Tuesday scent of the day 9/29

Posted by Robin on 29 September 2015 225 Comments

Fendi Resort 2016

It's National Coffee Day! Go ahead, have another cup. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still in Fendi Theorema.

Reminder: this coming Friday will be Best Buy Friday: tell us about your most amazing discount or other rare find. (suggested by Oakland Fresca)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It’s 2.00pm, I’m at work and still radiating Muscs Koublai Khan wondering if it was entirely appropriate office wear…
I fear I may have instigated a nationwide ban on perfume in the UK workplace today – sorry about that everyone.

This made me laugh out loud!

I do this frequently myself. I just can’t help occasionally and billowing big wafts of PdE Musc Tonkin (or a dozen other heavyweights) around the office and then worry how perfume will end up being banned in the office and it’s all my fault!

But how can they protest when you smell so good!

I’m actually quite guilty of doing the same in my office – like today.

Dia could be considered a tamer version of Gold – arguably mild enough to be worn at the office. (I also have a decant of Beloved in my perfume drawer at work.)

Inspiration strikes, thank you–J25 for me, and just the very thing it will be! I went scentless yesterday and felt semi-unsettled all day. I don’t want to creep quietly back onto the perfume fields wearing something quiet and polite: I want to storm back smelling gorgeous and unassailable! I can’t think of anything better than Jubilation! Oh, and the name is perfect for today too: “I’m in Jubilation.” Excellent!

I am in fact drinking coffee this very moment (it’s afternoon here, so it’s my second cup). I’m wearing Arquiste Flor y Canto: not quite enough tuberose for me, but it’s lovely nevertheless. One of my colleagues liked it so much that I’ve given her my decant. Hope to be hired by the Arquiste marketing department any moment now 🙂

          • mals86 says:

Hmm. Well, probably my fave is Carnal Flower, but I also love Flowerhead and the rereleased Le Galion Tubereuse, which I just have decants of. Then there are all those old-school tubey/WF bombs like Tatiana and Margaretha Ley, love those too and it will take me forever to use them up.

Isn’t he charming? I’m pretty sure I would buy a full bottle of The Architects Club if he asked me personally, which is saying something since I found it thin and disappointing.
Actually, maybe I should give my sample another try before I condemn it to the back of the closet. I often eat my words when I re-test something, and I mostly didn’t like it because it wasn’t what I had envisioned.

I was also disappointed with that one, especially as I loved the concept and the name. But Nanban turned out to be what I wanted from The Architects Club, so in the end, I’m content.

SOTD = Rose Chypree. Couldn’t help myself and augmented it with one spritz over my head of Mitsouko before I went out the door. I had to fortify myself for the flu shot I got on my way to work.
Our hospital system is requiring everyone to get one this year, or get tattoo’d with “I refused to participate in herd immunity” on their forehead – well, not really, but anyone who refuses to get a flu shot now has to wear a mask anytime and all the time they are at the hospital. Drastic measures, but our hospital, in spite of its standing and funding, has problems with incidental infections, and it seems like someone is finally getting serious about it…which is ok by me.
My grandfather died of tick fever before they knew how to treat it, and everyone in my family has gotten every vaccine that comes down the pike every since they invented the things.
But I digress. The point is, the nurse who gave me my flu shot said, “Oh, you smell fabulous! What IS that?” So I told her. She wrote down both names. 🙂

Wow, those are strict measures, but it’s nice to know they are taking it seriously. I think that would be hilarious to have that tattooed on the forehead though.
      You smell great!

We have those same measures at our hospital too. I remember years back there was a law suit when the hospital was forcing employees to get the shot until one nurse got a lawyer – now just the mask and a signed waiver if you don’t want to protect yourself

Yes, people can opt out, but they have to go sign pieces of paper saying, “I understand I am refusing to participate in herd immunity, and I promise I will wear those stupid masks all the time.” We all get a little sticker on our ID badges when we get the shot, and if you don’t have the sticker, you have to have a mask on.
I got there early and figured I would be first in line, and there were already 60 people line up…

Have you tried allergy meds? I got pretty irked when someone tried to prescribe them to me last year for sinus infections + bronchitis, as it was very clear I did have an infection not just allergies–but, it turned out reducing the inflammation has made me way, way less susceptible to the other stuff. (And, I just feel better overall, had not even realized that I was feeling minorly tired/headachey all the time–just thought that was how humans feel!) Worth a shot maybe!

I feel like my allergist just about saved my life! I went in for a visit, and she made me do a breathing thing, and my lung capacity was about 22%, after she had asked me how I was doing and I said, “Oh, you know, not bad for this time of year….! ” She just looked at me and said, “You are allergic to everything. Please let me treat you. Take the allergy pills, do the inhaler, and the nasa cort just the way I tell you, whether you think you need it or not, for 6 weeks, and then tell me how you feel.” Improved my quality of life by an order of magnitude.

        • AnnS says:
          29 September 2015 at 1:35 pm

Yes, thank you, I do take sinus/allergy meds and that helps. But bronchitis will take me and many of my work colleagues out for weeks every year. Flu is hit or miss even with a local population that does/doesn’t get the shot. I pray for a cure, lol!

Happens to me as well, AnnS, even with flu shot. Pneumonia 2x last winter. Trying to get ahead of it this year with Nasalcort and Mucinex, but I can no longer use my inhalers or dextromethorphan (sp?) – interactions -and am very anxious about this winter. Everyone at work is always ill.

SoTD is Amoureuse – forgot this am, and that’s what was in my purse.

          • AnnS says:
            29 September 2015 at 2:49 pm

Yeah – and pneumonia kills people too, right? I have to watch meds too b/c I’m sensitive to having my heart race/irregular beating, etc.

            We are both in Amoureuse!

I got a sample of Black Opium that I am testing today. I believe it may have some coffee in it.

Thanks, C.H.! I managed to get through the day without getting fired or murdering anyone, and I’m pretty sure the CPF helped. 🙂 I hope you do get to try it sometime soon – it is a very light, smooth violet-suede kind of leather. I do wish it lasted a little bit longer, but it’s not as if it’s gone in a flash – it lingers for maybe 4 hours on me before it fades to nearly unnoticeable.

I decided on Dame Perfumery’s Mate, Heliotrope & Patchouli today, trying to avoid all things vanilla. It is amazing, but for a person who dislikes vanilla scents as much as I do, how many of my fragrances have vanilla at least in the base. it’s because I do so much of the blind buying of minis.

I used to greatly dislike vanilla too, but I’ve been converted. I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan, but in the right application it can be really nice. There are a LOT of perfume bases with vanilla in them.

I hadn’t heard of that perfume before and looked it up. It sounds really nice.

Woke up with that remains of Adam Levine for Her from my SOTE, which is lingering with a light creamy spice. Thought it would be fitting to start today with Bvlgaria Omnia. Haven’t worn this for a while and it smells wonderful!

Two cups of half-caff today. Delicious. This is Day 5 of what is projected to be a 10-day-long rainy spell, so things are a bit soggy around here.

I am collecting items, including several perfumes, to sell on ebay. Have never sold anything there before, and am a little apprehensive about it although I buy on teh ‘bay allll the time. Eep.

Hello, SOTD is Lipstick Rose, i’ve got a 10ml travel spray, will definitely get a full bottle someday, & iris poudre!

My lovely husband got me some Amouage samples (sprayed on card)
after work yesterday from Selfridges in London. Epic Woman and Journey Woman. This morning my tea seemed to smell and taste amazing, finally realised it was my glasses steaming up, and giving off divine scent of Epic!- my glasses had been on the sample all night and picked up the smell, such torture not being able to afford a bottle! Can anyone out there compare Journey and Epic?

and if i fall head over heels, will have to knock Jub 25 off the top of my christmas list!
scentsamplesuk does have Journey tho, so will get a small decant of that next month, i’ll keep fingers crossed they’ll get Epic soon!

Goodness, those two really are different fragrances. I bought a bottle of Journey, which I love. It’s mostly mimosa on me with the tea note in the background and is a bit sweet with a touch of honey.
I also have an Amouage sample of Epic and it’s all spices with incense and oud. The floral notes are very subdued on me, but maybe will come out more on other skin. It’s all yummy spices to me.

I thought it was more chocolaty than tobacco-y, but I like tobacco notes, so I may not be the most reliable source for tobacco intensity. (For the record, I was surprised, but I liked the scent and found it pretty fun and appealingly sweet.)

It is fun & sweet–just looked at the notes, and while it smells a bit of tobacco, there’s none listed. I know I didn’t care for Tobacco Vanille.
Will note it seems pretty potent–don’t think I’d ever apply more than a discreet spritz.

SOTD is Andy Tauer’s Eau D’Epices. I don’t think it’s in production any longer but I love it. However, I should have known better than to wear any Tauerade to the office. My boss hates perfume and gags and/or turns up his nose, and or tries to elude me in every way he can. I have been watching what I spritz for work for quite a while now so as to not offend him (and fellow co-workers), but this morning I just picked up a Tauer and sprayed only a couple of small spritzes but it is a Tauer so even one small spritz can be readily detected. I’m sure it will be just as strong at the end of the day.

Lolita Lempicka Fleur Défendue/Forbidden Flower. I have a mini of this that Ive never worn properly because I prefer to spray, so I put some in a decant sprayer. Omg this is so nice! Im pretty sure it’s now discontinued, but although it’s classified as fruity floral gourmand- which by that alone I’d usually avoid- it’s all powdery anice, almond and cherry, with a bit of greenness to balance it.

Yes – it was my unnecessary fragrance splurge over the summer. I let myself have it, even though I certainly didn’t need it. So, it does smell exactly like BV, but not as intense. Conversely, it lasts for a very long time on the skin. It stands on it’s own – you won’t have to apply any fragrance after you use it unless you want to clear the room. The formula is not really moisturizing as such if you have really dry skin like I do, but it has a lovely dbo texture that gives a nice light sheen to the skin. The formula was perfect for summer use. It spreads really well. Anyway…. The bottle is gorgeous as solid glass just like the fragrance, and just has an open screw top, so it’s not very user friendly apres bath. I decanted some into a regular 1 oz plastic nozzle bottle so I can use it without worry. I also lust after the body cream, but it’s too costly. Hope this helps!

In addition to perfume, coffee is a daily pleasure for me. I drink half a cup at home (Peet’s Major Dickenson), and then small doses throughout the morning at work. I also have about a quarter cup mid-afternoon with something sweet. Amazing what a creature of habit I can be.
I’m still on the look out for that perfect coffee scented perfume 😉

I recently purchased a large tube of Bliss Bergamot and Vanilla body lotion at Marshalls. I had never tried this before and wore it today because I was too sleepy to choose a fragrance this morning. It smells very much like Shalimar to my nose and would probably layer beautifully with many vanilla centric perfumes.

I have the lotion and shower gel. It is great to layer under any vanillic scent. I also think it’s a bit less sweet than many others currently on the market. Probably aimed at a younger crowd.

I had one big mug of instant Trader Joe’s coffee with milk in the morning to kick start the day. The rest of the day I don’t normally unless I am truly suffering from fatigue. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more sensitive to caffiene….. But I do love a gorgeous hot cup of black coffee.

SOTD DelRae Amoureuse edp. I’m celebrating the last warm day we’ll have for about 7 months. Cheers!

Started the day with some dabber rose samples – Rose di Siwa on one arm and Rozy on the other (believe it’s the EDP).

The Rozy started out kind of meh, and now that I’m putting my nose to my wrist, hours later, suddenly WHOOOOSH this is pretty. I wasn’t at all expecting that after feeling so unimpressed by the opening. Reminds me of L’arte di Gucci quite a lot. Did anyone else get that impression?

I have a decant of Rose di Siwa. I get pink rose petals and peony with a touch of violet and vetiver. It is very feminine and pretty.

I am not familiar with Rozy. I heard that it has a cumin note? Not a fan of cumin.

Rose di Siwa is almost perfect, for a light summery rose-peony. (Almost, because it’s $$$$.) So pretty.

How fitting! I don’t normally drink coffee but had one this morning. Just finished off my decant of Carthusia Mediterraneo. Such a refreshing lemon. Our warmer than usual weather continues, but that is OK with me as summer citrusy fragrances are among my favorites. Good thing I live in San Diego!

Original Shiseido FdB. Everyone’s been talking about it so much this week & it fits Friday’s bargain theme…(since I found a 2/3rds 50 ml bottle thrifted for $8)

Don’t think I’ve worn it since last fall, so I gave myself a thorough enough spritzing to really get the cedar and cuminy fuzzy aspects. Too little, and it’s just transparent too much and it gets…sweet?
When it wears “right,” I almost regret wearing it, because I won’t be able to replace it.

I found it early enough in my perfume hunting that I didn’t know what (or more precisely how rare) it was. I just thought it smelled nice and had a really cool bottle. And I knew that cool bottles were easier to sell online. (Which is what happened to the duck/swan bottle of DK Signature I found around then).

Ih Al-Rehab Choco Musk today. For a something that is $0.5 for a ml, this is really nice. Cocoa note is pretty strong and dry/not-sweet, has nice staying power(at least 6 hours). It is very linear, but for such a price you can hardly expect a masterpiece.

YSL Cinema….I’m very influenced by what’s going on in nature and being Spring I am surrounded by lots of mimosa in glorious yellow flower….several on my street. My memory of Cinema (which I haven’t worn for a year or more) is the mimosa burst. Also the recent reviews of Jo Malone Mimosa and Cardamon ( which I haven’t tried) reignited my interest in this note.
The magnolias are doing a whirl so that will inspire me for tomorrow.

I am so happy that mimosa fragrances are a trend. It is such a wonderful note, especially to be used prominently. I think Cinema is a lovely scent! I only got to smell the JM M&C on a mag insert – very nice for what I could get. It almost seemed like a unisex fragrance b/c of the cardamom. It would layer well for sure.

Finally getting a chance to report: in a lucky bit of scheduling for me, I got to stop by Ari’s new store, Arielle Shoshana, on its opening day! So exciting–it’s really gorgeous you guys, and of course the selection is fantastic. I left smelling AMAZING: am newly in love with Neela’s Bombay Bling. Also on offer Smell Bent, MFK, L’Artisan including the new one, CB I Hate Perfume, ELDO, among others! (And, for those not currently in driving distance–you can also order these from the Arielle Shoshana website.) Best of all, I got to meet Ari as well as Coolcookstyle, who was visiting to help open the store! As you can imagine: perfume shopping was a zillion times more fun with purveyors as knowledgeable and enthusiastic as those two!

At risk of Captain Obvious-ing this: if you get a chance to go, do, you’ll love it 🙂

I had no idea it was national coffee day. Coincidentally, I did treat myself to a second cup at the mall this afternoon. I drink decaf though. Not really sure if that counts.

SOTD is Chinatown on one wrist and Modern Muse le Rouge on the other, due to aforementioned trip to mall. Neither is my style, but I’m enjoying wearing both. I’m very surprised by how much I like le Rouge because I didn’t care for the original.

I’m very excited because I’ve convinced Mr. Lucy to take me to the Chicago Botanical Garden tonight. The had a Corpse Flower bloom today. This was a huge surprise because they had one at the end of August that never opened up and thought it could be years before it ever happened again. I can’t wait to come back tomorrow and tell you all how awful it was! 🙂

Yes, I got an email this a.m. from the CBG and read the story in today’s Trib. How funny that the one that was supposed to bloom (with tons of publicity) was a big bust and then all of a sudden this one opened up and they scrambled to get the news out. It sounds like it really stinks, especially at night, so I will take a pass. Can’t wait to hear your reaction!

Speaking of less than fragrant aromas, you were so right about Mackinac! Yes, fudge + horse manure (+ perhaps a fresh, aquatic topnote) would = a scent bottled as “Mackinaw.” 🙂 We enjoyed our day on the Island but enjoyed camping in the U.P. and eating lots of Yooper food (especially pasties and whitefish) even more. And, yes, we did bring home some fudge, being tourists after all!

Fudge – I got some cherry chocolate fudge up there once that was the best. Perfectly balanced fruity, chocolately, not too sweet, totally smooth…went back and didn’t find it anywhere.
La la! I tell myself fudge on my imagination is better than fudge on my hips…

I’ve had that fudge before. And while I always partake when I’m there, I’m not a fudge person overall. The tartness of the cherries kept me from feeling that each bite was giving me a cavity. I wonder if it’s only available during cherry season/festival time?

I had a Mackinac Island Fudge beer the last time I was there. It was produced by Arbor Brewing Company but (at the time) only available on the island. It was amazing, kind of similar to a Guinness but with chocolate aroma and more complexity. It appealed to all of my perfumista senses.

Yes, it was funny – all the employees were talking about how they were scared to announce the bloom because they felt bad about disappointing everyone before. I was so excited to see “Spike” (the first one) that even after they announced he wasn’t going to open I went anyway. I really thought it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’ll be posting about “Alice” in today’s SOTD thread.

I’m so glad you had fun on your trip! You’ve got me jonesing for a pasty. I haven’t had one in a really long time… Although there is one company in Chicago that I know of that makes great ones. I forgot to add lilac to the scent of Mackinac. Even though their season is short lived it seems that most shops have capitalized on it with soaps, lotions, and candles. Our “Mackinac” will be horse manure, fudge, fresh aquatic scent, and lilacs. Or we could call it mess in a bottle. It sounds kind of awful.

I had no idea what I was in the mood for this morning so I grabbed one of my un-tested samples and smeared away. Apparently I’m wearing Arabian Oud Shah Silver, which doesn’t seem to exist on their website or anyplace except TPC. I’m enjoying it but not really lusting for a bottle. Actually, I’m trying to figure out what the heck it reminds me of. It’s starting to drive me nuts, it smells like…something…grrrr.
I’m a bit bored today. My husband is studying some work stuff and I’m trying to play quietly downstairs, but everything I want to do is upstairs and requires music or audiobook in the background. I finished all my outside chores this morning and I’ve done all the kitchen stuff I was putting off. If I go upstairs he will start reading to me about our state’s water plan and I had to listen to several hours of that last night, “Redundant paragraph about what this document is about, blah, blah, blah huge number acre-feet of water, blah, blah huge number billion dollars, D.C. al fine.”

In his defense, I was rolling meatballs so I was a captive audience. Why on earth do I volunteer to make the blasted things several times a year? I prefer them tiny, about the size of a grape, so it takes for-freakin’-ever. To make matters worse, meat coated hands make it impossible to drink wine while rolling them.

    SOTD = L’AP Seville a l’Aube

It was humid this morning when I took out the garbage but Seville seemed to fit anyway. This was my gateway to orange blossom but that train got derailed by Arabian Oud Ghroob and I still twitch when I see orange blossom as a note.
