Monday scent of the day 11/17

Posted by Robin on 17 November 2014 114 Comments

Estée Lauder Sensuous

It's Monday again. And a very dreary Monday in my neck of the woods; hope it's nicer where you are. What's your fragrance today?

I'm wearing Estée Lauder Sensuous.

Reminder: this Friday, 11/21, is Unsniffed Friday: wear a perfume you bought before you'd smelled it, and tell us how it worked out for you. If you've never bought anything unsniffed, congratulations, and do chime in with your scent of the day anyway.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’ve been away for a few days with very little internet access so haven’t been able to comment. Back home again today and my SOTD is Heure Exquise, both the EDP and the body oil.

Up and out the door much earlier than usual. But, not quite really enough to arrive on time. So close. And….Just realized I left my glasses at home. (Can see without them, but it’s not optimal.) So Monday, is that how it’s gonna be?

Wearing Diptyque Eau Duelle edp. And my dry shampoo has a lemony scent. Good combo.

Bahahaha, I couldn’t find my glasses last Sunday when I left for work, so I had to wear my prescription sunglasses inside at work ALL day. It was SO goofy. I felt really cool…NOT!

Transitions are expensive but wonderful. Until I discovered them I was dragging around two sets of coke-bottle lenses and being disoriented when I had to change in public. I didn’t dare take off my sunglasses if I drove into a tunnel.

SOTD is Lalique Encre Noire, my most recent blind buy. I might try to do blind buys all week.

Encre Noire doesn’t last too long on me, so I sprayed very lavishly today. Got more of the vetiver nuttiness this way.

Dreary Monday here too. Trying another sample from Antonio Alessandria – Noir Obscur this time. It’s ok for a leather scent, but fades far too fast. I should’ve gone with something having better longevity.

No SOTD yet- debating on what to wear to my first day of work as a Nordstrom fragrance consultant tomorrow! Any ideas? I was thinking a Jo Malone, since my Nordstrom just started carrying them.

(If anyone was wondering what happened to the perfume store… we’re on schedule to sign a lease on the 24th 🙂 )

Today I’m wearing the Maurice Roucel version of Missoni. Which I bought unsniffed. I bought a mini, but I’m definitely going to buy a bigger bottle. Luckily, Amazon and Ebay both have larger sizes for decent prices. Regarding the Unsniffed Friday challenge – I’m going to be spoiled for choice, since everything that I buy is unsniffed. No where to go to get a sniff of anything, so I depend on buying based on reviews – thank you NST and Bois de Jasmin. Also Lucas Turin. Also, for some reason I have a prejudice about buying samples, so I buy minis when I can. Luckily, there have been very that I’ve gotten that I have disliked. I did buy a full bottle of Cheap and Chic (at mini bottle prices) that smells just like hairspray, but that is the only one I just can’t stand.

Despite 8° temps and snow on the ground, I’m clinging to autumn today as perilously as the few golden leaves left on the boughs. SOTD is Avon’s Topaze, an aldehydic floral originally released in 1935; my bottle is probably from the early 1990’s when Avon reissued some of its classics. From an old Avon description: “Luxurious and delicate, it mingles the natural freshness of a wildflower bouquet, the exquisite undertones of rose and carnation, the voluptuous warmth of musk and amber. Topaze lifts the spirits and invites admiration.”

Topaze was a favorite of mine as a young girl, partially because topaz was my November birthstone (at least until ‘citrine’ replaced it and ‘topaz’ became more synonymous with the blue version rather than the lovely golden yellow stone in the ring my dad gave me on my 12th birthday.) Surprisingly, and serendipitously, I’ve reconnected recently with several long-long-ago friends, so a bit of nostalgia today seems appropriate.

Today I’m wearing Rochas Man. It’s one of those fragrances that took me a while to commit to buying. Now I wonder why…

It came in a gift set with a bath towel. It’s such a good quality towel for a freebie that I decided I should have a few more of them. Needless to say I won’t be running out of Rochas man soon!

Both gorgeous, for sure. With limited perfume $$ to spend (and both of these, as gift packs with shower gels, lotions, travel minis, etc, are still pretty pricey), I’m trying to tell myself I should pick only one. But the stunning bottles alone are enough to push me over the edge; the travel minis are so useful; and the scents divine.

I’m not doing a good job talking myself out of them, am I?

Ah, I see, yes sometimes “discount” gift sets are a bit of a false economy… You’re in Canada I take it? How’s your access to online discounters? FragranceNet for instance has both Jour and Ambre des Merveilles–maybe you could keep one gift set and just get a small bottle of the other?

Or, keep both gift sets but plan to swap the lotions or minis, to stretch out your perfume pennies?

So far today just a little Crabtree & Evelyn Tarocco Orange, Eucalyptus & Sage hand lotion–it was a gift so I didn’t pick the scent but it’s grown on me! I daresay it’s as good as most of the JM body creams, at about half price ($20 for 3.5 oz to $75 for 5.9 oz).

Meanwhile I could use advice: I have 35£ off 150£ coupon at Liberty and a potential perfume mule in London at this very moment! With the VAT rebate, this could mean $150 for 100ml bottle of Rose 31, instead of the some $280 it would cost here in the US (with sales tax). Enticing! However, said mule is flying to Paris for a few days before he comes back to the U.S…and he never, under any circumstances, checks luggage. Is it then basically impossible to transport the perfume (which I assume would have to be opened to get liquids through carryon luggage screening to fly from London to Paris) and still be eligible for the VAT refund (which I understand requires the item to be unused when you exit the EU–i.e. his Paris to US flight)? I’ve actually never had my ducks in a row to execute this process, so if anyone can advise on the ins and outs, I’d be grateful!

Tarocco Orange is lovely. I work somewhere that sells C&E and when we first got it in, I thought it was kind of weird, but over the summer I started using the body spray, and it really grew on me.

Sorry I can’t help with your perfume mule troubles. I wish that I could, and best of luck!

I am NOT an expert on this, but I have traveled a bit internationally over the past few years and have never had my liquids (under the requirement–which I am pretty sure is 100 mls or less) opened. He will need to remove the perfume from the box and put it in a clear plastic bag, that he will pull out and place on top of his luggage as it goes through the x-ray machine (along with his shampoo and any other liquid toiletries he is carrying…) but that should do it. Customs will understand that he had to remove it from the box for security, but that the bottle is unopened… (I didn’t know you couldn’t get a VAT refund if you opened an item–however. I am certain I have submitted VAT receipts for sweaters or scarves I’ve worn, etc. No one checked the items, just the receipts.)

My two cents for what it is worth…

CH: As a regular perfume mule for myself, let me try: The process would be to take the unopened bottle to the VAT refund counter at the airport in the UK, the country of purchase, where he’ll get an instant refund – this is before check-in. If the check-in folks insist on opening it, it would then be post-refund. However, I do think there is a small risk that the liquid will not be let through, even though it is 100 ml (i.e. the allowable limit), because the check-in folks are allowed to use their discretion, and perfume seems to be one of those “potent” liquids. Can he not be persuaded to check in luggage? Pretty please!

Ohh dear I hadn’t even thought to worry that it might get stopped at security. Hrmmm. (Regrettably he’d rather gnaw off his own arm than wait at baggage claim, so I’m at the mercy of the baggage screeners…)

But as for the VAT portion–I thought you could only get a refund when leaving the EU? As per this: https://www.gov.uk/vat-consumers/taxfree-shopping That’s what gave me the impression he’d have to do it in Paris…

Do you think so, because of this:
“2.Show the goods, the completed form and your receipts to customs at the point when you leave the EU (this might not be in the UK)”.
            ?

I have been paid in the UK, even if I went on to another EU country. Besides, at that point, they won’t actually know whether he is checking the luggage or not.

The UK VAT claims point is way before the customs point, and they are very obliging. I don’t think they know or care whether it has been checked in or not or where you go next. They even pay up to something like 3 – 6 months later, if you forgot to claim when you bought it and you happen to be traveling through and have the paperwork.

Ooh that’s so encouraging–yes it was that section that gave me pause, but now that I’m looking at Heathrow airport’s info about it (http://www.heathrowairport.com/static/Heathrow/Downloads/PDF/Multilingual_PDF/VAT_Refunds/vat-refund-leaflet_EN.pdf) it does seem like a U.S. passport, receipt and the VAT form from Liberty should be enough! Thank you so much, this is very exciting…

No. They mostly just ask to see the receipts – and it can even be receipts from a previous visit, i.e. when the goods are no longer on you. Occasionally it looks like they randomly check every nth suitcase.

      • C.H. says:
        17 November 2014 at 2:41 pm

Oh, it’s so encouraging to hear you haven’t had the items checked, just the receipts. And actually this all makes me realize, the low-maintenance Le Labo packaging wouldn’t be shrink-wrapped anyhow, just a cardboard box I believe, so removing the bottle for security wouldn’t make a difference anyhow. Hmm! Thanks so much for these data points.

Chiming in as another Tarocco Orange fan 🙂 It’s not quite as complex as Concentre Orange Verte but does have a very similar feel and is perhaps a little sweeter. If I want even less of a herbal feel I go for Body Shop Satsuma. Unfortunately South Africa doesn’t get the EDT of this but the body oil is lovely 🙂

My opinion is don’t do it..you could end up paying $150 for nothing. Although the TSA had loosened up on the volume of liquids you can bring, they still restrict the larger volumes to things that one gets at Duty Free shops that are obviously sealed (or in many cases, you actually get the items you bought delivered to you once you’re going up the jetway). It almost doesn’t matter what rules and policies are published…whatever the TSA workers decide when it comes to liquids, you are pretty much at their mercy and you also really can’t argue with them because you could get arrested for being non-cooperative. Anyway, this is just my 2 cents.

OTOH, I’ve never had a problem with 100ml. If the rules say 100ml, I’m allowed to carry 100ml. Surely it’s pretty hard to argue about what’s written in black & white!

Yeah–also the more I read about it, the more the potential hassle seems to be–I think relative to the inconvenience to my kind perfume mule, and the risk of not getting it at all, saving a hundred bucks is probably not worth it. Bummer, but you’re right, not as much of a bummer as having it fail altogether.

I too tried and was hopeful regarding Caron, but it turned out to be too masculine for me.
Amber Oud is strong stuff. I actually need to put it in a separate area away from other samples or else everything starts smelling like it. Apply with a light touch and it is really wonderful to wear throughout the day.

If you can find a bottle of Caron Belles Plus Lavandes, it’s still quite cheap ($40 ish for 3.3oz) and is a really pretty but simple lavender vanilla

I second the Plus Belles Lavandes which is like a simplified version of Pour un Homme. Another great twist on the theme is L’Impacte de Pour un Homme, the extrait of PuH. It’s very soft and wears really close to the skin.
Another Lavender I really like is the By Kilian Absinthe Verte one. ….Heaven or something.

Still really cold and snowy/icy here and I decided that what I really needed was a floral and it had to be something just the opposite of what I’d normally wear in winter. I put on some Alexa Lixfeld 001 to enjoy its LOTV and jasmine (and a little light tea, too).

I remember Avon’s Topaze. Mom used to let me put a little of hers on, and one day I got my own cream perfume container of it. I always liked the yellow color associated with it.

    Morning everyone,
wearing Vetiver Fatal today, it’s a miserable rainy day in my part of the world!
Running out of perfume and considering to buy Hypnose Homme Lancome, which I used to like a lot in the past. In fact, suggestions for a nice easy-to-find winter perfume for a travelling man would be welcome! No access to niche perfumery here, rather shopping mall type of selection!
Have a good day one and all

If you have a L’Occitane in your mall (and you can also order from their website), I would recommend Eau des Baux. It is so nice and quite reasonably priced. If only I could get my husband to wear fragrance, this would be what I would have him wear!

I second Eau des Baux, and I also love Prada Amber intense for men! If you want something with a classical feel then Heritage by Guerlain is lovely too. I would describe the first as an amber, the second as a deep tolu and myrrh and the third as carnation/clove-patchouli. One more suggestion is Bel Ami Vetiver (Hermes) which is a more meaty sweet leather undercut by said vetiver.

I am also in Sensuous, because it’s also dreary here. Something that smells like candy is following me around, though — I can’t tell if it’s my lipstick or hairspray or something in the office or what.

Tried the sample of Wisteria Hysteria this morning!

Big success – 7 hours later I am still getting tendrils of scent – I think I dabbed it onto my watchband as well as my wrist… and it seemed to put me into a really good mood about 15 minutes after I put it on. And adorable hubby thought it smelled good too.

Wish it were not so darned expensive. What else sort of smells like this, I wonder?

I don’t know what else smells like it, but it had excellent staying power on me and is a very interesting scent! I smelled it on my scarf for probably 2 weeks after I wore it. I know it was that one because it has such a distinctive smell. Delightful!

Wearing Fresh Brown Sugar, which is actually more lemony than Lemon Sugar. I do love it, even though it is really just a very sweet lemon. Got very little sleep tonight (thanks to 15-month old twin girls) and have a headache, so needed something simple, comforting and not demanding at all.

Lovely! I got Lemon Sugar when I was pregnant with my daughter; it was all I could stand and just loved it! Smell in it now reminds me of when she was a baby.

I’m in Jean Patou’s Sublime today. I got the bottle, half full, at a garage sale on Saturday for $3.00. How could I pass that up? Do I love it? No, no love. But I do like it enough to not feel like I wasted $3! As for weather–85 degrees here, but that darned cold front is to come through tonight and drop us to a high of 59 tomorrow. Wahhhh.

Dreary and rainy here too, supposed to get down into the 50’s tonight, which means it’s electric blanket time!

SOTD is Black Flower Mexican Vanilla by Dame Perfumery- this is a nice non-sweet vanilla that is still recognizably vanilla, therefore cozy and comforting, but doesn’t venture into Cupcake land, thankfully! I bought a 7ml size and can I just give a shout out to the perfumer who makes this choice available?? Whoop Whoop! Thank You Dame Perfumery!

Angel Day was hilarious, what a romp and joy to read! I couldn’t comment on the day, due to late work commitments, boss in town, etc. I started off with the Rose Garden flanker, and then graduated to the real deal later in the day. Love Angel a lot, but it has to be a match for my mood and the day has to have elements of a larger than life existence for it to feel right 🙂

I was sneezing my head off when I woke up this morning, so I decided to DIY it, thinking something natural with lower sillage would be easier on the nose. So far so good. I decided it was also a chance to revisit the patchouli thing I did a couple weeks ago to see how it’s progressing after having had two weeks to age. Not bad, though I think maybe the davana was a bad idea, or at the very least I used too much.. it seems to be dominating the top more than it did at first. Now that that part’s faded I am happier with it.

I also took a stab at room fragrance over the weekend. I had gotten a wax potpourri heater thing at Kroger (it was cute and only $5), and I decided I was going to try to make my own wax for it. It was fun. I wasn’t sure how it was going to work, or if the fragrance was going to diffuse through the room since I was using natural oils. I tried it out at a time when I was going to be out of my apartment for a few minutes (going to the laundry room), so I was able to smell it in the room when I came back in. I think it worked pretty well overall.

I can testify to the potential reach of wax heaters. Someone in a nearby cubicle at work had one, and the scent was strong in my cube 20 feet away in a large open area. Of course, she probably had some kind of industrial strength Yankee Candle type wax, but the potential is there. In fact, I’d guess most scented candles work by melting and heating the wax rather than by burning the scent like an incense (but that’s totally a guess).

Such a great idea to make your own wax with oils that you like!

My house was built in 1953 and the bathroom has never been touched apart from a few cosmetic improvements. Today two men are gutting it for a much-needed re-do. Frankly, it looks better with the exposed framing than it did when the walls were up.

To cope with noise and dust and joyful anticipation I am wearing 24, Faubourg today.

Good luck! Dare I venture a guess that it was all a horrible Mamie-Eisenhower-pink prior to today? Changing my bathroom from awful pink to lovely black-and-white was the best feeling. It will be so worth the noise, dust, etc.

It was BLACK and PINK! Apparently a cutting-edge color combo in the ’50’s. The workmen have gutted everything now, had to cut the cast iron tub in half to remove it, and will be back tomorrow to repair dry rot and frame the new shower. Not too noisy today except for the tub-cutting.

Ugh. Mine was all pink. The tub, toilet, sink, floor tiles, wall tiles and wall paint. ALL PINK. I hated it so much! Although, amazingly, there are people out there who love mid-century modern, and who think pink bathrooms are the best ever.

Before I had the money to re-do it, I just painted the walls blue, stuck Hello Kitty decals all over the walls, and got H.K. bath accessories. That was a fun statement, and definitely took the curse off the pink. Nonetheless, I was so happy when the pink all went away.

I LOVE black and pink 50’s bathrooms! Pink basins! My sister lived in a flat years ago with the classiest pink and black 50s bathroom I’ve ever seen- it had a big pink tub and poodle tiles! I’d happily have those in my bathroom today 🙂

Me too! Lots of the older apartment buildings here have black and pink bathrooms with tiny hexagonal floor tiles which I love. I also love 24 Faubourg for at home but don’t think it would be strong enough to help me survive the world of pain that is any renovation. I would have worn Angel and lurked near any tradie who looked like he wasn’t following the plans…

Tauer Perfumes L’Air du Desert Marocain, the perfect compensation for a very cold, rainy, dreary November day. This must have been my first indie perfume purchase and it’s still in my top ten.

OTOH, I smell a lot more patchouli in it than I used to. I wonder if that’s how the perfume has aged, or if my nose has changed, or I’m more aware of separate notes, or maybe the patch in L’AdDM stands out more now because I’ve gotten used to the new neutered patch derivatives. Has anyone else noticed anything like this?

I noticed that too. I bought a large decant of LDDM a little while back and the patch seems to be intensifying. In any case it’s one of my all time favorites. A great choice for a cold, wet day. You smell delicious!

Once again, chiming in after hours. The Harvard Art Museums just opened again after years of renovations and there was free admission today. So after my morning business activities, I sprayed on some Rose de Kandahar from a sample provided by a generous NST perfumista, and headed on over. If you live in the area and have the time, do go. The renovation is spectacular. They took off the roof and replaced it with glass so the middle of the building is open to a lot of natural light. As I was walking around the Far Eastern rooms, I could have sworn that a fellow was following me from piece to piece. I imagined it might have been the R de K I was wearing. I finally stopped at a painting depicting a group of men being beheaded in their sleep and it was a bit too close to home considering what has been happening in the news lately. I abruptly walked away and at the very last minute realized that the guy had been standing right beside me. It kind of creeped me out so I escaped to another part of the building.
Tonight I treated myself to a clove cigar and sprayed on some more Rose de Kandahar. I’m planning on getting a bottle of it when it becomes available, a holiday gift to myself!
