Tuesday scent of the day 3/31

Posted by Robin on 31 March 2015 122 Comments

spicebomb

Say goodbye to March! And do tell us what fragrance you're wearing today.

I'm wearing Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb.

Reminder: this Friday, 3 April, is Chanel TNG: wear something by perfumer Olivier Polge. If you don't have anything by Olivier Polge, do feel free to wear an older Chanel fragrance, or skip it altogether.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I have only tried a few Amouage..Gold not being one of them. I need to get more samples from them. Would like to try Fate at some point.

Hallelujah, goodbye, March! Eau Premiere to add some sparkle to this foggy, dreary day.
(did you all see the email from Saks about an in-store appearance by Kilian Hennessy in Apr? I wonder if those things are typically mobbed or what).

Ocean Blue by Escada (1995)….another LE described as “green marine floral with fresh fruits and woods”…I am picking up a “salty” quality as well…..

Starting in 1993 Escada began their limited edition yearly spring scents…same bottles but different colors/juices…they continue with this today but the older ones seem to have more depth to them and a more interesting drydown due to the notes (oakmoss, cedar, amber, etc)…the current ones seem very “light musk” to me in the drydown.

And as an aside the original Escada (anyone remember that one?) was gorgeous!!!! peachy, coconut, vanilla, amber……not overly sweet…just rich and lush! same bottle as the limited editions but it was clear instead of colored…..

Was that the Chiffon Sorbet one? I don’t remember it, but I’ve heard people talk about it.

I’ve got a bottle of Margaretha Ley that’s really nice – a BWF with a touch of coconut and vanilla, very tropical.

          • bardot says:
            31 March 2015 at 12:04 pm

no I am talking about the one you have…don’t you just love it? Chiffon Sorbet, on the other hand, was the first of the limited editions that began in 1993…it had the same bottle as the clear Margareth Ley but it was a frosted bluish purple color……

It’s a grey day but I’m wearing sunshine – Jour d’Hermes. A shout out to the wonderful manager of the perfume department at Bloomies Old Orchard. When I was buying my bottle of Narcisco there, I asked for samples of Jour and Voyage, and she gave me this marvelous mini bottle of Jour. It holds 12.5 ml! I also got a sample of Acqua di Parma Colonia Leather, which smells fabulous on my husband. Was excited to see that they carry the whole Acqua di Parma line there now. The whole experience made me remember that I really should give bricks and mortar stores more of a chance instead of just buying online.

SOTD= Séville à l’Aube. This makes me so happy, I’m thinking of stopping my rotation and just wearing this everyday…I wore Iris Poudre yesterday and it was wonderful, but this is better…Of course, my little bottle of Scent Of Hope is in the mail, so I’ll see how I feel after I have that in my possession sgain as well. My new theory of how to determine what is full bottle worthy is to just see which samples and decants I go through the fastest. By that reckoning, Iris Poudre is at the top of my to buy list now. How do others decide what is FB worthy?

That’s a pretty good way to go about it. If I go through two samples or a decant fairly quickly, if I am bummed more than usual that they are drained and I am trying to get drops out even though it’s bone dry.. it usually means I really like it enough to want a fb. Or if Donatella is listening…enough to just want another decant;).

Any scent that makes me swoon and want to wear for days on end is definitely fb worthy….I have been thinking about blind buying this one for a while now b/c everyone raves about it…but then I read somewhere that it could be a bit “soapy” with some…..what is your impression? and last I looked on fragrancenet it was selling for a song with a 20 percent coupon….I say go for it!

Well, I’ll be the wet blanket. I don’t get soapy, but the orange blossom smells like grape candy to me. Gourmet candy, with some lavender and incense, but still candy. I think both the too-sweet and two-soapy factions are small minorities, but I still think it might not be a safe blind buy.

Too bad BWF week is when I’m traveling for work. I was going to wear BWF’s all week! But a) I don’t want to pack all BWF’s and b) they’re not really appropriate for the office in April in Boston. I’ll have to do my own personal BWF week when I get back.

It is quite different, yes. It’s less of a Fracas-y white floral — though it does open with the bubblegum aspect of tuberose/jasmine — and more of a musky/woody suntan-lotion skin scent. A bit sweet at first but I really like the drydown. Reminds me somewhat of Tocca Margaux.

Hmm, I look at Tom Ford and think ,”creative process harnessing by the money making machine” and want to look further for what I smell like, but your description of Violet Blond makes me want to sniff it, at least…. It was very windy here in Michigan yesterday, guess it got all the way to you today. LOL!

Hmmm. I would say it is worth a sniff. For a violet made with a more authentic creative process you could try Violette Sacree by Au Pays de la Fleur Oranger. There is a nice review of it on here. I have a sample and fell in love with it. It’s kind of mysterious…

I’m Polge-ing it (Jacques, not Olivier) again, in Chanel 1932 again – just the parfum this time, no layering. 1932 got such poor reviews, pretty much across the board, for being disappointingly dull and characterless and without staying power – everybody said, “It’s pretty, but it smells like all the other Chanels, and it’s JUST pretty, not distinctive, nothing new here. Also, overpriced.”

The point about being overpriced is probably deserved. And the EdT in particular is quite fleeting. But it makes me so *happy* that I can’t regret my decants. It reminds me quite a bit of 31 Rue Cambon in the drydown (yes, the parfum has a drydown, and even with my scent-eating skin I got six hours out of it yesterday), without the sweet amber of 31 RC. I have a hard time regretting the just-pretties.

If it makes you happy, that is all that counts! The only LEs that I really like are Bois des Iles and Sycomore. So… there is a lot of room for dissent in the line.

Since it is cold still, and snowing now!, I am taking the opportunity to dive into some of the many treasures I got from the swapmeet. It was just awesome and I truly appreciate everyone who swapped with me. Today I am wearing some of the gorgeous and I’ve never smelled before, but now has completely captivated my interest Lancome Cuir de Lancome from the lovely “J”. And also a dab of Guerlain Vetiver. I smell soooo good!!

As far as Cuir de Lancome goes, I am just so happy to fully admit that I am so glad that I was wrong… I usually avoid leathers b/c they just don’t work for me unless the leather is very soft. I’d see all these positive comments about CdL on the blogs, but I just thought it wouldn’t be for me. Oh glory! All I can say about CdL is that it smells to me like a bunch of buttery bearded iris tied with a leather cord. I get more iris out of this fragrance than nearly any other iris fragrance I own. The birch tar masquerading as vetiver helps too. It is just about as perfect as it gets. Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happily surprised when I’ve smelled any fragrance I’ve tested. This has rocketed right up to my HG list.

Felt the same way, I can appreciate leathers, but they don’t seem to suit me….until I met Cuir de Lancome, thanks to all the glowing reviews!

SOTD is SSS Lieu de Reves. I love violets anytime, but never more so than in early spring. LdR, with its powdery, slightly woody violets, is perfect for a chilly, cloudy day with peeks of sun promising warmth to come and peeks of green sprouting from the ground. Our scilla are blooming – tiny little deep blue flowers that scamper wildly across the still-sleeping grass and flower beds and then disappear as quickly as they arrived. A place of spring dreams . . . right in my backyard.

I am starting to discover that Lieu de Reves and it’s sister “To Dream” are probably my favorite treatment of violets. Not too sweet, but nice and warm and plush.

Wearing Ferre, either since I was thinking about it during A’s easy perfumes post, or because it’s the middle of the work week.

I decided to try layering Demeter Tomato and Un Jardin en Mediterrannee. They’re a pretty natural match. The tomato leaf note fits right in.

SOTM was Rose Jam shower gel and Ro’s Argan body stuff. Ive realised I much prefer the smell of the African Paradise body conditioner and wish LUSH would do a perfume of that!!

After that was Plum, and now to bed is Cologne Du 68, which is a bedtime regular.

Nicolai’s Eau d’Ete, on a very springy day. I didn’t have Bvlgari’s Au Thé Vert, to try my corrected Ranger fragrance from yesterday. (Thanks Rapp!) This was the cleanest, simple green thing I could grab. Be well.
