Wednesday scent of the day 12/3

Posted by Robin on 3 December 2014 144 Comments

loccitane

Happy Wednesday! What is your fragrance today?

I'm wearing L'Occitane Vanille & Narcisse, my favorite of the La Collection de Grasse scents I've been able to try (I never did come across Rose & Osmanthus).

Reminder: this Friday, 12/5, is Friday At The Mall: wear something from a mall chain (Lush, The Body Shop, Victoria's Secret, L'Occitane, etc & etc).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

      Elisa,

We are scent twins today! It usually lasts all day on me. But then again, I am heavy-handed when it comes to fragrances. 🙂

Started by sampling Yesterday Haze which I decided isn’t really me so I’m now in Jardins d’Armide which is one of my faves.

Yesterday Haze is really well done but perfumes usually don’t grow on me– if it doesn’t grab me in the first hour then I’m not going to buy it or even retry it as I have hundreds of other scents to try (literally)

If I hate something the first time I wear it on my skin, I probably won’t have the discipline to re-visit it. And, yeah, I know that there is a big difference between something not grabbing you and hating something 🙂

I really like Yesterday Haze, it’s currently number two on my buy list but that list just sits and collects dust most of the time.

My ranking shifts around but some things sit there for years and others hardly at all. The suspicion that Byredo Green is slipping into discontinuation prompted a buy ahead of my current number one. (The much newer Desarmant)

I am plowing through my sample of Jardins d’Armide at a rapid rate and I like it more each time! I will probably ask for this for my birthday, since I have other items already out there for Christmas. Today is Bois d’Iris. I am on an Iris kick right now….

Angela recently commented that a moment of perfume instant love is like a “sucker punch.” I love it when that happens.

I would love to hear more from anyone about Jardins d’Armide. Is the orange blossom prominent? How about the carnation? I recently overdid orange blossom trying BV Knot. It was just a “no” for me. I love carnation, though, so am tempted to sample Jd’A. It sounds lovely.

Sniffing my way through my Kerosene samples. Today, the eye opening Black Vines, gee, I am not sleepy anymore! Necco wafers and Red Hots in that opening! It settles nicely into licorice with some milky fig and ivy riding a wave of soft, not treacly, vanilla. I think all these perfumes are fascinating, strange and beautiful. I particularly like Dirty Flower Factory, a white floral like no other! Continuing in the Christmas tradition at my house, my husband gives me a bottle of niche every year as a gift, I just have to pick one!

Thanks for the reminder that my Kerosene samples have been neglected. I decided Black Vines was perfect for this dreary day with fix-it folks in my house. Such a weird scent. On me it morphs between a candy melange and citrus rind but it certainly perks me up! Goes well with the cardboard boxes and newspaper thing I have going here in the kitchen.

After being rather “meh” about Opus vi yesterday morning, midway through the day I realized I smelled something gorgeous and it was coming from me. So I’m wearing it again today, paying attention more to the notes now and unfortunately the opening is still very “meh”. Indolic and rather powdery, which is fine, but…. meh. Waiting for the lovely incense and amber to kick in.

Today it’s Coromandel. And, wow! I think this might be my gateway drug to Chanel fragrance!!!! Sniffing it in the bottle, I wasn’t even sure I’d bother trying it (got a free sample from a generous NST-er, THANK YOU). But decided to be brave. After starting as a strong patchouli, then going quickly to the toned-down-for-super-rich-people version of Angel, it has now mellowed after a couple of hours. Still going strong, but a little quieter, all the edges have rounded out. It’s lovely. I’m shocked. Very happy too.

I agree on the fleeting. 28 La Pausa is like heaven washing over me, but then it disappears after a few hours, breaking my heart. I might still buy it, and just prepare for the bottle to run dry too soon.

Yes – Coromandel is Angel-ish. Definitely in the family. It is the longest lasting of all the Les Exclusifs. If you are looking for a smell-alike until you get a bottle of Coromandel, I think that the Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights is a dead ringer for it.

I’m home today with a cold (one of my boys is also sick and missing school), and wanted something warm, rich and sweet so went with my Hermes Elixir des Merveilles sample. I like it! I smell mostly chocolate and bitter orange (lucky my nose is still working, though I do have a sore throat and slight fever). Maybe FB or at least decant worthy. The original Merveilles is already on my wish list, and I like the Amber one too. Nice family of perfumes!

I had a small sample of the original Merveilles, which I quickly used up this summer. Love. It feels like something that develops from the inside, rather than something external that is applied. I’ve tried the Amber one a few times, and while I really like it, I don’t get the same feeling of it being inherent, if only temporarily. If that makes sense.

Today, I am trying my mini of Perles de Lalique. I came into work after a week off and there it was, along with Youth Dew Amber Nude. i really like the combination of rose and patchouli, but I think I need a spray bottle, rather than a splash mini. The sillage seems to be a little minimal, and I like my scents to be a little more out there. Thanks to the commenter who recommended this one as another rose to try. I had never heard of it, and even with the minimal sillage I think that it is FB worthy. I also just want to say how much reading NST and the many comments that are generated have helped in my exploration of fragrance. Thank you all for being such a great and helping community.

Do you have any decanting supplies? Maybe get an inexpensive plastic or glass atomizer to try spraying. Accessories for Fragrance (ebay seller) is a good place to start as you don’t have to buy a ton – you can just get 1 or 2.

Full-size bottles seem to abound at the discount retailers, if you want an instigator 😉 I worried for a bit that this was too similar to Marni, but I’m glad I own both 🙂

Went for 3 sprays (plus a half spray) of Bvlgari Black this morning. How is that rubber scent so comforting? I would have never guessed.

More than my usual work scent ration, but, as they say, it is what it is!

Black always makes me think of bicycle tires. Or new sneakers, when I was a kid. I tend to find it comforting too.

Scent twins! I gassed myself with 7 sprays from a 10 mL atomizer. The 7 sprays is probably the equivalent of 4 sprays from the FB. I love it!

I just fell over this one. It is just about perfect. I only wish it had a tiny bit more sillage. It has remarkable lasting power on me though, esp. if I get some in my hair. Very gorgeous.

This may be the Dior that I finally buy. I love this milk and honey and incense thing that Annick Menardo has made. Again, the bottle is really huge. I agree a split would be a great idea. I’ve burned through a 5mL and and most of an 8mL decant. By my rules, I can buy FB now 😀 (It’s on the long list)

Passage d’Enfer today, because I had an appointment this morning and thought it would be polite to wear something quiet. Unfortunately, because I used my sample vial instead of the spray bottle, it’s basically gone. I may need to go find something at the mall to sample because I feel unfinished without fragrance.

I’m wearing VCA Bois d’Iris from the last nst swap fest all by myself in the studio today. But what I really want to do is shop for vintage clothing. I just saw a documentary called “Advanced Fashion” on Netflix last night. it’s about a group of older ladies in New York who dress themselves in astonishing and beautifully eccentric clothing, hats, jewellery, gloves, the whole nine yards. Very uplifting and creatively inspiring.

I didn’t get any perfumes on cyber Monday after all. I recognised I was having a deal induced psychotic perfume spasm and not thinking straight. So I turned off the computer.

Ugh, I had a panic mode must-get-now reaction after work and before I went out for the night. I bought Journey Woman and Antonio Alessandria Nuit Rouge. (And then I was doubly bad and bought Cuir de Russie last night – just because.)

Yup me too. But I appeased my inner fume ghoul by ordering a discounted jar of vanilla patchouli lavender salt scrub and matching soap from Sabon last night. $31 is a lot less guilt provoking than the $150 -$200 I was about to lay out for a discounted Amouage. Which I’m also regretting and very relieved I didn’t buy… GAK!

I hope you love what you got regardless. Perfume is not about practical need anyway. But as a person raised by depression era parents ( speaking for myself here) I always have some sort of buyers remorse about what I consider “non essential” purchases which applies to everything that is not food or shelter…
I absolutely love Heeley Cardinal. You smell sublime!

Samples arrived today, so I’m wearing Musc Ravageur. Might as well get addicted to the current FM scents right before selling the company results in changed formulas, right? 😀 I only went for a 2ml spray but I might go back for a 5 or 8ml spray if there’s a good sale on samples. The prices seem craaaazy till I think about a FB and what I would have to pay to have it shipped to Canada.

I am trying to narrow my focus on samples so I can spring for 2 or 5ml sizes (without any real intention of buying FBs unless there is true love) rather than the smaller dabber sizes. I have definitely hit the point where I have so many full bottles I’m getting nervous about them turning before I can wear them very often.

My SOTD is Golden Cattleya by Olympic Orchids.

I liked the narcissus and vanilla combination in Vanille & Narcisse, but unfortunately for me, it is really heavy on the amber note from L’Occitane’s pomander, which I don’t like 🙁

Golden Cattleya was SUPER sweet on me. I usually have pretty good tolerance for “sweet’ in terms of florals, but this one is just Too Much. Oh well. Ballets Rouges is terrific.

The first 10 minutes are super sweet on me, but then the sweetness backs way off. I LOVE those first 10 minutes, but I would not be able to take it if the super sweetness lasted much longer.

I also love the intense sweetness of the first 10 minutes of Bubblegum Chic, but I am glad that it doesn’t last much longer.

How crazy is it that I have a sample and have tried Eau Lente, but have never had Womanity on skin? I’m shaking my head at my perfume silliness. I really need to pop in a department store and try it. TM fragrances are not boring, and Womanity has generated some polarizing reactions. Sounds fun, and as an added bonus, if I love it, it’s not ridiculously priced. Hmmmm. A perfume pilgrimage for the weekend is born. Thanks!

SOTD is Agent Provocateur L’Agent for the second day in a row. I ran out of my usual lotion (Shea Moisture Argan & Shea Frankincense & Myrrh) and the store was also out, so I got their Coconut & Hibiscus instead, thinking, I like coconut, and our hibiscus doesn’t have much smell. I’d recommend the SM C&H to anyone looking for a fruity-floral lotion. It’s too much for me, but the L’Agent holds its own against it, with its smoky incense, without actually clashing. L’Agent would have been a good choice for last Friday, too–it’s about $30 at the discounters. I may just need to read last Friday’s post now, instead of working my way back to it.
