Thursday scent of the day 10/1

Posted by Robin on 1 October 2015 210 Comments

Alice the Amorphophallus

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! It's October already. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm on day 5 (I started on Sunday) of Fendi Theorema. Not bored yet!

Reminder: tomorrow will be Best Buy Friday: tell us about your most amazing discount or other rare find. (suggested by Oakland Fresca)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows Alice the Amorphophallus (at various stages of growth), which has just finished blooming at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Impressed at the Theorama run – you smell lovely.

In a few squirts of No5 edp today – much needed for a long meeting.

You and a lot of other people. I’m perplexed that Serge Lutens never launched quarter-ounce perfumes, even just of his big sellers. They would generate a firestorm of interest and publicity and sales. I deserve a blocky little lead-crystal flaçon of La Myrrhe extrait, dammit!

Went looking for my mini of Theorema and instead found a gold cigarette-case tin of Penhaligon’s samples I forgot I owned, so I’m in Endymion, a barber’s-soap fougere that turns into a coffee scent that turns into a sandalwood oriental. Hell of a thing.

Just got back from vacation very early this morning and starting to get back to reality. Riding the last little bit of L’air du Desert Morocain. After my shower, I might wear Lyric or Epic. I’m happy to be home and have my full collection on hand to choose from. It’s hard to pick from 5 perfumes when I know I have about 50 bottles at home

It’s an embarrassingly long list because I am absolutely obsessed with Uncle Serge.

            Ambre Sultan
            Arabie
            Chergui
            Chypre Rouge
            Douce Amere
            Feminité du Bois
            Fourreau Noir (bell jar)
            Fumerie Turque (bell jar)
            Jeux de Peau
            Rahät Loukoum
            Santal Blanc
            Serge Noire
            Un Bois Vanille

I theoretically require Bois et Fruits, Boxeuses, La Myrrhe, Mandarine-Mandarin, and Santal de Mysore to make my collection complete. Probably won’t happen. I already have more scents than I could ever finish in a lifetime.

Pyramus, for that you deserve a fox fur poof-ball of Uncle Serge!

            Something like:
Fendi Lutenesque Fox Fur & Leather Pom-Pom Charm (Fittingly reminiscent of Serge Luten’s elusive aesthetic, the plush fur pom-pom should be attached to one’s head or the hood ornament on a car…. for a dose of… what else?: sartorial whimsy.)

            1 October 2015 at 3:03 pm

Pyramus, this seems a perfectly reasonable list to me. I’ve got seven bottles, I think, and it’s definitely not enough.

Also, it’s not about finishing things anyway.

This is the one I regret not buying during my last trip to Paris. I narrowed it down to La Voix Noire and Boxeuses . I had difficulty choosing between these two and finally I chose La voix noire, but to tell you the truth, when I came back home , I knew I did a mistake. La Voix Noire is nice but doesn’t last at all on me, it disappears after one or two hours max. My husband was with me and he told me that he preferred Boxeuses but of course I didn’t listen to him. I really regret not buying it.

Cool day after 6 days of rain – it’s supposed to start up again tomorrow, and that’s not counting the hurricane effects, if we get those. My hometown may be underwater by Tuesday if Joaquin visits… (where I live now is about 50 miles away, and while we’ll all get wet feet, we won’t flood dangerously the way Roanoke will).

Robin, I’m vicariously enjoying your nothin’-but-Theorema week. Remember when they did that “signature scent for a week challenge” over on the Posse? I think there are very few perfumes I could live in for a week – Le Temps d’une Fete probably, and Safari. I think I’ve done it with Soivohle Centennial and vintage Jolie Madame, too. Can’t even remember what I picked for the Posse challenge.

    Tabac Aurea today, though.

Good luck with the storm – my son has a soccer game in VA Beach this weekend, somehow I doubt its going to happen!

If my memory is correct, the signature scent challenge was here on NST, but you may be right. Regardless, I couldn’t do it – in fact I usually wear several different perfumes a day (e.g. one for work, another for evening, and yet another for bedtime).

There definitely was a signature-scent challenge here on NST, and by the end of the third day I was well and truly sick of whatever it was I chose to wear (I can’t even remember). I can easily wear three or four different scents on my days off. Some people just need a whole lot of change, and you are one of them and I am another.

I didn’t manage it at all for the NST challenge. During the Perfume Posse challenge a year or two before that, I spent a week fairly happily with BK Liaisons Dangereuses. Admittedly, was going commando by the last couple of days. The great thing about it is how wonderful anything else smells after that. 😉

Yep, I remember that.. I decided to see if I could do a week of Bulgari Black, and by god I did it, but it was starting to grate a bit by the end. I ended up swapping that bottle away because I really didn’t wear it much (aside from that week), and I sometimes wish I’d at least kept a decant around.

If the weather was consistent for the week (all cold or all hot, etc) I could probably do a week pretty easily. I can think of about 10 that I would happily wear for a week but truthfully 4-5 days would be much easier than a full 7-day week!

Here it was, waaaay back in 2010 on the Posse: http://perfumeposse.com/2010/11/07/signature-scent-challenge-results/ And apparently I did okay with a week of Emeraude… but I truly don’t remember another Whole Week of Just One on NST! (I do occasionally take Internet breaks; maybe it was during one of those.)

It really is nice not to have to decide. And sometimes I just get going on a hitting streak or something, when some particular scent is particularly perfect for days on end. That happens.

      Hope everybody stays dry.

Oh, and I found the Signature Scent thing here too: early September of 2014. And I DID participate, too – at least, I started on Friday, but I lasted three days before the weather drastically changed and my choice became untenable. 🙂 My fault for choosing something that wasn’t terribly good in transitional temperatures.

When I was on the verge of turning into a serious perfume nerd, I bought my first niche scent – Fracas. And I wore it almost every day, for months, until the bottle was nearly empty.

Now I very rarely wear the same scent for several days, but it’s not so much that I can’t, I just prefer not to. There are so many gorgeous things to wear.

    SOTD: EL Sensuous Noir.
Hmmm. Thought I loved this stuff. It’s okay. More fleeting than I remembered. For the first time ever I smelled the pine note everyone else seems to notice. It’s weird, sometimes you just have to smell things from different angles…. not sure if that makes sense.

Aren’t our noses funny. I own EL Sensuous Noir, hadn’t worn it since last winter, when I thought hmmmm too. I wore it last weekend to bed, and loved it…more of an aaaah. There is a similarity with FdB to my nose, it is less refined, but longer lasting. So you smell good.

Yes, I definitely smell the similarity with FdB, although much less woody on me. For a mainstream I was really pleased with EL Sensuous Noir at first but it seems like I’ve smelled a few other mainstreams just like it in the past 2 years. I suppose EL should get respect for starting a better trend….

Makes perfect sense. The worst is picking up a really jarring note in something you love (and thought everyone was nuts for smelling tinned peas/diapers/sewage/fish/whatever in), and never quite being able to un-smell it. I have a few forlorn bottles around where I occasionally try a sniff in the hopes that my nose (well, my brain actually, but it gets picked on enough) has forgotten. I can forget an important meeting or to pay a bill, so why can’t I erase the wet dog smell association from a perfume I used to love 🙁

Pine doesn’t sound so bad though. Maybe you’re just not in the mood?

The pine isn’t bad, it’s just that I’ve worn this at least a dozen+ times and never even smelled it before! And, YES, I go a little mad when someone detects a “diaper or cat urine or some-other-awful note” in one of my favorites and then I smell it too and can never unsmell it! So unfair.

hm yes, that makes sense and is totally what I got this morning spraying on some Ambra del Nepal. I have the little bottle with just a little perfume left in it and I think it somehow got funky over the summer or maybe my nose is a bit different today. Definitely I’m getting a whiff of “wet dog”/mothball and a tiny trace of bleach. I’ve been battling a migraine since yesterday and the headache could be effecting my sniffer.

Even an almost-headache throws off my perception. I usually try not to wear perfume if I’m fighting one so that if it goes nuclear I’m not stuck desperately trying to scrub and risk having something, even temporarily, ruined.

headaches, migraines that time of the month and allergies can completely throw off my sense of smell. I have to be careful not to wear anything (which is nearly impossible) if I know a headache or allergy season is approaching.

Lately I’ve been experiencing seasonal allergies for the first time (I’m over 40). I can generally wear more natural-leaning fragrances (for instance Annick Goutal never bothers me even in the throes of allergy season) but most other scents make my throat feel like it’s constricting. I’ve taken to wearing fragrance on other body parts so it’s not just under my nose when I’m having allergies (such as spraying on the inside of the back of my clothing or behind my knees). That might sound a little crazy but as long as the fragrance isn’t up close to my face or chest or wrists I can handle the scent from a farther distance 😉

That’s a really good suggestion. AG scents are usually ok for me too and I think I will stick to spraying on my wrists for now. I also spray the nape of my neck to get more of a scent trail, but I like your idea of spraying the back inside of clothing a bit further down from the neck.

Actually, I think the migraine started yesterday when I was trying to clear out the sprayer tube on my bottle of vintage Armani EDT that I thought had turned. I sprayed a lot of it onto a tissue and the sprayer is kind of leaky so there was a small puddle of perfume left on the bathroom sink. Needless to say, it’s an EDT from 1983 so a bit of a nuclear fume bomb. The bathroom was super stank all day and I think might have triggered the headache.

oh, it’s a shame that happened. I hope it doesn’t make you dislike the vintage Armani now.

I hope you feel better and lose the headache soon. Make sure you’re fully hydrated (with water and careful with caffeine) and get extra sleep tonight.

I have different reactions each time I test Sensuous. First time. NO. Second time many months later – where have you been?! Third time – huh? I was thinking I might try and score a small bottle, but I don’t know. I like that dry woody part, but it seems to be a shape shifter.

today it’s a shape shifter and then it seemed to completely disappear within 2-3 hrs. poof, gone. It was really really good when I first sprayed – the first hour, though.

maybe try just a sample. EL is easy to get a spray sample from the department store or even on ebay.

The bottle is a nice thing to look at though.

Interesting… I haven’t worn Sensuous Noir in a while (should do that soon), and I don’t remember ever picking up a pine note in it. I always liked the pine in Fille en Aiguilles so I think I’d like it if I noticed it. I’ll have to pay attention next time I wear it and see if I pick up on it.

    Hello Scented lovelies!,
SOTD is Miller Harris Fleur Oriental, it’s a lovely little sister to Shalimar, more ‘every day/easy’ than my vintage shalimar edt or edp.
It has a nice spicy carnation note, which i love. perfect sunny autumn day fragrance.

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Would you BdI fans chime in re longevity of the edt, and whether the parfum differs significantly? Been testing the edt recently, and seems to disappear quickly–not one of my usual issues. Honestly, I get a better & longer-lasting sandalwood drydown from Eau Premiere (the gingerbread effect has yet to manifest on me).

The extrait lasts quite well on me, but would imagine it has less sillage than the EdT (I still have not tried the EdT, and given how long it’s been out, I guess I’m not going to!)

Yes – I have both the edt and extrait of BDI. I think they are both very different animals. I do like that I need to keep reapplying the edt – I love that opening! It doesn’t last as long, but still pretty good at a few hours on me, and it smells just slightly different. I don’t even know what I’d call it – some sort of astringent wood thing that is not present in the extrait. The extrait wears very soft, unless you put on a ton. It is more gingerbready, but not really foody at all, but “thicker” & “chewier” than the edt. It has a softer sillage. I think the sandalwood part is the same in both, but the other supporting notes in the composition vary. I think the lasting time is pretty good with the extrait – a few hours – but it does soften a bit. Maybe you have a musk blocking issue in the edt? I don’t think the sandalwood in BDI – either version -smells anything like the application of sandalwood in the base of Eau Premiere. I don’t know if this helps, but it sounds like you need to have some fun testing…..

I absolutely love it when someone (you this time, AnnS) describe perfume as “thick or chewy.” I completely understand this and yet it makes me laugh. I imagine a non-perfume person thinking we are all so nuts! Most of the time I can’t imagine not being utterly ruled by my sense of smell.

anyway, ((sigh)) I have never experienced the gingerbread note in BdI. I feel left out!

I only get a tiny hint of what people call gingerbread in bdi. Mostly I smell deep spices and thick wood – tons of aldehydes. The whole effect for me is like putting on a darkly brown, thick cashmere wrap. It’s a very tactile smelling frag. I’m glad you understand my chewy comment!

I find the edt and the parfum to wear very differently. Like you, the edt doesn’t last long at all and the notes are much, much more diluted than the parfum. I can do without the edt but I’ll never be without a bottle of the parfum (which does smell like gingerbread on me).

I think my untesteds are definitely under 2 dozen. Might be about 10 or so untesteds at the moment. But I have a problem with ones I’ve tried, decided that I don’t need a bottle of, but like them enough to wear out the sample–the problem is then not finishing the sample. I must have 25 of that category sitting around. And since they are all 1mL or less, you’d think I’d use them up pretty fast. I’m trying to decide if it’s better to just power through them, ignoring my other bottles, or use them in between days from my bottles/decants.

I’m wearing Mitsouko EDT from a 5ml decant I got from STC, on one of their 5ml Friday sales. I got it primarily because it was Mitsouko!, but really never expected to like it. I put on a small spritz just out of bed, before my shower, fed the cats, and then sat down to read for a few minutes. But, I kept sniffing my arm, where I had spritzed. So, after my shower, I put on more Mitsouko (but not too much, ’cause I was a little afraid of it). I’m really liking it. I wish I knew which reformulation it is, because Victoria at Bois de Jasmin had good things to say about the 2013 reformulation, but not so much on the older reformulation. Anyway, I think I’m going to have to try the EDP and the Extrait.

I started the day in Geranium pour Monsieur, but i swear it was gone in about 10 minutes!
So then went for Rochas Alchimie- which I’ve been craving lately. This used to be one of my 3 regular scents years ago (along with YSL Nu and D&G classic (red lid) ), and these are the only 3 ive ever emptied (and replaced!) Forgot how much I love this stuff!

But now the Ambra is drying down to it’s usual self. The temperature here has dropped a little and it’s fun to dig out the ambers, the incenses and the spices. I’m really an oriental perfume lover and it’s so enjoyable to bring out those sultry fumes this time of year.

Decided to eat my words about the creep-factor of a woman pretending to be a child (although, in a slightly different context) and wear La Danza Delle Libellule which gives me a cozy little girl in a comfy nightgown feeling. I wonder if it reminds me of a shampoo I used as a kid? I smell like apples and sweets and think I’m going to break out the coloring book and Prismacolors. I just don’t feel like adult-ing today.

I admit I didn’t know it was a trend until my husband gifted me with one. I was an art and design major for a long time, and am the daughter of an art major so I have always tended to have lots of line art books that I have colored for fun. The new ones are really nice and unlike the accurate botanical sketches I’ve usually used. They make it more comfortable, being fantastical scenes and mandalas, to color imaginatively.

I’ve not been tempted by the last few releases from them (Florabellio, the many forgotten Eau’s) but Benjoin Boheme is fantastic, Essences Insensees Jasmine is beautiful (I’m very tempted) and I’m afraid Oud Palao will make tomorrow’s damage poll very damaging for me. The Essences Insensees seems an atypical Diptyque to me. It reminds me of a more refined version of Lush Lust. Or another thing that came to mind: if A la Nuit is pure jasmine juice, this one is jasmine syrup. It’s quite sweet and sticky and dark. I have a sample and I like it.

Pondering the same thing. A bottle is too much but a decant might hit the spot.

I am on a roll with BIG fluffy haired VA VA VOOM perfumes. Started out yesterday morning with Knowing… post shower I was in Ubar, and last night I went to bed wearing Diva. This morning I decided not to buck the trend and generously applied Costume National Scent… I have no meetings or errands scheduled, so I think humanity is safe!

I never get beyond two or three days with one perfume, no matter how much I like it. 99 times out of 100, I just want something different the next day. In those very rare cases when a perfume is both wonderful and versatile, and I feel like I could go on wearing it, I’ll deliberately stop wearing it after a day or two, anyway. I’m afraid of “wearing out” the charm, as happens when you listen to a pop tune or a Vivaldi one too many times. My brain is easily bored: once it unravels the mystery, it loses all interest. I can’t hang art on the walls, either, because I’ll get sick of it.

The last perfumes I had to stop myself from over-wearing were L’AP Seville a l’Aube and Amouage Beloved.

    Hi there NST perfume land!

I have an odd, but happy request! I went to an estate sale today and got a variety of perfume goodies! I also got a nearly full bottle of Serge Lutens — with the front label torn off! 🙁

I am almost certain it is Ambre Sultan, but as I am not an Ambre Sultan fan in particular, I am not positive. Would somebody be willing to step up to receive a hefty decant from me (free of charge) to check? Preferably somebody who knows and loves Ambre Sultan and/or Uncle Serge well. All I ask is that you email me to confirm or deny that this is it! Please email me at kgoodw2 at hotmayl dot com for a freebie! 🙂

Greetings and salutations, NST. I’m starting the day slowly, sort of letting it creep up and catch me, rather than hurtling out to meet it, but I want to leave a nice trail so it can find me. To this end, I’m in Lyric. My husband just asked me to define my scent, which is almost the highest praise my laconic Kiwi bloke can offer. It’s far beyond “fine”, his usual response if he doesn’t actively dislike something: it denotes real interest, and, ummm, engagement. Pity it’s a work day????

I wore a green dress and a green cardigan today so naturally Guerlain Vetiver was the only logical choice! The cardigan still smelled distinctly of l’air du desert marocain from a few days ago though, because the half-life on that one on fabric is monstrous. In a good way. They don’t smell half bad together, anyway!

    Hello NST
I am wearing the amazing Tom Ford PB Black Violet that I finally managed to get! I noticed this scent on someone else in a restaurant years ago. I asked and remembered the name. I was not able to afford it back then, and than, it was discontinued.
Last week, while looking for something else on eBay, I came across it and… got it!
I am so happy! (and the price was right!)

I did some racer sniffing at the counters today and tried on L’Heure de Nuit (very pretty but if I were investing in that genre I’d prefer Shem el Nessim or sturdy old L’Origan extrait) and one of Cartier’s Heures that I didn’t like (4 or 6 maybe? I’m annoyed by bottling schemes that make it so very difficult to remember what’s what). The delightful Cartier SA offered samples of Panther Eau Legère and Eau de Cartier Goutte de Rose, so now I’m trying to choose between those two for an evening that is semi professional and semi creative and very social. Any votes?

I vote for Goutte de Rose — it’s subtle, clever, sexy and slightly off-centre, in the sense of containing unexpected elements; not over-serious, and altogether appealing. I like the whole Panther family well enough, but they aren’t as idiosyncratic (in a good way) as you are.

I had a terribly busy day yesterday and couldn’t find a spare minute to get on the computer. (I didn’t even have a SOTD because I didn’t have the time to choose one. Gasp!) But I wanted to thank you for posting Alice’s picture, Robin. Getting to go see the bloom in person was a very special experience. And to answer your question from Wednesday – Yes, it was the second Corpse Flower that didn’t really smell. The first one, Spike, bloomed but never opened. So there was never any scent. Alice apparently had a scent when she opened up around midnight. The botanist said it brought tears to his eyes when he opened the door to the room. By the time I got there she’d been open for about 16 hours and the smell had dissipated. The smell was unpleasant, but I had to lean in and take a big whiff to notice it.

I guess that just means I’ll have to go back when the next one blooms! (I think they said they have seven of them.)

Wow, seven of them! I hear they are big draws everywhere they have them, so not surprised. A bloom in the US used to be rare, now they’re pretty regular.

And can’t decide if I’d rather be there when it was so bad it brought tears to the eyes, LOL…maybe somewhere in between is best!

Yes, a huge draw. The reason they didn’t announce Alice until she opened was because they were embarrassed about everything fizzling out after all the attention Spike received. People came for a week to see it, hoping that would be “the day.” The revenue generated will probably fund the garden for a couple of years. And I’m okay with that. It’s a gorgeous place that deserves the publicity.
