Friday scent of the day 5/29

Posted by Robin on 29 May 2015 183 Comments

roseate spoonbill courtship dance

Welcome to Flirty Friday! Our community project for today: wear a flirty fragrance (whatever that means to you).

As always, do tell us your fragrance of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

My pick: Christian Dior Eau Sauvage, the smell of crisp sheets and money.

Reminder: on Friday 5 June we're doing British niche....wear something from Ormonde Jayne, Penhaligon's, Miller Harris, Floris, or any other British niche brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I forgot to flirt. I’m wearing Narciso, though, in the frosted white bottle and it’s sort of flirty, or sensual, anyway, I guess. Enjoy your Eau Sauvage!

This has been the most difficult theme for me so far – I just couldn’t think of anything among my scents that would say ‘flirty’ to me. In the end, I’m in Apres l’Ondee, because:
    1) I just felt like wearing it
    2) I’m sure it was considered the hight of flirtiness a century ago.

I’m curious to see what others have picked.

Maybe we should have just done “sexy” — that seems clearer for many people!

I see flirty and sexy is very distinct categories. Would have gone for a totally different perfume for “sexy”!

I agree. And I wasn’t complaining – I very much enjoy the themes that motivate me to wear things I otherwise wouldn’t. It was simply a failure of imagination on my part.

I think I agree… “flirty” has to do with appreciating someone else’s attractiveness, with a sense of fun, in my book.

Oh, for sexy I’d have dug out something with civet. “Flirty” is lighter, less of a commitment. It’s the sidelong glance rather than the “come-hither” look.

Yes, agree with both you and Mals. I see flirty as girly (or boyish), superficial, harmless.

Crisp sheets and money – LOL!
I planned to wear Aimez-Moi because it smells very girly and flirty and because of the name. But today I just did not feel like using it. I sprayed Narciso Rodfriguez For Her EDP instead. For me, it is a sensual, intimate fragrance. Besides it has rose, musk, peach and a pink bottle.:)

I’m flirting with disaster…? Not really, I’m just spritzing on some vintage No. 22, not knowing if it’s parfum or what, when it might get a bit warm out today. Very exciting!

      Flirting with fame?
      Flirting with fire?
      Flirting with plan B?

Carnal Flower for me. I wanted to see which one I like better, PG Tub.Couture or CF and I can’t really decide.
I’d wear Prada Candy if it was colder, because that’s what I was wearing the last time I felt flirty.

I’m still debating between Worth’s Courtesan, which is pretty flirty to the outright skank of Bal a Versailles. Maybe Shalimar would be a good comprimise.

I once wore (discreetly) a scent at work that a fragrance-hating co-worker couldn’t get enough of. She declared it “flirty”, although I think a better descriptor is “suave, but not in a cheesy way”. But flirty it is, to at least one person: today I’m wearing L’Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme. It’s so incredibly good.

I had not even checked what the category was today, but I am wearing an Armani Prive Suzhou mini which was a gift from Sniffapoolaza.
It is more sugary than flirty, and in fact much sweeter than I would usually chose. But then again, I generally do not like sweet scents.
The perfume is supposed to be inspired by Chinese Gardens. I don’t know why Hermes and Armani have both chosen this year to represent Chinese Gardens with very sweet scents. I associate Chinese Art as sometimes delicate but not particularly sweet, (even the flower paintings). I know that some Chinese restaurants in the US serve rather sweet dishes but I think that tends to be an adjustment to American tastes. If anyone has any insight I’d like to know.
Anyway back to the fragrance, beneath the sweetness lies a peach scent and a bit of peony. I would recommend this as a sophisticated sweet tooth perfume, particularly to that mythical young girl who is still in the phase of life where all things should be sweet and girlie, but somehow has acquired a luxury department store charge card and a budget for Prive scents.

Too hot here to be flirty today.

So I went all kinds of tropical drink/dessert with CSP Coco Figue.

It’s a totally non-serious, feel good scent that gets a lot of use in heat and humidity. It’s an edt but one spritz lasts all day on me. Totally great bang for my buck.

    Happy Friday!

Flirty made me think fruity floral so I’m wearing Scarlet Larkspur from Ineke’s Floral Curiosities collection. I smell of cheerful floral cherry shampoo but it is a pleasant scent.
Actually, we were without power for about ten hours after the latest storm blew through and it wasn’t quite cool enough in the house to be comfortable so a fruity fresh scent is probably the best idea for me today anyway.

Hi Kris: LFdB is different than Stella, but kind of in the same category, generally as a spicy oriental rose. There is no significant amber or patchouli in LFdB – it is a very rich, liquor-y, but sweet rose, with a nice lightly spicy musky drydown. The musk is very light (I don’t like a lot of musk), but it gives it a cashmere quality – very tactile. I like and own Stella, but it’s more linear. LFdB has more dimension. They aren’t really the same b/c LFdB is more complex. I can see Stella being a kind of stepping stone to LFdB. On the other hand, JM Red Roses is definitely more of a soliflore “green” fresh florist rose. Not even close, nothing else going on. I think Red Roses is fine (esp. for layering), but LFdB is an oriental with a much richer and more interesting accords and development.

SOTD is Eau de Merveilles, because my fiancé loves it, and it smells sexy (almost literally!), so that’s as flirty as I could think of on my very early morning.

Funny story, yesterday I was wearing Bronze Goddess and I received a compliment from a sales man in an sportswear store who said I smelled nice, like fig! I guess if the milkyness of the fig can be perceived as coconut, the opposite can happen as well. Ha! I also thought it was quite unusual for someone who’s not necessarily into perfume to recognize a fig scent.

My choice for Flirty Friday is Rochas Tocade (pre-2013 reformulation). Prelude to the scent itself is its very name – whim, fancy, infatuation – and its bottle (that perfumistas love to hate but I unapologetically enjoy). It’s a bit silly and over-the-top but has the whimsy I love. Tocade is cheerful, optimistic, playful -and, yes, a bit loud – but she’s well-intentioned and having a good time for the day. Friday is always Fun Day, and her serious side remains at home.

It is cold out, and I feel fat. Trying to work up to flirty…flirting with anything seems quite beyond me right now. The curmudgeon in me wants to wear Tea for Two, but I am going to stick to my plan of Good Girl Gone Bad (as if!). 👿

I’m in Good Girl Gone Bad, too, which I do believe is the flirtiest thing I have. Flirty name, flirty bottle, flirty fruity/floral.

I’m liking it and my husband’s eyebrow went up. Still much prefer Imperial Tea or Love and Tears if I’m going to choose among his fragrances, but this is nice.

Your husband’s eyes went up? Oh that makes me feel better. Nothing worse than being a grouch while smelling like a peach… I’m working up to “reserved” which is not exactly flirty, but it is the right direction.

I haven’t sniffed the two other Killian you mentioned. Will do so next opportunity!

Yeah, he did that “I’m intrigued” eyebrow lift thing. I make him sniff absolutely everything I put on and this is about as close to “I like it” as I’ve seen. I basically wear whatever I want regardless, but it’s nice to have someone’s opinion (even if I toss it aside promptly).

Imperial Tea is fantastic if you like the smell of jasmine tea. I happen to think jasmine tea is the greatest smell on earth, so I was sold. Problem, of course, is that the fragrance is fleeting and the bottles are expensive. Someday I’ll own it and spray with wild abandon, but that day ain’t today.

Love and Tears is a very pretty jasmine. Not quite as smashing as Imperial Tea to me, but pretty all the same.

Thanks for all the words of support yesterday! The news turned out to not be so good (I got laid off) but my situation is ok an I feel lucky and thankful for that. So, I’ll go all out for flirty Friday with a generous application of lipstick rose and bright lips 😉

Trying vintage Coty Chypre for the first time today, which was lent to me by a friend. I’m not sure I’d call it “flirty.” But the notes in it tease me, appearing and disappearing. Something very animalic. Something oddly peppery, reminiscent of the smell that wafts up when I open the spice drawer. Something assertive that feels very old-fashioned, liked I’d smelled it on the fur collar of my great aunt. (When I understand more about fragrance notes, maybe I’ll be able to specify that note.)

I’m in Scent by Costume National – it always makes me feel quite flirty and a bit… frivolous somehow. It’s easy to spray and easily approachable. Which is a good thing as it shakes me out of my old belief that fragrance should be always “intellectual”!

Flirty is tough…to me it isn’t sexy exactly or seductive. I think of it as being more girly/playful like a flowery summer sundress. With that in mind, I’ve gone with Flora Nymphea. All tanned limbs and wild flower sweetness.

Attended 8th grade graduation for my youngest this morning, so didn’t feel particularly flirty. (ARGH THE PASSAGE OF TIIIIIME) But what I picked wound up being both appropriate and flirty in a mild sort of way, so it’s all good.

I’m wearing the first Ines de la Fressange (Calice Becker, 1999), which has a color in my mind – a beautiful pinky-coral. It smells primarily of fresh (not candied) peach, rose, ylang, carnation, and sandalwood to me, and it is a terrible shame that it’s been discontinued so long that bottles are not to be found now.

I chose my fragrance before noting today’s theme, so am wearing BV Knot – again! – I’m still in the early stages of infatuation with that one.

Now I’m wondering which of the scents in my cupboard could be considered “flirty”. Austenfan’s suggestion of Vamp à New York is a good one; maybe also the original (Lagerfeld) Chloe? Beachy scents are flirty, too, to my nose, so Écume de Rose would do nicely. But my cupboard is pretty well stocked with Chanels and chypres: poised or mysterious, but not flirty!

On the one hand, Jasmine de Provence is flirty in a “seal the deal” sense that the Bal a Versailles contingent mentioned above. On the other hand, I was recently at a very flirty party, wore Jardin sur le Toit, and was complimented on it by a flirty person. What to do?

In the end, I wore the jasmine, as I’d worn the other more recently. However, now the day is nearly over and the jasmine is wearing down, I think I’ll refresh with sur le Toit. 😉

SNM Melograno. It smells so good in a freshly scrubbed with Ivory soap and sandalwood cologne kind of way. Sexy without skank, not obviously on the make, but rather disarmingly natural and unpretentious. Certainly not fruity, hence not a girly kind of flirt but rather an Amal Alamuddin arch of the eyebrow flirt. Also, as the fictional Vesper Lynd’s cologne, so it enhances romantic self-confidence, the great aphrodisiac. I wonder which was the more difficult heart to capture – George Clooney or James Bond? 😉

I suspect George’s heart has been captured and uncaptured many times over his lifetime … and I’m not sure James Bond HAS a heart. Well, at least not since he was unmemorably portrayed by George Lazenby in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and married Diana Rigg, who was killed off in an early scene.

Hmmm, I started the day with Séville à L’Aube, but my husband said “What’s THAT?” in a less than flirty tone! So, then I played hooky from work and went to the mall, and sought the Breath of God, but all I got was pencil shaving breath, so I moved on to a “back of the hand show-down between No 5 and Eau Premiere”, and No 5 won that going away…but they (this is Macy’s) only had the refill bottles for my little travel case in the “real perfume strength” as the SA put it, and they wanted $100 for that 10 mls of history, so I skipped it. And by the time I got home and fed the horses and cooked dinner and tucked the barns cats in, and tucked the chickens in, and checked on the horses and closed the gates, the Chanel had been defeated by the reality of my life. So I sprayed myself with Cashmere Mist which is adorable hubbie’s favorite, but he is sound asleep in his recliner and here I am, telling you all my sad failure to be flirty tale! Ah well, tomorrow is another day, as Scarlett would say! There’s a question- what perfume did Scarlett wear?

I hoped people would find it funny, and not just pitiful! LOL…

    Very late to the party!

    SOTD = L’AP Seville a l’Aube

I was in a hurry this morning but wanted to stay on theme. If you’ve read Denyse Beaulieu’s The Perfume Lover, you’ll know it’s Flirt with a capital F 😉

I love this perfume and I know there are quite a few commenter fans!

I went with fruity-floral, too–Histoires de Parfums 1804 (George Sand). Lovely, realistic pineapple that mellows into something more floral. This was a really interesting topic. I think it produced a greater variety of choices than any previous themes.
