Thursday scent of the day 6/4

Posted by Robin on 4 June 2015 122 Comments

penhal-gift

Hope everyone is having a wonderful Thursday. What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm in Penhaligon's Artemisia, from a very old, less than perfect sample.

Reminder: this Friday, 5 June, we're doing British niche....wear something from Ormonde Jayne, Penhaligon's, Miller Harris, Floris, or any other British niche brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I Profumi di Firenze Sandalo Misore concentrate. It’s not beautiful, but it is amazing: a dense cloud of wood smoke and real wood, not Iso E Super or some other radiant synthetic but WOOD, freshly sawn and sawdusty. It’s intoxicating.

I need to try that! My husband builds furniture in his spare time, and I love the smell of sawdust in the garage. It’s hard to find a good sawdust scent.

Smell Bent’s Ice Station Pineapple has a note that smells like a freshly sawn piece of lumber.

I’m in Santal Massoia, one of my favorites from the Hermessence line. It’s usually a fall fragrance for me, but the weather’s been unseasonably cool and cloudy, so I felt like wearing it today. Not that I’m complaining; the suffocating summer heat is right around the corner, no doubt.

I enjoy almost all of the Hermessences (save Ambre Narguile) but santal Massoia didn’t impress me much. It is very pleasant though and I use my sample often, usually right before bed.

I’m wearing Paprika Brasil, the unloved stepchild of the Hermessences. It blooms so beautifully if the heat, like a flash of gleaming copper. I found a tester online for a steal last year and am horrified at how quickly I’m using it up! Execs take note: the lower the cost, the more I spray. :p

Someone probably broke company policy. It was maybe 85% full for less than $100. Got really lucky. The sprayer catches on the way down every so often. Maybe that’s why.

In honor of the impending blooming of the Japanese irises I planted this spring, I am in No. 19 EDT. If I had to choose only one scent for the rest of eternity (heaven forfend!), it would probably be this one.

I do love the EDP – funny how it’s simultaneously so similar and so different. I haven’t explored the extrait yet – it’s on the list! How does it differ – is it more similar to the EDP or the EDT?

Parfum is more vetivery and irisy, dryer and woodier. I really like the edp, which seems much more rose-focused than the other formulations – but my favorite is vintage edt.

Farouche and Mals, thank you both for the input – the parfum sounds lovely, and I think I’ll be exploring it sooner rather than later! I also have some version or other of the vintage EDT (it’s the one that’s kind of an ambery-green, in the Exclusifs-style bottle) that I keep in our wine refrigerator for safekeeping (and consequently forget to wear), and it’s yet different from all the others. My reaction to vintage formulations in general has been changing over time, and I think it’s time to try the vintage 19 EDT again. Yippee, something fun to do over the weekend (while I admire my iris blossoms). 🙂

Jumping on the sandalwood bandwagon this morning with Etro Sandalo. Initially it smelled very synthetic to me, but over the past hour it has improved to a soft floral/patch/wood blend. I think the sandalwood (what there is of it) is Australian.

I’m sure I’m being very lowbrow about it, but I like Australian sandalwood. It’s brighter than Mysore, not as plush, but I can’t say that it’s *bad* at all, just different. I’m not a diehard about my sandalwood, though – if I loved the note more I’d probably be very frustrated by its being different.

I like Australian too (better some real sandalwood of any kind than none) but I must admit I really do like the “plush” (good adjective for it) of the Mysore. Vintage Samsara is kind of my benchmark for sandalwood and not much measures up.

Before I was able to tolerate perfume again (25 yr hiatus), I relied heavily on essential oils. When Australian first came on the market it was very nice, richer than what’s available now. (EO, but I’m assuming that’s what’s used in fragrance products). A recent sandalwood sampler from Eden Botanicals includes several from New Caledonia. It’s greener – like green wood – and even further from Mysore. I miss the earlier Australian.

Everyone in the county is burning brush this week so my throat feels like it’s filled with sand and I’m using my sexy voice, ugh. The ranch next door has three huge fires going right now and ash is raining down on everything so I’m staying inside and tackling the job I’ve been putting off – cleaning and re-sealing the limestone shower and tub surround.
I thought Guerlain Vetiver would be safe but I’m not diggin’ it at all right now. Think I will put on some Chypre Mousse instead. It should at least drown out the chemical odors since the exhaust fan isn’t working and I can’t open the window for fresh air.

SOTD for Throwback Thursday is vintage Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass. This is one of those ‘a little dab’ll do ya’ scents, anything more is suffocating. Despite its melange of aldehydes, spices, and floral notes too numerous to list, Blue Grass to me remains a green, grassy and vegetal fragrance, perfect for June. The spring shrubs have finished blossoming and are glossy green, the trees have all leafed out, and the grass looks healthy and strong – all before the summer heat arrives and everything begins to wilt and turn brown. The powdery soft but spicy drydown of Blue Grass is exquisite and lasts a long time. I like to wear this to an outdoor event, as I am today, to celebrate the birthday of a special lady who turns 92!

Wow, Happy Birthday to your friend!

Being sensitive and/or hyperreactive to many smells, I found the vintage perfume mist and eau de perfume (70s?) rather synthetic smelling. But the Flower Mist (50s? 60s?) seems more true to the original spirit of Blue Grass (as I imagine it) – sheer, outdoorsy. Spritz-able. These come in larger, splash type frosted glass bottles. At first I was alarmed as mine arrived with little brown globules floating in the bottom. Apparently the essential oils had separated, remedied by a good shake. Love this.

Yes, sadly, the newer stuff is not near what the vintage is and, yes, sheer, outdoorsy, and a bit rustic. Glad you could find some to love. The drydown goes on forever . . .

I just read (in a 1980s NYTimes article, long story) that this was initially an homage to the state of Kentucky, where Elizabeth Arden evidently held a successful stable of racehorses. Do you think it fits? Anything horsey about it?

      • Laila says:
        4 June 2015 at 5:09 pm

Yes, I’m aware of its backstory. Does it fit? Well, I’ve traveled a bit through the beautiful rolling green hills of Kentucky horse country with white picket fences delineating the different horse farms. Does it smell ‘horsey?’. No. Does it smell rich and classy? Yes, and green, like those gorgeous green hills with the scent of muted spices and florals in the air. But nothing animalic or stabley – no hay, no leather, etc. Kentucky has wonderful state parks/state resort parks; we’ve camped in many of them in different areas of the state, so I do associate Blue Grass with my memories of Kentucky, too.

Happy Friday Eve everyone! I wanted to thank all the NST readers who had all the kind words and well wishes to me yesterday on my upcoming surgery. I can honestly say that this community of people here is absolutely fantastic. Whenever I am feeling down, I go out and buy myself something nice. So, yesterday, I went to the Estee Lauder counter and saw the Bronze Goddess whipped body cream. So my favorite SA told me that she was wondering when I was going to try this one (she said they cant keep it on the shelf). I put some on and fell in LOVE with it. So, of course I had to try the perfume as well. I bought Bronze Goddess long ago when it first came out. I remembered it was okay but nothing special. Obviously, it has been reformulated and I absolutely adore it. Needless to say, I purchased both.
So, my SOTD is Bronze Goddess by E.L. I have layered the body cream with the perfume and it is divine. I don’t know what took me so long! 🙂

You smell wonderful. I love Bronze Goddess and it’s one of those scents that just makes you feel sunny and fabulous, without much intellectualizing. I don’t want to be without it, ever. (Hope you’re OK.)

The body cream is beyond wonderful- so moisturizing and powerfully scented. When I wear it I don’t even need to layer with the perfume. You smell fab! 🙂

I don’t wear it out, but around the house I sometimes wear the Bronze Goddess Shimmer Oil on my collarbones. Somehow it makes me feel like Carole Lombard in a clingy dress. Try it next time you’re in the store!

I have the day off today, so wearing Incense Rose. Can’t wear Andy’s scents in my work environment, so have to enjoy them when I can.

I’m wearing Prada Infusion d’Iris today. I needed a calming scent for my dentist appointment. It did the trick!

I’m sure your dentist enjoyed it as well, even if s/he didn’t say anything!

SOTD is Alien Aqua Chic. On my skin it just smells like Alien Lite, so it’s easier to wear than the original.

Nice! I get a ton of grape from the original. Which isn’t terrible, just quote high on the grape-to-other-stuff ratio.
Alien Eau Extraordinaire is my favorite of the Alien clan.

I tried Eau Extraordinaire for the first time yesterday and thought it was terrific, clearly related to the original but, I think, much more wearable. (The original Alien has a way of taking over.)

I bought VB in April, but I haven’t worn it much so far. It really makes a statement, and most days I just don’t want to be noticed.

Sotd = Carthusia Fiori de Capri EDT splash with a little dab of DSH Oeilets Rouges to give it more oomph! Very nice. Fading away to spicy skinscent at the end of the day. I see that Lucky Scent had the parfum concentration of this – I might have to get some of it!

Helena Rubinstein Heaven Scent. Very clove-y, but still interesting and not overwhelming. I’ve been reading up on her, quite a fascinating individual.

Mmmmm . . .vintage Heaven Sent, one of my long-time favorites. Just like the Blue Grass above, the new is nothing like the old.

Well, if I said that Heaven Sent smells just like my best friend’s white sweater did in bookkeeping class in high school, that wouldn’t tell you very much, would it? But as Blue Grass reminds me of a place, Heaven Sent is evocative of a time. Marketed to young women as a fresh and innocent scent – ‘an imp wearing angel’s wings’ – it had that same soft, powdery drydown – ‘the heavenly fragrance that clings’ – as Blue Grass with a hint of spice (I believe both shared lavender, carnation, benzoin, and sandalwood notes). But its base notes were deeper, richer, more woody, with patchouli, vetiver and oakmoss – ‘a little bit naughty but heavenly’. (I think there was a whole lot more naughty going on than the fragrance was given credit for!) A cool, rainy day in April is my favorite kind of Heaven Sent day, I find it very soothing and comforting.

I’ve decided to try using all my FB more often, and today I dug out my bottle of Idylle EDP from the very back of my closet. I bought it years ago just at the start of my perfumista career and was a bit suprised today when I noticed that I managed to use up more than half the bottle before I forgot about it!
It really is very pretty and should work well in the summertime.

SOTD was hard to decide this AM so I wore FM Dans Tes Bras with a dab of Caron Aimez Moi on the back of my hand. I really love that one!

Decided to wrestle with Serge Noire today and was able to tame my sample by adding one drop of Virginia Cedar essential oil. It made the opening much tamer and I actually enjoyed wearing it! I know, heresy…….

Burberry Brit Sheer today and yesterday. Was ata client both days, and riding in car with coworkers so went with the reliably easy spritzer.
Didn’t last long, but was pleasant when it hung around.
