Tuesday scent of the day 5/26

Posted by Robin on 26 May 2015 150 Comments

The long weekend is over, sorry! What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm wearing Neela Vermeire Créations Pichola.

Reminder: on 29 May we're doing Flirty Friday, and you can interpret that however you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Today I am wearing the savory fig Womanity. I love it so much. It just seemed perfect for today’s sunny warm weather. It’s a reminder that vacations are almost arriving to me 🙂

I like Womanity too and always forget how much until someone mentions it. It’s probably one of those things I will someday kick myself for not buying at Marshall’s when I had the chance.

Un Jardin sur le Toit, which is now in its violets, raspberries, and wisp of vetiver stage. I wish this stage lasted for longer, but the whole is very nice

Heure Exquise, both dry oil and EDP. ( One can never have too much of a good thing).

Drinking a Sichuan black tea. Lovely and rather earthy.

How did Eau de Celeri last for you? I have a sample but have only tried it once. I found it a nice interesting green but very quiet and not long lasting when dabbed from my little vial. I obviously need to try it again to see if it was just me.

Sorry, only just seen this. I only used a tiny dab as well and got about 5 hours out of it, it isn’t strong on skin, but has a very nice sillage. I plan on giving it a proper testing with 3 generous smears form the vial tomorrow.
Oh, and I noticed it’s an EDT, not an EDP.

Vintage-ish Cinnabar. It’s a miserable grey day, hammering down rain, so I needed something spicy and warm and comforting. It’ll soon be too hot to wear that kind of thing so I’m enjoying it while I can.

My SOTD is Honeybee Gardens Bay Rum Herbal Aftershave. Can I just say that I do not understand how men can put perfumed alcohol on their faces after shaving. That sounds so painful to me. There are some interesting reviews of aftershaves on-line, and the guys talk about the “burn” as if it’s a good thing.

Anyway, this stuff smells nothing like bay rum, but I like it. It is a bit like Florida Water with some mint and a smidgen of powder, but it lasts much longer than Florida Water. It should be a good cologne to use as the temperatures heat up. It should be in the 90s in a week or so.

Ingredients: SD alcohol 40 (natural source), witch hazel extract, aloe vera, yarrow, calendula, German chamomile, elder flower, bay, rose, peppermint, lavender, lemon, essential oils.

    News flash about Colonial Drug:
My husband and I were walking in Nonantum (Newton) yesterday and we passed by Colonial drug. The owner (woman) was inside, but the shop was closed because of the holiday. She let us inside anyway and was incredibly gracious, engaging and friendly. It looks like they are really spiffing up the shop and have a lot of new inventory. I noticed that they have the full line of Floris, some good ones from Creed, and seem to be getting in a lot of Italian products (Villorisi shaving and bath things, and the full line from Ortegia). Their perfume shelves look much more updated and organized and she mentioned that they will be offering a full on scent bar for women and men’s fragrances in a month or two. Really she was more than kind.
Some of us have had off-putting experiences at Colonial in the past, and maybe as a result of complaints and on-line bad press, it seems that they are really trying to create a customer-friendly atmosphere in their shop now. I’m just really happy that there will be a scent bar in the Boston area, and really would prefer to support a local business rather than on-line retailers.

Yes, do go if you get a chance. There is free parking behind Silver Lake Liquors if you are driving. And just a few doors down is the most wonderful antique shop on the planet with all sorts of African and Asian art and curios as well as an amazing collection of vintage jewelry. The proprietor of that store is a total riot, you will have fun.

I will keep you posted on when the scent bar is available. It would be great to go a bit later in the summer. For me it is a good walking destination, but if you are driving, you can park behind Silver Lake Liquors for free (I’m pretty sure), or take the 71 bus from Hvd square and then it’s about a 20 minute walk up Watertown Street.

Pre-work out, I’ve put on some Atelier Cologne Sud Magnolia for the first time. I found the opening too sharp, but after an hour it has settled down to a citrusy, slightly green, faint flower. I much prefer Malle’s magnolia. I just wish they were the same price per ml! (At least I can get a smaller size of the Malle one).
I’d like to know your thoughts on these.

    Now I’m off to shower!

I tried Malle ‘ s eau de magnolia, and didn’t think much of it. It was a bit wan for me, but i am not that scent ‘ s target audience, as I am not generally into citrus or soft florals. Didn’t like Tauer Zeta, either, somehow these are connected for me.
Haven’t tried the new Atelier, will probably give it a try out of curiosity next time i am in Sephora.

I had never heard of a treadmill desk until now! I should have been using this while sitting at the computer doing my tax return and reading perfume blogs. I’ve been suffering with sciatica for over a month now. If anyone knows how to get over this, let me know.

Yikes, sciatica can be so disabling! There is a learning curve to a treadmill desk, but so far I am really liking it. Much better for you all around as there is more and more evidence that’s sitting more than 4-5 hours a day is disastrous for health and these negative effects are not mitigated by being active other times during the day.

It’s a great alternative to sitting on your keester all day 🙂

I have also noticed the trend towards standing desks. Supposed to be very good for us! Anyone doing standing-and-working here who can tell us how it feels? how long it takes to get used to it?

I stand about half the time — I have a great laptop stand, cheap on amazon, and have divvied up what I do on my laptop and what I do on my desktop so that I am “forced” to alternate standing and sitting. Will note a few things:

            1. For some people, standing all day can be as “harmful” as sitting all day. Worth doing some research on the subject! I tried standing all day at first, but eventually found that alternating works best for me. And in the beginning, yes, your feet will hurt!

            2. If you stand poorly / use poor posture, standing for any length of time is going to be hard — hard in a different way than sitting all day, but still, can be hard on the legs and the back. Some people find their back pain just eventually moves from one part of the back to another.

            3. One of the things I like about standing is that it “reminds” me to move away from my screen every so often.

            4. Standing more really does seem to burn more calories for me! I’m sure Deva is burning way more than me on her treadmill though.

            5. Standing at the laptop stand has also made me think about how much I sit in general. I frequently watch TV standing now, and I often eat lunch standing.

Even short walks every an hour can make a difference:

        http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/05/13/a-2-minute-walk-may-counter-the-harms-of-sitting/

Re sciatica, it would be best to get a medical check-up. Also think about whether anything has changed in terms of your schedule, chair or other ergonomics, weight, exercise, how you are spending your time, and so on. Also, how old is your mattress? Please let us know what eventually works!

Sunny Day, have you tried the tennis ball trick? You position a tennis ball um, how do I put this delicately? Well, you place it on a firm chair or car seat or wherever you find yourself sitting right up under the area that hurts. You’ll know when you’ve got it right. It releases the tensed muscles in the area and provides some relief. (I also do this for driver’s butt, and two tennis balls in a sock works well for a tense neck and back pain.)
Chiropractors are good at dealing with sciatica, and taking your preferred NSAID is helpful for the pain and inflammation. Acupuncture may help.
I had sciatica when I was pregnant and I felt like I just wanted to gnaw my leg off. And half my butt.
        Good luck!

Dabbed on some Amouage Sunshine today (first time testing) and it was great for a few seconds as I was applying. Then it was gone. I see it has almond as a note and I usually have problems getting that to stick around. Everything else in it must have disappeared along with the almond. Oh, well. At least I won’t be tempted to buy that beautiful yellow bottle (yellow being my favorite color).

I thought I’d survived, but I’ve finally been taken down. Whenever the fiance gets a cough or a little cold, I end up decimated and bed-ridden. I’d had a streak of good luck this year (I survived his 102F fever over Christmas unscathed!) but the cold he’s had for the past two weeks is being stubborn. Last night I felt a sore throat coming on after a full weekend of barely sitting down for more than half an hour. This morning I woke up feeling like someone punched me all over and my throat completely swollen. He also relapsed after getting somewhat better so this dang cold has knocked both of us down. Grrrr!!!!

Thank goodness for Eau de Merveilles. The salty notes are really working magic and making the work day tolerable today.

On a good note: got a lot of work done in the new house this weekend. Painted the living room and now it makes me so incredibly happy. Also, I may have changed what my paint color choice is for the bedroom now. I was going to paint it the same color as the study, but after seeing the living room I think I’ll go with that color. The lighting is the same since the bedroom is upstairs from the living. Also, having curtains up and a little bit of furniture is helping to make the house look like we actually live there. Sofa comes next week! 🙂

Happy Tuesday everyone! What a morning. Houston experienced some horrible weather last night. As a result, the city is flooded. My school district is the only one that didn’t cancel for the day. The sun is finally out, but we are expected to get more rain!
My SOTD is Wild Fig & Cassis. Loving this one so much.

Also this nastiness has sprung a leak in the roof above my apartment, apparently. I was watching the news this morning and noticed a water patch on the ceiling above the TV. I don’t remember ever having anything like this in previous rains, so I think it’s a new leak.

Why do your colleagues make negative comments, though? That seems a bit personal! Or are there rules about wearing scent? I’ve always been lucky to work either at home or in fragrance-friendly offices.

I’m wearing Debaser yet again. It appears it will be one of my go-to scents this summer and I may need a bigger decant or FB sometime. I know nobody else in the area wants more rain but I could do with some cool drizzle or at least clouds. This hot, still, muggy stuff is for the birds and the only ones enjoying it are the biting insects. Houston folk, we seem to have your mosquitoes and you can have them back any time 😉
I’m going outside anyway. Just spent three hours trying to convince a state govt. office that a piece of farm property did NOT have an assigned numerical address, so I can’t do better than directions, coordinates, or the tax description. Finally got fed up and went online to enter the info since I assume nobody will ever actually read it.
On the bright side, the river is clear so I’m going swimming later!

Took Bookworm to the eye doctor, getting that appointment in before she heads back to college for the summer session. It was much less stressful for her today than I had worried it would be; they went back to giving her the same eyedrop dose for dilation that they give children, and she didn’t have to suffer through six hours of not being able to see!

    Hi everyone,
My afternoon client canceled, so I’m goint to spray and spray liberally. What, I do not know yet. PHI has been sitting neglected, so I may do that one.

Yesterday, I tried out my macro lens for the first time, and took some pictures of ants on the peony buds. Which got me to thinking about how very sweet those peonies must be to attract so many adorable little ants. I was inspired to wear some sweet, sweet jasmine perfume (Lust from Lush) which was beautiful and lasted all day in the somewhat humid weather.

Hi… I’m new here, and sort of new to fragrances in general. I’m wearing Eau du Bonheur by Fragonard today for the first time. It’s heavenly the moment it’s applied, but slips away to a vague, woody sweetness after just an hour or so.

This is what I was expecting/hoping Mohave Ghost to smell like.
Not sweet , drier with a thin patchouli/oudish thing going on. I like it and the deep toned bottles are a nice touch.
