Tuesday scent of the day 10/6

Posted by Robin on 6 October 2015 177 Comments

mad-hat-2

Happy Mad Hatter Day! What fragrance did you pick for the occasion?

I'm in What We Do In Paris Is Secret by A Lab on Fire, from perfumer Dominique Ropion.

Reminder: this Friday, 9 October, wear a fragrance from perfumer Dominique Ropion, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

That’s not me inappropriately oversharing by the way, it’s my scent of the day, by Etat Libre d’Orange – obviously.

To be fair, they have lost the second part of the name by now. Not that I personally had any issues with it.

I’m testing Slumberhouse Sådanne today, not intentionally matched with the mad hatter but it seems oddly appropriate for Mad Hatter Day. It sort of smells like Johnny Depp looks in that picture, and I mean that as a good thing – a colourful, odd and slightly scary combination of sugar and spice. I’d call it a dry gourmet fragrance. I don’t get much strawberry at all, more caramel and burned sugar. There is a woody dryness peeking through the sweetness, and I get spice (cloves, cinnamon?) faint as a whisper. The pink juice and the copy about strawberry made me expect something more sweet & girly, this is more interesting than I expected. Curious to see how it developes after a few hours.

You smell great. I really love Sadanne – but to me it is more roses and wine (that, or I always end up drinking wine when I wear it, so might just be an association)

Funny you should mention roses because this morning (24h after spraying Sådanne) all I get is roses and sandalwood in the drydown, amazing. The staying power of this fragrance is spectacular on my dry, perfume-eating skin. I enjoy the drydown so much, I actually woke up during the night thinking: wow, what is it that smells so good? And I don’t even like rose fragrances.

    SOTD = Guerlain Cuir Beluga

I’m playing hooky today. Well, not really :-). I have some personal things to attend to and it was just easier to take the day off since I have the days to take; however, I had a meeting last night and then again early this morning so yeah, work is encroaching on personal time but I love my job so no complaints!

Anyway, I haven’t worn this beauty in a while and oh how I love it so. There’s a chill in the air for which Cuir Beluga is perfect!

For this Friday’s challenge, I have a handful (heh, literally 5) to choose from and will participate accordingly.

Chilly foggy day here, SOTD=Rose Infernalle, to warm me up.

I like this scent much better when I am taking all my allergy meds, including the inhaler and the NasoCort. I can smell so much more of it, like I get the rose.

When I am not so well medicated all I get is part of the incense. I am very jealous of people who do not have any allergies…

It’s a rich purpley red, much bluer than the red of La Fille de Berlin. A kind soul sent me a nice decant of it, and at first I was not impressed (probably due to the state of my nose) but over the last few months it has grown on me. Today it is great, the rose goes on and on over woody incense and a hint of campfire. If this description appeals to you at all, it is well worth a sample…
I must admit, the color is so intense in the bottle, I hesitate to spray it around my lighter colored shirts and sweaters, but that is probably just me. I haven’t actually seen it stain anything red…

He wears a fragrance that smells like herbs (rosemary?) and patchouli, but wouldn’t tell me what it was. I have another coworker who sometimes wears Eau des Baux (at least I think that’s what it is) in pretty large quantities. Clearly no scent-free policy here!

Thank you! I really love this one. I remember when it came out and everyone was raving that it’s the most perfect autumn scent due to crisp nature of the lime in it. Lots of people say it smells like the perfect margarita – and it is. It seems like it would be a great summer scent because of that and I do like it in summer, but there’s something about that hefty dose of moss in it that makes it absolutely gorgeous and on point to wear on a chill autumn morning.

I am fascinated by your description. This one was a complete scrubber on me. It’s got to be a skin chemistry thing. Other people just love this perfume and on me it smells like being downwind from a garbage truck. I was so sad when it didn’t work for me. I have smelled it on other people and it’s completely different on them and I’d never know it was the same perfume. Strange how that is.

My son’s high school marching band show this year is an Alice in Wonderland theme – I just emailed the director to let him know it’s Mad Hatter Day. 🙂 Thanks for the heads-up!

SOTD is Alien, from one of the four or five spray samples I have scattered about. I don’t know where these keep coming from, and I don’t think I’d ever BUY a bottle of Alien, but I enjoy the occasional hit. It’s big and it’s weird, like a refugee from 80s perfumery.

It was very lovely to receive this, and it was next on my full bottle list, but 200ml + 30ml?!- i can’t imagine anyone getting through that much juice.. i asked my husband why he got the set, and of course it was much better value, and he used a £30 off voucher from Liberty. I have just re sprayed as i love the top notes so much, and really don’t need to worry about using this one up!

This scent feels very 80s despite the wet flower garden mash-up. I think it must be the aldehydes that take the bouquet, stems, and leaves up to 11 in volume. On Frangrantica, reviewers report smelling very different flowers in the top notes… I get red roses foremost, along with other hot house wonders, including carnation–which may be the spices…

Funnily enough, what I remember about the JdB adds is the woman is frequently smelling her own wrist… A truth in advertising moment!

JdB is great – unfortunately it is so closely associated in my head with my X that I can’t wear it – I put it on and it smells wonderful, and then in half an hour I am crying for no reason at all…. Happened half a dozen times and I gave my new bottle away….

Cool Picture! Is that Johnny Depp? Looks like him.
I found my bottle of Sensuous Noir hiding in the back of my perfume collection. I ended up draining the remaining drops I had left 🙁
I ended up mixing it with Black Orchid – which honestly smells quite nice together. I think both scents are appropriate for the fall weather we are having here in Texas during the morning.
So, my SOTD is Sensuous Noir – EL / Black Orchid – TF.

SOTD is Safari, which is also one of the five Ropion fragrances that I have. I was pleased to realize that I had enough to wear during the rest of my work plus Saturday, since I wore Cabaret yesterday. However, I have doubts about Jungle L’Elephant, which is one of the five. It is supposed to be back in the 90s this week, and for me Jungle L’Elephant is only a cold weather scent.

I definitely have the Asian asssociation with this one as well. Most perfumes can have an affinity with several looks, I think, at least the more complex ones.

And there seems to be some overlap in our taste 🙂

I do that all the time, Anniky, match perfume to colour in particular but also to the “story” my clothes tell on a particular day. Even if the match is meaningful only to me, it’s fun to do, and it helps me feel that I present the world a coherent whole.

This is exactly it. And not only to the world, but to yourself as well. One can intentionally mismatch things, of course, but there needs to be an idea behind it.

Exactly. I’m not at a demure person, but every now and then, I do dress in quite a ladylike way. However, I can’t quite bear to wear a prissy little perfume those days–that feels like a total deception. I’ll sometimes do the,”Yes I really am a girl,” thing in conjunction with a big hitter–maybe Femme or an Amouage or even Coromandel.

I really find it hard to describe. It is almost identical to the L’AP Mimosa pour Moi, except where MpM has that dry almond accord in the middle, the Diptqyue stays more linear in the heliotrope & very bright fresh mimosa. It’s a very cheerful fragrance – lots of green notes like fresh snapped twig. I don’t know if this helps. It is very pretty.

‘Lo, everyone. I was thinking, as I made breakfast just now, that there are some everyday events that suggest the day will pootle along smoothly: the tea is perfect, not too much milk, very hot and exactly the right colour; a sort of annoyed snort sounds from our bedroom, where my husband battles Dakkie for his glass of water — Dakkie prefers to drink from a glass; he’s that sort of cat; my hair doesn’t start the day looking like an anguished toilet brush, though it will certainly finish that way; my perfume choice falls into place with no thought on my part and is perfect for my clothes, my diary, the weather. So, long story short, my SOTD is Cristalle. I am revelling in its clean, crisp lines and interesting, energising structure, and I hope my students and colleagues appreciate it as it deserves.

Poodle, I think that word might be a family invention. Apparently, when I was little, I used to talk about putting on my “pooters” — meant gumboots. I suspect that my mother or sixtes turned it into a verb, but it’s quite descriptive of a mode of progression, isn’t it

I love days like that and completely understand the cat battle. My mom’s very elderly cat will struggle up on the bed, limp across, and even risk the perilous leap (only about 3″, but she’s really old) to the night stand for a drink if anyone’s dumb enough to leave an uncovered glass out. We all have adult sippy-cups of some sort so as not to be awakened by a glass-full of water to the face. Hope the rest of your day is a smooth as the beginning.

Unlabeled sample vial. Turns out to be Iunx L’Ether, upon comparison with a decant that is labeled. It’s pleasant and very natural and very, very subtle. It’s been a decade since I visited Muir Woods, so you can take this with a grain of salt, but it reminds me of standing in Muir Woods on a cool, foggy day. I think the scent of the woods was stronger and more definite, but it has kind of that feeling. It alternates between being just right and not quite right. Whatever gives it that foggy feeling sometimes feels too strong against my nasal cavity even though it’s a very slight aroma.

I’m so proud of myself. I felt like absolute hell this morning with nausea and dry heaves and such and I actually called in sick. I very rarely do that. I usually just pull myself together and go in but as I was staring at my reflection in the toilet bowl I thought what on earth is so important that you need to go to the office today. I couldn’t think of a thing. So I called my boss and put my jammies back on and went back to bed. Shortly after my hubband almost killed me with his strong fragrance selection before he left for work. My tummy couldn’t handle it. So no perfume for me today yet although I am feeling a bit better this afternoon.

We have to go to a film screening and, since I’m terribly overdressed anyway, I’m gonna skunk everyone out with Musc Tonkin EDP at nuclear levels. I was having a don’t-know-what-to-wear meltdown so my husband stepped in and chose my outfit. He actually did well, if it wasn’t almost 90 degrees.
