Tuesday scent of the day 6/2

Posted by Robin on 2 June 2015 145 Comments

Chanel fashion image, 2015

Happy Tuesday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Box of Eels (that's Chanel Bois des Iles for any of you who have missed the joke).

Reminder: this Friday, 5 June, we're doing British niche....wear something from Ormonde Jayne, Penhaligon's, Miller Harris, Floris, or any other British niche brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It was Eau de Celeri in the morning, now I’ve put on some Olfactive Studio Panorama, also green, but far more exciting, at least the first 30 minutes.
As much as I want to love Eau de Celeri, I have to admit to myself that I don’t. I enjoy wearing it, but I deeply appreciate that it’s not very long lasting, so I can put something else on.

I woudn’t know it’s wasabi, but there is definitely a hotness, to me it’s more like a mediterranean garden in the hot summer sun. Lots of herbs and bushes heated up.

I could NOT wake up this morning, so I’m wearing TDC Sel de Vetiver. It’s crisp, cool, and bracing, and a good wake up and get stuff done scent. One of my faves.

Wearing a single spray of original Eau Premiere for this slightly hot morning. I’m taking a summer class at 8am Monday-Thursday and boy am I sleepy. Ready to be done with school though, so I’m glad to take this on.

That’s the theory. I smelled a new bottle tester in Ulta in Feb. and didn’t notice a difference, personally. I hope not, though it probably is almost 10 years old.

There’s a recent _New York Magazine_ article that says Eau Premiere is new, so evidently they didn’t do a fact-check on that one. (Commenters pointed out the release date.) Also, the title makes it sounds like Chanel changed the formulation of No. 5 (“The World’s Most Classic Scent Gets an Update”), which made me gasp in horror.

          • AnnS says:
            2 June 2015 at 12:33 pm

I think they are pretty much always changing the different iterations of no 5. I get used to picking my “soapy”, “jasminey”, “aldehydie”, “rosie” or OLD one…. They even changed the awesome bath soap which is now just kind of not all together there. Bah. I am very disappointed that they tinkered with the Eau Premiere though b/c I would have bought a back up bottle if I’d known… Thank god for ebay….

I didn’t order their latest. Mainly because I think the name is silly 🙂

When I received the set yesterday I instantly took a sniff of Un Cœur en Mai; you are right it is incredibly pretty. And these days the MDCI’s don’t seem to be as outrageously priced as a few years back. The others seemed to have caught on.

Oh gosh so envious! I hadn’t know about their discovery set ’til right now. You have this version with the 12ml bottles, I assume? That’s such a great size, especially when you can select which you want! 12ml each even of five fragrances would hold me for quite some time!

It really is! Especially with the Euro being so weak right now, especially five 12ml bottles of your choice for under 100 bucks is hard to beat! Or really I should just spring for eight for $150 or so, so I don’t sweat it too hard over which I have to forgo–they are so tradeable if any don’t quite work!

Are you wearing the extrait or the edp? I’ve only tried the edp.

Also, I like the name, which always makes me think of Kiki’s Delivery Service–which is a total non sequitur (the perfume was named after Kiki de Montparnasse!)

Cuir d’Ange. I am trying to figure out which of my perfumes are “office friendly” after accidentally offending a few people (including my boss! :() with my perfume choices.

If people have any recommendations for pleasant but not boring office scents, I would love to hear them! Right now the whole process kind of makes me sad, because I feel like I am having to suppress some important part of myself.

What perfumes did people find offensive? I’m always curious. Have you tried Lalique Encre Noire? I think it would be office friendly, but it’s still really interesting. Also, my perfume hating Mom and sister didn’t have a problem with Eau de Marveilles or Ambre de Marveilles.

To add to the Hermes kelly caleche could be good.

I found at work a small dab instead of spraying is often less offensive to people.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I think the Hermes suggestions are all good, and I don’t own Encre Noire but it has been on my list of things I liked for a while 🙂

The scents I have offended people with previously include:
SSS Jour Ensoleille (admittedly this is strong stuff!!)
          Byredo 1996
          Tom Ford Tuscan Leather

I don’t see how Cuir d’Ange could offend anyone: it’s so low-key and close to the vest. I love it and wouldn’t think twice about wearing it to work.

Doesn’t it feel like perfume is the last/only personal preference that people feel they have a right to not only judge, but to let the wearer know their feelings?

How many times have you gotten a whiff of too strong body odor or really bad breath from your boss or colleagues and saying anything would be the height of rudeness? Or that colleague who wears the worst wrinkle free/polyester combo pleated chinos that pill? It may totally offend you, but it would be very rude to say anything. An what about that super healthy colleague who brings in stinky raw lunches that smell like mud and raw garlic ?

Really, this holier-than-thou business about perfume starts to drive me nuts–especially when judiciously applied.

Ooh, Annikky may be on to something! Try wearing Poison or Secretions Magnifiques, and then you can go back to your usual rotation. More practically, perhaps you could mix your favorites with unscented lotion, and then they’ll only be detectable by you.

I’m so sorry that your office mates don’t like your perfume, but it is so kind of you to try to make them more comfortable. I hope that they were polite and discreet when they brought it up. I am trapped in the office all day, and I hate being unable to escape from odors that are very strong or unpleasant (at least to me). Our receptionist’s perfume is strong, gives me a headache, and can be smelled from cubicles away.

Tell her you are interested in perfumes, ask her what she is wearing, and then give her something in the same vein that you find more tolerable. “You know, what you are wearing reminds me so much of this Jo Malone fragrance, X and X, I”d bet you would just love it. I”ll bring you a little bit…” Give her a big decant of something innocuous and a little sample of something interesting – who knows you could gain a convert!

OK, after my little rant, trying to be helpful now. I think most of Hermes colognes and Hermessence scents and several Chanels (Cristalle, Rue Cambon, Bel Respiro, Beige, to name a few) are great for the office. The added advantage is that these are both well-known and respected brands. So if someone is still bringing it up, you can respond with a casual “oh, that? that’s actually a Chanel exclusive I’m wearing today”.

I am lucky that as long as I don’t overdo it, I can pretty much wear whatever I want to work. That being said, there are times when I have a meeting or lunch meeting especially, that I try and be a bit tame. Of course, wearing just a tiny dab of any frag at the throat or in the cleavage is pretty safe. My fav “tame” office and meeting friendly frags are: Chanel No 5 and/or Eau Premiere, Chanel No 19, Chanel Cristalle, Bottega Veneta, Bottega Veneta Eau Legere, Guerlain Bois d’Armenie, Pacifica Spanish Amber, AG Mandragore edt, Ferre, Stella edt.

I wanted peach but got waffle. I meant to spray my sample of Tresor but instead grabbed Tresor Eau de Parfum Lumineuse (where did I even get this?). No peach, just syrup (or “praline” as Fragrantica terms it). I just hope the whole thing’s over soon.

Can y’all recommend fragrance with a good peach note? Low-end or high, I’m not picky. I’ve been craving peach lately. Mitsouko is already on my radar, as is Mona di Orio Rose Etoile de Hollande (which I adore, but has no sillage on me).

Pêche Cardinal by Parfum a MDCI is extremely peachy and wonderful: it eventually turns into tuberose, but there’s so much peach in the first half (and other supporting fruit — it’s basically wearable compote).

I instantly thought of CD Dolce Vita, though I have the vintage parfum (rather in the playing field as Mitsouko) so I don’t know what’s with the new version and how it smells.

Also you might want to try Gucci Rush, though I haven’t smelled that in years.

Another one I have is NR For Her edp (in the pink bottle), though this is not a fruity perfume and I wouldn’t think of it as a peach frag, the peach gives it a nice roundness, sweetening the whole thing.

      I love peach!

My new favorite note topic! I’m wearing Femme Rochas, mmmmmmm, peach chypre, mm mm mmmmmmm. Also in this category the delightful Shangri La by Hiram Green. Gis (sp?) can tell us more, having worn it a lot lately!

Category-adjacent and, to me, peachily peachy, vintage Le Galion Sortilege. I don’t know the new release of this one. Anyone?

In its own category, Keiko Mecheri Peau de Peche delivers on the promise of its name.

I think there’s a peachy Olympic Orchids scent. Anyone know about that?

I didn’t know that MdO’s rose was peachy. Now must try!

I think Red Cattleya has peach notes but, although I’m a big Olympic Orchids fan, it’s not a favorite. Too fruit punch for me.
Sonnet XVII has an osmanthus note and it IS one I love and wear a lot but I wouldn’t consider it a peach perfume. Apparently it is terribly indolic and smells like death and manure to lots of people (I get a tiny whiff of manure but apparently have an incredible tolerance for stink).

I just got samples from Olympic Orchids yesterday and, yes, Red Cattleya has a strong initial sweet peach and honeydew note. Smells pretty synthetic to me and comes across as “fruit punch” as MikasMinion said. But it was actually my favorite of the batch so far!

Vintage Creed Tabarome. Some years ago a friend bought the EIGHT-OUNCE BOTTLE and gave me a quarter-ounce decant. It’s spectacular, like being in a really ritzy men’s club. You can see why it was Winston Churchill’s favourite. The remake is nothing compared to this.

It is cold and unpleasant here today, more autumn than summer which it is supposed to be. A pleasant comfort is provided by Annick Goutal’s Ambre Fetiche from a sample. I wish it was available in a smaller bottle.

Too cold for a June day in the North of England, so I opted for Marni to cheer me up this morning. It is all but gone now, just traces of muskiness.

Might top up with a spritz or two of NR For Her edp from a travalo I keep in my bag for emergencies like these. Ah…life!

I’m wearing Annick Goutal Passion today (just a small amount because I am at work).

By the way, in case anyone is interested, fragrancenet is currently selling a number of AG EDPs (kind of hard to find), including some of my favorites: Passion, Songes and Grand Amour.

I’ve bought several of the little 7 ml bottles of Dame Perfumery scents. I was going to put on Dark Horse, but the one I grabbed turned out to be Desert Rose. It went on with a blast of hairspray scent. It has developed a little, but to my nose it still smells like hairspray.

Desert Rose was very appealing to me the first time I wore it, but since then, it seems to be giving me more and more of that hairspray effect. 🙁
BFMV I still like a lot – I wear it to bed most nights…vanilla is comfort to me…
      I haven’t smelled Dark Horse yet…

Yeah, I hate to say it because I’m a fan of Dame Perfumery, their customer service is aces, and the prices are reasonable, but I just wasn’t at all a fan of Desert Rose. It smells really ordinary to me.

Want a FB of BFMV, though. Also haven’t smelled Dark Horse.

I found several of his scents a bit gift shoppe candle-y and Desert Rose was one of them. Still, I love the small sizes and reasonable prices and Dark Horse and BFMV are nice.

I decided to go completely stinky today and layer Musc Tonkin with Sonnet XVII. To everyone else I probably smell like the backside of a huge sweaty beast with hygiene issues. To me I smell of cuddly warm fur and peachy bandaids. My nose is obviously super weird, but even I wouldn’t wear this combo in public.
Ellebelle, I’m sorry you don’t love my precious MT but I can see not wearing it for work without at least layering with something super floral and clean. It is probably a better outdoors scent and, of course, it’s not everyone’s thing.

Now that it’s had a few hours to calm down, MT is more manageable to my nose than it was at first, but a sweet or floral layer was exactly what I was thinking I needed over the musk to make it a little friendlier. I haven’t given up on MT yet! (But I don’t think it will be accompanying me to work again.) Glad you’re enjoying it!

I missed the extrait. Would have blind bought a bottle if I could have but was too slow. I do love the EDP and now that I have a full bottle I can play with layering it.
Yeah, I stunk a bit today but enjoyed it enormously. Oddly enough, the combo brought out the sweet of the osmanthus and the floral notes of the musk…and perhaps the manure 😉 I have no idea why both Sonnet XVII and its close relative Tropic of Capricorn make me think of band-aids but I think it’s her osmanthus.

I’m trying out Rose Privee, from a generous sample I just got in the mail. It is a very nice rose, and I like it better the longer I wear it today, but rose is just not my thing, I guess. The first couple hours seemed very masculine to me, sort of sharp somehow. Guess I will be passing this sample along to let someone else give it a try….My favorite rose remains Paris, and I have a sample of Rose Musc, that I have been enjoying. This Rose Privee, ok but a little meh.

Working from home today, so it’s testing time. Going thru my Fragrance Republic samples… got ’01/09′ on my right hand (mango, rose, not sweet, but heading towards soapy) and ’01/06′ on my left hand (fig, vetiver, lime, sandalwood). Quite liking ’06’, which is not exactly shocking considering that all 4 of the main notes are among my favorites 🙂

I decided to revisit PG Cuir Venenum today. I’ve been kind of up and down with this one. When I first tried it, I was totally into it and but it on my buy list (still haven’t bought it). Then more recently I got a decant to make sure I still liked it as much, and I don’t know if it just wasn’t sitting right that day, but it wasn’t working. Now today I decided to try that decant again (after kind of forgetting I had it and coming across it by chance), and I like it again.
