flash, I think)? Has anyone tried it?

I have! I liked it, but it’s different from the other Flashes IMO, and very different from the main Tauer line. It’s a pretty straightforward amber rather than really involving other notes, and it’s a nice medium weight (veering sheer? esp grading on the Tauer scale). But I think it smells nice and the price is terrific, so anyone in the market for a Goldilocks amber (not too loud, not too quiet, maybe just right!) would do well to try it!

It does take a while to warm up, yes. I wouldn’t say it’s acrid on me, exactly, but it does have an asphalt-y note early on that might read as acrid on someone else. After about an hour, the oddball notes are mostly gone, and it’s all sandalwood and broom (or maybe hay) on me. And after about three hours, it’s pretty much sandalwood. I love it.

Repetto EDT for me. I saw it yesterday for $14 at Nordstrom Rack and couldn’t resist. I’ve loved the pretty, ballet-themed packaging and marketing since the release. The perfume itself is perfectly nice, one my 20-something self would have loved. A soft fruity floral with a tiny hint of mild patchouli. I probably won’t wear it often, but I’ll enjoy the pretty bottle and the cheap thrill. 🙂

Maybe a preteen. I noticed that it grows up a little in the dry down, trading the fruitiness for soft vanilla with a bit more patchouli. I like it more at the end of the day than the beginning. But it’s totally a skin scent at that point, no silage, so still appropriate for someone younger.

I got a sample of this recently from the swapmeet. It is interesting for sure – very unisex. The drydown reminds me of the drydown of L’AP Nuit de Tuberose – peppery and milky.

Really, Fate is soft on you? I love it but I have been told it is a little much for my office environment. My skin eats some things, but Fate apparently lasts tenaciously and wafts vigorously on me. 🙂

I could go for that! From what I’ve read about others’ experience with it, the fact that it is soft on me is the clearest evidence that I have scent-eating skin. So beautiful when I press my nose to my wrist though.

The Goddess Rena told me about this one last year, but I wasn’t paying attention, so I need to tell her now – you were so right about this one, hon!

From the sample drawer…. Something called Bamboo Harmony by By Killian… I defy a man in a rush stuck in an endless security line at the airport to tell the difference between this and Elizabeth Arden’s Green Tea… The notes on Fragrantica say it has white tea, mate, fig leaves and oakmoss… (which does sound amazing!)… but I get fresh citrus and pale green tea…and some other interesting vibes… but to nine out of ten tired noses in a queue… Elizabeth Arden. However, I bet this baby has way more staying powder…so its me and Green Tea for the long haul.

I love the original Calice Beckers in the original BK L’Oeuvre Noire and her first two Ouds, but have been underwhelmed by anything since (that I have tried – I must have missed one or two). The packaging has been great – I would be very happy to have one of the snake clutches or the white version of the original bottles.

Very apt your choice of the man stuck in the endless security line, LOL.

After my day started to improve yesterday afternoon (Luckyscent order arrived, I reduced my AT&T bill and arranged new internet service without yelling, and the grocery store had my favorite sandwich cheese on special. It’s the little things), I risked a spray of Byredo’s Rose of No Man’s Land on the back of my hand. Wow. It’s still with me this morning so I’m just going to refresh and run with it. I haven’t liked a rose soliflore this much in quite a while, but it isn’t actually anything I can pin down. If I analyze it, it’s just a clear, peppery rose.

Your luck was due to change, MM, and I’m glad it did. Always looking on a quest for my HG rose soliflore, so very curious about this Byredo. Pepper makes me a bit nervous. The newer roses all seem to be spoiled by either spiky woods or white musk.

It isn’t annoying me, the pepper. I’ve decided it reminds me of the old Caldrea Rose Pink Peppercorn stuff but much nicer, also reminds me a bit of a sheer version of Agent Provocateur, but I haven’t sniffed either in so long they probably don’t have that much in common.

Hi, everyone. It’s Friday! Eggzellent! I’m wearing my only YSL perfume, Rive Gauche, which I love to wear at weekends with a crisp white shirt and jeans. Can’t be in such totally relaxed clothes today, though, because of a really dull Thing I have to do this afternoon, so I’m currently experiencing a slight disjoin between the story the perfume tells me and the clothes I’ve chosen. I daresay I’ll reconcile the separate elements of my outfit eventually, but right now I feel a little as though my elbows are facing the wrong way, or something uncomfortable of that sort. I’m not quite totally happy n my skin, anyway.

Since I seem to be draining my 30ml bottle at an alarming rate I’ve been thinking of -perhaps, maybe- looking into a vintage version of this brew rather than buying another EDP. Not sure what *more* a vintage could offer if the current version is lubberly as it is. Hmm.

Still on my Chanel kick — it’s Cuir de Russie today. Which I may, just possibly, have worn a bit much of. I started out the work day in a meeting in an overly-warm conference room. I stepped out for a few minutes then came back, and could definitely tell that the room was scented with the floral top notes from CdR. I’ll just consider it my contribution to making the meeting slightly less dull.

SOTE: My Sin, which I am currently fascinated with due to the following sequence of events:
    1. Found giant container of My Sin body powder at an estate sale. Started using it. Thought, Hm, doesn’t smell very interesting, kind of just like powder
    2. Found teeny micro mini of vintage My Sin in an antique store. Tried it on. Smells very interesting.
    3. Also smells EXACTLY LIKE THE POWDER.
So now I’m a little obsessed with how the same smell can be so ignorable in one mode and so intense in another. Like I feel like my nose has been tricked. But it is a fun confusion that I am finding so so interesting.

Interesting. I bought a vintage My Sin on eBay, but it was totally turned and icky. Better luck next time, I hope.

Huh. That is fascinating. Now I’m going to be alert to see if I can spot this olfactory trick.

The Everything is Awesome Week is almost over! Turns out I was wrong about having an afternoon meeting, so there was only the one morning meeting of We are Great. Wore Ambre de Merveilles and it was very protective.

I hated the We are Great meetings. They usually occurred as everything was going to hell in a handbasket.

Home at last! Not a layering experiment, just wanting to wear all the perfumes now that I can, I have Shangri La on the right upper body, 24 Faubourg on the left (I didn’t see the similarities until now, btw) and as soon as I change I think Mohur on lower left and Une Rose de Kandahar on lower right. They may smell me from the moon and I’m perfectly ok with that!

SOTD = Chanel 28 La Pausa

8-spray La Pausa lasted over 10 hours. It is fleeting but if one oversprays, there is no need to touch up. Of course, it could be very different for each person. Oh how I wish this came in parfum extrait!

Thinking I’m the last person on earth who had never smelled Encre Noir, I decided to check out my local Marshalls. I ended up with 2 cheap thrills: Adam Levine for Her for $9.99 and Marc Jacob BANG for $14.99. BANG had no price tag and it took 5 minutes for someone to decide that it’s $14.99. Combined, I’m under Free. The search continues for Encre Noir.

Late again today. I wore Black Jade all day and am testing Mitsouko Perfume and Mohur Extrait. All I can say is Wow and Wow. Budget-smuget, oh well. Not sure if anyone will see this but can anyone tell me if the EDPs are anywhere near as nice as the perfume versions of these two?

I can only vouch for Mohur – the extrait is the way to go!

I was afraid that someone was going to say that. I looked it up on LS and the price is way beyond my comfort zone. I guess I’ll just make due with samples. Thanks Hajusuuri!
