Thursday scent of the day 8/20

Posted by Robin on 20 August 2015 121 Comments

Ambre Solaire, vintage advert

Happy National Lemonade Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Parfums de Nicolaï Musc Monoï.

Reminder: this Friday, 21 August, wear a scent by French niche brand Parfums de Nicolaï, if you have one. If you don't, wear a perfume by another brand that you think deserves more attention than it gets.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

today it’s Houbigant Oranger en Fleurs.

random PSA: On the Dior website I selected ‘alert me’ when Mitzah comes back in stock. I’m letting the Mitzah-lovers out there know that I did receive an email from Dior, they have Mitzah in stock, and I already received my (big) bottle last evening. I will have a very happy ambery scented fall-winter ahead of me!

There are a few reviews of Mitzah on the perfume blogs. It’s part of Dior’s La Collection. It’s a gorgeous amber oriental that is easy to wear. I love the more unusual/edgy amber orientals but I can’t wear these to the office (such as AG Ambre Fetiche, PdE Ambre Russe or even SL Ambre Sultan). I find Dior Mitzah to be gorgeous but in a simple and approachable way — similar to HdP Ambre 114 but less powdery. Some found Mitzah to be boring – I found it to be exactly the type of amber oriental I needed – one that was high quality, elegant and wearable at the office or anywhere but still pleases me. Hope that helps!

            jjlook,
yes, I do. I no longer have any of my previous bottle before it was discontinued but from memory this smells exactly the same.

I am confused though. Apprently it has been discontinued but from time to time it IS available directly from Dior…?

I’m not wearing Mitzah today, but I am wearing Ambre Nuit which I’ve heard is similar to Mitzah and the most beautiful rose amber scent ever! I do wish it would last a little longer than it does, but it’s not that bad.

      Yay Dior!

I don’t find them super similar fwiw — Mitzah I find closer to Shalimar.

Thanks to Merlin, I’ve had a few weeks with Mitzah. It’s the closest I’ve ever come to a signature scent, as I literally wore it day after day, until I drained the decant. Mitzah is so smooth and luxurious and for me, filled with positive energy.

Yup sounds right to me. I suppose I should say I like Mitzah despite a personal vendetta against Shalimar, but I do think Mitzah’s “texture”, especially, has more in common with Shalimar than with Ambre Nuit. AN was a little bit watery on me. (Which I can def understand some folks regarding as a virtue–partly a matter of whether you’re looking for a thicker amber, or not so much.)

I don’t find Mitzah similar to Ambre Nuit either. Oddly, even though Ambre Nuit has “amber” in the same, it’s much less about amber to me. And I also find Ambre Nuit more masculine.

Rubj EDP for me. I don’t even know what I’m smelling, I would never call it a floral scent, it’s just animalic on me and not really nice or pretty or beautiful, but I get such a distinct craving for it, I might eventually empty my big sample and actually consider buying more.

I’m so jealous! On me, Rubj is mostly fruit and I get nothing animalic. Noses are funny like that, I guess. Rozy and Onda, on the other hand, I absolutely get cravings for, even though I don’t always find them pleasant.

Lucky you! I haven’t tried it and am kicking myself for not blind buying it during her clearance, but I couldn’t buy every scent available 🙁 Even the things I wasn’t sure I would like are gorgeous and wearable. I really miss her mixed media collection and hope she feels inspired to re-release a few favorites.

She’s been revamping her site daily but some of the mixed media will be back according to her blog, including Carpathian Oud but I don’t know if it’ll be the cologne form (according to reviews the demiabsolute was different and I never tried that one). Fingers crossed and if it does show up again then I’ll be pouncing on backup bottles

No. In fact, I found his collar this afternoon and we are very afraid we should be searching for a little body. We will keep looking, of course, but the clasp hadn’t broken away and it had what seemed to be old blood on it. I’ve been having a good cry and the kittens are most concerned about my sanity. Tomorrow we have to be out of town so the search will continue on Saturday. Thank you for asking.

Sounds like a PdN week! I’m in Diorissimo this morning – wanted clean and pretty. Still dragging because I was sound asleep when the alarm went off – that’s rare. I think it’s allergies from the humidity here in NYC. (I call these “iron poor blood” days….)

So proud of my sister! She’s in Chicago and managed a visit to Barneys. Came away with Byredo Mojave Ghost and three vials from FM – Lys Med, Carnal Flower and POAL! Hmmm…. wonder if she’ll do damage going to N-M today also.

I’ve been sampling Musc Monoi this week. It’s got a lot of Calone, which kind of threw me. I’ve been having 90s flashbacks. Still on the fence about that one.

I’m in Atelier Ambre Nue today, which will def work better in cold weather. Now it just needs to get cold!

I was expecting a Terracotta/Bronze Goddess type of thing and to me it’s more of a 90s beachy scent. Remember CK Escape? I wore it obsessively in high school. MM is a far better scent than Escape, but I guess the calone note brings it to mind.

Have you tried Juste un Reve? I think that might be more what I’m looking for.

I’m starting PdN Friday early with Odalisque. This is only my second wearing, but I can tell it’s going to be wonderful in the fall/winter – amber-y goodness with a hint of a melon note at the very beginning that lends the whole a tropical/banana-esque aura (not really banana, but you all know what I mean). The dry down is sheer beauty, and I’m looking forward to it soothing me later today

CSP Vanille Ambre. Today is probably too muggy for something so warm and vanillic, but it’s just so darned cheerful! It’s the lightest amber I know of, so if you have to wear an amber in the depths of summer, this is the one.

I canNOT believe they discontinued it. Fendi had an AMAZING stable of scents — Asja, Life Essence, Theorema, Fendi (original), Fendi Uomo: I’m sure there were others I never got to try that were good, like Theorema Uomo, and even Fan di Fendi wasn’t bad at all. And they just threw them all away!

Musc Maori today. I smell deliciously chocolaty, though I’m struggling yet again with the musk making my throat scratchy. It’s a shame because I’ve encountered a number of scents I liked, but that basically just choked me. I wish I knew which musk had this effect (I hope it’s not a lot of them).

I’m retesting PdN Number One on one wrist and still finding it very very soapy (it’s the orange blossom. sigh.) – and on the other is Just une Reve, which seems more musky than I remembered it.

SOTD is Fragrance Republic 01/06 – lime, fig, vetiver, sandalwood. This has been one of my favorite scents this summer. Might have to get the bigger bottle of this one.

Lolita Lempicka for me today. This was an unfortunate blind buy (yes, it was mainly for the bottle). It isn’t unpleasant and what I can smell, I like, but there’s something here that I seem to be kind of anosmic too, methinks. I hear this is a powerhouse, but all I get is a very faint sugared violet. There are moments when It fades out altogether, but I sense that there must be something there like a ghost in the room. Very eerie.

I love LL, but not sure I’d call it a powerhouse. It’s mostly anise(Good n Plenty) initially but quickly dries down to a soft vanilla. It actually doesn’t last super long on me. Maybe there’s a musk in there you don’t register? Those bottles are very alluring.

It’s much cooler here today so I brought out Fracas for some great tuberose. I love my tuberoses!

Tomorrow’s PdN will depend on the weather–I’m tempted by Odalisque but may go with something else…I was surprised by how many of her scents I have.

I should actually own more PdNs, given how much I like them and how decently priced they generally are.

Was at the dentist this morning, and can’t ingest food til the anaesthetic wears off. I could really go for some lemonade right now…

Wearing Ael-Mat, which is a lovely bit of summer frippery, just right for today.

Today, 24 years ago, Estonia regained its indpendence, so we are celebrating over here. I went to a promenade (an event with lots of walking, live music, hats and cafes) in a park near my childhood home. The residence of the Estonian president used to be there after the WW1, before it was burnt down in WW2 by the Soviet army and then blown up for good measure by the Germans a couple of years later. The park was a bit neglected during the occupation, but has now been beautifully restored – although not finished yet and pretty wild in places. And I accidentally provided you with a pretty accurate metaphor for the last 100 years of Estonian history.

I wore Mohur extrait, as it’s the most special scent I have with me.

No, not yet ( and not really in a hurry to get back). Btw, this day is not the official independence day – that’s on 24 February, marking the first time we announced a free state, in 1918. But I guess we deserve two days off, especially considering that we hardly have any religious holidays 🙂

Is the second Independence Day the date when the USSR broke in pieces? Can that have been 24 years ago?! Whatever the occasion, your celebration is much lovelier than our July 24, likely because more recent and meaningful.

You are right, although it’s not the last day of USSR, just the last day of us being a part of it. The process of becoming independent had of course started earlier, but it was one day after the military coup (that later failed) that our republic was declared.

Hello, everyone. I’m in PdN Sacrebleu Intense, and its happy melange of fruit and vanilla and incense is filling the apartment. My husband said, “Err….?” when he got a whiff of me, so I’ve obviously been too generous with my spraying, but it will have softened and diminished a little by the time I go to work. And if doesn’t, well, there are worse things in the world than one spray too many of Sacrebleu. It’s perfect for the cold but bright day that is about to dawn here.

Wearing PdN New York, from one of the oldest niche bottles I have. Lovely, as always, and surprisingly weather-appropriate, given that it’s raining to beat the band, so things are cooling down.

Have you smelled it side by side with more recent iterations of New York? I got my bottle somewhere in 2008 I think. Such a stunning fragrance. Sorry about your rain, but plants will be happy.

My bottle is maybe from 2006? Not quite sure. I haven’t smelled any of the more recent versions — I’ve been afraid to, in case they made me sad. 🙁

Don’t mind the cooling off, actually, it was way too hot and muggy yesterday.

I’m wearing this, too. From the very first crop of samples I bought when I first started to get nutty about scents. Still think it’s great, still don’t know if it’s perfect for me (it gets more muddy on my skin less spicy) but I would love to smell this on the person sitting next to me.

SOTD is Honore des Pres Sexy Angelic, which I liked the first time I tried it but dismissed as not at all “me”… Turns out, if it’s appealing enough, I’m willing to be flexible on what constitutes me-ness! Totally woke up with an itch for it.

And as a bonus, in looking for my sample, I also found an I Love Les Carottes sample I didn’t realize I had in my possession! Excited to try that next.

SOTD Sutra Ylang by Bois 1920 from a sample. The more I wear this scent, the more I like it. Craving fall. I may need a decant of this for the fall.

I’m wearing Safran Troublant today; it’s one of my favorite ‘bridge’ scents as summer transitions into fall. Alas, it’s still rather hot here in Denver, but I can close my eyes and imagine those mid-60s days of late September if I try. Unlike most L’Artisans, ST lasts all day on me, and it’s one of my go-to scents on days when I just can’t decide what I’m in the mood to wear. It’s never a wrong choice.
