Wednesday scent of the day 5/27

Posted by Robin on 27 May 2015 140 Comments

Singapore Bird teacup

If you have a free moment, do share your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing Guerlain Teazzurra.

Reminder: on 29 May we're doing Flirty Friday, and you can interpret that however you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am wearing Maria Candida Gentile Hanbury sprayed over Deep Steep Honeydew – Spearmint (dry oil). It is a good pick-me-up fragrance, very summery.

Ok, I’ve been putting off asking…how do people wear scents they’ve decided they don’t like? That would just ruin my day. I was a picky eater from the day I was born, but is it just a tolerance thing?

Not speaking for everyone but sometimes out of a sense of adventure or just pure stubbornness I will wear something I’ve worn and disliked, just to see if I’ve changed my mind. Sometimes I have! I discovered that La Nuit de Paco Rabanne was genius and not filth, as I had thought for so many years. But I tried L’Artisan Mechant Loup many times and just never liked it, so at least now I know.

I will wear stuff that I don’t “get” right away, but I don’t retest things that make me feel revulsion. If I don’t like something and I keep trying, it is usually because it is a classic that I want to like or is something that has gotten rave reviews from bloggers that I like.

Apply small amount to back of hand, that’s what I do. Easiest place to scrub off later, and doesn’t get on your clothing.

I had no idea it was well-known. I just always loved her dishes, so I got them when she moved into a retirement home. She is no longer with us, but lived to 101 and wore Chantilly for as long as I can remember.

Feeling like I needed some vigor this morning, I’m wearing Arabian Oud Kalemat and am exceptionally fragrant even though I only put on a few tiny drops. It’s definitely livelier than I am right now, but I’ll keep drinking tea until I wake up.

Bas de Soie, first test. Unfortunately, I keep sniffing to find something likeable (hyacinth and iris are among my favorite notes), and then rear back with dismay. At first I though newborn diaper, but now it’s a bit of that plus runny egg yolk.

Surprising – I don’t get any dirty or bizarre notes to BdS, and I’m usually quick to catch those (and ban the offender for ever). BdS is just green and floral, green and floral (repeat until it fades) for me. I suppose it’s also a bit metallic, but so am I ;).

It’s going to be hot and muggy today (yeah! – not snow!), and I was going to wear Mandragore. But on the way over to that lovely maroon bottle, my hand switched directions and reached for Songes edp instead. Songes is turning out to be the perfect sultry compliment to this weather. When it’s right for Songes, it is just so right!

I’ve been experimenting for several years with drying oris root. The scent was just not developing; I was so disappointed. After further research, I realized the oxidation process that develops the scent requires, duh, oxygen. Meaning uncovered containers, rather than bottled. Scent development has resumed nicely (after 2 lost years).

I love the smell of hay. We went through some Amish country during a road trip this past weekend, and they and other farmers were also making hay. A nice change in odors from the other brown stuff that was being spread around. 😉 There’s no farm fields up where I live, but I’m lucky that this particular woodland fern – called hay scented fern – smells like hay. Go figure. I love that sweet green smell.

Sampling Dior Feve Delicieuse, which is a dryish vanilla/tonka. I don’t get much of the listed hay from dabbing from a vial and it dries down to a dryish powdery vanilla musk after about ninety minutes.

I’m trying out Lush Smugglers Soul in the solid format today. I do like it so far. Also, their new copperhead solid shampoo is amazing. I’ve been using it for three weeks now. OJ Ta’if today. I just drained the sample. It’s lovely, but to my nose smells exactly like OJ Woman without the lovely pine-y/hemlock-y note. So it really suffers in comparison to Woman, because I love that note, and that’s what makes the perfume for me. Happy to have tried a sample, but sure don’t need a bottle considering I have a bottle of Woman.

It’s annoying how similar the OJs are. I have Champaca and sometimes wish I had Taif, but they are too similar to have both. Maybe I should have bought Taif, but I’d probably be thinking the reverse if I had.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

Working from home today due to an early morning (phone) meeting. In a confined space, I subscribe to the “one dab will do ‘ya” techinque and since I don’t dab, I did one spray and I know it will last me through the end of the day and if not, I will re-spritz.

You (and others here) make me want to try this in various formulae. I’ve spritzed the current EdT and now have some modern extrait to try. Now I need to seek EdP…then there’s the whole vintage/current debate. I’ve liked them both. The green, crisp citrus part seems to be my favorite. What’s your favorite part? The vetiver? The galbanum? The whole shebang? 😀 You smell mahvelous (and properly girded) for your meeting. Be well!

Love 19 EDP, and it does last a full day and then some, doesn’t it. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! 🙂

Wearing CSP Vanille MOkha from my bottle that just arrived yesterday! I had been thinking about it for awhile, but it is discontinued and supplies on ebay were dwindling, so finally pulled the trigger! I only had a decant before and the bottle is much more coffee-ish. Hope it will keep me awake today!

I’ve been testing samples. The only one that has worked for me so far is Miller Harris Geranium Bourbon. I love what Tom had to say about it on Perfume Smellin’ Things:

“Luckyscent describes it as an English garden after the rain. What they leave out is that there’s a hunky gardener in there who’s had a slug of Jack Daniels or two and a quick Lucky Strike and is interested in some serious Lady Chatterly action.”

I find it mainly rosy with interesting undercurrents.

Oh, that is good copy. Depending on how interesting your undercurrents are, you might even agree with Tom….

Apparently, the name is a type of rose geranium grown on the island of Reunion to produce an essential oil often used in soaps. This creates a sort of shaving soap effect. Definitely a clean-shaven gardener from an era when clean meant honest soap and water rather than laundry musk, dryer sheets or sport colognes.

Sadly, it looks like they don’t make it anymore, but there is some on Amazon and ebay.

I have a bottle which I only sprayed once. I find it has a bitter herbal edge that I just can’t get past. I was looking for something that smelled more like the leaves on my potted geraniums. To be completely honest, I think I was more in love with the bottle than the scent inside. Very silly since I keep my perfumes in their boxes.

Ugh! Another day of thunderstorms, hail, flooding, etc… in the Houston area. The rain has stopped for now, but is predicted to start again later this afternoon. Also, we were told to expect more for the next week! 🙁
My SOTD is Chloe. I get so many compliments on this one when I wear it. This will end up being a staple for me. I will always have a bottle on hand!

I’ve been loving PHI in this humid weather. Profuse sweating sort of diffuses it a bit on me and makes it more of a gentle citrus watercolor rose. It’s there but it’s not there. In Winter, it’s much sharper on me. This one seems to be a temperature and skin chemistry chameleon.

Nope, I think it is unpredictable. Instead of amplifying, it becomes a sort of of sheer scent halo on me, which is lovely in the warm weather. When you try it, let us know if you like what it does in the heat.
