Friday scent of the day 2/20

Posted by Robin on 20 February 2015 227 Comments

Lubin Idole

Happy One Hit Wonder Friday! Our community project for today: wear something that is the only fragrance you really like by the brand, with partial credit for a fragrance that is the only one made by the brand.

As always, do chime in even if you aren't participating in the community project.

My pick: Lubin Idole.

Reminder: next Friday, 2/27, is Spicy Friday. How spicy can you go?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Happy Friday!
SOTD: NUXE Prodigieux Le Parfum. I love the oil so having the fragrance to layer is perfect! Plus it’s the only fragrance from NUXE so double credit? Haha, it’s Friday so I can be a little greedy with my treats right? 😉

I’m wearing Houbigant Apercu parfum, a very pretty green/woody chypre, and the only Houbigant I own. Maybe a bit formal for work, but I smell fabulous!

SOTD is Nirvana Black. Sandalwood!!!!! I actually also liked Nirvana White at first, but the musk turned into laundry musk in mouth – blech! I gave my roller ball away to someone who wears it better.

    Happy Friday!
I picked Askew by Humiecki & Graef. It is one of the best perfume names ever, and I was very attracted by it the first few times I wore it, so I bought a decant. The attraction, however, died, and my eyes have been glancing over that particular decant for ages.

I understand why I fell for it with its majestic woods and smokiness, but it is very unapologetic and stern.

So all in all a very shortlived One Hit Wonder :).

Wearing Nirvana Black from Elizabeth and James. They’ve only made two, but Nirvana White made no impression on me whatsoever. This is now absolutely one of my favorite winter comfort scents.

A belated thank you to everyone who commented last week on my question about tracking what scents you’ve tried! I end up getting so far behind in my commenting and not appropriately thanking people who have responded to my questions, and I feel so rude. Sorry about that! I have been using Google Docs intermittently, but I’m not so good at updating.

Hope that the miserable winter is tolerable for everyone today. As terrible as it is, in New York, it still seems better than last year…or is that just me?

    Happy Friday dears!

P.S. My La Fille de Berlin is FINALLY supposed to arrive today….which is good because OH MY GOD I CAN’T WAIT ANY LONGER!

Congratulations on your new bottle of La Fille de Berlin. Such a rich and wonderful perfume. Just last week I stepped into my entry-way after a day at work and wondered what the fabulous rosy smell was. Turns out it was a trace of La Fille lingering on a scarf I had worn the day before (the scarf was hanging on the coatrack). My entry smelled like roses and musk for days!

Isn’t it a good one? It was supposed to arrive last week, My skin eats scent half the time, so spraying a scarf has been one of my primary modes of experiencing scent this winter. Such a nice little treat to get wafts of it when you pick it up again.

It was supposed to be last week, and now the Post Office website says it was delivered here (I have everything delivered to my office), but it definitely was not…..

SOTD = Aftelier Cuir de Gardenia

I am not wearing it yet but will do so in a bit. I have tried several Aftelier perfumes (Secret Garden, Parfum Prive and Palimpsest) and have other ones in my samples stash and unfortunately all of these turned unbearably animalic on me or otherwise remained “flat”. Cuir de Gardenia is also animalic but something about the consistency of the perfume and the brightness of the tiare made it a stunning, close to skin fragrance.

I will continue to explore the Aftelier line ( hello Mount Sample). Ms. Aftel makes samples accessible at a very reasonable price; her customer service is also a shining example of how to do things right!

Hello dear! Kafka had a wonderful interview with Ms. Aftel. She recommended “Fragrant” and “Essence & Alchemy”. Since I recently offloaded 400+ books from my collection to the local library, acquiring two books will be my reward 🙂

I had the same problem with Palimpsest… just too feral for me… but I am still on and off with Lumiere, which is not animalic… at its best it smells like white petals crushed between fingers in a good way… other times there are a few bruised petals in the mix and while still interesting to smell, for the price I hesitate to wear it as a fragrance. I also wear her Wild Roses, which is unlike most of her fragrances…but a cousin to her patchouli spice body oil. I like it a lot, but I like patchouli….weirdly, I get a hit of cake frosting from Wild Roses at the start.

Check the note lists on her website. I have learned that I have to avoid anything of hers with ambergris — it just explodes off my skin, most unpleasantly.

I like her Oud Luban though… no ambergris.

Funny you should mention ‘Palimpsest.’. I’d never heard of this word until I read Angela’s review of the Aftelier scent here on NST. Just this morning I actually ‘read’ this word in the current book I’m reading – wonder if that will ever happen again? I wouldn’t have known what it meant if I hadn’t read about the perfume!

Ha! My equivalent word experience was “Chiaroscuro”. I read Jessica’s review of the Roxanna Illuminated perfume and soon thereafter, saw it on a museum artwork label describing a painting in the hall across from the Edgar Allan Poe “Terror of the Soul” special exhibit at the Morgan Library.

Carven Le Parfum is so nice! It’s one of those that just makes me happy when I wear it. Unfortunately it’s too cold here today to wear anything light floral.

I had expected to love Ma Griffe, but it was really awful on my skin. Am not a big fan of vetiver so I doubt I’d like that one, and the one bit of Vert et Blanc I tried had surely aged badly (it’s discontinued in any case). Didn’t like Madame Carven either. So Le Parfum might be my OHW from this house.

Never tried Ma Griffe–are you speaking of vintage or the new version? I tend to like greens, but too much vetiver can be problematic.

I could have gone with Gucci (own the 2002 Eau de Parfum and love it; have tried Rush, Guilty and the *other* EDP and didn’t care for any of them), but went with Carthusia Mediterraneo instead. I smell lemony fresh! I’m too new at perfumistahood to really be able to declare that I won’t find another fragrance to love from either of those houses, but this is a snapshot in time, right?

This may be cheating, but here goes: there are actually two Tom Ford scents that I like, but today I’m in Black Orchid, the only one of his that I’ve ever liked enough to buy. Tobacco Vanille is very nice but absolutely not worth $215 for a 50-mL bottle. Black Orchid, though? Intoxicating ink-dark flowers on a bed of the most glorious vanilla? Worth every penny.

It’s funny how much better Black Orchid seems to smell on men, in my opinion. It’s mushroomy and dank on me, and I can’t manage the cocoa powder stuff either, but I’ve smelled it on two different guys, and it was almost intoxicating.

(I do love the Voile de Fleur version, though.)

I was thinking of wearing Christopher Street today because it’s the closest thing I have to one-hit-wonder. For a couple years it was the only fragrance by Charendon Macerations but now they have another one, although I’ve not tried it yet.
However, it was way too utterly bitterly cold this morning for such a chill fragrance as that. It was 3 F with a windchill of -16 this morning. NO THANK YOU.

So I threw on Samsara to be wrapped in warm comforting sandalwood.

I kinda had a hard time picking one for today, since I don’t have that many lines where I know I only like one. I had a few where I didn’t feel I had tried enough to say. I went with Gucci Rush today because I do like and own a bottle of this one, and I haven’t been impressed with the others I’ve tried (though I’ve heard good things about L’Arte de Gucci, I haven’t tried it).

This gives me hope for Heliotrope Blanc, as I think we have some tastes in common. Of the original 7 Orizas, five of them were utter and complete scrubbers (in particular, Horizon and everybody’s darling, Chypre Mousse). I liked Reve d’Ossian and Relique d’Amour but wouldn’t bother to buy them.

I just got my LuckyScent order yesterday, which contains samples of HB, Marrion-Nous and Muguet Fleuri. We’ll just have to see how it goes… sometimes I think there are commonalities among a brand’s fragrances that just don’t mesh well with my preferences or my skin, and Oriza might be one of those brands I don’t have an affinity for.

Marrion-Nous is great for me (I couldn’t take Jardins d’Armide) so I guess that is my one hit wonder, but I am very interested to smell the Muguet Fleuri, and also their carnation ones, they have two, that are both from old recipes, especially Royal Oeillet, because I love the pretty label on the bottle. I will be interested to read what you think of Marrion-Nous and Meguet Fleuri…

The Jardins was very soapy/powdery in an unpleasant way, to my nose. I often do all right with powdery scents, but it depends on where the powder is coming from. I disliked both Jardins and Oeillet Louis XV.

Wasn’t wild about either Marions-Nous–very soapy opening, and Muguet Fleuri was too intense for me. I like the muguet in PdN Odalisque and another one I can’t think of at the moment.

I don’t think the line is available anywhere in Canada: even The Perfume Shoppe doesn’t have it, which surprises me. But you can get samples from Luckyscent: I’ve dealt with them many times with never a problem.

I wish I’d thought of Idole! I picked Antonio Visconti Alhambra. I don’t think this line is even available in the U.S.–I got this one when I ordered some samples a while back from First in Fragrance, and I think there are a lot of different perfumes but this is the only one I’ve tried. It’s a heavy, spicy, resiny scent with benzoin and opoponax and patchouli–nice on a very cold day, but it would probably suffocate me in the summer.

I thought about Bvlgari Black, as it’s the only one I really like from the house. Unfortunately, my mini bottle has gone dry. Could have gone with Gres Cabaret, or Givenchy Organza Indecence, or Oscar de la Renta Esprit d’Oscar… or Tommy Girl. Or Versace Blonde.

I finally decided on Escada Margaretha Ley, that BWF bomb that seems to be the only Escada not too sweet for my tastes. It *is* sweet, actually, but in that white-flowers way instead of a sugary one. There’s coconut in it too, so between the flowers and the coconut it’s standing up to our sub-zero temps very well.

This has been a fun challenge!

I’m wearing Caldey Island Lavender today – a lovely lavender oil. This is the one so highly ranked by Luca Turin in the Guide, he gives it 5 stars and calls it “simply the best lavender soliflore on earth”. Had to have it after reading that, lol. And yes, it is wonderful (but I don’t know if I would go so far as to call it the best on earth…)

I thought about wearing Lolita Lempicka, but I didn’t feel like anise today. I thought about Prescriptives Calyx, but it felt too summery. I ended up layering Origins Ginger Essence and Philosophy’s Pure Honey. It worked surprisingly well. I used to have Spring Fever by Origins, but I’ve lost it. And I’ve never even smelled another Philosophy scent. I think that I just didn’t get the theme at all. Oh well, I smell good.

I’ve smelled almost all of Philosophy’s fragrances – used to really love them – but I’ve given up on them since the company was sold and the perfumes have gone downhill. Sadly even the better original formulas have been changed. The original Amazing Grace was a really lovely floral musk with a tomato leaf note that was different and refreshing. Doesn’t quite smell the same now. I still have some backup bottles of Amazing Grace and Falling in Love (a vanilla blackberry thing that my beloved, stereotypically for men, does not object to. And which is sometimes cozy on cold days.)

      Calyx – that’s a wonderful choice too!

I’m in Le Labo Gaiac 10. I was in a state this morning and had a little trouble figuring out this assignment, so the choice was a default – it’s the only fragrance I like by the brand because it’s the only fragrance I’ve smelled from the brand.

It’s a fun, realistic wood, but it seems really simple (especially for the price). Though when I looked it up on fragrantica this morning and saw musk listed as the dominant note I freaked out a bit and thought perhaps I’m not experiencing the full scent (I’m anosmic to musk). One of my fragrance fears is that I will wear what I deem an “office friendly” scent, only to learn that everyone around me thinks “sex bomb.” I walked straight into my husband’s office and made him give a determination – not an inappropriately sexy musk, so phew! (he’s not anosmic; yes, we work in the same building; yes, it’s kinda weird).

You’re safe! Gaiac 10 is subtle woods and musks, not a skankfest that your nose skips. I’ll give it the HS Office Stamp. Hope your day goes well.

I lived in Japan for a while. Your worry about Gaiac 10 made me think about those days. Perfume was such a big no there, in the tiny town where I lived. Big smells did not go over well. I only wore fragrance on my days off. I’d be so curious to hear about that Le Labo’s Tokyo Patchouli 24 sales stats 😉 It might be surprising. Be well!

Much of the Smell Bent line relies heavily on musk, especially the “Sunset People” releases. So for a few of them, I thought I smelled like orange blossoms or citrus or something fun, and it turns out I completely missed the main event.

Leave if to me to misread a perfume called “Walk of Shame”…

Yeah, that Smell Bent musk is… um… well. I tend to find the Smell Bents a little on the raunchy side, except for One (oh hey, another OHW I could have chosen).

I once ordered a sample of Commando after reading a post from Tom at PST calling it “the smell of freshly-washed baby,” and saying it smelled like skin, only better.

If they say “wow that’s a nice scent”, I don’t care how many “quotation” marks they intend, I’m going to take them at their word. 🙂

If they say “Oh, is that scent yours?” or “That makes quite an impression” or even just “Huh,” I’ll get that perhaps it needs to be reigned in. 🙂

(This as someone who probably wears less perfume than most of us – it’s rare I wear more than two sprays of anything. Some things are powerhouses even at 2 sprays, though. Rubj comes to mind – but I got nothing but compliments. Real ones. “What smells so good in here?” was one. 🙂 )

I thought about Carner Barcelona D600 or Chopard Casmir for today but instead went with Teo Cabanel’s Alahine. I was surprised to see that I don’t have very many perfume line “orphans,” it appears that if one works for me I tend to have good luck with others from the same house. Hence multiples from Guerlain, Malle, Nicolai, and SL.

AP was perfect for this extremely cold day in Virginia. I don’t have a pink/Barbie personality at all, but am a total sucker for metal bottles! One of my earliest loves was Charles of the Ritz Light Perfume in the silver canister with burgundy accents…

I understand the metal bottle love! I am still hoping to find a Montale to love because of the bottle! Crazy but true- there is something about those dispensers that I find very futuristic and architectural and I need one (No, I really don’t)!

I did become very smitten with Sweet Oriental Dream but I would only be able to wear it rarely because it’s so DENSE! It really flips my switch, but only in very cold weather.

I forgot about the community project. Got up and immediately sprayed on Byredo 1996, which I’m kind of addicted to lately. It still works with the theme, however. I’ve tried many–not all–of the Byredo line and was ready to write it off until a decant of 1996 fell into my hands. Otherwise, I would have chosen Bulgari Black for today.

I wanted to participate in this but this morning we had no water at home. The -35C temperature outside is causing water mains and water pipes to burst everywhere in the city. So SOTH is the same Silences de Jacomo that I wore to bed last night.

I had Idole the Lubin (EdT) on my to-buy list for too long and when I finally decided to buy it, this gorgeous bottle was gone. I tried the EdP version and I don’t like it as much, plus- I might be alone in this- I find that the new bottle looks just horrible!

I have never bought a perfume just because of the bottle, but a tacky or ugly bottle has stopped me from buying things I didn’t totally love. Actually, come to think of it, kitschy bottles have stopped me from really trying some perfumes – lids with big bows and ballerina skirts, little plastic “charms” hanging there, bottles molded like torsos…ugh.

Although I haven’t tried all of Cartier’s scents, of the ones I’ve tried the only one I love and own is Le Baiser du Dragon, so that is my choice for today. I’m wearing the body creme, which I totally fell in love with when I first tried it and is my favorite form of the scent. Will touch up later with the parfum.

Le Baiser won out over Barbara Bui today because spring training started this week and I’m reminded that I always wear Le Baiser to the opening day game in April; I can be generous in applying and its wonderful complexity has room to breathe – and waft – in the usually-still-cold open air. Here’s to spring and baseball!

At the ballpark, they sell bags with several layers of colors — pink, blue, and purple. The perfume smells like the pink cotton candy. Eating that messy stuff at games always makes us giggle a bit. Other ballpark snacks: peanuts (of course!) and my husband gets cups of chocolate malt ice cream that come with little wooden spoons.

It’s certainly not a ‘wonder’ in my mind, but I like it and enjoy wearing it, and I can’t think of another CK that I would want to wear. And, it also felt like a good pick for today: enough substance to redirect my attention after a tricky morning getting kids ready for preschool….

Instead, I’m wearing Ro’s Argan body conditioner and added some of the Pearl massage for extra fragrance/moisture because my skin’s been soooo dry in this cold weather. Just topped it off with Rose Musc and wow, layered with the Rose Jam, I’m getting a lot more musk than usual. Enjoying Rose Musc more and more every time I wear it.

Theo Fennell Scent. I can never decide if I really like it. It has an odd way of changing from sniff to sniff. Perhaps I like it, actually, but I can’t smell it without thinking I would like it better if it were just slightly more x or less y.

I was interested to see that it was composed by Christian Laudamiel. The only other scent I have by CL is S-ex, which is a very weird perfume, and Scent is weird in its own way.

My SOTD happened by accident today. I actually had outpatient surgery this morning and of course couldn’t wear perfume. I had worn a sweater that was sprayed a few days ago with Chloe eau de Parfum. It was still very noticeable because the nurses told me how good I smelled. I had to reassure them that it was on my sweater and not me.
Even though this wasn’t “supposed” to be my one-hit-wonder, it actually is. I adore the original Chloe from the 80’s, but have an appreciation for the new, reformulated one. I don’t like any of the flankers that have come about such as Chloe See and Chloe Love Story, etc… just the plain, simple Chloe.

My unsolicited opinion is that (most) people like that are nut jobs. Seriously. And to be clear, I don’t have anything against nut jobs, because I’m one too, and proud of it 😉

I worked in a cubicle situation for a while (I felt like an animal in the zoo! No more cubicles for me!) and the person in the next cubicle complained about everyone’s perfume with a lot of associated drama (She said she had allergies and asthma, gasping and wheezing, hand to throat, choking, saying she couldn’t breathe -but was still talking!) yet she came in every morning and literally hosed down her cubicle with aerosol Lysol Spring Fresh Scent!

I detect some underlying pathology, Sherlock! It was my daily entertainment! lol!

I had a hard time with this one because I like multiple scents from most brands. But I decided upon Balmain Ambre Gris, and it’s been a great companion to my crazy Friday. I suppose I should try the newset formulation of Ivoire, but the original version does very little for me. Also, Vent Vert and Jolie Madame were almost right but just not. Wore “With Love” by Hilary Duff earlier today to sync. I had the second one” Wrapped With Love “at one point , but I didn’t like it and passed it on . As far as I know Ms. Duff only has two scents in her line. I only like..no love one of them. By the way -to sync with another theme(BN) I overlayered Pure Malt over With Love after I’d worn the first scent for about 4-5 hours. Very good combination ! Mmmmm…..!!!

I found a real one “hit” wonder at bedtime. Danielle by Danielle Steel, which I think I was one of the few who actually liked. So much so I’m on my second 100ml bottle and picked up a bottle of the extrait off Evilbay for around $22. It is pretty, sultry and just a perfect bedtime perfume. I never got any of the unpleasant notes (some noticed something like a subtle beer/hopps note), just a spicy, musky floral that’s really nice. I’ve never read the author, but really like the fragrance a great deal, as well as the minimalist bottle.
