Friday scent of the day 5/22

Posted by Robin on 22 May 2015 185 Comments

Jo Malone Dark Amber & Ginger Lily

TGIF! Today's community project: wear something from Jo Malone or perfumer Christine Nagel.

I'm wearing Jo Malone Dark Amber & Ginger Lily, originally released as part of the Kohdo wood collection.

As always, do tell us your fragrance of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Reminder: on 29 May we're doing Flirty Friday, and you can interpret that however you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

You can count the Christine Nagel perfumes I own on one finger. So I smell of the shiny, sweetened, golden metallic elastoplast goodness that is Archives 69 by Etat Libre d’Orange.

I’ve discovered that I own 3 Nagels: Eau de Cartier, L’Histoire d’Eau and Teorema, which is what I’m wearing today.

During this week I’ve realised that I’ve still not tried a single Jo Malone. It’s quite a big line so I might like to keep it that way.

Drinking Assam Halmari, which is probably my favourite Assam. It’s quite mellow but strong if you see what I mean.

I just found a sample of Assam that Upton sent me in early 2014 and that got mixed in with papers in my office! So I’ll be drinking that this afternoon.

The LotV & Ivy is really pretty. I think of LotV as my mother’s thing, and I haven’t loved any Jo Malones except for Blackberry & Bay, but that one is tempting.

I’ve applied Theorema sparingly, since I think it made my throat scratchy the last time I wore it. Like austenfan, I’ve never tried any JMs, but I think that will change eventually.

I think we should have some kind of recognition program for people who go through multiple bottles of a fragrance. Not sure *why* it’s such an accomplishment, just feels impressive.

Sadly I only have two Nagel fragrances – Mauboussin and Mille et Une Roses, which is what I’m wearing today. I wish Lancome distributed this in the US! I’m lucky to have three of those little 15 ml bottles. But I don’t wear it as often as I’d like. It really is a pretty little rose fragrance.

Mille et une Rose is very pretty! And something in fragrance terms of what my mother used to call an “all-weather coat,” sort of medium-weight and classic.

Mauboussin was too much for me today since it’s spring, even though it’s chilly. This time of year all I’m waiting for is my peonies and roses to bloom, so MeUR is best!

Maybe I posted this before, and maybe it’s not even true anymore, but just in case it helps…. I think it is sold at Bergdorf Goodman’s Lancome counter in NYC. A year or more ago, another US perfumista was desperate to find it. I mentioned seeing it there, and she ordered it over the phone.

I saw at least one of these at the Chicago Neiman Marcus last fall, the Mille et Une Roses at least. . .and I think it is still on the Lancome website. Something to try. It was fun in Chicago to try Peut Etre (sorry for the missing marks) and the others from that collection in person. Hope that helps.

I was going to wear Si Lolita, but woke up to rain and grey skies, so I went with Amouage Gold and later Rochas Madame to see if it really was similar. And honestly, I probably couldn’t tell which was which if they weren’t side by side.
However, for some mysterious crazy addict reason I now want both bottles. I should say that my decants will probably last me about 5 years or so, but the constant fear of discontinuation and reformulation is driving me mad.

I used to have a bottle of Si Lolita, but it didn’t work out for me, so I thought I didn’t have anything for today’s theme (although apparently Christine Nagel played a role in Narciso Rodriguez for her, so I should have worn that).

Instead I’m wearing OJ Tolu. I can’t believe I hated this the first few times I tried it. My nose must have evolved because I was blown away by it this morning when I was going through my lesser worn samples.

In honor of all the white locust blossoms perfuming the air around here, I’ve got on Nectarine Blossom and Honey, the last of a sample. Nice. I don’t need a bottle.

It’s funny… Dark Amber & Ginger Lily has been the only JM I actively disliked – one of those floral-incense things that smells like acrid wet wood ashes on me. It’s in company with a lot of things that people love, like Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose and Tauer Incense Rose and… oh, what was that thing? Shoot, can’t remember. In other words, it seems to be a skin issue.

Mmmm … I love the smell of white locust blossoms. We call them black locust trees out here, but according to the Interwebs, white locust trees and black locust trees are the same thing. My nose can’t make out any of the listed notes of Nectarine Blossom and Honey. It just smells like generic perfume to me 🙁 If I could smell the nectarine and black locust, I would probably own a FB.

It’s just a hint of locust blossoms in NB&H, but every now and then I get a little whiff.

There’s a huge stand of the trees on either side of the road that leads to the high school… and since I seem to spend a lot of time driving there/waiting in the parking lot for kids to finish track practice/band practice/FFA team meetings/academic challenge team practice, I do enjoy them so much in the spring!

We have honey locust trees here surrounding us, which also have extremely fragrant hanging white blossoms. They usually bloom shortly after my lilacs open, so I’m eagerly awaiting their luscious scent. Unfortunately, this is yet another of my favorite blossom scents I’ve not found in any fragrance.

I love locust blossoms! I think the old MAC Naked Honey fragrance is the closest I’ve ever smelled to a fragrance like it.

I don’t like Dark Amber and Ginger Lily either. Actually, there are only just a few Jo Malone’s that I do like. I don’t own bottles of any JM frags. But to be fair, there are a bunch of the newer ones I’ve never smelled.

I wasn’t familiar with Zara so looked it up … and am going to have to find a good chunk of time to browse around in there. I see already that they have some very cute handbags (one of my weaknesses). The cashmere thing for me isn’t so much the investment, it’s that any kind of wool irritates my skin. Even super-soft cashmere. It’s sad, but at least I still have leather – in handbags AND in perfume!

I’m wearing Red Roses by Jo Malone and True Love perfume oil by Valentina’s Home-Brewed (notes: cardamom, chocolate, and roses). By itself, Red Roses doesn’t hold my interest, but it layers well with the True Love.

Here is a re-hash about what I’ve said in the past about True Love perfume oil: Unfortunately, I do not smell any chocolate, but I do like this perfume. It starts off as a slightly herbal rose, then the spice enters and it’s a spicy rose. The spice comes and goes throughout the day. The rose is never that strong or sweet. It dries down to something warm and slightly dark, and if it is patchouli, then they used a very light touch (I don’t like a lot of patch). I have the body spray and the oil, and there might be a few seconds of weak chocolate in the spray.

You can get Valentina’s Home-Brewed products at health food stores (both brick and mortar and on-line).

In terms of Jo Malone, I own FBs of Blue Agava & Cacao and Red Roses. I want a FB of Vintage Gardenia (one of the few white florals I would wear), but it’s been discontinued 🙁

Its not that I don’t like them – I just find most of them uninspiring. They tend to be light, pretty, and easy to wear which really just isn’t my style. And they are pushed so hard at my local Norstrom’s, with the entire line in front and taking up a lot of room. The only Jo Malone that I really like is Saffron – which is mostly just saffron and vanilla to me and it smells great. I’d take a bottle of that one 😉

Coulda worn Theorema but I went with the only other Nagel I own, the equally discontinued B*Men. Astringent rhubarb plus spicy-smoky wood with a bit of creaminess to round it out. Amazing.

It’s hard to come by, but worth trying if you should find some: the rhubarb is NOT KIDDING — it’s just vicious, in a good way. This doesn’t smell like anything else on the market.

Since I don’t own any Jo Malone or anything by Christine Nagel, I am continuing on with my Nest coffret. The last scent of the coffret is Midnight Fleur. This one I am having no problem smelling. The sillage is quite strong. I don’t dislike it, but it may be more appropriate to cooler weather. Also, when Dahlia & Vines developed, I could smell it quite well, and I quite like it. It had a greater lasting power than the other three scents in the coffret, and I could still smell it on my skin this morning when I woke up. The sillage stayed moderate. I still like Paradise and Indigo the best of the five scents in the coffret. On to something different next time. I think I’ll sample some Jo Malones from STC.

Your weeklong project has inspired me to give this line another chance. I remember liking one of them much more than the others, but of course I don’t know which one it was. (I was also pregnant and everything was out of whack.) Next time I’m in Sephora I’m going to test all of them. I think I really want to love one of them so I can buy the pretty bottle.

This week has been so “meh” for me perfume-wise. I’ve been wearing samples to use them up and realizing I’m very indifferent to most of them. Need to get back to the ones I want to wear next week. The culmination of Meh this week has been to put on a JoMa scent. I have a little box of “whatever” perfume samples. Stuff I’m not really into, but aren’t necessarily bad, which is where I pulled my scents for today. I threw on some Wild Bluebell and Orange Blossom.

SOTD is Chopard Madness, Christine Nagel, perfumer. Madness is definitely a love-it or hate-it scent. Aggressive and bold in the opening, it softens to warm woods/spice with a mixed floral of rose and hibiscus. Since woody/spicy is my favorite fragrance genre, I do like this one. A little dab’ll do ya, as the saying goes. I especially love the palisander/Pao Rosa wood notes, Madness was my first encounter with these notes I have grown to love. Fortunately, it’s cool today, as both Madness – and Theorema, which I also enjoy – are definitely fall/winter scents I’d ordinarily never wear on a glorious spring day.

I just read the list of notes for Madness. Sounds like I might like it. How strong is the nubuck note (In general, I don’t like notes in the leather category)?

I’m not fond of leather, either, and on me, I don’t smell a ‘nubuck’ or leather note. percse. The drydown is velvety, perhaps that’s where the nubuck comes in, or perhaps it’s a combination of the rosewood and cotton flower (as listed in Fragrantica, although comments there keep referring to ‘cotton candy,’ it’s not that! and it’s not really sweet either) It’s strong, almost harsh in its opening, the pink pepper is noticeable, and you must like woods to enjoy this scent (I’m very fond of cedar but many aren’t and these woods are reminiscent of cedar in a way). The florals are soft and diffused, really, spice and woods is what I get the most.

I’m at Mom’s with no JMs except Amber and Lavender which I only use as a room spray due to high headache potential so I sprayed the furniture with it and doused myself in Padparadscha instead. Do I get partial credit? I would wear Blackberry & Bay if I had a bottle but I keep putting it off as too safe. Maybe when I’m working in an office again.
Actually, I got a hugely rose scented hug from Mom as she left for a luncheon and I smell faintly of Padparadscha (which doesn’t last long for me) and SSS Velvet Rose which makes a very interesting mix: rose-clove-vinegar-incense.

Even though I have a lot of Jo Malone, I only own one by Ms. Nagel. Her creations have something about them that don’t work with me. -Like the opposite of that ‘special something’ that makes me fall in love. So, SOTD is her recent Birch and Black Pepper over Nutmeg and Ginger bath oil, after using Pomegranate Noir soap this morning. I can’t stop sniffing myself.

Yesterday I reported that Wisteria and Violet wasn’t working for me. When it finally wore off I applied French Lime Blossom before taking the baby for a walk. That’s usually a favorite but didn’t hit the spot either. Along the walk I popped into Starbucks because I had a free drink on my card that was set to expire soon. As it turns out, what I really needed was a Venti S’mores Frappacino. 🙂

I’m also wearing Theorema, not only in honour of Christine Nagel but also NST. It belongs to a category I call NST Classics – not the usual suspects like No 5 or Shalimar, but perfumes I would probably have never heard of without NST. These are not the strange cult-y ones or fashionable or super luxurious scents, but proper perfumes, sometimes discontinued, always high quality, with a sizeable following on NST. Things like Bulgari Omnia or Jacomo Silences or Donna Karan Black Cashmere. And Theorema.

Well, it was very interesting to see if I had anything by Nagel besides Theorema and a small decant of Ambre Soie that someone gave me. It turns out she created Oriental Brulant, which I have a decant of. So that was my choice of three for the day (I don’t really care for Jo Malone). I wasn’t really up for Oriental Brulant, which I don’t love, so I went with Ambre Soie–luckily it is a cool foggy morning here–which I had never given a good wearing. Unfortunately, I’m finding it gorgeous! And that’s really rare for me with modern fragrances. I’m loving the anise note, which makes it different than Theorema. Don’t even want to think about how much this one costs!!

I think this was when perfume changed from an interest to an obsession–in Harrod’s with Wild Fig & Cassis layered with Nutmeg & Ginger. It’s nice. I will always associate it with that trip. Mauboussin, which Angela described as, “a perfume that could have scented the runway during Yves Saint Laurent’s Ballets Russes collection.” I should remember to wear it in the fall, but the weather was clear and cool this morning, so I’m pretending it’s not spring. 🙂

Gorgeous. Any Anne Pliska fans who haven’t tried it, should. I’m going to put some on as soon as I finish reading today’s comments.

No Christine Nagel here, so I’m wearing Opardu, a little decant of which I picked up when STC was having a sale on Puredistance. I liked it when I tried it from a vial some time ago, but it has much better presence & longevity from the atomizer. Can’t imagine I’ll ever spring for their aspirational prices, but this is one of the better, non-functional lilacs I’ve tried. Also getting a decent carnation note.

You smell fabulous. Opardu is one of my favorites!

As planned, trying JM Black Vetyver Cafe today. It started out nicely, but despite liberal dousing, it was gone by the time I got to work. Grumble grumble. I do expect perfumes to at least outlast my commute. Mutter mutter mutter. Should worn Theorema.

Laughed out loud at expecting perfumes to outlast your commute. That’s a disappointingly low expectation to not have met. I’ve always liked BVC and, now that it’s discontinued, regret not buying a full bottle. It reminds of of a pancake breakfast. Perhaps that’s why it doesn’t bother me as much if it wears off so early?

I have no JM perfumes and only two by Christine Nagel – Mouboussin and NR For Her EDT. I love love love the Mouboussin but it didn’t seem right for our spring weather here in VA, so I went with the NR. This is usually a bedtime scent for me, but I’ve enjoyed it today.

Counting minis, I have several by Nagel — I love her way with spices. I could have chosen Rose Absolue or Theorema, but I went for my only full-sized bottle: Si Lolita. It’s a perfect fresh sweet peppery floral for a chilly spring day, I enjoy it so much.

I received a box of JM minis about a decade ago, but never became enamored of any…

JMs that I very much like but do not own: Red Roses, Iris and White Musk, and – though it’s too short-lived Oud and Bergamot. One that I keep verging on actually buying is Geranium & Verbena!

SOTD: D&G Light Blue, which despite its ubiquity (or maybe because of it), I’ve actually never smelled before until now. Can’t say I was missing much. It smells like a fizzy lemonade mocktail on me, and not in a good way. :-/

I remember really liking Dark Amber & Ginger Lily when I tried it years ago. Wish I was wearing that instead!

I’m wearing my only Christine Nagel- Guerlain Gourmand Coqin. Perfect today when I’m tired and the weather is rainy and windy.

SOTD = Jo Malone Blue Agava & Cacao

I love Jo Malone fragrances and own 21 FBs (3 are 100 mLs) and 11 minis. Accounting for duplicates and excluding decants and samples, I have 378 dual-layering and 3,276 triple-layering possibilities. Yes, I’m a nerd 🙂

The Blue Agava & Cacao smelled great but was anemic in both longevity and sillage. I took the opportunity to try Puredistance White. Wowee! On the flip side, it reminds me a lot of AG Heure Exquise but I do not have it handy for comparison. Heure Exquise on discount is less than 1/10 the price of White!

Wearing Jo Malone Tudor Rose and Amber, from a sample, which is both a JM and by Christine Nagel. As saffron is not listed as one of the notes, I am officially completely ignorant of what a rose/saffron scent actually smells like. I’ll have to sniff some actual saffron and see if that helps. I wanted to wear Mauboussin, but was afraid it’d be a little much for the allergist’s office. When the TR&A fades (which seemed to happen much sooner the first time I wore it–has anyone else noticed that when you’re waiting for a short-lived perfume to fade so you can wear something else, it seems to last twice as long?), I plan to break out the Mauboussin. I can use the bonus points, having been very dilatory lately. This weekend I plan to finally read all the haikus and limericks from last weekend, having failed utterly to compose one of my own in a timely manner. And I see that in two weeks, we’ll be scenting a literary character. I’m going to have to start thinking about it nowish. I’ve already written out my post for the Freebiemeet tomorrow, so that’s something. (And now I’m starting to babble. Time to read everyone else’s comments, and do a few chores, and get some sleep.)

I was actually surprised by the lack of love for JM scents with this community project!Very interesting!!My favorite from the line is the Red Roses Cologne, and Ginger Cookie was lovely too.Yesterday’s SOTD was Lutens Louve though.Love the almondy-cherry marzipan of Louve.Sooo good.Happy Weekend!I’m on a fragrance sabbatical for a bit…

I’m not familiar with Louve, will add it to my sample list. It sounds really nice though. I really like the similar scent combo in L’Artisan’s Traversee du Bosphore. Do you know how it compares?
