Wednesday scent of the day 10/28

Posted by Robin on 28 October 2015 200 Comments

Jun Takahashi Undercover Hamburger Queen Sweatshirt

Hump Day again! If you have a free moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing Comme des Garçons Vettiveru.

Reminder: this Friday, 10/30, will be the Halloween Special: wear the fragrance that would match your fantasy Halloween costume (or your real Halloween costume, or one you've worn in the past).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is the Jun Takahashi Undercover Hamburger Queen Sweatshirt, £110 at Dover Street Market.

It’s Serge Lutens Chergui for me. I saw it on the comments yesterday and made up my mind. Hopefully it adds another layer of warmth to my already six. Thanks for the decant, jjlook.

Second day in a row with Chergui for me today. I applied more than I had yesterday. I think that makes an improvement. It is quite warm and lovely for the rainy, gray day we have here (remnants of Hurricane Patricia). Not sure yet if I need the FB, but I’ll will definitely need a larger decant.

I was thinking about vintage Samsara to liven up my organic chemistry lab.

I’ve been reading The All-Pervading Melodious Drumbeat, a recounting of the life of a Buddist “saint” (I use quotes not to mock but because that’s a good corollary) and it mentions Samsara. It’s kind of hilarious that Guerlain would name a fragrance as freedom from the cycle of death in rebirth is one of the missions of Buddism, if I understand correctly. Very interesting stuff.

They did not think the name through, that’s for sure. But vintage Samsara is fantastic.

I disagree- see straight from the Guerlain website; Samsara signifies “eternal rebirth” in Sanskrit and is part of the “wheel of life”, a religious reference of Tibetan Buddhism. It evokes the perpetual voyage from one existence to the next, an invitation to serenity and harmony.

I think that’s a beautiful description and if your are a practicing Buddhist we are all stuck in samsara 😉

That is a beautiful description and makes me want to spray Samsara over the Incense I used earlier. Thanks.

          28 October 2015 at 5:34 pm

I’m sure Guerlain wants to put a nice spin on it but the whole point of samsara is that it’s an endless loop of suffering, a non-stop cycle of birth and death and reincarnation into misery, and the goal of Buddhism is to eventually escape this cycle. My husband is a Buddhist and trust me: it’s not a nice name for a perfume.

I had an orange blossom craving this morning as well, despite the cool weather and waking up in the pitch black nowadays. Drained my decant of California Reverie…. Guess I am “California dreamin’ on such a winter’s day….” Well sort of. I am in California, and it isn’t quite winter… but the Mamas and the Papas got the mood right!

Spritzed Bois des Iles on my winter infinity scarf (which ends up being worn with everything) and it’s still there today….looooovely. This is going to be one of my main cold-weather scents – I can feel it.

Question for those of you that might know – how would you compare Champagne de Bois to Bois des Iles? I’m about to look up some bloggers’ takes, but I’d be curious to know what all of you think as well. If it’s a dupe I can live with, my need for a bottle of BdI may diminish…

Funny – CdB was my gateway to major sandalwood, and BdI. There is a lot similar between them, but also a lot different. I only wear a tiny dab of CdB when I wear it b/c it is more robust and has tons of projection. I might wear a little bit more of BdI…. In any case, they both have a very rich sandalwood, but CdB is rougher with other woods and spices and a hefty musk to tie it together. It’s really gorgeous, complex, and well designed. BdI is as you already know, so I won’t bother explaining. But…. just imagine you have some lovely unfinished wood which is the CdB, and the polished oil rubbed of the same is BdI.

Mals86 wrote a nice thing about this question, so def make that one of the stops for a fuller review! http://themuseinwoodenshoes.com/fragrance-throwdown-chanel-bois-des-iles-vs-sonoma-scent-studio-champagne-de-bois/

Meanwhile, for my two cents, I love Champagne de Bois, as well as a number of other sandalwood scents (Santal Massoia, Nirvana Black), but I actually do not care for Bois des Iles (I KNOW. I’m sorry! I’m only mentioning it for SCIENCE.) So to me the differences are fairly significant. I can’t recall it clearly, so maybe someone else can weigh in on this, but I almost wonder if Tam Dao is closer?

I’m beginning to think my not having that experience is due to my bottle being the EDP and not the EDT. What do you think?

        • mals86 says:
          28 October 2015 at 1:09 pm

Oh, thanks! BdI is indeed more polished. Both lovely, though.

You’re allowed to dislike whatever you choose, and science is indeed the best reason to mention everything.

I actually have a bottle of Tam Dao EDP already, but hadn’t experienced it as being close to Bois des Iles, but maybe that’s because it’s the EDP and not the EDT? Not sure. I know I love both, but maybe Champagne de Bois bridges the gap between them and I’ll just have to end up with all three….

CdB is REALLY STRONG! With eleventy million exclamation points. Really, really strong. BdI is not quite so knock-your-nose-out. Both sandalwood heavy. I don’t think you need both, but I am not a huge sandalwood fan.

Recently, The WSJ had an article on scarves. I was too busy to read the text of it but managed to look at the pictures with captions, in particular, the level of scarf-tying competency one has to have to achieve THE Look. BTW, the article was gender balanced for the subject: 3 examples of women, 1 androgynous and 2 obviously male pics. Anyway, the truth of the matter is that while I like the idea of wearing scarves (and I wear them), I can be a star in the Worst Scarf Tie-ers in America series.

Well, my dentist appointment has been cancelled. Part of me is happy because I don’t have to deal with crazy drivers and it’s wet and rainy. When it’s wet and rainy people seem to get even stupider when driving. I’m dealing with the extreme dry down of the Lyric body products. I think it’s a vintage Bal day. Still bummed that when I woke up this morning the bottle of vintage Amouage Gold I was bidding on slipped away.

Still rainy and dreary here as well but I can’t complain, even though it’s still hot and humid. Waiting rather impatiently for some real fall weather! Wanting to bust out my boots and scarves which rarely see the light of day in this state. Maybe in another month or so…I am envious of all you folks enjoying brisk weather and warming perfumes!

Wow, all that and no fall clothes. You need to check your horoscope. (This was the standard reply in an ofc I once worked in, whenever anyone had bad luck.)

Wearing SL Santal Blanc again. Tried layering AG Nuits d’Hadrien over it, but just a meh combination. To be corrected after laundry & shower.

How ridiculous! I hope it is all sorted out soon. I’ve been having a lousy time at work lately too and you would not believe how much it comforts me to remember that when I get home I can put on some perfume! (Well, all of YOU would believe it probably.) Beauty in one’s life makes so many bad things bearable.

So true! But to be fair, I have a very low tolerance for inefficiency which to seems synonymous with stupidity, at least in my mind. Can No One think outside ANY box these day? Is every system of human management based on inflexible algorithms?! It seems the world is run with complete and total apathy these days. Sorry, I’ll stop ranting now but, GEEZ LOUISE! Drives me nuts 🙂

Started off in Miller Harris La Pluie from a small sample, which is fast becoming a favourite gentle scent. Then popped into Fenwicks on the way back from a meeting and tried a good few spritzes of Amyris pour Femme, which is wafting nicely and feels very happy.

It feels like the gentlest whisper of ylang ylang breeze while lying on a beach somewhere tropical or maybe even Southern European on a slightly overcast day staring at summery waves – calm but nothing too shimmering. I think it might be my perfect gentle smell – avoids powdery or talcy but at least as comforting. Definitely worth trying a spray if ever you see it and you are at all partial to gentle ylang ylang.

I find it so comforting somehow! Maybe because it feels no-nonsense? Tragically I opened my “B” drawer last week to discover half of my mini had spilled. I wish you all had been there to hear the actual words I actually said: “Oh no! My precious!” Haha. Total gollum moment. Needless to say I smeared the contents of that drawer all over my arms and smelled great for the rest of the day.

I remember I really liked this and was considering a FB at one time. I’d be really interested to know where they got that name, “pohadka” is identical with a Czech word that translates as “fairytale” 🙂

I think that’s it. It also has a subtitle, “Ainsi la nuit,” which refers to a piece of music, if I understand correctly. Here’s what the website has to say:

“POHADKA is a sketch of a beautiful memory from my childhood.

“A daring scent that reflects a breathtaking landscape over the Lavaux vineyard terraces. A view over the Geneva Lake at an autumn night.

“The Immortelle represents the sunburnt walls and stones in the vineyard. The secretive Vanilla and the leathery Tobacco portray the smoky twilight. The fresh cut vines get alive through the grassy Shiso leaves and a hint of Jasmine…

“This perfume is named after the magnificent cello sonata from Leos Janacek, that I love. The word Pohádka means A Tale in Czech.

        “Independent, Delight, Sharp

        “Ainsi la Nuit”

Went into the city today to see the Treasure Ships exhibition at the art gallery- thoroughly enjoyed it 🙂
Went for a wander through the dept stores to try some new fumes. Thought the new Prada range were meh. TF noir femme has a nice drydown. There’s an Armani Prive one I tried on paper- Ambre Eccentrico. Yum! Ambre, tonka, patchouli, cinnamon and prunol are the notes listed on Frangratica. It’s like Jungle L’Elephant but a bit smoother and creamier and not quite as loud. If I didnt already have the elephant it would be a serious consideration. Obviously it’s a ‘tad’ pricier but if anyone would prefer elephant’s slightly less obnoxious twin I recommend trying it.

After my dentist appointment I stopped at Ulta and tried Kenzo Flower Elixer. which I did find comfortable and more me. Honestly though, how many vanilla type scents do I need? Wearing Bottega Venetta today. Just got a sample, wore it yesterday and today. I love the fragrance at the beginning, wish that would last longer. I think I may have scent eating skin, because I have to huff my arm to smell it. I do like it a lot, maybe if I could spray liberally I’d love it, but I’m in work, so, not a good idea. Plus, my new boss told me she does not like rose scents, so I’m being careful with my fragrances. It’s kind of funny, she is a little younger than me, and whatever she is wearing is Super Sweet, and she wears a lot of it.

Hello, hello. Back from The Eye Thing, and inspired by Platinum14, about to wear Jean Louis Scherrer. Thank you all for your kindness on Tuesday, by the way: after the op, I could see comments and make out odd words, but I couldn’t read! My brain told me it would all be OK, but it was nevertheless easily the most terrifying twelve hours of my life! So, now I have perfect distance vision again, but putting on make up is a whole exciting new world of blur (I thought that WAS my eye…). The dear one watched on CCTV, and reports that it was “fascinating, absolutely fascinating”. Anyway, a single scentless day made me reach for heavy hitters: Epic yesterday, and today the green powerhouse of JLS. And it’s so nice to have temporary reading glasses now and be able to read what you’re all wearing! You all smell gorgeous.

Thank you, Gaynor. You know, I’ve always thought in terms of light and shadow and shades of colours, but all these are more intense and vibrant now, and with that, oddly, my sense of smell, though of course, that may be my imagination, and even if it’s a real effect, it may not last. Today and yesterday, however, fewer sprays worked just as well as twice the number did last week.

Anything’s possible! I’m no expert on the brain, but I’ve a read a lot that suggests it’s more amazing and plastic than we yet know.

Thank you. It’s so ni’ve yo be thought of! I have some issues with flicker in my peripheral vision, but it will settle, apparently. I’m very well, bounding and bouncing, but not working because my computer glasses aren’t ready yet, so I’m on sick leave…it’s a total blobbing break for me!

Therapeutic scent–you’re right. Should we develop a category of preventative scents too?

So glad things are going well! It’s terrifying to accomplish the simplest of tasks with only one eye. Three cheers for binocular vision! 😀

Cold and blustery here today with rain off and on, so I decided that I needed some Divine by Divine. Definitely a big floral, and it is brightening up the day for me!

Totally inappropriate for the cold and grey weather, but I’m wearing Hermes Eau des Merveilles and smell like the sea 😀 I grabbed the bottle without even thinking what I was spraying. I do like it though!

I actually like EdM a little better in cooler weather, so I think you made a great choice!

Experimental day for me today with Habanita layered with Encre Noir,
i like Habanita but its all vanilla and powder on me, so the Encre Noir makes it much more balanced.

Checking in super late, as we had a busy day in Sevilla. But for the record, wore A la Nuit for dinner.
