Thursday scent of the day 3/19

Posted by Robin on 19 March 2015 132 Comments

Aedes de Venustas, image for Oeillet Bengale

Another week is flying by (as is the morning...I'm running late). What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Aedes de Venustas Oeillet Bengale.

Reminder: this Friday, 20 March, we're doing Nouveau Niche...wear a perfume from a new (2010+) niche brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am sampling 3 scents today. Very ambitious of me.
First one is Granada by memo-orange blossom is nice.
Next is french leather- its smells like a mainstream perfume I have smelled before but I can’t put my finger on it.
The last one is Sunshine by Amouage-when I first tested it-I thought is this Amouage or did they send me the wrong sample? The dry down is fantastic. I feel very sexy wearing it. Maybe FB worthy. Still need to give it some time. Journey Woman is still my fav.

I’ve been reading that Sunshine is not a typical Amouage, but more off the beaten track. They have made other fragrances that seemed very different from the mainstays though. I need to order a sample of it.

Another Amouage for me as SOTD: Epic Woman. Most Amouages seem to get better as the day goes by. As does this one. I think I like Lyric and Ubar slightly better but Epic is very nice as well.

From my samples I wore Lubin Korrigan and my first thought was, I would buy a bottle of this RIGHT NOW. But it’s kind of front-loaded, because it’s not very interesting a few hours later. Still, that opening…

Clothing shopping in an Italian department store called Coin and stumbled across a collection of I Profumi di Firenze scents, not the whole line but a bunch of them, most in 12-mL sprays or perfume concentrates. If I’m in Florence I am going to have to buy THAT, obviously, so I got three: Limone di Sicilia, Florentina 24 Rosa e Fiore, and Costa Mediterranea. Apparently I was really near the actual store, which would presumably have the entire line, so I might go there tomorrow…

They’re really wee so they’re airline-friendly. The Limone is just insane, this EXPLOSION of citrus, and it’s a perfume concentrate so it’s 60% essential oil. I am definitely going to the actual shop today!

Eat all the gelato!! Lol, great advice! I love Firenze 🙂 I got to spend Easter and spring there a couple years ago, If you have already been to Grom, (the lines can be annoying) my favourites were Gelateria de’ Neri and Perchè No! Highly recommend visiting Piazzale Michelangelo hilltop square for the best panoramic views of the city, go at dawn for a beautiful experience 🙂

I did a bunch of research and everyone seemed to think that Gelateria dei Neri was the place to go, so we did, and it was heaven. Salted caramel omg! We’re going back today (Friday the 20th), our last day in Florence. Then we’re headed off, for a complete change of pace, to Berlin. No gelato there but I guess wursts and strudel?

I am wearing Phaedon Cendres de Thé which is fine up top but the laundry detergent musks in the drydown kill it for me–it is just bit too “fresh.” It needs some lapsong souchong and cardamom funk to give it some spine.

I don’t remember it as a strong lilac. As I recall, I liked it but decided in the end that it was a bit muffled compared with my ideal for a Vacances replacement. I’d get it out to refresh my memory, but it’s too cold here today for a spring perfume.

Trying MDCI Cuir Garamante from a generous sample given to me. It’s a very odd leather fragrance in that it doesn’t really smell much like leather. It’s more an afterthought. It’s well rounded, but I’m not sure it would be a go-to scent.

Totally switching gears today, my scents are influenced by tonight’s classic film series’ presentation at our historic theater, the Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night.” Owww! (as the song goes) You know you’re old when you’ve seen a ‘classic’ film the first time around! 🙂

SOTD is Molinard Les Orientaux Vanille Patchouli, nice for daytime with just enough patchouli to satisfy me, along with a caramelly vanilla and a bit of spice. SOTE for tonight’s movie will have to be an unrepentant patchouli (applied lightly, of course!), perhaps Fancy Nights? Something to ‘make me feel alright’ . . .

I slathered on some Nuxe oil and think it will do as my SOTMorning at least. I always forget how fragrant and nice it is. I was trying to use up a facial sunscreen that didn’t agree with me by using it on my arms yesterday and I’m all scaly and dry now. Think the rest will go in the garbage (it was a tiny tube and I used most of it anyway). Now that I’m a scaly armed, bumpy faced thing I guess I will put off the new driver license photo for another week.

Needed a fragrance this morning for a long meeting at my son’s school… it had to be sophisticated without smelling to “rich,” and also have some hipster street cred, AND also make me feel smart…. You know those tricky meetings where everyone is technically on a first name basis, but professional and unprofessional chicanery is just below the surface. . .

So I sniffed and sniffed and nothing was quite right until…tah dah! A “new niche” jump off the shelf and grabbed my arm–Trayee. It was/is perfect for the day. Thank you Neela and Bertrand!!

Commando today… Got an email from my new boss with a ton of deliverables for today, so had to run out the door quickly… Yesterday was Oiellet de Bengale – I really do love it.

P.S. Guerlain’s Terracotta is being re-released. I ordered some on Nordstrom for 3/27 shipping last week – wondering if it was really going to ship. But…I just got a call from Bergdorf’s today inquiring if I was still interested because she could take my order. (I had talked to the SA last September…that’s impressive.)

The only one I know is there is Ambre Nuit. I think I have Atelier Cologne’s new Pomelo in there. I don’t remember when Atelier started. Somehow, I don’t think of them as niche any more–Sephora carries ’em. Hmm. Tomorrow’s challenge may be tough.

Atelier Cologne was founded in 2010 so it certainly counts. With snow in the forecast I have to rethink my choice!

SOTD is Guerlain Bois d’Armenie. I wanted something warm and interesting. B-B-b-rrrr. It is cold here and the snow is coming again.

LOL! I think it’s ironic that you’re wearing that one, because guess what I’m wearing?? Caron Montaigne. I love it! So we’re not scent twins, maybe scent switchies? 😉

I like that! Scent switchies. Witchy-switchies? I was thinking of Montaigne the other day b/c I dug out an old PdN tester for Odalisque during chypres week. I had not really ever given it a good chance with my nose. I’m smelling it, liking it, smelling it, looking for tons of oakmoss, but getting that, hey I’ve smelled this before kind of vibe. And then it hit me: It’s very similar to the middle and base of the Montaigne we/you have. The opening is different. But that super thick white floral jasmine-y and woods combo that you can wear like a coat – totally similar.

I’d own a FB of Odalisque if it wasn’t for the white musk drydown. 😛

I need to go look at the notes for Montaigne vs. Odalisque. Are they similar? I’m definitely a jasmine ho, which I guess is why I love this so much.

And speaking of “super thick white floral jasmine and woods” – are you a Samsara (especially the vintage with real sandalwood) fan? Funny we’ve never discussed that one.

I’m wearing Maria Candida Gentile Sideris. According to online information, the line began in 2009, but it didn’t surface on perfume blogs until 2012, and only became available in the U.S. in the last year or two, so I’m counting it as nouveau niche. 🙂

Sideris smells great, and its medium weight incense is very nice for this cool Unlocking weather.

I don’t seem to have many nouveau niche perfumes, and most of the ones I do have (like Ann Gerard, Ys Uzac and Mary Greenwell Plum) are too light for the current cool weather. Now, if I had gotten busy and kept up with Slumberhouse and Kerosene, I might have more options, but I was feeling new brand fatigue. So I think tomorrow’s poll will be useful in identifying the ones I’ve missed that are worth trying.

Today’s scent is Marni, over a muted rose and rosehip body oil. I love Marni but have found that it is so shy in the dry down that I would lose the rose. Layering it over the body oil has worked perfectly: it lasts all day, and carries a bit more depth.

I found this interview with Kilian Hennessy in his pied a terre, with a photo gallery and video. It’s interesting to see his perfume collection. And you don’t see a perfumer standing on his marble mantle piece every day.

        YES – THAT Diorissimo bottle!

It’s an interesting collection – lots of classics: Guerlain, Dior, Caron and Chanel, but no Hermes, no Amouage. Old mainstream, like Obsession, but nothing very current.

Ironically, I got my Misia sample:). Something in this is medicinal or- I hate to say this and don’t normally-but bug repellent or something..sunscreen cream, idk something.. in this and I don’t like it. Bummer. I do like that it’s not sweet and it does have a good rose/violet powder thing going on..it’s more ‘mature’ than DdR and not really sweet like DdR. I am not huge on violet. Perhaps there is too much in this one for me. I do get that dirty, earthy, cold iris. Extra earth and dirt..perhaps has too much dirt in there for me, idk. Not loving it…maybe it takes a wear or two.

Aww schucks, that’s a pity!I really like the old-school feel of Misia!I found it a nice balance between the rose and violet, with a sudden blast of earthy iris.

I wore it last night for the first time. The first hour or so, there’s something sharp I didn’t care for, then it mellows and is quite lovely all the way down. I am a rose, and a violet, and a rose-violet lover, but I didn’t smell rose in this, rather violet – which was quite nice, not too sweet, – plus a rooty, earthy iris, which I didn’t care for as much. Yes, I found the iris rather cold, too, but then it’s Chanel, and I always find Chanel’s elegance a trifle detached and aloof. I like earthy, dirty, but ‘warm’ earthy, dirty. Still, I liked it, didn’t love it, will try it again. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy it as it softens and dries down.

I don’t get much rose either..mainly violet and a dirty iris..old school in a good way, yes. I just don’t think I am huge on violet or iris. But do like an iris or violet-rose combo. LR by Malle was nice but too sharp for my tastes. I don’t care for his take on rose. DdR is great..a bit too sweet though for me. But a great scent. I am really picky with iris..so far my likes are Bois d’Iris by TDC and maybe La Pausa…but where is the lasting power on that one? lol. The Prada is a good one..too sweet some for me. The Absolue has too much dirty iris in there for me. And really don’t care for Lutens ISM. Oh well. Other scents in the sea I suppose! LOL.

Wearing vintage Dune today, a favorite for cool and rainy days like today. I find the name of this perfume ironic; it never conjures images of sun, sand, and beach to me. I far prefer wearing it in the cooler – but not deepest winter – months. Still love it after all these years.
