Wednesday scent of the day 4/22

Posted by Robin on 22 April 2015 151 Comments

NASA selfie

Happy Earth Day! What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

In lieu of actually kissing dirt to mark the day, I'm wearing Isabelle Doyen's fantastic Turtle Vetiver Front for LesNez.

Reminder: this Friday, 24 April, wear something from Annick Goutal or perfumer Isabelle Doyen.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Goutal’s Myrrhe Ardente. I wanted to include one of the 4 Orientalistes and today seemed like a myrrh day. I’ve never tried Turtle Front but I have a sample set of Back, which is great. I mean the fragrance is great. ( of course having a sample set is a great pleasure as well)

I wish they’d do another vetiver, but maybe they are done. Hope LesNez is not done altogether…

Hmmm. It is rather weird. Manoumalia got a new bottle and a huge price increase, and everything else just vanished. Hopefully they’re just slow on giving them new looks too? One can hope…

I just checked their site and all 4 fragrances have been given new bottles, very pretty ones. I can’t remember how much I paid for Manoumalia, but they still sell generous samples at a reasonable price.

Isn’t Stephane Humbert Lucas the perfumer / front-man / brand ambassador for LesNez? Maybe he’s too busy promoting his namesake luxury niche line with prices to match.

As far as I know the owner is called René Schifferle and he has worked with 2 perfumers: Sandrine Videault for Manoumalia and Isabelle Doyen for the rest of the collection.

Celebrating Earth Day and Arbor Day with a mini nature getaway for the next few days, hoping to see some early migrating birds and spring wildflowers in bloom. Leaving the camping gear home this trip – it’s been co-o-old this week, woke up to patches of wet, white stuff on the ground! – staying at a historic lodge in a state park instead. But we have warm clothes, bird and wildflower identification books, binoculars and healthy snacks and I have my ‘outdoorsy’ scents with me. SOTD is Clinique Wrappings, a vintage mini of Ted Lapidus Creation for tomorrow, and I’ll be joining you on Friday in AG Mandragore. (Just in case, I also brought a few SSS samples of her woodsy scents to enjoy in front of the huge old stone fireplace at night. I couldn’t help myself!) Wishing everyone a great rest of the week and a wonderful weekend ahead.

Hiram Green Shangri La. I’m not so sure about my compatibility with this one. I like part of it very much, but there’s simultaneously some combination of notes that reminds me of Opium, and that’s making me a bit uncomfortable, since it feels too heavy for a sunny spring day. We’ll see how this progresses throughout the day, since I really want this one to work for me.

That is a great perfumista story you have there, Eleebelle. I’m so glad you were rewarded with a drydown you love. I haven’t tried any of the Hiram Greens yet. Everyone seems to love them here on the blogs. Now you’ve made me more curious. I like things that have a big arc, scents that are really non linear. Will stick it in my to try list, once Mt. Sample shrinks just a smidge 😀

I WAS going to wear Volutes today, but I forget and left the house with no perfume (gasp!!!!!). Luckily, the honey musk body cream I put on last night is still going strong.

I recently acquired samples of Mitsouko edt and edp. I think I’ll try them out tonight – I am detected to “get” this one, even if I don’t love it 😉

Not sure that I’m on message, but as I bought the En Passant travel set yesterday, I of course had to wear it – lilacs have just started to bloom here. I smell less of the cucumber then I remembered and more of something like pollen or honey, almost like a sweet linden note (is that the wheat?). But no matter, it’s absolutely lovely.

En Passant, together with Angéliques sous la Pluie, was my first Malle purchase. It’s such a successful interpretation of the note. I love lilacs too, there are plenty of them in Dutch gardens.

It’s in fact my first, too – I received the coffret as a present, so I had 5ml of everything. With POAL this is enough for some time, but with En Passant not quite.

Doing a bunch of errands today, and trying to repair the sagging shelves in my closet (EEP!!) Haven’t chosen a scent yet, but it’s likely to be either The Unicorn Spell or Heure Exquise, depending on which I find first.

Back with (I hope) the means to repair the shelves. Gah.

And I ran across my sample of Nuit Etoilee first, so that is what I was wearing. It’s gone now. Predictably, it’s not nearly floral enough for my tastes, although I find it pleasant and would probably enjoy it more as an ambiance sort of fragrance.

Now, I think I will go spritz some Crown Bouquet for that big ol’ smackeroonie of galbanum+marigold. It just makes me silly happy.

Fix those shelves, you don’t want to have everything collapse & land in a heap! Will try Crown Bouquet one of these (warmer) days, though marigold can sometimes be tricky. Back to cool weather frags, it just SNOWED.

Oh, they already collapsed. Luckily the stuff sitting on them was just towels and sheets, no perfume. 🙂

Come to find out yesterday that the reason the shelves on MY side of the closet didn’t stand up to the weight and the ones on The CEO’s side did was that he never put in the side supports on my side!! Oops. So I’m going to try to remedy that issue today.

Crown Bouquet is unfortunately discontinued… found mine at… perfume.com, I think? About five years ago. The middle of it is very very soft white flowers and the base is musk and maybe a bit of cedar, but that galbanum SLAP is so awesome.

At work, I always keep a rollerball of Pacifica Island Vanilla because vanilla is very calming to me, and work is not! Now that I have a full bottle of Essences Insensees (Diptyque), I keep my sample at work. I got that idea from someone on NST 🙂

Is Pacifica going out of business? I noticed that every fragrance item on the website is significantly reduced including the choose three spray coffret set (which is selling now for $40.00)?

Oh, I hope not! Pacifica is one of my favorite cheap and cheerful brands. Sometimes companies have sales when they are changing packaging, so maybe that’s it? I like their artwork, so I hope that they don’t change that.

Catching up on Goutals with an Orientalists frenzy: Myrrh Ardente last night, Encens Flamboyant today, and just switched to Ambre Fetiche for bed. Work totally sucked tonight and my amber hug is working a treat.

I remember at school we always planted trees on Arbor Day, but I dont think most kids even know what it is now.. 🙁 hopefully they’re all doing something positive for Earth Day 🙂

I put on a little FM Portrait of a Lady today. Apparently today is also Administrative Professionals Day because I was surprised with a few gifts when I got in the office.

It was supposed to rain today, but so far it’s been gorgeous and sunny out, so I’m not complaining and enjoying the nice weather while it lasts!

Right now, I am going commando until my shower but I’m wasting time on the Now Smell this and trolling E-bay. I’m thinking about wearing Nasomatto Nuda today or Jicky but Nuda is about the only tuberose/jasmine scent that I can stand (tuberose is one of my enemies).

LOL, that’s exactly what I’m doing! I was just looking at a Deneuve perfume ad, that is, for her own perfume. It’s a black and white photo with a red lipstick spot on her nose, like a clown nose, spoofing her ubiquitous Chanel ads, I guess. The tag line was something like, “Inside every woman there is another woman. I designed this perfume for the woman inside.”

Sample number 2: Mon Parfum Cheri, Par Camille.

Nice violet dirtied by some patchouli and rounded with a dark plum. I was afraid of this one (the first few seconds are a bit nose-wrinkling), but I quite like it now.

Bottega Veneta Knot from a sample. I have one of those magazine/catalog inserts of Knot sitting around, so I thought I would give my sample another go. I wasn’t too excited about Knot when I first tried it, but it’s really very nice. It brings some spring to a day (week?) when Mother Nature decided to ignore the calendar, and gently remind us that cold/wind/clouds is a thing she can whip out on a whim.

My daughter’s prom is this weekend, and Saturday night’s predicted low is 37F. Pondering wraps/shawls.

Perfume Intelligence lists the edp differently from the edt. The description of the edp is “notes of frangipani, ylang ylang, jasmine, vanilla, vetiver, sandalwood and amber.” The edt is described as “notes of frangipani, tiare, jasmine notes, incense, vanilla, copahu balm, pepper, ylang-ylang absolute, vetiver, sandalwood, amber and styrax.” I’m not sure where my root beer notes are coming in, but sandalwood and vetiver may be where your pencil shavings are coming in.

I am fairly confident that my sample is edt….the notes listed are notes that I very much like…and yet, Songes just wasn’t for me…it reminded me a bit of Angel (which, aside from the sweet aspect, also had the pencil shavings to my nose)

This was one of the first FBs I bought when I was able to wear perfume again (after 25 years of hyperreaction to scent of any kind). I’m prone to having things smell synthetic, but this doesn’t do that on me. With more experimentation under my belt, it is a bit simple, cologne-y, though.

Not sure what’s going on with Goutal’s distribution–neither Nordstrom nor NM seems to carry the line anymore. But it’s well represented on Saks’ site, and they even have Le Chevrefeuille in the new packaging. But yeah, much better deal at Beauty Encounter.

I adore Poivre Piquant! I’ve gone through a few samples of it already, however, the last sample I owned had a pronounced licorice note to it that I couldn’t tolerate, so I swapped it away. I wonder if it it was just an old sample/had gone off?

SOTD: Serge Lutens Arabie, which smells a lot like a bath bomb from Lush. There’s an herbal/cedar/sweet, almost soapy smell to it that’s rather pleasant. Lately I’ve been in somewhat of a purging mood, so I’m making a concerted effort to drain all my samples before I start acquiring any more. Also, the weather has been wonderfully cool and truly spring-like lately, so I’m taking advantage by wearing those scents that stand up well to the lower temperatures.

    Happy Earth Day, everyone!

SOTD: A fabulous little store called the Alchemist closed in Denver not too long ago. She had the best perfumes, and introduced me to some great ones. So sad she didn’t make a go of it…construction all around her. But I wanted to help her with her final sale, and got a couple perfumes I would not normally have tried. One is Santa Maria Novella Gardenia, which I have on today; it seems very “earthy” for Earth Day. I smell dirt, and leaves and a bit of the gardenia. I love it, and didn’t expect to. Anyone else like it?
Also got some Caterina de Medici, which I like and a linden scent.

Tauer’s Rose Flash today. Love this, and now I’m curious about his vanilla. I bought the rollerball of this, but may need the Rose Flash spray, it’s that pretty and amazingly long wearing. It does not have the usual Tauer base, so if you’ve not fared well with the others in the line, but do like photoreal jammy roses, try this. (*quietly–I like it even better than my beloved Rose Jam wash*) Be well.
