Wednesday scent of the day 7/22

Posted by Robin on 22 July 2015 241 Comments

Curtain of Green

Happy Wednesday! What fragrance did you pick for today?

I'm wearing Dawn Spencer Hurwitz's Le Jardin Vert.

Reminder: this Friday, 7/24, will be Perfume Surprise Friday...wear a fragrance you expected to hate but loved, or, give another chance to a perfume you expected to love but hated, or surprise us with another interpretation of "perfume surprise".

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Started off with the teeniest spritz of Terracotta to see if I had a different response to it. Nope. Big mistake! This was a blind buy that was an epic fail and I don’t see that changing in the future, sadly.

Scrub a dub dub and then for something bracing and beautiful:
AG Ninfeo Mio. That’s more like it 🙂

Lush Sikkim Girls for me. No point in trying to fight the heat at this point, I might as well pretend I’m in a tropical paradise.

Sorry, this went to the wrong place.

But Ninfeo Mio is a great summer scent. Too bad Terracotta doesn’t work for you.

Deva, Terracotta doesn’t work for me, either. I have had a couple of epic failure blind buys, and I’m glad to have learned that lesson! Luckily, you’ll have no problem swapping Terracotta.

Same here, I bought a large decant of Terracotta and it didn’t work for me at all. But I had no problem finding it a new home!

I’m living off the last little bit of Shalimar Ode a la Vanille right now but haven’t figured out what I will wear post shower. But I think that I do need to spend more time with Box of Eels. All I remember is it being a typical Chanel but that’s it.

Update on the PayPal thing, I did get my money back to my account. Evilbay was telling me that it could take up to 30 days before I saw my money. Needless to say, I’m happy that it went into my bank account sooner.

Hey you fig lovers! Was at Whole Foods this AM spending too much money on groceries and picked up a liquid hand soap by Nourish Organic, ‘Fresh Fig.’ I don’t enjoy fig perfumes for the most part, but I do love the scent of figs… this soap smells terrific. Not very strong; you won’t be wearing it after washing your hands…

SOTD is Parfums d’ Empire Wazamba. Completely out of tune with the weather but I like the way the heat warms the balsamic notes.

And the price is pretty reasonable, too. You smelled wonderful all day
SOTD is sample of Reve en Cuir. Mmmmmmm

SOTD is AdP Iris Nobile EDT again – still deeply in love with this. Hubby loves it too – he likes to pretend that he can distinguish individual notes, which I don’t think he really can, but he is definitely able to tell when I’m wearing the same perfume two days in a row (which, for a “guy” type of guy, is rather surprising).

My husband has the following categories: Hubba hubba!, (Iris Poudre and Prada Iris – good!); Not quite hubba hubba (Séville à l’Aube – good enough); a complete failure to notice (wear as I please) and What’s that? (Parfum Sacree, unfortunately, and other skanky things seem to smell far more skanky to him than they do to me – I do not see Onda in my future)

That’s a great, unusual scent; based on its description, I scored FB of the old formula (judging from the bottle design) on eB a while ago and I cannot quite make up my mind if/when to wear it. It’s, strangely, both tropical and rather cozily, toasty warm. It lasted ages on a paper blotter, with a distinctive raisin note. Is your sample fairly new, and likely from the new formulation..?

It’s at least 5 years old – from back when it was still called Coeur de Raisin – but I don’t know anything about the reformulation history. I wonder if it’s different from yours though because I don’t get anything warm from it – though of course that’s pretty subjective – and smell tart fresh grapiness rather than raisins.

Mine seemed rather raisin-centric, yes, but I you’re right, they did change the name at some point, so we are likely using similar formulas.. I need to smell it again soon, and give it some time on the skin.

And I should give it a few more hours before I declare it unraisiny… It would be a neat trick if they made it go from grape to raisin as it dries down – almost a perfume pun!

Makes me want to smash the radio on the floor, but that may be a/c stress related. And I have a mini infestation of…little winged ants! Fortunately they’re quite feeble and easily wiped out with a damp paper towel. Have put out a bunch of ant traps. Deep breath and CSP’s Pamplemousse.

You know, I think I can detect it just because I know it’s supposed to be there, but not sure I’d recognize it as cilantro if I didn’t know to look for it. It has a nice green, herbal opening and then I get a lot of iris from it too.

It is most gorgeous. De Bachmakov is one of those scents I bought because I sensed: this is going to change my life! Anyone else have those scent epiphanies too? It kind of ends up NOT changing one’s life …. or maybe it does. We’ll never know!

I wouldn’t have sought it out either but I got an unexpected sample in a freebie package (from Hajusuuri). It does smell foody(savory) but there’s just somethin’ about it. And it’s definitely unique. But you’re right. Curiosity will kill the bank account…

Forget any misconceptions you may have about it. It is unique and intoxicating. The combo doesn’t sound like it would work well together, it just does. Although you have read several good things about it, there are people who dislike it a lot as well. I guess it is a different experience for each individual. Pear & Olive is like an acquired taste; you either love it or hate it. Most perfumistas like it though.

SOTD: Dior La Collection New Look 1947

I’m wearing New Look 1947 because I’m trying to find a replacement for my *beloved* Love, Chloe. I still can’t believe Love, Chloe was discontinued…..it’s so classy and tasteful for a mainstream. Anyway, I’m looking for something similar so I got a split of 1947. So far today 1947 is all powdery on me and nothing else. Love, Chloe is somewhat powdery but there’s much more going on. So this is a miss. I’ll finish my split of 1947 because I don’t hate it but it’s definitely not a replacement for Love, Chloe.

Any thoughts on something similar to Love, Chloe? I only have one back-up bottle… I think Balenciaga Paris is in the same genre, and I have that, but nearly loved it as much as the Chloe.

    ((SIGH))

You might be able to get there by layering – Love, Chloe has all those violets and powder. I think it would be relatively easy to find a powder fragrance that “got there”, and then to find a nice violet fragrance that you could layer…? I have a very large sample size of Love, Chloe that I’d be happy to send to you. I got it in a swap, and it’s OK for me, but I never wear it.

That’s so nice of you! But no worries. I already have 1/2 a bottle and also a full back up bottle.

So interesting….I don’t think Love, Chloe has much violet note, if any. It’s mostly a powdery/(but not baby powder) orange blossom with a bit of chewy heliotrope/lilac/white musk in the dry down.

Thanks for the offer though. Very kind. You must have also gone through the discontinuation of a beloved before (these seem to be occurring more rapidly for me!)

I was having an urge for an oriental this morning – it’s not too hot here- but I really struggled with a “summer” oriental. Not the norm. I don’t even know what I’d consider a summer oriental, or if I’d have it! I ended up putting on some just a little bit of vintage Nahema edp, but it was too thick. So now I’ve layered with some Guerlain eau Imperiale. The lime and herbs are really doing to trick to balance the peach/rose. Phew. I should have just picked No 19 in the first place rather than challenging myself!

Another Ineke today, Gilded Lily. Pretty and easy to wear, which is good because it is HOT and muggy and we are cleaning out the workshop, pump room, garage, and tool storage area of the tractor shed. Somehow, Mom has managed to hoard a lot of garbage on the pegboards and in the drawers and the tools are never where they should be. This is not a fun job and there is a fair amount of arguing about whether we need to keep the broken part to the thing we don’t have anymore and the ancient decaying hoses, padlocks with no keys, little twists of wire, etc.

It’s one of my perfumes most complimented by strange men, not just perfect strangers but really some weird ones that I am vaguely acquainted with. It’s a nice, mildly fruity-floriental to me but that’s probably because of the little bit of patchouli. Patch sometimes kills me to actually wear and always triggers my labeling something oriental. I don’t get huge lily nor lots of pineapple and certainly not Oakmoss (but, I could bathe in the stuff so more sensitive palates may detect some). It’s one I recommend if you are an Ineke fan, certainly has her signature style and very wearable year round in Texas, but probably too light for winter in Chicago.

Wearing Caleche and feeling on top of my game!

Last night I did a side-by-side comparison of Arquiste’s L’Etrog and AG Eau d’Hadrien. I had thought they were quite similar when wearing them separately, but next to each other, AG blew Arquiste out of the water! AG was SOOOOOOO much more lemony. They had a similar longevity, although AG had the stronger sillage (still not huge, just a bit more than Arquiste.) They both have a somewhat woody drydown, and I think this was the only area where Arquiste had an advantage. I definitely preferred its drydown. I will not be purchasing either at the moment (still working through my samples of both), but when the time comes, it’ll definitely be AG.

I recently did a similar test with vintage Eau d’Hadrien and Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil. I had thought they might be similar but they’re not. Vintage Ed’H is better in every way, but I’m not sure if the same can be said of the current, attenuated version.

I get so much of a thick woody quality out of JSLN – must the the fig accords – that it really changes for me during development. EdH – all lemon and herbs!

Noz, Hadrien and Jardin are so different to my nose (both current formulations), it would never have occurred to me to put them side by side. I’ll have to try it.

Ann, if you get woody from Jardin, you’d probably really enjoy L’Etrog. It’s a nice scent, just not the lemon blast I was hoping for.

Wrist to wrist comparisons are the best! It lets you whittle down the sample stash to the things that really work for you. It is for me a good way to determine what I really want to purchase. Right now my baseline frag is VC&A Bois d’Iris. If it doesn’t smell better than that I don’t buy it!

Such a beautiful day here in Virginia (still a bit hot but not as humid), and I’m working from home with the windows flung open. SOTD is Jour Ensoleillé layered with a bit of A la Nuit to emphasize the jasmine. Perfect!

Seeing all of those green leaves in the picture made me think of all of the green perfumes that I own. But I had already spritzed myself with my scent of the day, SL Fleurs de Oranger, so maybe tomorrow I’ll have to go with something like Vent Vert or Diptique Eau de Lierre.

SOTD for me is Byredo Pulp — I bought the travel vial set of this a few years ago and don’t reach for it often, but today seemed like the right day! I really appreciate Robin’s review of Pulp, and I agree that it is a fun juicy fig scent!

I have a hard time with Byredo — I also own (and love!) Flowerhead but I feel like it’s not a typical Byredo scent. Every time I’m at the counter the salesperson wants me to try Gypsy Water, and I am always underwhelmed! Don’t even get me started on Mojave Ghost. Bal d’Afrique is nice, though.

I really like Pulp a lot! Just a fabulous burst of fruity goodness! I don’t reach for my decant of this that much either. I need to. I am trying so hard to appreciate Gypsy Water ( been eyeing the hair perfume for a bit now). And, like you, Mojave Ghost IS NOT FOR ME! LOL!

It seems my annual late summer intense rose cravings have come early this year! I’m slathered in Pre de Provence Rose de Mai lotion, burned a Rose candle last night, and will probably need to pick up some rose water to use in tea. When this craving hits it hits hard. Also waiting impatiently for a blind buy of Tocade to arrive in the mail- I try to avoid blind buys but in this case a big bottle costs about as much as a sample.

I just tested Tocade and Arpege in a store here. I sprayed them close together and I liked the overlap. The Tocade had a nice cozy, vanilla powdery drydown that I liked. Might order a sample(although true about the low cost of FB) Hope you like it!

Trying out a sample of Dame Perfumery Pear Water Lily and Amber after it was mentioned favorably the other day. It’s my least-liked out of the edt samples I’ve tried, but then I don’t care for water lily as a fragrance note and that’s what I mostly smell. Cassis Rose and Sandalwood is my favorite of the Dame edt’s thus far.

I’m wearing Aqua Allegoria Flora Neroli bath oil on the dry skin of my shins. I got it in the Freebiemeet a few years ago from the lovely and generous Hajusuuri. After an initial blast of neroli, it turns to jasmine on me and I get lovely wafts of fragrance as I walk.

I reached into my sample box this morning to wear something a bit different today. My SOTD is Versace Bright Crystal Absolute. To my surprise, I really like this a lot. I’m sure I like it because of the peony, amber, and musk. The top, fruity notes blend in well with the others. I want to see how long it will last on me. I can’t stop smelling my wrists!

Another bad sampling day for me: gs03 from biehlparfumtwerks (I have not learned perfume German). I grudgingly admit that it’s much nicer than it was the first time I sampled it, now rather pleasantly fruity-citrus-fresh, but still smelling synthetic.

Next shower is not far off, and I’m doing a 90s week, so I’ll go on to something like Laguna, Insensé, or French Lime Blossom.

Last night for 90s week I wore Bulgari Black to bed and was disappointed that it didn’t work for me, an unfortunate first.

It does smell better on my wife! It just didn’t smell gloriously of car tire rubber with whipped cream on top, like it usually does. It was like the notes came apart and back together again into a different form, more distinct anise, altogether sharper, and definitely not restful. Instead of in a well-worn garage in summer, stopping by with my ice cream cone to visit with neighbors, I felt like I was at the tire plant doing quality control with a difficult boss at the other end of my day.

Hi, lovely NST-ers. I love your choices, and have added more names to my list of perfumes to hunt down and try when I am able.

My scent today is Jubilation 25, just because it can be. J25 was one of my very first purchases down here in the rabbit hole, and for reasons I don’t understand, I tend to hoard it. I’ve decided that’s just silly: things can spoil, tastes can change. From now on, if I think I’d like to wear the precious ones on an ordinary day in the office or cleaning the oven at home, I will. I’m in charge: see me spray…(maybe not cleaning the oven!)

You are so right about wearing a particular scent whenever you want. The other day I was looking at some perfumes and one caught my eye. The SA told me that a particular fragrance I picked up should only be worn on special occasions. I told her that I wear my perfumes whatever the occasion. My mom also tells me not to use my good perfume just to go to the store or to have lunch w/friends. If I want to wear Misia or Cristalle to the gym, so be it. Life is short……….enjoy things whenever you wish.

Yes, I think you’re right. Love ’em, use ’em, and accept that when they are gone, they’re gone, but the memories will stay. And if there!s one thing I’ve learned down here in the rabbit hole, there will ALWAYS be another gorgeous perfume to find, learn and love.

Yep–as I advance rapidly (and fairly happily) towards my third age, I appreciate being conscious. Tell you what else I like these days: feeling quizzical. I sometimes think my most useful accessory would be a thought bubble filled with question marks coming out of the top of my head. Is there a noun from “quizzical”? Quizzicality? Whatever, I have acquired this commodity in bucketfuls as I’ve got older, and my quizzical speculations amuse me very much.

According to google there is in fact a noun, quizzicality!

As a dyed in the thread skeptic I don’t need a bubble emerging from my head. My eyebrows tend to the same thing – even when I would prefer it if they didn’t 😀

J25 is one of my favorites! My cats seem to enjoy this one as well. Have you noticed that with yours? My favorite time to wear it lately is when I get home, put on my comfy clothes, spray it on, and then take a liesurely walk outside(in the heat-it’s fantastic in the heat) smelling my arms at frequent intervals. When I get busy at work, I tend to forget to smell and by the time things wind down, the scent is gone!

It’s a bit hard to tell what Dakkie enjoys, apart from Temptations, his knitted mice and being warm. I think the world is a place of wonderment and deep uncertainty for poor Dakkus-Dog-Hoople, and by the time he’s registered a stimulus, it’s already gone beyond recall. His mother, Isabella, is a sympathetic creature and she responds to moods and perfumes, but this morning, she stayed in her bed (it’s C4 degrees; who can blame her?) so I don’t know what she’ll think of J25. I’ll have to observe & report back..

Am wearing Amyris from a very generous decant sent to me by NSTer C.H. Haven’t seen her around these parts lately… hope all is well in her neck of the woods. As for the Amyris, it reminds me a little of Prada’s Infusion D’Iris…actually there is some iris in there somewhere, but it is not the scent so much as the “clean, freshness” without the squeak that it shares with the Prada. Amyris has some greeny snap and lemony vetiver as well.

Alarmed by Bois de Jasmin’s comment the other day that her bottle of FM L’Eau d’Hiver had turned, I hunted down my sample and wore it this morning. Mine still smells great, but I do wish it had more “oomph.” Too much JCE understatement for me, I guess. This afternoon, I dabbed on some Seville a l’Aube — had the sample vial with me to take to a friend to try — and discovered I don’t dislike it as much as I thought I did…
