Tuesday scent of the day 11/10

Posted by Robin on 10 November 2015 222 Comments

Van Cleef Arpels Fragrance of Happiness

Happy Tuesday! If you have a spare moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing Van Cleef & Arpels Bois d'Iris.

Reminder: this Friday will be Cheap Thrill Friday...as we head into the holiday spending period, wear a fragrance that would not break the bank even in a full size. (suggested by Bardot)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image via Van Cleef & Arpels at Facebook ... "Les Fleurs Enchantées - Blooming Creativity “Fragrance of Happiness” for Van Cleef & Arpels by Ming Kiang Tan, crafted by Caterina Crepax. The flower has a power which dwells within a fragrance that burst forth the scent of extraordinary happiness and enchantment, the feeling that one’s received in front of a Van Cleef & Arpels jewel piece.”

I’m wearing Shalimar Ode a la Vanille, which has become a go-to no matter the mood or weather or occasion.

Scent of the day is Shalimar Ode a la Vanille-
It’s a rainy day here but the temperatures are still decent for November.

Caron’s L’Impacte de Pour un Homme. Soft lavender vanilla.

I’m going to struggle on Friday. My fragrances tend to belong in the rather expensive but bought on ebay category, or rather expensive and bought at full price. Still ,some may qualify.

I guess the term “cheap thrill” is subjective. What is expensive to one person may be inexpensive to another. 🙂

You smell lovely, thanks for introducing me to that Caron! And I’ve got similar problems to yours, plus I also cover the “expensive and bought on a whim” category. But I should have a few options.

I’m very good at those too, actually. But the crowning glory of my perfumista career is successful blind buys!

What category are you going to put No.22 in? 😉

I think I may rely on the cheapest of thrills–swaps. The practice depends on the generosity of this community, which is great.

Apparently Shalimar’s a popular one today. I’m wearing the EDP and always say Shalimar’s my favorite, but don’t seem to wear it much. Funny, though, that every time I do wear it, I’m completely awed and fall in love all over again. What a wonderful feeling… which I’ll probably top off with a few dabs from my new vintage parfum bottle when I get home.

      You smell divine!
I feel sometimes even though Shalimar is such a popular well known perfume, I don’t smell it often on other people. The streets smell more fruity Oriental instead of Shalimar style Oriental. So one may feel very unique when I wearing it. Just my opinion.

It’s the first time I’ve thought about it, but I’ve never actually smelled equivalent concentrations in both modern and vintage formulas. You hear about vintage almost always being better, but honestly, I have a bottle of vintage parfum and a bottle of the modern EDP, and I wear and love both.

Hello am in Iris Poudre today – it is lovely and I adore iris generally but I am trying to decide how ‘me’ it is. In any event it does smell good – does the fact that it comes as a mini count as a cheap thrill?

Less rooty and more creamy with a bit of aldehydes. Smells to me like a really nice cold-cream. Very feminine. I also like it and have a travel size, though haven’t worn in much recently. It’s worth sampling if you like iris.

SOTD is Visa by Robert Piguet from a sample… Pretty fruitchouili. I’m surprised by how much I like this one. However, it’s a cloudy dreary day in New England and Visa is a good antedote for the weather. I wanted something warm and this one certainly is that with it’s sweet peachy/patch vibe.

I’ve had a couple of recent decants with wonky sprayers too – I managed to fix one of them by unscrewing the top a tiny bit (whereupon it let out a tiny pshhh sound) and then tightening again. Maybe they’re developing vapor-lock during shipping?

The perfume gods have smiled upon me, as has a very generous NSTer, and I am enjoying Amouage Fate Woman this morning. Warm, lovely and confidence-boosting on a day of another interview.

Also, Robin, you absolutely get an enablers pin from me for Bois d’Iris. I remember reading your review back in 2009 and going to visit it at Bergdorf’s soon after. It took me five years to make the plunge, but it was entirely because of you. Thank you!

SotD is Cuir de Lancome. It was suggested to me as a gentle intro to leathers when I mentioned that I struggled with Chanel’s Cuir de Russie. It took a couple of tries, but I’m starting to get the appeal of leather. In Cuir de Lancome, it’s very womanly.

I had that thought too late, but it seems to have a low sillage so you could get away with it…

Then again, booze is allowed (and sometimes encouraged) at my work, so that’s not much of a worry for me.

I think you could pull it off. (As long as you don’t work in a church or school.) Not only is the sillage low, the lasting power isn’t very good. I think you’d smell boozy when you applied it, but by the time you got to work it would be more of a sweet, cozy comfort scent. After about six hours you may as well have worn Coty’s Wild Musk. Not that that’s a bad thing. 🙂

It looks like Friday’s perfume has been decided for me. The only ‘cheap’ perfume that I have the original Lolita Lempicka. I have to agree with Ms. Sanchez that the bottle is darling but the perfume is great.

Right now, I am wearing Cuir de Russie in EDT. This is the first perfume that made me fall down the rabbit hole about 6 years ago.

I’m wearing Le Labo’s new “tea” fragrance – it’s more dry wood and gentle spices on me, although I do detect some tea when looking for it. Nice enough, but no need get a bottle, fortunately.

I was a bit underwhelmed by it too but it reminds me of their Laurier 62 candle which is one of my favorites. I think I associate the scent to the candle so much that it just felt a little off when I was testing it.

Today I’m in Bottega Veneta. Trying to make an effort to use more from my full bottles lately.

I’m traveling to attend a wedding this weekend and having fun thinking of what to wear. Most of my usuals are pretty quiet, but it will be a long, fun, chilly night so I’m thinking of bringing samples of the big guns–something like Portrait of a Lady, or Coromandel!

Continuing Cheap Thrill week! Today’s SOTD = Kenzo Flower. I found my 1 oz edp at Marshall’s for $30, but I’m sure you can find it online for cheaper.

To me, Kenzo Flower exemplifies the concept that perfume is olfactory art. Despite never smelling anything like it, and thereby avoiding unwarranted emotional associations, this perfume makes me feel happy. 🙂

If you’d like to know more, BdJ did a glowing review of Kenzo Flower.

Also, this perfume is potent; I limit myself to 2 sprays for the office (one on my chest, under clothes, the other on a wrist which dab on the other wrist and then both sides of my neck, behind the ears).

I just got Flower at Marshall’s too! I remember dismissing it as too powdery the first time I tried it, but liked it more when I revisited a year or so ago. And I was in the mood to buy something, so I did. And Victoria’s review was a factor as well.

Wearing my favorite fruity floral done right, Il Bacio. Created in 1993, I wore this on special occasions during my almost 20 year perfume hiatus. At that time it was the only perfume I owned and seemed like a ridiculous indulgence with two small children and an even smaller household budget. It is still recognizably itself though reformulation has diluted some of the spice. I have a big bottle which I purchased for under $30 and the unanswered question is why Borghese persists in giving this away so cheaply since it is vastly superior to just about anything else out there in this category.

I put on a little Le Labo The Noir 29 today. I did smell the tea initially, and then I noticed some fruit (the fig, I am thinking). Sometimes fig doesn’t work for me and I wasn’t too crazy about it here – it was sweet and a bit overripe or something. Now it has settled down and the tea seems to be re-appearing, along with some of the other notes.

APOM Pour Femme left on my jacket from late last night unfortunately. It reminds me of thick, sweet, almond-paste scented nail polish if such thing exists. I scrubbed it off but thar she lingers and rather strongly at that. Yikes.

And otherwise Ostara which is rather narciss-y and crisp and dry musky. Very different from what I’d usually wear. At one point I wasn’t sure if I was smelling my papers at work or the frag. NIce but not near further purchase worthy unless magic happens.

Cristalle! The usual performance: shop 1 had Cristalle Vert only, shop 2 had Cristalle EDP and EDT but no sample bottle for either, shop 3:Cristalle has been discontinued. No Bulgari tea scents…but thanks for the suggestion Austenfan.
I had to go and have a coffee and ask myself ‘What would Annikky and ElisaP do in this situation? The answer came in a flash…leave this hick town and move somewhere where perfume vending machines and spray stations can be found on every corner. So I packed my bags and flew to NY…no, that’s right, I had to pick my so up from school at 3. I settled for Plan B…..Cristalle EDP unsniffed. Talk about exciting….I unwrapped the box while standing at the counter and then sprayed both myself and the shop assistant.
She loved it. I loved it! we all loved it…even the parking warden loved it ( made that up ).
So…double pins to the girl gang! And thanks. Why does the name Cristalle make me think of Sarah Moon photos?

Ultimately you’ll have to determine whether or not you trust them to fulfill a request. However, if you do make a perfume request I would suggest being ultra-specific.

You could try giving them a list (preferably something they can find on their phones), and tell them to just give the list to the SAs.

The list should have brand, name, concentration (EDP, EDT, etc), size (if they offer more than one), and even a picture (especially if it can be confused with something else, such as flankers). If you know where you’re friends will be, you might even tell them exactly which shop to go to.

For my birthday I gave my brother a comprehensive list, and he still told me the perfume shopping was overwhelming (mainly because of ignorant and/or pushy SAs). So be sure to thank them for the effort, regardless of what they bring you.

          Good luck!

Why would anyone fly to Aus to buy perfume at a Chanel boutique? Imported cosmetics & perfume suffer terribly under the Aussie dollar. (Unless you live in NZ in which case anything goes I suppose.)

I can’t remember having seen Charlie anywhere though so no worries.

When an SA comes close to me when I’m in the zone of spraying and sniffing and asks me “How can I help you?” (or some derivation of this), I would slowly turn my entire body to face her, lock my eyeballs on hers, smile, then say “Thank you. I will let you know when I need help.” Many simply back away…

I believe that having a bottle of CKOne in the fridge is a necessity of life. Whenever I am feeling over heated emotionally and/or physically I pull my perfectly chilled bottle out of the fridge and spray the nape of my neck and the inside of my wrists. Blissful, clean, cooling. Ahhhhhh……..

SOTD is 31 Rue Cambon from my too-big collection of unsatisfying 1 ml samples. I resolved to work my way through them all, but it’s so hard to get enough scent on me from those tiny bottles. Rue Cambon is still with me, close to the skin, but I want it to be larger. I’ll see how long I can stay away from spray sizes.

POTL is quite a blast from the past, eh?
Seems like nobody has mentioned this stuff in about 8 years! I must say, I’m not loving this today. I enjoyed it for about an hour but now I’m finding it tiresome.

Gidday, all. Ages ago I bought some Amande Persane dry body oil at the Roger et Gallet shop on Rue St Honore. It’s one of those scents that starts with a roar and ends with a whisper not too long afterwards, so mostly I wear it to bed after my evening shower. It’s quick, it smells lovely for about the same length of time that I’m awake, it doesn’t project too far. This morning after my shower, I just couldn’t be bothered with the whole skin-nourishing-body-lotion performance, so I used the oil, and then Rahat Loukoum, and the one seems to amplify the almondness of the other. I think I smell gorgeous. More than twice as gorgeous than either alone makes me smell. And feel. And that is really quite a claim, because either alone is up towards the top of the scale for cheering me up. So yay! I’m bravely starting to layer, and I’m getting the hang of it.

There’s a new Roger et Gallet at The Bay, so I might have to see whether they stock the Amande Persane.

I have to say that I didn’t go,”Oh stop! That’s the very thing for me!” when the delightful shop assistant was showing me things. It was more that I had my box of carnation soap, I was in Paris, in a mood to buy memories, you know how it can be! At first I was a little disappointed, but then, it’s hard for anything to live up to to the carnation soap. However, the oil has grown on me over time, and now I love it in the circumstances I’ve described.

By the way, thank you for telling me about the R&G shop in San Francisco. I shall definitely visit it next year– I need more of the soap!

I rode the remnants of last night’s Tobacco Vanille for most of the morning, then went for Ambre Sultan. It is rainy and grey here, but I don’t mind because I smell great 😉

SOTD is Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue which I love but think I over-did on my upper half and then donned a scarf so I’m getting to smell lots of it today. Maybe more than I need, but better this than something regrettably big.
I’m cultivating an interest in scarves, recently vintage silk ones, since I don’t accessorize much. And also because I need to spend more time on eBay; -)

I’m not very skilled bidder yet so I’ve lost out on some nice bargains. Practice! But I’ve underappreciated scarves as wearable art.

          I’ve been happy with sniping.

With these caveats: I only snipe things that I really, really, really want. And I only put in the absolute maximum that I am willing to pay, which to my mind is like submitting my best offer through a sealed envelope. I’ve lost a snipe or two, but have been successful more often than not.

One of my roommates teases me because I’m a teeny, tiny bit obsessed with vintage silk scarves, especially Liberty of London. Are there any in particular you’re developing a fondness for?

The Liberty of London *are* nice and have been watching a few. I’m not looking for particular brands, necessarily. It’s more about print and colors and if it happens to be a luxury brand and a good deal, even better. My favorite acquisition, so far, is a black silk “butterfly” poncho(like a huge silk scarf with hole for head and arms)w/floral /polka dot design by Lanvin. It was pretty much a steal.

I’m wearing Bottega Veneta today. I tend to neglect this one for some reason.. I think sometimes it’s because while it lasts fairly well, it wears very close on me, and I have to get wrist-to-nose to smell it. I love her but wish she were just a little bit less well-mannered, I guess.

I wanted to sample VC&A Ambre Imperial today, but the sample vial slipped out of my fingers and emptied onto my jeans. So I took them off to sniff it (I know, I know, what perfumistas go through to smell something new). It’s heavy on tonka, and sweeter than I had imagined. Waiting for more amber now.

Started the day in Gucci Guilty Black. The best of the Guilty line imo. On my lunch break, I went and sprayed Giorgio Red on one hand and Kenzo Flower on the other. I used to love and wear Red, but wow, it smells very different and not appealing anymore. Kenzo Flower just smelled like Chantilly dusting powder on me. so, now I pretty much just smell stinky.

    SOTD = Indult Tihota

I am continuing my vanilla week. I would consider this a reference Vanilla with which to compare other vanillas. It is a full, rich, creamy and VERY vanilla. According to Fragrantica, it only has vanilla and musk and paradoxically, its simplicity makes it complex.

Last Saturday we drove to Charlotte to see what Neiman Marcus had in the way of non-mainstreams. Van Cleef & Arpel, Maison Francis Kurdsjian, Armani Prive, besides Tom Ford and Jo Malone.

Even better: Hermes boutique just outside NM’s doors in the mall (Southpark). Got a few samples from each.

Oh, and Dyptique at Nordstrom there (not in Raleigh).

It’s been raining here for 10 days, and in a hotel that means smokers stay indoors and smoke in their non-smoking rooms. So being halfway to bronchitis again I’ve been a little perfume shy. Trying Osmanthe Yunnan. Fleeting indeed, but safe. And beautiful.

Kanuka, I’m reading Edwin + Matilda and loving it.

I’m haunted by Chanel No. 5 this afternoon. I keep smelling something like it as I go about my day, but I’m not wearing it.

Could it be the remains of Infusion d’Iris from last night plus the dab of Hiris this morning? Doesn’t seem likely. Or maybe it’s the cold wind that is blowing . . . and playing tricks on my nose.

That often happens to me at home – perhaps it got sprayed on some pillows/curtains? Or perhaps something you frequently come into contact with. For instance, my quilts perpetually smell like my nightime perfumes.

Went to a dinner theater Christmas show today, with my parents and the “Young at Heart” senior group from the church where I grew up… they needed one more person to get the group discount, and even though I am fundamentally opposed to Christmas stuff before Thanksgiving, well. I went. 🙂

    Had a great time.

Meant to wear Iris Poudre, but picked up the wrong decant and spritzed Idylle edt instead. (That Iris Poudre decant is nearly dead anyway – maybe I should refill it from the bottle I got for my birthday last January and just sling it in my purse for emergencies.)

Perfume emergencies are my favorite emergencies. It is usually easy to remedy such a situation, and the tricksy ones are often the most fun to work out. 😉
