Thursday scent of the day 11/13

Posted by Robin on 13 November 2014 135 Comments

Beyoncé in Thierry Mugler 2013 Mrs. Carter tour

What fragrance did you pick today?

I'm wearing Thierry Mugler Womanity. I feel pretty much the same about it as I did when I reviewed it in 2010: nice enough, but hardly the successor to Angel that they're looking for.

Reminder: tomorrow, 11/14, is L'Effet Angel Friday: wear Thierry Mugler Angel, an Angel flanker or spawn of Angel (i.e. something influenced by Angel), with partial credit for wearing another Mugler fragrance. The following Friday, 11/21, is Unsniffed Friday: wear a perfume you bought before you'd smelled it.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Beyoncé, wearing Thierry Mugler for the announcement of her 2013 Mrs. Carter tour. You can see the entire outfit here.

Lush Smell of Freedom: soft spice with a lot of depth. Would be a very wearable everyday scent. So looking fwd to Angel Day! and it is fascinating to see how – days before Angel Day – the anticipation and comments by Angel lovers and haters are coming in. The interest it has sparked is a sure sign of how revolutionary Angel has been. Thanks so much again, Robin, for what NST is giving us – a space to think, engage and enjoy!

I’m nervous/excited for Angel day. I warned my husband about it this morning since we commute together – instead of spraying before leaving the house, I may end up applying in the parking lot after we arrive. It’s so freakin’ potent.

Here is my Angel application / containment procedure: spray onto index finger (do this over sink so you can wash away excess). Blot if necessary. Apply small dab to arm. Wash hands immediately.

And of course you could also spray onto q-tip to apply the dab.

Or follow the restaurateur’s “essence of” lobster application technique–waving the bug over the soup and thinking deep thoughts… Go for the essence of Angel the same way.

Me, I plan to wear it loud, and wear it proud. Watch out!!!

A guy on POL once said the correct method of application was to spray a Qtip and wave it in front of yourself. 🙂 LOL. I cannot wear Angel at all, will be wearing my Angel clone Chopard Wish instead!

I’m sorry! I should have done a list of “spawn of Angel”…there are some pretty innocuous fragrances that were inspired by Angel! A few from the comments Tuesday: Giorgio Armani Si, Jimmy Choo, La Vie Est Belle, Flowerbomb, EL Pleasures Delight. Arguably any strong & sweet fruitchouli. Katy Perry Killer Queen, maybe even Chanel Coco Noir.

What about Pink Sugar? I visited my mother the other month and was bowled over by her new fragrance. She proudly told me, “I found a big bottle at Costco!” Indeed…

I have to disagree with one thing: Flowerbomb is NOT innocuous. If only you knew how long it can last in an elevator…

I think Badgley Mischka (the first release) was and still is the best of the Angel type spawn scents. Easily the most elegant and refined for a fruitchouli. Not sickly sweet at all.

I don’t think that there is any patchouli in Pink Sugar (thank goodness). I own Pink Sugar, but I don’t think I’ll ever wear it again — I can no longer take the licorice and burnt sugar.

I may be in the clear with this one 😉

Maybe Coco Noir? Definitely Coco Noir! It’s my SOTA, after testing Angel at bedtime last night (no nightmares, for any of you who might be wondering), and I say they bear sufficient resemblance to one another to meet the challenge (taking to heart Robin’s advice yesterday: “Hey, do what ya gotta do”. 🙂 Coco is potent, isn’t she?!

Today I wore Demeter’s Snow, wanting some relief from florals. It is also the first quite cold day of Fall, so it works. Of course cold is relative. The high is going to be in the 40s. As I age, I am constantly grateful that I live in the South during the winter. Of course then there’s summer…

Dior Eau Noire today, for chores and shopping. It was a sunny/cloudy/windy day and cool when there was no sun so this was a great pick.
After I settled down to chill out later (day off- yay! :)), I went for L’Artisan Vanillia. Giving my decants some love 🙂

Today is Chanel’s 1932. I was given a sample by a generous fellow NST-er. It’s nice enough, but probably not something I’d buy. I like florals, and already have a bunch. The lilac in the middle notes is lovely, but doesn’t last long, and it gets a bit ozonic in the drydown.

I did like this one when I had a sample of the edt, but haven’t tried the parfum version that came out. And I agree, it’s lovely, but nothing saying “need fb of this” worthy. I wish they’d make a parfum one of Bel Respiro though.

The packaging really is a treat and makes you feel special when opening it to put on one of the samples. However, I feel like more went into the packaging than the scents. I liked Field Notes, Chemical Bonding, and After My Heart or whatever the first one is (the lilac one), but I agree – none are lasting or unique enough to warrant FB status.

PHI is awesome! Totally FB worthy and glad you are going for it. I think it must be my all time favorite scent and I am quite particular about wearing it- I want to be able to devote myself to it 100% when I wear it. FM Portrait of a Lady today. Felt like that kind of day.

I am very, very nervous for Angel day tomorrow as well. I have a tester somewhere in one of my disorganized cosmetic bags of testers and I usually try to avoid touching it when I’m rooting through the bag for fear of getting some on my finger!

Ha! I do that, too. I put some samples in their own bags so I don’t bump up against them accidentally. I love those very little zipper top plastic bags. People use them for pills. I use them for isolating perfumes with a mind of their own.

SOTD is Lalique Encre Noire. Bought blind based on reviews, and it did not disappoint! So glad that I found something great for a good price, especially considering that I don’t feel the need to buy Chanel Sycomore now 😀

Since I’ve had a few successful blind buys, I am considering another – Rochas Femme. Sounds great, not too expensive. However – can anyone give me thoughts on EDP vs. EDT??

Yes, Encre Noire pour homme. I guess the women’s version is more floral than vetiver. There is a discussion on the similarities between Encre Noire and Sycomore in boisdejamsin’s review of EN, basically that Sycomore is a smokier and a tad sweeter.

I have a bottle of the EDT, and I think I had previously tried the EDP. I like both, but I felt that the cumin stood out more in the EDT, and the drydown is a bit thinner. I have a 100ml bottle of the EDT, which is more than I’ll probably ever use, so I’d be happy to send you a decant. You can email me at countsjc at the gmail.

I think I’ll wear this again tomorrow and see if it changes at all. I got the sample from the recent Luckyscent autumn grab bag they had. I’d never even heard of it, but after reading up on the notes I thought I’d give it a try. According to Fragrantica more people pick up on the citrus and fresh spicy notes, but I get more incense, which I’m loving, iris, and a bit of spice. It’s got a teensy bit of sweetness so that the incense doesn’t come off as dry or churchy. I got a whiff of something like grapefruit when I first put it on, but it didn’t last long at all. That was about the only citrus part of it I got – so far. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. 🙂

First off, I am loving that picture of Beyonce. She is such an amazing woman.
Tomorrow will be difficult for me because I am really not a fan of Mugler. I have tried wearing “Angel” but it doesn’t mix well with my chemistry. But, because I am always a “team player”, I am willing to take one for the team.
My SOTD is Cristalle by Chanel. I like it alot. It just reminds me of spring time when I smell it. But “old man winter” has arrived in Texas and its smelling quite nice on me today.

I wore Cristalle yesterday, a mainstay in my rotation throughout the spring and summer. But with the cold snap (I can’t really complain, it’s only 36) the Cristalle felt cold as well. Sometimes in mid winter I use my summer scents to cheer me up, but not sure I will with Cristalle – might need to go more beachy. Cristalle will definitely be something to look forward to when we thaw out!

SOTD is O’Driu’s Eva Kant. It’s really weird, but I can’t decide if it’s good weird or bad weird. And I’m having a terrible time trying to pick it apart, though admittedly I’m never really good at that. It reminds me of when I first smelled Chypre Rouge, a stew of a fragrance that I could not make my mind up about. Has anyone else here tried this?

As a rule, I don’t usually enjoy vetiver, but as in all things there are exceptions. So today I’m wearing Grey Vetirer and… I do like it! Fits perfectly with this day I’m having.

I’m finishing off a sample of Etro Etra today. I think a FB is going on my Christmas list, as I felt sad to see it was almost drained! It’s so snuggly and cosy, and is scenting my wool jumper perfectly on this cold day. I particularly love the cardamom in it (I’m never sure whether it’s ‘cardamom’ or ‘cardamon’ – just went to my spice rack to check :))

I needed to be non pushy today, so I am wearing Cashmere Mist. on first sniff, to me this seemed mild to the point of being insipid, but my husband loves when I wear it, and, having worn it a lot, it is growing on me – I have so many positive associations to the scent, now, I guess.

The Cashmere Mist deodorant is great, I wear it all the time! Not strongly scented and works well with just about any perfume. I get it at Nordstrom’s.

I’m wearing Mary Greenwell Plum today. It’s warm, sweet and floral to counteract the cold, snowy and freezing weather outside, and it is doing a lovely job. Now I’m curious if the others she’s come out with (Cherry, Lemon, etc.) are worth sampling. Surely they can’t be as wonderful as Plum. 🙂

Oh, I LOVE MG Plum. So does my husband. In fact, I just got an e-mail after lunch from Net-A-Porter that their stock of MGP is getting low in case I’d like to order more now. I’m not sure I’m ready to buy another bottle–$100 on myself with Christmas coming so quickly seems ill-guided. I’ve been curious about her others, too. I hope someone has tried the Cherry and chimes in.

Wearing Indult Tihota today. It’s rainy, windy and miserable and this is cheering me up. Especially as I have the I’m-off-sugar rages (going white sugar free until Christmas. It usually takes a good week to get through withdrawal. Seriously! Kicking sugar has serious withdrawal symptoms).

That sounds awesome but oddly frightening at the same time. I’d love to smell like a Tootsie Roll, but I don’t think I could handle that kind of sweet all day. Is it really sweet the whole day? Or does it change much at all?

If you don’t get any on your clothing, then it is not very strong. I accidentally got some on my shirt this morning, and I’m just getting occasional whiffs now.

It does not change much and it does remain sweet, but it is not a sillage monster.

An odd SOTD for me–AV edt by Adrienne Vittadini. A friend gave me a mini yesterday so I am trying it out. VERY 1990s. Clean, fresh, warm, musky. I feel like I’ve been seated on a plane next to a heavily made-up blond who isn’t really pretty, but she’s so well put together you have to admire her. Can’t find any edt’s for sale so it must be dc. The edp though costs about $15 for 3 oz. (!!!) Too bad I don’t want it!

However, I can still smell last night’s Ambre 114 from Histoires de Parfums. ‘Sokay. I wish it was 24 Fauborg’s drydown instead. But I generally almost always wish everything was 24 Fauborg.

SOTD is Coco edp. Our first really really cold day demanded it of me.

Yesterday I had to do some library PR with the local ladies who lunch. It was just awesome perfume heaven. I smelled 3 No 5’s; one Asja (or something very very similar); and one super woody oakmossy spicy one that must be either Estee; Wrappings; or Aromatics Elixir. I felt like taking a pause from my powerpoint to ask everyone what they were wearing. It was nice to be in so many powerful clouds of scent. I hugged one of the older lady No 5s just b/c she smelled so good. I actually said “oh, you smell like No 5, you smell so good!” And she just blushed. It was so cute.

I’m no longer a Lancome Cuir virgin thanks to Connie, a generous NST pal who sent me a sample during the last swap! Not only did we swap perfume and chocolate, but also a number of nice emails. I am so grateful for the NST community and friends I have made. Regarding Cuir…I finally understand the root of all the adoration. This is my 3rd wearing and I can say how truly lovely, rich and elegant a fragrance this is. <3

31 Rue Cambon for me today in honor of just finishing the book The Secret of Chanel No. 5.
I don’t have No. 5 because I don’t care for it, but the book was quite good and a fascinating read. The final pages talked about the lack of high quality jasmine out there and so Chanel formed a multi year contract with a family in Grasse to produce jasmine for No. 5 and other perfume’s of theirs alone. Appartently it is one of the few scents that still smell exactly as it did when it was first created even with all the regulation and constrants on ingrediants.

Since I’m *finally* smelling things after being sick I wanted to treat myself to a fragrance I knew I liked, rather than test another from the hoard of samples I’m going through. So tonight I wore my sample of Do Son EdP again and fully reinvigorated my love affair with it. It’s the first of all the perfumes I’ve tried that really makes me swoon. Though there are a couple others that I enjoy enough to be decant or FB worthy, none are like my relationship with Do Son. I’ll have to get a full bottle soon.

SOTD = Tom Ford Amber Absolute

Why oh why was this discontinued? I got some from the recent swap. I had to perform a rescue mission due to a leaky atomizer but was able to salvage approximately 0.7 mLs. I got some on me and fell in love immediately. This morning, I wore two tiny spritzes and it is still going strong! Any ideas on how I can acquire a FB or largish decant outside of e Bay?
