Tuesday scent of the day 9/1

Posted by Robin on 1 September 2015 188 Comments

school lunch

Ack, it's September already! What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

I'm wearing Diptyque Volutes.

Reminder: this Friday, 9/4, will be Back to School Friday...wear a perfume that says 'back to school' to you, or that says you mean business, or ....?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD: Memoir Man (Amouage). On an Amouage kick this week, things could be worse! 😉

I would feel more fine if I wasn’t having to get up at 6:15. I prefer summer to fall anyway but the school schedule makes it worse.

Volutes! The edt is a favorite of mine. You smell suitably fall-ish!

SOTD is Box of Eels. Ahhhh! Now just waiting (rather impatiently!) for some fall weather.

    I’m first! What fun!

That school lunch picture brings back memories – just about enough to turn my tummy!

Today I am sampling a couple vintage fragrances courtesy of a very generous Leathermountain!

On my left hand I am wearing Casaque, a warm very vintagy LOTV, which I am already regretting not knowing about decades ago – it is just lovely. This is warm, not fresh. No point in discussing a comparion with Diorissimo – these are different beasts. There is a more or less current “recreation” mentioned in the blogs which gets thoroughly panned. Tomorrow perhaps I will compare this to my current favorite LOTV, the Muguet Fleuri by Oriza L. Legrand.

On my right, I am wearing L’Aimant (sp) by Coty, which is probably the first “real perfume” I remember wearing in High school, lo these many many years ago. This as I remember, very soft and pretty, and regrettably not very long lasting on me.

Meredifay, I believe I owe you a reply regarding Neela Vermeire discovery set: you asked which one(s) I like. My personal favourite of the four is Trayee, I loved it from the first sniff already a couple of years ago. Mohur follows close behind: I prefer the parfum concentration (although I do not find the two very different, the parfum is just more intense), but it’s horribly expensive. Bombay Bling! is a fun, fun scent and I like it a lot. I probably wouldn’t buy a full bottle, but I will surely use up the 8 ml. Ashoka is the only one that doesn’t really work for me, it just refuses to come together on my skin. All are interesting, complex scents, well worth trying, if you haven’t.

FWIW, If I may chime in, I’ll say that I concur with your likes, although I’ve never tried Bombay Bling! Ashoka was a puzzling disappointment. Very glad I have samples of Mohur and Trayee and will replace when they’re gone.

BB! is a sunny, fruity, happy scent with a more interesting drydown than you’d expext from the description. You probably need to like mango and cardamom to like this – I love both.

Right now, I’m commando. Back to School this year meant sending Offspring the Younger (also Youngest) off to college 2 weeks ago. I’m still adapting. It feels like this radically different lifestyle might just need a different – or at least new – fragrance. I have a sample of Bois de Paradis that I might wear today, but just realized it’s going to be 90. Now, I dunno.

I’m torn between elation that summer isn’t over yet, and mild disappointment that the heat had to get so enthusiastic today.

Yep, you defininitely need a FB of something 🙂 Time to whip out the wish list and see if anything happens to be on sale (tell me I’m not the only one who does this). Unless, of course, you have your heart set on one particular scent at the moment.
BdP is wearable in the heat, I’ve done it, but I recommend no more than a cautious spray under your shirt.

My No. 19 edp (current version) doesn’t last nearly as long as my vintage edt. Odd, isn’t it?

I bought my mother a jar of No. 5 body creme a couple of years ago, and very often she wears a dab of it on her neck and wrists instead of the parfum I gave her for another occasion – and the body creme lasts for hours! She smells wonderful. She just told me last week that she was almost out, and would I please get her some more for Christmas. You bet, Mom. 🙂

Ooooh, No. 5 body creme may be my gateway to Chanel. Is the stable shelf life on the body products is as good as one would hope? I have fragranced lotion from other brands that faded after a year.

I’ve grown into an appreciative relationship with No. 5 and have been wondering if I should splash out and buy a bottle. I hesitate because it took me well over a year to use up a small decant of EdP. A little dab does it for me, so the body creme may be just the thing.

You might be able to find a small mini-size sample of the body creme on ebay – I saw one the other day when I was looking for the large 5 oz jar (retail it’s about $120, but I found one for $80). I paid about $75 two years ago when Parfum1 was having a sale, and they just HAPPENED to have the creme – they don’t have it now, I looked. 🙁

Even though I purchased it from the discounter and it’s been two years ago, Mom still smells great Can’t swear on the shelf life, but I can say that that particular jar seems to have lasted for some time.

Whoa! That photo traumatized me. (((shudder)))

My SOTD is Mimosa and Cardamom by Jo Malone from a sample from Nordstrom.

I LOVE Diptyque Essences Insensees Mimosa. It’s one of my favorite perfumes. Positives: It touches me (gently) in a positive way at the gut-level; very high-quality ingredients; it does not smell like perfume. Negative: It lasts about three hours on my skin.

Jo Malone Mimosa and Cardamom: Positives: After testing it twice, it’s a strong like for me. It lasts much longer than the Diptyque. Negatives: It smells a little bit like perfume. I don’t smell any cardamom.

Eeek! I was just huffing my arm, and a co-worker just walked by my cubicle and saw me. I look extra strange because I don’t spray the inside of my wrist (my skin is too sensitive there); I spray the outside of my lower arm, so I look pretty weird :-0

I checked today and the Euro to US dollar conversion rate is becoming more attractive! 1.25 to 1.00. When the dollar is strong that means that all the full bottles of perfume one covets only found on European websites become somewhat affordable! I am still chasing my Scent on Canvas Noir de Mars. $185 with shipping down from over $250 less then 30 days ago. I am an economist. A Perfume Economist. I think it could go lower. Embracing my inner fragrancefund manager today and enjoying the Lush Breath of God lingering in my shirt from yesterday.

I bought that Scent on Canvas sampler last year and enjoyed it, by and large – the Ocre Dore’ is a straight-up Oriental, which is a genre I can’t manage, and the Blanc de Paris was harsh on me in a way that I usually get with linden notes. But I liked the others very well, particularly Brun Sicilien which I found surprisingly comfortable.

So – I hope you get your Noir de Mars!

My ‘discovery set’ (I feel compelled to put ds in quotes) from Bruno Fazzolari arrived yesterday. Sprayed a tiny bit of Five on the back of my hand when I went to bed. A nice cologne for those who love traditional citrus colognes, I mean the style/notes of “men’s colognes,” not the strength of the juice. More herby perhaps, and a little ozonic in the middle, and this morning my hand smells a little like sweet hay. Very nice.

I am so sad that the summer is ending! We had such an amazing summer and the best one I’ve had in years. I do this thing with my daughter (who is 7) when I pretend to very dramatically cry, and say, Whaaa! the summer is over, I am so sad, I love the pool, my flowers will die, etc, etc. And she laughs and says, don’t worry mommy, it will be back next year. And then I think, god willing, right? We still have to make it through a miserable winter!

A very good morning to all. My SOTD isn’t, yet, ‘cos it’s nowhere near my day yet to have a scent of: 2.05 a.m. and I can’t sleep. I can smell the tag-end of Chergui from yesterday–man, that baby has staying power! It’s interesting: if Chergui were a guest at a party, I’d be thrilled to see her arrive, but after a few hours of much the same conversation, desperate to ring a taxi for her so that she could go away again. So, whatever I do wear, it will be as unlike Chergui as I can find: 19, maybe, or Chamade. Even Nahema. Dunno. Hey, have a wonderfully scented day, everyone.

It happens sometimes, doesn’t it? I simply can’t stop thinking. Maddening, especially since I’m going to the ballet tonight, and I don’t want to fall asleep during the second act. That’s just too ageing to contemplate!

There must be something in the Universe right now because I also have been waking up for the past few nights at 2 am on the dot. This is ok but I struggle to slip back into the arms of sleep. Maybe the change of seasons. I will try some lavender EO under my nose tonight. May you slumber peacefully tonight waterdragon, after the ballet.

I did that! It wasnt cool. I dragged my then bf to HMS Pinafore (which as you might imagine thrilled him to bits) because I Like Musicals. (And ballet and opera and all those theatre-y entertainments that none of my friends or family like) Except I was a shift worker and try as I might I simply couldnt keep my eyes open. I wasnt popular. And it was far more lively than ballets usually are, so I hope you make it til the end! Which one is it?

The Royal NZ Ballet is doing A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I’ve been looking forward to it forever–I love dance. And enjoy it I will, even if I have to rush home from work today and take a nana-nap before dinner! It’s my shout to my wonderful teaching team, and I would be MORTIFIED if I fell asleep in their company.

And Chergui replies: “Well, if you would go to sleep like you should, you wouldn’t even know I was here. And in the morning (I mean proper morning) I will be almost gone!” (She is a little defensive as she wouldn’t actually need a taxi having not drunk all that much and her very own very nice car is parked just down the street!)

Hmmm…you know her better then I do, but reckon she must have put away a fair bit to keep droning on and on like this. She was fun when she started, but now I’d rather listen to the collected speeches of our Prime Minister. Well, almost. I favour the taxi!

I’m sampling Aleksandr this morning from one of those samples that I didn’t know I had. It’s not in the database (!) so I haven’t a clue from whence it sprang. It’s maybe not what I was in the mood for but I like it enough to give it a real wear sometime.
It is still predictably hot here but the light is changing and I’m in a fall mood. I wore Ambre Russe to bed last night and I’m contemplating topping off with it later. Actually, I’m in the mood for SSS Ambre Noir but I can’t find my little travel sprayer or my sample 🙁 and have been looking for about a year now. When she puts the cart back up I must re-order.
I’m really dragging this morning. My husband was out of town and the girl kittens wouldn’t settle down. I felt so bad for Newburg, who was exhausted from playing in the sink for hours, that I let him sleep with me – which means I didn’t sleep. It was nice to cuddle a cat even if it wasn’t the same as poor old Bat.

I think I will go another round with the feral white florals this week since it is still hot enough to enjoy them!

Thank you very much. I’m not giving up hope but signs point to his being gone for good and I’m doing my best to get my head around it. I won’t stop searching though. Cats are born survivors and much less outdoor-adept cats have beaten greater odds.
I will, however, accept this sign that we need to keep Newburg and not try to find him a home. He has as much intelligence and personality as Bat had at his age and I was worried about finding someone who was patient enough for a really smart cat. He’s not a replacement and I wouldn’t want one but he has the same spark and charm – when I left the kittens at the vet, all the staff were arguing over who got to cuddle him and he was eating it up.

Okay. Double dipping in the comments department. But, I applied Lampblack this morning and am really enjoying it. My overly simplistic impression (that I will probably regret moments after I hit “post comment”) is that it is a comforting combination of Bulgari Black and Encre Noir, but better because a perfumer created the scent rather than a mere human layering with ignorant abandon. I am also a little reminded of Le Labo’s Patchouli, which doesn’t smell like patchouli at all but like birch tar. Definitely not a summer scent. Here we go fall…. whoooweeee…..

I really, really like this JS! I discovered a sample of it that I really didn’t know that I had from some swap or something. I’ve been judiciously using it b/c it’s almost gone. I keep thinking I need to track down a bottle. It’s so plushy, elegant, feminine. I get some of that lovely base that’s also in the famous Sacrebleu, which I can’t smell all that well. But for me with JS it’s a very light sweet rose and other vague florals – almost even some sort of dark civety note on that oriental base. Lovely. I wish I could still get one of those cute 1 oz bottles!

I have a ton of smaller decants for TF – FB are just unaffordable 🙂
I really like Tobacco Vanille – I think this is for now at least (which all might change tomorrow) the favorite TF.
Jasmine Rouge is really nice and complex, but I can least cannot smell it on myself, so have to nag a friend and a co-worker to sniff me – which results in weird looks from the rest of the office.
Now I am craving Amber Absolu – I tried it a couple of days ago at Neiman’s while my son was re-arranging the whole TF display and spraying me with other things and did not like it. Once I tried the sample at home without little hands helping me, I like it more and debating how I can swing it.

On a gardenia kick for these last few days, which means I dug out my bottle of Annick Goutal’s Gardenia Passion today…its a strange one and I don’t wear it frequently, but September of not, it’s nearly 90 damn degrees these days so tropical scents it is.

This reminds me that I blind-ordered a bottle of Madonna’s Truth or Dare last night in a fit of what must have been temporary insanity, since I won no celeb scents and have no desire to…I was sucked in by the descriptions of creamy gardenia and the insanely cheap price. I guess I’ll see how THAT turns out…

Whoops, I OWN no celeb scents, not won. Sorry.

I’ve got one by Jessica Simpson– Fancy Nights. It was a blind buy on the strength of a warm-ish review somewhere, and it turns out that I really rather like it for weekends and walks and things. Easy stuff. Hope your celubscent works out as well.

I think I might have gotten super lucky with Dior Mitza – they briefly had it available for purchase yesterday. I am keeping my fingers crossed that my order goes through – I ended up buying up a ginormious bottle that would last me lifetime – swaps anyone? 😉

Wearing Dior Addict for what might as well be the first day of fall. This is a new bottle. I know it’s been reformulated, but this seems ridiculous. I have sprayed one million sprays and it just disappears. I’m going to have to take it back.

Oh no! That makes me sad. Addict used to be long lasting and wonderful. I hate when they turn perfumes into weak, pale versions of their former selves.

Wearing DK Cashmere Mist Liquid Nude. Have two bottles, absolutely a lifetime’s worth of this scent. Define fall/winter/spring thing, and i might be a tad early with it. The lily of the Valley and musk are giving me pause. But, it’s overall lovely and my mood is such that nothing would sit right. Edgy, i feel edgy. Not cute, fun, hip edgy. Slightly cranky, “everything’s fine, thanks, now go away” edgy. Hopefully my pizza lunch will even things out. 😀

Way late, just in case anyone is curious: the pizza worked its magic!

Finally went to Sephora the other day and got to sample Jardin de Monsieur Li, so that is my SOTD. Just reread Robin’s review – it is very gauzy and I like it. Maybe not FBW, but if I can find one of those little travel bottles, I might just snap it up.

I’m sampling Fior di Lilla from Borsari 1870. It smells like a potent air freshener. Maybe it’s for tourists? Part of a little set of minis, in a compact-type case with a mirror. I like the name so much.

Testing Dior Sauvage (the Johnny Depp fronted scent). Pleasant bergamot, pepper, vague sweet fruit and the woody/amber scent of ambroxan. Nice, but unexciting. The perfect scent to wear when you want something unobtrusive and discrete.
The boys at Basenotes are in a tizzy about it. LOL YMMV 😉

In a tizzy good, or in a tizzy bad? I still have not smelled it.

I had forgotten to put anything on when I walked out the door this morning, so I fished a small decant of Boucheron EDT out of my purse and went with that. I’m not 100% sure why I even had it.. I think I was going to give it to my mom and then decided against it. Anyway, I almost regretted the choice this morning because the aldehydes (I think) were getting to me. It’s fine now, though.

Goodness, our school lunches looked better than that even in the 1980s.

Anyway, it’s still summer for awhile in my mind. Today I’m wearing Hermès Calèche Fleurs de Méditerranée, which had been forgotten on one of my shelves for far too many months.
