Thursday scent of the day 10/8

Posted by Robin on 8 October 2015 143 Comments

octopus

Happy World Octopus Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Frederic Malle Carnal Flower, from perfumer Dominique Ropion.

Reminder: tomorrow, 9 October, wear a fragrance from perfumer Dominique Ropion, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image is Sea animals-3-024 - octopus vulgaris, octopus de filippi, octopus salutii, sepia orbignyana, sepiola rondeletii, 3 by artvintage1800s.etsy.com at flickr; public domain.

I love Carnal Flower, it’s one of my 2 options for tomorrow. I’m wearing La Promesse de l’Aube (MDCI), which has a certain wistfulness perfect for this time of year.

Just took my quick morning walk, and it’s lovely out, and yes, wistful…was realizing how soon it would be that I’d have to “talk myself” into a quick morning walk 🙂

My dog passed away this summer, and she was the best reason to go out for a walk. So I need to do a lot of persuading myself as well these days.

I’m in vintage Salvador Dali, one of those kitchen-sink orientals so beloved in the back half of the eighties. I wore it obsessively then: I thought it was the most amazing thing in the world. And that bottle!

I’ve got a mini of that one, I used to like it too. And I agree, the bottle is a winner.

I had a mini nose bottle in the late 80s! I used to love wearing that – but I hardly remember how it smells. I felt so “European”!!!

Am at airport for flight to east coast for my mothers’ 94th birthday. All I have packed is my Tauerville Incense Flash roller. I had to get up so early I didn’t have time to grab anything for tomorrow. So it’s flash till I get back home.

Hmmm… I looked through the list and don’t have any Ropion scents – although I might have a Burberry Brit London sample kicking around. Maybe it’s time to try it. I do wish I had LM Cologne Indelebile – I think it’s lovely.

I am in Fragonard Jasmin Perle de The. (can’t get accents properly on my keyboard) A gift from my sister when she was in So. of France. I’ve never been a huge green tea scent fan, but this is quite lovely during this warm weather. I’ll put it aside soon for next spring/summer. Between this and samples of Teazzurra, I may become a tea-scent lover!

Is the patchouli very camphorous like in Coromandel?

That really made me think differently about it which is always interesting – I would describe it as a sort of dry but ‘loamy’ patchouli if that makes sense. It does smell of earthy and I guess damp autumn leaves or the beach on a grey windswept day, but with a dry feeling overlaying it. So I suspect not especially camphorous but it shares a wearable elegance with Coromandel (of course Coromandel is rather more incredible) – this is also more restrained and feels very ‘french’ to me. Not sure if that helps!

hmm… ‘wet-earth’ patchouli, then. That sounds very calm indeed. Without benzoin and incense, I would find straight patchouli at the concentration of Coromandel overwhelming — I guess I get what you mean by wearable elegance.

on me, mistral patchouli is very much a grapefruit perfume, middling-dark with some patchouli facets perhaps but still genuinely grapefruit-centric cologne throughout its duration. I haven’t smelled Coromandel for awhile but from what I recall it is rather heavy on the patchouli and thus not similar to MP. I’m a huge patchouli fan so I felt rather cheated by it, but I think someone who doesn’t like patch that might think it’s just the right amount!

I’m back! A fortnight in the tropical heat and humid nightmare made me go scent-free for a long time. Everything I sprayed on seemed to evaporate within an hour!

I cannot think of a perfume to match octopus at the moment….

On another note, I stumbled upon Vetiver Extraordinaire yesterday. I have been meaning to find a vetiver fragrance with tenacity, surprise, and a bit of sillage.

Here are some which I have more or less sniffed, but not put to test: FM Vetiver Extraordinaire, Guerlain Vetiver, Chanel Sycomore, and Hermes Vetiver Tonka. Which one would you all recommend? Any other suggestions are appreciated 🙂

By ‘surprise’, I mean when a fragrance shifts as in one smells the warm spicyness of Egoiste initially and later the juicy Damask rose and ambrette before moving finally to the creamy sandalwood.

My favourites of these are Chanel Sycomore and Guerlain Vetiver, although I think the first is more interesting – the Guerlain is what I think of as vetiver-vetiver scent. Vetiver Tonka is lovely, but not tenacious. Vetiver Extraordinaire is a great-quality vetiver, but somehow leaves me cold. Or at least colder than some others.

I’m sure many will recommend Encre Noire and with good reason, it’s complex and beautiful and cheaper than Sycomore. I personally also love TDC Sel de Vetiver, a “Normandian-beach-in-November” vetiver, and Une Nuit a Bali Mr Vetiver. The latter is probably not what you’re looking for, as it mostly consists of vetiver and cardamom, no surprises. But I think it’s lovely and that’s why I’m mentioning it anyway 🙂

Hmm…I am half-hearted about Nuit a Bali Mr Vetiver because of the geranium, but Sel de Vetiver sounds promising with the whole salt note and vetiver — they would go together very well.

Added to my sniff list. Thank you, Annikky!

It’s such a pity that Goutal discontinued their Vetiver, which was a Vetiver with attitude. Who knows you might still find bottles online.
Maître Parfumeur et Gantier has 2 very good vetiver scents: Racine, which is an elegant, restrained vetiver, and Route du Vétiver which is very powerful, especially in the opening. Lots of damp earth.
I personally really like the nutty rendition of the note that Etro Vetiver provides.
If you would like to try a no holds barred powerful vetiver the LesNez Turtle Vetivers are a good option. They are currently sold out, but I hope more will be made.
Kenzo Air is a good mainstream vetiver. And though I’ve never tried it myself the Givenchy Vetiver is supposedly excellent.

Yikes, I had not realized that the current AG Vetiver of the Les Colognes series was different from the original. Now I’m noticing that Luckyscent describes it as “inspired by the perfume Vétiver.”

It does appear that one can still find the real Vétiver online at reasonable prices.

I just happen to be sampling Oakmoss by AbdesSalaam Attar (thank you Pixel!!) this morning… I am only about an hour in, but I love it! Oakmoss grounds this one, but in many ways it is primarily a vetiver scent. There’s hay and patchouli (light patchouli, not very dirty… Like dried patchouli branches), and even a hint of leather, and sandalwood… Sorry, this review is all over the place… That’s what I get for chiming in before I really get a scent. But it is lovely!

SOTD a dip into my very precious and dwindling small decant of Chanel Sycomore. I struggle so much with wanting an FB of this since I already have Encre Noire, and they are indeed so similar. I’m just thinking though that Chanel would go up 100% in my esteem if they released an extrait version of Sycomore!!!

I thought I would wear Portrait of a Lady for the Ropion week, but went with Lyric in the end. It’s one of my favourite roses (and my favourite Amouage), possibly because it’s not very rosy on me – it’s more about spices and creamy woods with a hint of dry rose. And that suits me very well.

        I… um…

have three bottles. All from ebay, all partially used. Two are edp and only one is “cologne spray” and has a date of 1989 on it so that is the only one I know is older. I don’t know about the other two, but they are quite similar, no great divergence from the old one.

Arrived in Rochester yesterday for my sister’s 60th birthday party Saturday. She is throwing a murder mystery party, set as if it was her wedding (she never married). The girl just loves party planning.

So last night I showed her my Bois d’Argent, remarking that I wear several sprites as it’s pretty mild. Then this morning I somehow got my signals crossed and sprayed 5 sprays of Eau des Baux. I feel like I reek. But someone willingly sat next to me in Starbucks, so I guess it can’t be all that bad. 🙂

SOTD: Slumberhouse Norne. It is an extremely smoky fragrance, not very easy to wear. It feels ancient in a strange way, mud-coloured juice and all. Like a potion from the middle ages, strong but not unpleasant in the drydown. After the very strong, almost overpowering smoke in the top (was very, very close to scrub this one off), the drydown is more multifaceted. I get smoke, pine and some faint incense. Glad I didn’t scrub it, afterall.

I very much like this one and am tempted to get a FB. I’ve worn this a few times and the leather is very raw smelling. Cuir de Russie’s leather is very polished and even a bit powdery and Cuir de Lancome is very saddle-soap-ish to me, but the leather in Anubis is simply raw and almost dirty smelling, but I mean that in the best way possible. The rose in it is a great compliment to the leather as well. If you’re a leather fan, I’d say this is a definite must-try.

Dug to the dark corner of the perfume cabinet, and came up with Guerlain Idylle EDT today. This was a bit of an ill-advised blind buy when I saw it at Winners, but though I rarely wear it, I do like it well enough when I do. No fireworks, but a pretty little tune.

Like the Octopus Day images. It’s unseasonably warm here today and we’re having some landscaping done on the townhouse grounds (re-working of rock bed areas, new shrubs, adding different types of decorative grasses &perennials, placement of a few boulders) and I just felt like wearing something floral, so I am in Frapin Esprit de Fleurs, which is light, but it lasts well on me.

Friday! Eggzellent! It’s cold at the moment, but my daft weather App is promising the high temperature will be 20 today. I’m choosing not to believe the App because I want to wear the enveloping, assertive spiciness of Jungle l’Elephant, and though I adore it, it does rather trumpet (sorry!) its presence in the warmth.

I love all your perfumes today. Such fun to hear and think them over! NST is my gentle start to the day, you know: I prop myself up on my pillows in the dark, drink my litre of water –erk!– and read your choices with curiosity, admiration, and sometimes a little envy, then, nicely grounded in good thoughts, I beetle off to make a pot of tea and start breakfast, which I had better do right now. Be well and safe, everyone.

It’s warm and sunny here on Throwback Thursday and my perfect scent to match the day is Nina Ricci Bigarade, my very favorite orange scent of all time. Released in the early 1970’s for only a few short years, it’s what initially brought me to perfume websites and ebay, where I was lucky to pick up a few full unused bottles. Billed as “the sexy French daytime” scent, the bitter orange is blended nicely with spices and a background of oakmoss, making it a great refresher for summer but also a wonderful transitional fragrance for fall. The vintage bottles I have have kept their scent beautifully, perhaps the spices and moss have helped maintain the orange and have also added a richness and complexity and depth not found in today’s light and citrussy fragrances. Were it not so scarce, it would definitely be my HG!

Now that’s an endorsement if ever I read one! How lovely Bigarade sounds, and how great that you have a good supply. I vaguely remember someone trying to sell me this perfume, but I was too young and silly to understand what I was being shown. I think I bought Vivre instead.

Oh, I was young and silly then, too, precisely why I bought it! I was a budding francophile, contemplated majoring in the language, was young and wanted to be ‘sexy,’ – and it was billed as the sexy young daytime French scent; I hadn’t a clue what the notes were – or even that perfume had ‘notes’! Yet it turned out to be a true love and when it was d/c just a couple of years later, the Marshall Field’s store in Chicago sold me all they had plus found what appeared to be the only existing bottle left in the warehouse of the American distributor of Ricci fragrances in NY, plus many samples that tided me over until I found more many years later in my first foray into the world of online perfume searches.

Wow! that really is true love! Power to your elbow, Laila!

I think I was so young and silly that I didn’t understand about “sexy” — didn’t have the confidence, or something. Looking back with my perfect 20-20 hindsight, I wish I’d just kicked up my heels and been a mass of dash, but I didn’t get to that until I was (almost) too old for it to count…no, it always counts, right?

It has definitely grown on me. In the past when I’ve smelled Mojave Ghost, I found it too sweet/fruity, but I didn’t mind today. I don’t find it groundbreaking, but it kept me happy and upbeat. It’s not on the “to purchase” list, however.

I have nothing that reminds me or smells of octopus, though I love to eat it–maybe I’ll go to the fish market this afternoon. I’m sampling Alaia today, and although it starts off on me as a watery floral, heavy on freesia, it turns into a headache-inducing white musk monster with a side of pepper. I might have to wash this off.

Reading and commenting, while putting off putting my small children to bed, they’ve gone a bit crazy, as they often do just before bedtime. This is such great escapism after a tiring day!
I tried out my new decant of Journey Woman this morning, soooo beautiful!, really perfect on a chilly bright and golden autumnal morning.
Journey’s faded to a whisper by late afternoon, and so resampling my new blind buy purchase of Safari. The silage is lovely, and i like it a lot more than i did yesterday evening. All i could smell was hyacinth yesterday, but it seems more nuanced today, tempered by something tea like?- maybe the herbal marigold.

Google helpfully showed me a picture of a nice looking orange handbag, so I helpfully clicked on it. The orange was ok, but there was a burgundy ostrich leather bag next to it, which was very nice looking, until I read the blurb and saw that I had, of course, picked out the real ostrich skin Birkin for a smooth $32,000.00.

Who are the people who actually live like that?

That hangbag costs more than the car I drive, a Toyota, and the car adorable hubby drives, an old Vibe which is really a Toyota, and the old Chevy farm pick up that is now full of hay, all put together.

I guess I should be flattered that Google thought I would even like to look at it. LOL!

I’m in lush smuggler’s soul, but really should’ve picked mitsouko or agent provocateur today – it’s been a raw, windy, cold autumn day with steel grey clouds, grim-faced Swedes, and a too-thin jacket. I could’ve done with some fruit and rose and spice!

I serendipitously discovered a sample of Alien Eau Extraordinaire, making it my sole Ropion scent, and I don’t think I’ve ever tried it. Let’s see how that goes tomorrow!

Getting back into my usual routine of reading NST over breakfast before heading off to work, and enjoying reading about what you are all wearing and contemplating what I might wear – one of the most important decisions of the day!

I’ve had a cold for the last week, and it seems to be finally clearing up. I had one horrible evening when I couldn’t smell anything at all – not even a hefty dose of Absolue Pour Le Soir, which is strong enough to strip paint.

I’m planning to go into work for a few hours, and am thinking of Chamade. Appropriate to our somewhat patchy spring and it should help clear my still foggy brain.

To pipe up with my $0.02–I just resniffed this one this weekend, and gosh it’s gorgeous. I see Kafkaesque’s review describes it as “rich, dark, molten” and I think this is really spot on, it’s incredibly well-blended, lush, and with a slightly boozy quality, even–but maybe that’s just another way of saying it smells both rich and somehow more liquid than other fragrances. I’ve also seen accounts that mention honey, cumin, leather, sweat–I won’t argue but the honey part makes it sound sweeter than it really is, and all the other references make it sound less refined than it really is. It’s potent but uber-elegant, IMO.

More words I agree with from Kafkaesque, for good measure: “absolutely luscious, heady, rich”; “a true oriental in the grand old style…superbly blended”; “definitely musky, yes, but not truly animalic or heavily skanky. It was lovely and approachable and, as time went by, damn seductive!” Ok I’m just going to go ahead and link to his review, before I talk myself into a bottle here 🙂

I find APLS a challenge. Sometimes it seems quite harsh and I wonder why I like it, other times it’s rich and lovely. I have a FB, because once I’d tried a decant, I didn’t want to be without it.

I was a little disturbed when a friend sniffed the bottle and recoiled with exclamations about cat pee. I don’t get that myself, but I can see what she means, so I wear it home rather than out and about. That works well, because my beloved finds it quite sweet.

Have you tried the solid version? Lush does the lightest concentration of their scents in that form, and I find it’s just the ticket for Lust. The spray is too much for me as well, whereas the solid’s so much more manageable, someone who smelled it on me recently described it as a “soft floral”!! V surprised to hear big brash Lust described as soft but there you have it!

SOTM is/was Cristalle EDT. It’s gorgeous, of course, but I wanted something not too long-lived because I’m expecting a bottle of Ivoire de Balmain to arrive today and, if I know me, I won’t be able to keep myself from ripping the package open and spraying immediately. Blind buy based on some posts on NST and over at BdJ – hope I’m not disappointed!

I started the day enjoying the remains of yesterday’s Ylang & Vanille. I love the base in the sweet/flowery Guerlains. But no scent this morning as I had a headache over night.

A PSA for anyone sensitive to food additives: In the US sulphur compounds have been making their way onto fresh fruit (whether organic or not) with increasing frequency, acting as a mold and fungus inhibitor. I ate a plum I thought was fine last night but woke up in the wee hours with a pounding head. I suspect the plum was treated with sulphur dioxide.

Thanks to inspiration from Laila (orange) and meridifay (Google), now I’m sniffing from my sample of Like This. If Like This had a color it would be the orange of falling autumn leaves. Google surprised me with a link an article entitled “If Tilda Swinton Were Your Girlfriend”, so Like This it is.
