Monday scent of the day 3/9

Posted by Robin on 9 March 2015 174 Comments

Frederic Malle trees

Double whammy: Monday, plus Daylight Savings. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Frederic Malle En Passant, another fragrance by the fabulous Olivia Giacobetti.

Reminder: this Friday, 13 March, we're doing Old School Niche: wear a perfume from L'Artisan Parfumeur, Diptyque or Frederic Malle. Double bonus points if the fragrance was released before 2010!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

You smell great of course. I wanted something strong, and bold today so I’m wearing Rien. I still need to sniff the Intense version. Have a great week and a good Monday!

If you’re behind, and I’m behind, and everybody we know is behind, doesn’t that somehow make us all on track, in some Einsteinian sorta way?

I could use another couple hours myself. Couldn’t fall asleep so stayed up too late watching a stupid Bollywood movie on my iPad. The iPad needs an automatic shutdown app that senses when really you ought to stop for the night.

I haven’t chosen a fragrance yet today. I am so depressed about the death of my cat Sunny, and I think that I have a bad case of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Although we haven’t had truly horrible weather other parts of the country have seen, we haven’t had more than a few days of sunshine since November. I think, in honor of Friday’s theme I will pull out some of the L’Artisan samples I received last year and have yet to try.

I’m so sorry about your cat. My sincere condolences. I too suffer from SAD. Just in case you’ve not tried it, I found some relief with a therapy lamp that emits light waves that mimic those of natural sunlight. I got mine on Amazon for around $50. Also, although I was really skeptical, I found that GABA and L-Theanine supplements have been particularly helpful. Finally, since this is a perfume blog, I’d be delighted to send you some perfume samples to brighten your day. 🙂

I had a really remarkable cat about 15 years ago that came to me under remarkable circumstances. This cat was really amazing. When he died suddenly and mysteriously, it took me a long time to recover. I have cats now, but it will never be the same for me. Just take your time and eventually it will pass. It’s always OK to not wear fragrances so you don’t associate them with a bad experience.

Hugs to you, my dear. Invest in a full spectrum light, they really do help. I use mine for reading. I am sorry about the loss of your feline companion, I think we feel their loss so deeply because they understand us and love us in a way no other being in our life does.

Sometimes I think it’s better to go with the flow rather than fight it. Our emotions are legitimate and should be respected, painful though they may be, they will ebb and flow with time. I hope some peace and comfort will find its way to you soon. Sending ((hugs)).

So sorry to hear about your poor kitty. We lost our 16-year old cat shortly before we had to move to Arkansas. But it would have been a really hard move for her and I’m glad she didn’t have to tackle that transition. SAD is a booger. I don’t have a full-spectrum light. I tend to compensate by exercising and getting outdoors whenever I get the chance and sometimes I just turn on every available light in the house. Feel better!

Just paid for a bottle of Mon Parfum Cheri I can’t afford but couldn’t pass up. The auction ended yesterday on Ebay at $45! Who knows when I could get it for that price again? I’ve generally had pretty good luck on ebay and the seller assures it has been kept well. Hopefully it will be the lucky gem for a steal that I think it is.

haha! Same here! 🙂 I have a couple of the blue ones as well. I’m with you. I don’t like it as well as the red, but it’s still beautiful. And while I’m not the biggest fan of citrus scents, the blue box is still so much better than so many of the men’s citrus scents on the market. The herbal dry-down is beautiful, and it really works well on a hot day. On another note, I got one bottle of the black edition, and I have to say I was kind of disappointed. It smells a lot like the red box, but it’s not nearly as complex. Would you agree?

You’re right, the red box is hard to beat. For me, the Black Edition works a little better in winter. The red is pure spring and as you said, the blue is better on hot summer days.

I think I’ve got some kind of bug… had feverish chills last night so I went to bed with nightgown, sweatpants, sweatshirt, socks, and the heating pad. Then, of course, woke up sweating later. Ugh.

Also, I kind of dissed the current version (or what I thought was the current version) of Tuvache Jungle Gardenia on my blog recently, and Jeffrey Dame of Long Lost Perfumes sent me a new bottle (now called Tuvache Gardenia) to try. I had thought he was sending me a carded sample, and was surprised.

I take it back. This is a proper bleu-cheesy gardenia – not much in the way of earthy mushroomy stuff but it does get that narcotic thing right. It is anything but thin!

I remember wearing Jungle Gardenia back in the day (and my father complaining it was too strong!) I didn’t know it was still around even in re-formulation. Alyssa Ashley also made a lovely gardenia (I think it was part of a “garden collection” with other solifleurs ) and I had a bottle of that as well…potent and so ridiculously affordable….

NEWS FLASH: I accidentally got a bit of Memoir Woman on my sweatshirt sleeve last night, and then a bit of Tuvache Gardenia on it this morning. Now, twelve hours later, it smells rather shockingly civetty and ripe, sort of like overapplied Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds (there’s a woman who grocery shops where I do, and she consistently wears so much that there’s this… Whopping Bodily Stink + Big Flowers thing that follows her through the store).

Word to the wise: don’t get these two anywhere near each other unless you want to smell like a used Depends. Oh dear. I’m going to have to wash it.

Since we are rhapsodizing about pines, I will chime in. I love their smell too! You expressed some curiosity about the original Pino Silvestre and I would encourage you to try a sample or small bottle because the smell, to my nose, is less pine and more fir and because Pino is really an old school fougere not a musky sweet one but rather an aromatic, dry, ambered oak mossy one. It’s pleasures are fleeting but it smells like nothing else and I really enjoy it.

I love the smell of fir, too. I made a body oil with fir EO with cocoa absolute (like Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate). Yum!

I am not a fan of oakmoss, but the mini is so cheap and so cute (kind of kitschy), that I’ll just get one. With IFRA, there probably isn’t any oakmoss on the new stuff, anyway.

sinker kit- have you tried the double distilled vetiver from Eden? the only vetiver I can wear straight up! and you are so right….they have SOOO many different types of e.o.s in just one category (like 10 different lavenders, a variety of jasmines, etc.)

          • stinker_kit says:
            9 March 2015 at 1:11 pm

Double distilled Vetiver? Sign me up! I purchased a sample of the Haitian which is dark and syrupy and wonderful. I mix it with an unscented lotion or a carrier oil and layer it with other fragrances, like jasmine soliflores.

          • bardot says:
            9 March 2015 at 1:22 pm

I don’t often do well with vetiver (unless artfully blended) but the double distilled is smooth and refined to my nose and I just love it! I do the same with my oils…add them to either coconut oil (the one that solidifies and becomes a “body butter” for me) or carrier oils (sesame, sweet almond, etc). I have also made face serums with argan/jojoba mix and Edens tamanu oil, frankincense, patchouli and lavender (all great e.o.s for mature skin which, unfortunately, I have 🙂 !!!!)

          • stinker_kit says:
            9 March 2015 at 2:19 pm

I made a similar oil for the face with sweet almond, lavender and patchouli EO. Sometimes I just put straight patchouli EO on my face because it smells so wonderful. I too, am aiding more mature skin. I may have to try the coconut oil……

Like others, I’ve started Old School Niche early with Diptyque L’Ombre Dans L’Eau. I was surprised to learn that it was created in 1983. For some reason I thought it was much newer.

Oh my goodness. When I smelled l’Ombre Dans L’Eau for the first time in 1995, I became instantly obsessed. I didn’t think it was possible for anything to smell that good. A friend was wearing it and wouldn’t tell me what it was. I searched for years to find out what he’d been wearing and that curiosity never left me. I finally discovered what it was when I moved to New York. It was probably 2000, and when I found it at a store down in Little Italy, I bought it instantly. To this day, I still think it’s Diptyque’s best, though there are certainly other beauties in their line-up. I think they’ve become less innovative over the years since they got bought out. I just hope the don’t stop making their classics.

Thank you for the compliment! I do love cats and had two beautiful long-haired sisters (or maybe medium-haired – they were rescue cats not purebred) named Bastet and Isis. Isis is still with us but Bastet died, so I am using the name in her memory. Anyway, this has started a fun tradition in my family of naming cats after various gods/goddesses, for example one sister’s cats are Artemis and Athena, and the other sister’s are Thor, Loki and Freyja.

Love your kitties’ names. My cousin once owned a cat who she had also named Freya because she was then studying up on the Norse mythos; since Freya was often portrayed (along with the famous necklace and the dwarves) as riding in a chariot pulled by two large, grey panthers, it seems perfect sense!

Actually, I just received a sample of True Lust complimentary from Parfum1 with my order and decided to try it out.

Some perfumes came to mind with this one: Cashmere Mist, Spellbound and possibly, Robe Noire.

The powdery musk is noticeable right away and I would say the perfume is ‘surrounded’ with powdery musk. The powdery/musky is stonger, in a Cashmire Mist kind of way. I noticed some yummy, dark, sweet orange as well. It smells a bit dark and sweet overall, in a Robe Noire type way almost, without nearly as much fruit. The rum is noticeable. There’s a slightly balsamic, smoked/woody apricot note in a bit of a Spellbound type way. The peachy note is probably the osmanthus and I get this note the most out of the florals. There’s a slight jasmine but the florals are pretty balanced overall. I get a little leather as is dries. Not a lot of leather though. I would say this is somewhat similar to that musky/powdery Cashmere Mist with a bit of, woody, Spellbound apricot/osmanthus note, and some sweet violet and a smidge of leather, with a dash of orange and rum on top. Again, surrounded with powdery musk. I don’t really get any coconut. Not really any ginger either. Not much lotv at all. I do like the scent some but the musky powder is a little over the top for my tastes. The florals are nice though:). I think I would really like this one if the musky powder was toned down. Eck.

That’s how this scent is for me anyway:).

Today I’m finishing the papers part of the KonMari tidying method. Some of the stuff I found was like a time capsule from another lifetime, and not in a good way. Felt so good to get rid of it!

Today I put on Imperial Opoponax. When I first tried a sample of IO, I fell head over heels and ordered a 100ml bottle from a vendor in Italy. Then I got nervous about running out and ordered another 100 ml bottle. And today I’m feeling very meh about it. Anyone experience this with a perfume?

Frags that really went from true love to meh for me the past few years (and that I had/have bottles of): L’Heure Bleue, PDR Bois de Paradise, Lancome Magie, Givenchy L’Interdit, ….. I am sure there are more and I’m just blocking them out. I confess I will get kind of spazed out if I hear that a bottle will be discontinued. Thank god for swapmeets and ebay to get rid of the unloved!

I love that book! Sometimes I just like to reread bit of it because of how wonderfully it’s written. It’s so uplifting. I’ve been doing some KonMari-ing myself in preparation for when we move next month. I got rid of a bunch of photographs that I hated from a really depressing time in my life. I wonder why I even took those photos, but then also wondered why I held on to them for so long. Getting rid of that kind of emotional baggage is so invigorating!

Now I’m just smelling mint with a touch of eau de toothpaste. Maybe it only worked for me while surrounded by the cacophony of a thousand other scents? I dunno, but I am disappoint. I love Alien Absolue but it is a bomb sillage wise. I apply with great caution and usually while in my underwear so little puffs of perfume will rise from under my clothing. I think of it as sunshine in a bottle, a radiant syrupy vanilla amber. The jasmine it contains is reading as minty and like tooth paste to your nose and this is actually quite common. You are not alone Hiddles. Put it away and try it again later on.

The Vorlon, Kosh. Oh, my head is stuffed with useless information. Bet the Alien bottle does look like him.

LOL! Well, it is not really your fault I like Mohur so much.

Ha, I really did not mean to enable but since my Iris Nazarene was missing in action, I had to make up for the hole it created 🙂

    SOTD = FM Carnal Flower

Spring has sprung and while this is not the springest of scents, it was still perfect and met the old school niche theme plus a continuation of last week’s women perfumer theme. This is by Daniela Ropion in 2005.

Sorry, lovely fragrance but it’s Dominique Ropion and he’s a man.

Was carried away by the idea of Spring this morning, so put on Chamade EdT — and loved it for the entire hour I could smell it. I need to find other concentrations of this beauty that aren’t so fleeting.

I thought I was scentless today. But I just ate a ginger candy, and as I leaned over I thought, “Wow, something smells great.” I was smelling the little bit of Ylang & Vanille I dabbed on my wrist almost 24 hours ago. I guess the ginger reset my sense of smell. Wowza!

We had our first exceptionally warm and sunny spring-like day here – warm enough to sit out on the balcony. I am luxuriating in Puredistance I, which is perfect.

This morning before I left for work I sprayed a quick mini spritz of what I have been wearing for about 9-10 days…Chanel’s Misia. I thought it was light enough and mild enough that my boss would not notice…but no…we were working on something and he told me to please move down. He did not mention my perfume but I assumed that is what it was And yet Misia is really not terribly strong but it is lasting and has that lipstick rose feel to it, yet not as blatant as FM Lipstick Rose. I sometimes only wear a scentless body lotion and he even complains about that. Also, he once complained about my fragrance when all I had used was a scented soap in the shower.
Perhaps I should not shower during my work week…that might change his thinking!
