Wednesday scent of the day 11/26

Posted by Robin on 26 November 2014 76 Comments

Kate Moss for Stella McCartney

What's your fragrance today?

I am 99% recovered from my brief illness, so I'm in fragrance again. Today I'm wearing a dab of Stella McCartney L.I.L.Y. I really like this one but I don't think it took off, did it? I never hear it mentioned.

Reminder: this Friday, 11/28 (Black Friday!) will be Cheap Thrills Friday. Wear something that costs $50 or below, double bonus points if it costs $25 or below. No points for wearing something expensive that you bought cheaply via a sample or decant or somesuch! We're trying to find real bargains here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

There is almost no one in my office today, so I figured I could try out something that I wasn’t so sure about, and it wouldn’t matter whose nose knew it. MPG’s Cuir Fetiche today, and I rather like it. It’s good in this cold rainy weather. And it is not nearly as big a scent as I anticipated with a name like Cuir Fetiche.

I’m wearing El Attarine today, courtesy of the kind Morgana. I love it. It’s perfect for the season. Doubly so as this year my family is skipping the home cooking and going out for Indian food. Yum.

Today is bright and sunny and gorgeous, and I don’t have to work! We usually work until midday but the Doc is out and the new girl and the hygienist can handle the five patients without me so I’m cuddling the cat and sipping tea. I kind of wish the entire neighborhood hadn’t decided to mow lawns this morning.
My allergies are acting up again so I just have a bit of massage oil (frankincense, rose, and cedar wood) rubbed on my arms. I really wish I had written the recipe down when I mixed this one. I was trying to imitate the scent of one of my favorite body balms that has been discontinued and I did a great job.
I’ll probably go with something light and easy again today for real perfume but I haven’t decided yet. Good thing the comfy furniture is gone, I’m sorely tempted to lay on the couch and be a bum. Maybe I’ll join the lawn mowing brigade. The General down the street would appreciate it I know. My eclectic plantings and scruffy lawn must make him positively twitch.
Robin, glad you’re feeling better. I bet I’ll forget to participate Friday as I’ve already lost track of the days. I never sniffed L.I.L.Y. because I just assumed it was blah since it was never mentioned. Odd really, I love Stella.

I got all excited when my next door neighbor started his mower but so far, it is just sitting there running. We’re on hour two of this so far. I assume there is a reason…maybe he’s trying to run old gas through? Otherwise, he e is the best neighbor ever and always mows for the elderly man on the other side of him, but I usually give up and mow his weeds down along my fence because he Just doesn’t care about his yard.
Oh, and the man who blows off his roof every morning is doing an extra thorough job today too. Nice quiet morning it ain’t.

Hi Relleric! No problem with replying instead of hitting a new comment.
I really like Intoxicated, on me it smells like a sweet and milky coffee with warm spices, like those limited Christmas coffees they serve in shops! Light my Fire is beautiful and rich tobacco, too bad that on my skin it quickly becomes weak – Diptyque Volutes or Phaedon Tabac Rouge perform much better.
When it comes to Smoke for the Soul – this is my least favorite one, smells like weed… literally.

I’m not fond of Smoke for the Soul either, but I should probably wait to judge it until after wearing it.
I’ve never tried the Diptyque nor the Phaedon, heard great things about both of them.

I remember being really excited for LILY because it had truffle, and I’d never encountered truffle in a fragrance before. When I finally smelled it, I remembering finding it pretty, but didn’t quite understand it (not mushroomy enough, I guess). Now that I’ve smelled other scents with truffle, though, LILY would probably make more sense to me.

I’m wearing Cuir de Russie, and have gotten through the stage I don’t totally like and to the stage I love. Great for a quiet, snowy day at the office.

Yes! I’m just going to Mom’s and I love all my family but there will still be too many people and I’ll have to either sleep in Mom’s room (she snores like a freight train) on the floor, or on a cot in the garage (yick). This is one of the few times I’m envious of my husband’s bad back which guarantees him the comfy sofa.
I’m taking lots of samples since I’m not sure what I’ll be in the mood for. All of my naturals will be accompanying me since I usually find them calming, as well as my musk heavy stuff and some sheer pretty ones (Wit, in particular, is usually a winner and Amaranthine). You can always wear a good dose of MKK as relative repellent or go with No. 5 or whichever Chanel works as armor for you (most people seem to have one).
      Good luck with your visiting!

Wearing Malle’s Iris Poudre today as we’re getting some simple but special dishes pre-prepared for our small but very thankful holiday tomorrow.

6 inches of lovely white snow is helping the mood. Hope all who are going ‘over the river and through the woods’ tomorrow will do it safely and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

We had snow for a while, but it was a few degrees two warm for anything to stick. Just as well for travelers, but very dreary. I happened to notice TDC De Bachmakov today and thought, “Why not?” As Robin’s 2010 NST review noted, “It is supposed to evoke the winds of Asia and the sun hitting the forests of Siberia and buds pushing through the snow in the spring.” I remember thinking it smelled exceptionally chilly when I first tried it, but I don’t get that anymore. It’s also a bit spicy: those winds must have passed over the Silk Road, too. Primarily citrus, floral and sap, it doesn’t sound like a fall fragrance, but the underlying spice-wood-chalk notes spin a more veil of scent. Although it seems delicate, it stands up to the dry air of artificial heat. Highly successful impulse buy of a heavily discounted bottle. 🙂

I actually gave another sniff to both Stella and L.I.L.Y when I was in Sephora the other day. I never cared for lily all that much – well made but lily of the valley has never been my favorite note. More tragic still, I think Stella’s been reformulated. I’ll have to dig out my sample to confirm, but they changed the bottle too, so… 🙁

No SOTD yet, I’m going to the mall later and will undoubtedly sample something while I’m there.

WFH 1/2 day for me. Just finished up my reports. It’s cold and wet here. We had some snow earlier and the loudest thundersnow I’d ever heard! I even saw the flash from the lightning outside my window. Hopefully the majority of the snow stays away so the fiance and I can get to his parent’s house for t-giving tomorrow.

Wearing Opus I today. Kinda wishing I’d put on something else though. It’s not really doing it for me with this kind of weather. I need something a bit more cozy.

Today I’m just wearing a dab of Divine L’Homme Sage on a wrist and reminding myself why Mr. Ab. Scent is getting another 100ml bottle under the tree. We simply can’t be without this stuff. Which reminds me that it looks as if Lucky Scent is phasing out the Divine fragrances. I’ve always ordered directly from Divine anyway since the prices are so much better and their customer service is fantastic, but that’s too bad about LS for sampling purposes.

Robin, I saw L.I.L.Y. on Sephora a few days back when I was using their fragrance IQ feature and was tempted to pick up a rollerball. It does sound pretty nice and a bit unusual. Do you think it’s worth a cheap thrills blind buy?

What is euphemistically called “snowy mix” here in the Northeast USA is making for a very miserable travel day. I only had to go to the eye doctor, but feel for those who are traveling further to be with friends and family for Thanksgiving.
