Wednesday scent of the day 11/19

Posted by Robin on 19 November 2014 145 Comments

Sarah Jessica Parker

What's your fragrance today?

While typing up this morning's celebrity perfume post (who ARE all those people?) I put on Sarah Jessica Parket Covet.

Reminder: this Friday, 11/21, is Unsniffed Friday: wear a perfume you bought before you'd smelled it, and tell us how it worked out for you. If you've never bought anything unsniffed, congratulations, and do chime in with your scent of the day anyway.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Coco. The power went out overnight and our heat is electric so I woke up freeeeeeezing, and went for every warm thing I could find.

I’m wearing Byredo 1996. I’m back in the world of the scented after a few days visiting my mom (who can’t stand people around her wearing perfume or any scented products) and then getting a cold when I came back so I basically couldn’t smell anything.

I just read that Mandy Aftel is discontinuing two of her perfumes, Shiso and Tango, which has been on my to-buy list for years, so I finally ordered a bottle of the EdP last night.

Full on brag: Got an notice yesterday that Mandy Aftel is opening up her studio for a three day open house and sale in early December. I’m in… wait for it… Oakland, which is a ten minute drive to Aftel central in Berkeley… “I’m so excited, I just can’t hide it… and I’m about to lose control and I think I like it!” (Thank you Pointer Sisters!)

Oh.. that’s good to know.. I just ordered samples of Shiso and Tango yesterday. I had tried Tango a couple of years ago, and didn’t like it, but that was very early in my perfumista-hood. Just watch now I’ll love it. I was disappointed to see that Haute Claire is gone. I really liked that one.

My mom’s the same way with perfumes..she is like a bloodhound and woe to the person within her “smell sphere” wearing perfume. Bvlgari Black and Cuir Beluga are “safe” perfumes as she had never complained about either one.

Coromandel. Curiously, it smells great (full and rich) on my right wrist and only pretty good (drier) on my left wrist.

I think sometimes this happens because I’ve got leftover perfume (from yesterday) under the new perfume on one side boosting it up.

This might be far-fetched, but I wondered if it had to do with being right handed and the fact that my wrist is always touching something, either when I’m writing or using a mouse (though you’d think that would actually be bad for the fragrance). I notice it in a lot of my fragrances, but haven’t gone so far as to see whether there’s a difference on days when I’m not at work.
Maybe I should test out your theory by wearing the same fragrance a few days in a row.

Oh yes they could be evaporating at different rates for that reason. I wear perfume on the top on my wrist instead of the inside so it doesn’t rub off on stuff, but if the rubbing off makes it smell better I guess you wouldn’t want to do that!

Oooh, love Coromandel! I think you may be right about the scent coming off one wrist depending on if you’re left/right handed. I notice that a lot with my right wrist b/c it’s on my desk (using mouse) all day. My left wrist usually has scent last much longer on it.

Indecisive and tired this morning, so went with Organza, which was a good choice as it kept me awake.

Bedtime now and in JHAG Midnight Oud. Great bedtime fragrance!

Also- for all Mary Greenwell Plum fans finding it hard to get, I noticed Strawberrynet has some… Lemon too.

SOTD is Lancome Mille et Une Roses. Bought unsniffed, as part of a la collection 15 mL coffret set (also with Sikkim, Climat, and Maige). This is the first time I am wearing it, and Mille et Une Roses is so beautiful I almost can’t stand it! It is neither dark nor light. It is between photo realistic and abstract. It does not lean sharp or excessively powdery.

Mille is a very beautiful rose. One of the earliest acquisitions once I got more seriously interested in perfume. I dithered over buying the coffret too long and never got one. I would love a mini of Climat as it is the greenest of the lot, and I love green perfumes.

Lots of us in Chanel so far — I’m trying Beige, which kind of smells like a department store flanker somehow. A honeyed up version of Be Delicious, maybe? Or Diet Love, Chloe?

      I love Beige-
      That was my wedding scent.
I don’t really like strong floral/honey smells, but Beige seems to work with my chemistry. Another honey perfume I use to own is by Sisley-sheesh..I can’t remember the name. Also a lot of honey and florals and I passed that FB on someone who could use it.

I found the florals a little sharp at first but the honey in the heart notes is very nice.

By the way, I really love the Honeymania body butter from the Body Shop — it doesn’t smell like honey exactly, but it’s really nice.

I second the Honeymania body butter.

Have you smelled the Laura Mercier golden honey musk? I guess there is a holiday set with some body butter and honey bath. It smells sooo good! Very honey scented.

I really enjoyed my sample of Beige – but I doubt I’ll ever buy any at Chanel prices. I didn’t find it distinctive enough to need, although I would certainly wear the heck out of it if, as Robin says, a bottle dropped from the sky.

SOTD is Union’s Celtic Fire. OMG, IT IS SO GOOD!!!! This is clearly the best possible weather to wear it–freezing cold outside with wind, bundled up to my eyeballs, even though there is some sun. The smoky, boozy elements shine without being as overpowering as they can be in slightly warmer weather. I feel like I have a portable campfire with me. This will be in heavy rotation this winter.

I have on Sage Onyx today.

We had a quick (about 10 seconds) power outage here, too, this morning, and it happened right after I woke up. It was really strange how it was suddenly off and then almost right away everything went back on.

Glad to hear that Strawberry net has Mary Greenwell. Wonder if they will eventually carry the Cherry and Fire, too.

SOTD is L’Artisans Dzing! I love this stuff. I first smelled it in Space NK years ago. I was reaching for the credit card within about 30 seconds of the first sniff…

On the other hand my partner hates it. Says I smell like “an elephants ass” when I wear it (he got hold of the circus inspiration and just ran with it). Doesn’t stop me wearing it though.

I get a lot of large-animal poo out of Dzing! as well – I mean, like dry manure, especially that of an animal that eats largely grass or hay (anything that eats grain has stinkier poo). Surprisingly, my husband the farmer didn’t notice the poo at all. Huh.

Also wearing my jacket that still hangs onto the mix of bvlgari black and vanille insensee I sampled late last week. plus my scarf.

Any ideas on how to manage scent leavings on outerwear? I don’t mind it, but not sure if I need to keep a jacket for vanilla, etc.

Yeah, that is a problem for me in jacket and coat weather. Sometimes, when I have to wear a coat, I apply perfume behind my ears very carefully and let it dry completely. I have a sensitive nose, so I don’t like applying fragrance behind my ears (too close to the nose), but I will on occasion.

I put a drop of PoaL on my wrist once, smeared wrists together, let it dry, put on gloves (that covered my wrists), then put on my wool-blend coat and left the house.

The sleeves of my coat STILL smelled like PoaL three weeks – THREE WEEKS – later, to the point that the pharmacy clerk taking my money for a birthday card complimented me on it.

No scent yet, but I think I’m going to go with Like This from ELdO. Most of the time, I really like the pumpkin note, although very occasionally it doesn’t sit well with me. So, I always have to do a little sniffing at the bottle before applying, to make sure it’s one of the “good days.” Sending all of you east of the Rockies thoughts of fuzzy warmness….or at least a few degrees of less freezing.

Presumptuous of me to assume everyone likes it as much as i do, but HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS EVERYONE! Une Rose de Kandahar just became available on Luckyscent. I sold my unopened lyre bottle of vintage bal a versailles to be able to afford a bottle of RdK. So I was just on the Luckyscent site, getting ready to pull the trigger, and all of a suddent I noticed that they charge $8.95 for shipping. Since when have they been charging for shipping for a $160 item? I thought shipping was free for an order over $70. Have I been living in a cave? Am I just a big fat cheapskate? I’m thinking of just ordering directly from Tauer because his price works out to a bit less even with shipping. Sorry I’m in a bit of a frenzy here. Any thoughts?

The free shipping codes that they include in their Scentletters are only valid for a month. The current one as per last night’s email is Fall14. Like Perthgirl, I live in Australia, so have to factor the shipping charges into the cost of the perfume; I would be in seventh heaven if I only had to pay $8! Having said that, I still ordered a bottle of the Tauer whithin 30 seconds of reading the email. As a side note, I was under the impression that Andy was unable to ship to non-EU countries from his web store, has this problem been resolved?

OH! I got a bottle of this last year and it has become my ALL TIME FAVORITE! LOVE it and so DO NOT REGRET busting the bank for a FB. I got mine through Tauer’s site as I think Lucky Scent is RIDICULOUS with their shipping costs and SLOW shipments. Just my opinion, though.

Enjoy your new bottle when you get it 🙂

I’m trying to keep my head too…I’ve gotten a bit frantic about this one. I wasn’t sure from his blog post the other day if this is only going to be in US only and shipped to stores in Europe with no shipping from his site?
I’m not even sure if I like this better than Une Rose Chypre and I’m losing my marbles because it is limited edition and I’ve been waiting so long for it to be re-released. Eek!

            Hi Gi,
I know I know. It’s stressful! A couple of perfumistas gave me the “scentletter” free shipping code for Luckyscent. It’s Fall14 for the month of November. So, fearful it will sell out, I’m going to go with the evilbad Luckyscent (not really, they’re ok) and order it this morning.

With the dust and workmen going in and out all day, there is no sense in keeping the furnace on, so I am bundled up in my parka (with hood) and wearing Carnal Flower. I sprayed twice down my turtleneck and liberally on both wrists, so I smell pretty nice.

Just decided to boost it with a fresh spritz before I head out to dinner with Mr. Spicebomb, so I’m covered for the next 36 hours!

What are the chances?…I happen to be wearing SJP Lovely today, partly inspired by the upcoming Friday challenge, and also because I’ve been re-watching Sex in the City episodes. Today is the first wearing of Lovely that I’ve enjoyed and am wishing I didn’t give such a tentative spray this morning.

You know the folks in Florida are feeling the cold when you go to your local Publix and they are completely OUT of hot chocolate!

So in honor of the “fridgid” temperature, I went with Musc Ravageur today because this one packs a warm spicy unsweet all encompassing punch!

My flip flops and tank tops seem to be things lost in a dream. It’s so odd to be wearing real shoes and a fleece pull-over. But hey- the sun is SHINING!

I like DTB. It’s freaky mushroomy for quite a while to my nose, which is part of the attraction. There are violets and musk, but later and very subtle. It is not a mainstream scent, and is on my list of FMs to buy as I’m afraid it might disappear. I would be disappointed.

I usually treat myself for Xmas with a few bottles of perfume. Using the samples will hopefully help me decide. Peony is one of my favorite notes, so of course I am loving this fragrance!

I’m just home after a whirlwind tour of Williston, ND, Gillette, WY and Farmington, NM. After sloughing off the field muck, sandblasting my pores with a hot shower and a pulsating shower head, slathering the bod with argan oil, the hands and feet with cornhuskers lotion and the face with moisturizer, I’m starting to feel a bit like a female again. And of course, that requires some scent. I’m wearing Kurdjian’s re-do of Lanvin’s Rumeur. I picked up a small bottle at TJ Maxx for $9.95 on a whim and thought I’d give it a go.

I’ve heard this is a tempermental beast and gives off acetone and alcohol gasses to those it doesn’t like, but on me it’s soft and gentle and purrs like a kitten. Nothing to set the world on fire, but perfectly pleasant for office wear.

I love my job, always have. My industry used to be perilous and injuries and loss of life were common. Any time I can find and correct a safety or quality issue, it’s entirely possible that a life might be saved or a serious injury avoided. I can’t imagine a better ROI than that.

The mystery of Patchouli Antique, part deux:
A few weeks ago, I got a decant of Les Nereides Patchouli Antique from Surrender to Chance. I loved it so much that I had to get a bottle immediately. When I went searching on line, I found that Patchouli Antique is now called Patchouli Precieux. At that point I didn’t know if PA had been reformulated or if just the name had changed. But I loved what I got from Surrender to Chance so much that I found an Italian vendor who seemed to have a boatload of PA for sale. I ordered a big bottle and today it came in the mail. So this afternoon I decided to do a test with the Patchouli Antique from Italy on the left wrist and the Patchouli Antique from the STC decant on the right wrist. And guess what? They are completely different! The PA from Italy is a really, really gorgeous creamy vanilla, honey tobacco creature. In comparison, the decant PA is a much more dirty, almost metallic patch and nowhere near as smooth as the other. I’m wondering if that has to do with different batches or if perhaps the STC was actually Patchouli Precieux after all?

Can’t get food stamps or other emergency funds because I have 7 wks of unemployment backed up but meanwhile unemployment, after a phone interview Fr told me that they needed a letter from my school and then they would make a decision in 5-10 days after they received it ( so it was faxed in Mon). Thankfully, my friends have been giving me money for food and such but NJ services are awful. Of course, I am hopeful that unemployment will pay up soon if that is the reason that emergency services won’t give me money…

Today was another wearing of Jour de Hermes Absolue. I was trying to decide if it will be the version in which I invest (I’m afraid to try the extrait and fall in love with it) rather than the edt and it is so gorgeous. And even with my perfume eating skin, being out in the brisk winter wind and lots of drying car heat, I’ve only had to reapply once after coming back from errands. So the lasting power is impressive on me, even with moderate spraying.

Tomorrow is Mr. Ab. Scent’s birthday and I’m off to go attempt my first Black Forest Cake. I hope it turns out all right! *nervously crossing fingers*
