Thursday scent of the day 9/10

Posted by Robin on 10 September 2015 101 Comments

Maison Schiaparelli Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2015-16 collection

It's Elsa Schiaparelli's birthday. Do tell us what fragrance you're wearing to celebrate.

I'm still (!) feeling a bit under the weather. Whatever it is that I have, I suggest you avoid it. Meanwhile, I'm wearing a small dab of Thierry Mugler Cologne.

Reminder: tomorrow, 9/11, will be Freedom Friday: wear a scent that says "I’m Free!" to you, in whatever context you choose to define it. (Suggested by Laila)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Sometimes bugs seem to take a long time to leave us, don’t they? Glad to hear you are at least improving.

My SOTD is Songes in EDP. I’m wallowing in it, so gorgeous.

It is amazing how this is hanging on, although I should say that my only symptoms are “achy bones” and general exhaustion. All I want to do is lie on the couch. My son & husband both have terrible congestion & cough, which I have managed to fend off entirely.

CK Reveal. I have to put it on the back of my neck, otherwise I want to jump out of my skin the first 15 minutes, but I love the salty vanilla cupcakes of the drydown.

I remember smelling a mag test strip of this one and really liking it, though I can’t recall what it smells like at all. I’m tempted to go ahead get the rollerball. Hard to resist at that price…

I’m still on my OJ sampling spree. Yesterday evening I tested Tsarina, it does indeed smell like the inside of an old leather purse, as I have read on another blog, this is highly interesting and suggestive, but not how I want to smell myself. So today it’s Montabaco, too sweet for my taste. So, the winner this week remains Vanille d’Iris. Tomorrow I’ll go back to my bottle of OJ woman.

Tried on some frags at shops today: Alaia- the first couple of seconds are nice on paper but then, and on skin, too sweet and fruity. Bela Freud’s 3 offerings- loved the opening of Ginsberg is God and found 1970 way too sweet, but after a couple of hours my opinion switched. Thank goodness I didnt buy on the spot!
And remembered how much I like CdG Black 🙂

Hi, Perthgirl. I had the same reaction exactly to the Alaia, but then I tried the body lotion, loved it, bought it, wore it, and–surprise!–pretty much re-interpreted the perfume for myself. Haven’t bought it, and may not, but really quite like it after all.

Oh damn i saw the body cream there too :-/ will try it again. As much as I say it’s too sickly and mainstream, I do keep picking up the pretty blotter to sniff.
I read Luca Turin’s review of it, and he said it was weird, and it kind of is. Will try again later.

In Epice Marine today, because I thought it would be good for warm, rainy weather. Ugh! It’s horrible! I’d tested it a few times before, and liked some aspects, but not others. I did my standard 3 sprays today (1 chest, 1 on inside of each elbow), and it’s just too much. Too much calone, spices are not blending right, just ick, ick, ick. I have one more application left in this sample. I’ll save it for a much cooler day, and try one last time. I think this one is most likely not for me…

In solidarity with Robin, I’m aching all over plus have developed an ugly cough. Didn’t want to interrupt my leather week, though, and chose Ramon Monegal Cuirelle – it’s the gentlest leather I have. Too gentle, in fact: I can only smell it when I press my nose to my wrist. Has anyone else had the same experience or it’s just my nose?

I had a sample of Cuirelle and it was fabulous and long lasting. I went ahead and got a bottle and it’s no where near as strong and it fades fast. I’m not sure what to make of that.

Hmmm. Was your sample in a dabber vial, and if so have you tried dabbing from the bottle rather than spraying? Sometimes a perfume completely changes character when I dab vs. spray.

I guess it depends on your cumin tolerance. It really evokes a seductive dance by a fragrant and sweaty Salome. I personally don’t think I could wear it and I’m not averse to noticeable cumin.

I enjoyed Heure Exquise so much last night that I’m wearing it again today. It’s competing nicely with the odd-smelling world today. The city is smoke-texting the sewer lines and not only does the “harmless” smoke burn my eyes like crazy, it smells downright funky which I suppose is partially the sewer aspect of it. Looks like there’s a leak in our front yard so I can look forward to someone digging and making a mess out there sometime this fall 🙁

It’s muggy, rainy and everyone is in super slouch mode today at work. It’s a “half day” here, meaning the morning hours are for us to look “busy” until we start up the company Final Fantasy draft, order pizza, drink the 4 cases of beer I bought an hour ago, and then play games all afternoon. It’s our company Spirit Day 🙂

I’m wearing vetiver EO from Providence Perfume Co (Haitian I think, diluted to 30% w/w in perfumer’s alcohol. Hee hee got my new toys this week: a fixed volume pipettor, 2000 tips for it, and a cheap jewelry scale). Basically I spent about $50 to be able to cleanly transfer and weigh my smelly stuff. So fun!

The unfortunate discovery: the scale shuts itself off while I’m adding drops! Any ideas how to work around that? Or still cheap but better scales?

This vetiver smells wonderful. And I now think my vintage rose objections might be attributable to the combination of rose, vetiver and galbanum notes. That’s the latest hypothesis anyway.

Maybe the drops aren’t heavy enough for the scale to register activity so the scale thinks you’re done after a certain time? Maybe giving it a periodic tap will remind it you’re still there.

      • leathermountain says:
        10 September 2015 at 5:45 pm

That’s a great idea! The weird thing is that it is registering the drops, and the numbers go up every drop or every second drop. I was so surprised that it still turned off. Maybe a little tap is enough to keep it fully awake. Probably not so accurate or precise in any case, right?

My postal scale shuts off after 30 seconds of inactivity. If your scale has a button to hold the current display, you may want to press it, jot down the number and then continue weighing and just keep taking notes on the weight, It sounds tedious but if accuracy is what you are looking for, it’s worth the inconvenience. Or just buy a better scale.

It was nice meeting you today!

I’d like to know too! What Ive tried so far:
Geranium Odorata is lovely but yes, fleeting.
Miller Harris Geranium Bourbon is longer lasting but it has a very old-fashioned musty drydown, and I prefer my geranium fresh.
LUSH Flower’s Barrow has other flowers, but it is very geraniumy and yum and long-lasting, if a little rustic.

Greetings, all. I should be asleep, but the dogs are going crazy at a fox or something, and now that I’m awake, my body is remembering that in A-New Zealand, I’d be up and doing around now. Beastly botheration! I’ve applied a generous amount of Rahat Loukhoum to help with quiet chores like organising my suitcase (looks like it exploded) and answering boring work emails (yes, I know I’m on holiday, but they don’t go away). The thing with RL is that once on, it doesn’t go away for about 15 hours –lasts even through a shower– so Lulu-dog will try to heel me again today. I suppose that’s the price of my pleasure in the perfume.

Robin,I do hope the rotten germ that’s afflicting you gives up soon. Be gloriously fragrant, everyone.

It’s heavenly! I’m so glad I brought it with me, especially since I thought it would be so hot in SA that I wouldn’t wear it much. Today is supposed to reach the mid-twenties, so I’ll be very interested to learn how it behaves, and how I react to it, in moderate heat.

I wear it in the heat all the time, since it´s never cold here. Just a tiny little dab, and it still lasts all day. The stuff is nuclear.

Testing Thierry Mugler Supra Floral, from Les Exceptions, today. To me, it’s an appealing warm, soft musk/ambery floral. (Or is it a floral musk/amber?) If I press my nose to my wrist, there is some green spiciness in there; perhaps that would be more evident had I sprayed more heavily.

It smells good: no unpleasant undertones, no spiky woods, nothing flat or sharp, neither too heavy nor too light. The idea of the collection is that they’ve realigned and modernized classic perfume ideas, and, as with Oriental Express, you could say that this is a streamlined version of some of the classic big florals.

I’m still feeling bitter about the unpleasant undertone that ruins the excellent idea of Hermes Rose Amazone, so I’m grateful that Supra Floral exists, despite the price. I’ll give it further testing.

I’m still out in LA helping out with my mother but may return back east for a week or 2 to restore my sanity. I was also sick my 1st week here but feel much better with just a bit of a cough now. Hope you feel better soon, Robin! I made my Haj to Scent Bar yesterday and sampled a bunch if stuff. Ended up walking out with SHL 777 Rose de Petra which has been on my wishlist for quite a while so that’s what I’m wearing today. I’m really enjoying its warm and cool, spicy, creamy readiness. It has a bit of leather which I never noticed in dabbing and makes it more interesting. No regrets so far. Now I have a lemming for 777 Une Nuit a Doha which is a yummy fennel/immortelle/tobacco.

That should be “rosiness”, not “readiness”.

I love all that I’ve tried from SHL 777! A bottle of Khol de Bahrein is on my wishlist, but those 2 are both wonderful.
      Great choice!

In Papillon Angelique. The scorcher of the weather today has made it disappear, so I will be switching to Kerosene Unknown Pleasures today to test it out

It starts citrusy, with a very creamy vanilla drydown. I like it but staying power on me is almost non-existent – 3 hours later I can barely smell it (hot weather? i am agnostic to it after a while?). For now – not a FB, but might test again.

Testing Memo Sham’s Oud vs Agonist White Oud. The White Oud gives me a bit of that chemical numb lips reaction. Sham’s Oud on the other hand, does very nicely for a linear type incensy woodie scent. I like it every time I sniff it.

I am sick of hot weather. Our weather people on the local news have made much over the cooler temps we are supposed to be having but it’s still in the mid 80s today and not the mid 70s as promised; granted, it’s not the 90s from last weekend but it’s still hotter than I like. I’m home for the rest of the day and just doused myself in Obsession, which I usually reserve for a snowy walk in the depths of winter and you know what? It is satisfying my desire for a rich cold weather perfume, smelling distinctive and spicy as usual. It’s a good thing I’m enjoying it as it will probably last through a shower and into tomorrow. Hope you feel better soon, Robin and everyone else under the weather.

Getting more spring-like here, though still far from warm. I’m contemplating Ninfeo Mio for today, to encourage the arrival of better weather.

I had a warm day here yesterday, Gaynor–22.5, just gorgeous. Today is supposed to get to 25, so the summer-weight clothes I brought will be useful after all.

Bois d’argent, which I last sampled in arctic winter (as in, when I took it to the nwt in February). Now I think it’s too wintry, but still beautiful on this sunny day of rehearsals and hectic transit. Still great, though.

Wearing Marc Jacobs Decadence today. I have not cared for any of his scents until now. Although I do like the original MJ on other people. Decadence I really like on me.

Terracotta for the first gray and rainy day in NYC in a long time. Do I need a backup #2 of this or have they made this a regular in the lineup?

Succumbed and bought my first Jo Malone today, Blue Agava & Cacao. It’s simply delicious but in a subtle, Jo Malone-ish way and it reminds me of a candy I used to eat as a child. In love.

It is back to summer temperatures so I’m in Bronze Goddess. Tomorrow is my hubby’s 50th birthday so I’m baking an orange cheesecake that seems to be taking forever in the oven. Last week was my birthday so I treated myself to Chanel #19 EDP.
