Knowing is all

Paulina Porizkova for Estee Lauder Knowing, late 1980s. For an interesting analysis of Lauder's efforts to stay young and relevant as a beauty brand in that era, see A New Model: Rethinking Estee Lauder at the New York Times.

Oh my god. So gorgeous! I remember when Paulina Porizkova ruled the world in the 80s. So elegant, so beautiful! She did it all – sports illustrated, elegant EL ads, remember this?

I saw her recently being interviewed about aging – she spent her 20’s obsessing over tiny flaws and now she wonders what she was worried about…

Many thanks for posting the link the 1988 NYT article. It’s fascinating that Lauder was worried even then about attracting young customers. I suppose in 1988 the first generation of women who had loved Lauder since the 1950s were a diminishing customer base.

They recently hired Kendall Jenner, partly, I thought I read, because she has eleventy-million Twitter followers.

Pauline is one of the most classically beautiful women I have ever seen. I’ve never forgotten her stunning ads for Lauder. Interesting that they hired her apparently because their image with Willow Bay was too ‘demure’.

Yes—Kendall Jenner was the 1st thing I thought of, and shows how the industry’s idea of “youth” has changed, to go from Paulina Porizkova to Kendall Jenner!
