Wednesday scent of the day 10/29

Posted by Robin on 29 October 2014 117 Comments

Andrea Maack drawing

Happy Wednesday! Do tell us what fragrance you're wearing today.

I picked Andrea Maack Coal. Has anyone tried her newer fragrance, Coven?

Reminder: this Friday, 10/31, for Halloween wear your quirkiest or weirdest or spookiest fragrance. The next week, 11/7, we're doing "down the rabbit hole Friday": wear the perfume that turned you into a perfumista (whatever that means to you).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Clair des Merveilles -love this for days when I want a second skin salty/beachy fragrance. I find the dry down to just melt into wrists..

I’m wearing Bottega Veneta. Unfortunately I’m traveling this week and I don’t think I brought anything spooky for Friday! Maybe I’ll wear something that smells like candy instead.

SOTD is Prada L’eau Ambree. This is my first time to wear this. I got several minis a few weeks ago, and this was one. I really like it. For some reason I picked this instead of the Eau de Merveilles that I had planned to wear, and thinking about my reasoning, I realized it was because I was wearing shades of brown today. Do the colors you choose to wear impact the choice of the fragrance you put on?

Yep. Colour and/or style. And mood and weather. Or if I’m wearing my work uniform, just mood and weather. (See, I NEED this many to choose from- it’s a fine art! 😉 )

I love L’eau Ambree. And yes, I’d say colour of clothing is one of my top two determinants of scent choice each day (the other being weather). But I’ve been a bit stumped……what scent does Navy evoke? every time I wear Navy blue, I feel a little lost in choosing a scent….. If I had the EDP version of AG’s Nuit Etoilee it might be that, but the EDT doesn’t seem quite right.

Maybe a cool iris? I am wearing a navy blazer today with a purple shirt and FM Iris Poudre. SL Iris silver mist, Hermes Hiris, TDC Bois d’Iris – navy + chilly iris seems like an elegant combo. Not that I’m super elegant today, what with waking up late and just throwing on something acceptable for work 😉

Yes, definitely. I tend to coordinate by my mood, what my day will be like, and what I am wearing. There are only some fragrances that I have really specific feelings about though. For instance, I have a hard time wearing Infusion d’Iris with anything super bright (like cobalt blue or fuscia) but I can wear it with most anything else.

Yes, totally. Color, mood, style, statement and scent all go together – and some days it all just falls into place, and other days not. Thanks for introdcucing the color idea, PriscillaE. To me navy blue can go with Aromatics Elixir – I somehow associate both with efficiency

Absolutely! My fragrance choice today was inspired by my shirt. I’m wearing a light green & white striped shirt and decided to wear Atelier Trefle Pur, which is pale green in color and character.

And there’s so much pinkness in perfumeland to go with pink or general girliness in clothing – or sometimes the opposite is nice: wearing something girly smelling with a khaki/white shirt look

Amaranthine today. I adore this stuff. It’s not weird to me at all, and despite the humongous amount of perfumes I have to choose from everyday, this is one I reach for often- it’s just so pretty and happy and a little bit exotic.

I’d love a quick take on Coal, which is one of those fragrances whose sales description sounds intriguing, but a little hard to imagine whether is successfully realized.
I am wearing Luten’s L’Eau, which in this fall weather seems more minty than usual.

Atelier Cologne Grand Neroli here. Weird weather today — a warm, muggy morning is supposed to give way to a cool, rainy afternoon — so I just picked something subtle enough not to grate in either.

Osmanthus by Ormonde Jayne from my discovery set today. It’s a bit too fresh for me right now, but pretty.

I did as Hajusuuri suggested and read Kafkaesque’s review of L’incendiare. I didn’t get quite the same feel for it that she did, but perhaps I just don’t know Fille en Aiguilles well enough. I did definitely get the plumminess that is akin to that in Feminite du Bois, so maybe I just need to mix a bunch of Serges into a Serge stew and see if I come up with L’incendiare 🙂

So far, there have been a few from Amouage I’m not in love with. I adore the heart of Dia, but the super soap bubble aldehydic opening is way too much for me. Wasn’t impressed by Ciel nor Opus i either.

The new Journey (warm honey to me) and it has elements of the weirdness of the library collection, I felt. Maybe saffron? Then I do love all of the usual suspects: Gold, Dia, Memoir, Jubilation. I enjoyed some of the other newer ones too, like Honour and Fate. Think I appreciate the house’s heavy-handedness, unashamedly saying: now smell this! 🙂 – smooth blends of wellbeing

Ineke Sweet William today, from the swap. I have no idea what the flower smells like, not being of horticultural bent, but this is peach and spices on a woody base. Pretty, but kind of not me, if you know what I mean. Glad I tried it, though.

Sweet William is a single petal flower often called “pinks” – it is normally a perennial but many people grow them as annuals. It is a dianthus plant that is related to carnation. D. chinensis is the single flower variety most people find in the garden center in annual packs, even though it can grow as a perennial if the conditions are right. D. barbatus is a perennial that grows taller and has flowers in clusters and can often be found in the wild in sunny fields. Dianthus/pinks/sweet william, etc. is the carnation family and smells like clove/sweet/cinnamony. Dianthus don’t always smell. Your fragrance sounds very nice!

Today I’m giving Do Son EdP a real test (not like the in-store spritz with a million other things). So far I’m enjoying it a lot more than I expected to – it may be FB worthy – or at least decant worthy!

I’m trying to wear my weird Duchaufours this week but the ones I put on today turned out to be comfortable rather than weird: Eau d’Italie Baume du Doge and L’AP Mechant Loup.

Last night I wore Eau d’Italie Sienne l’Hiver, which is a bit weird, but less so than I remembered. I may go straight for Timbuktu later today.

Ooh Mechant Loup would be a good ideal for Halloween! Or Fou d’Absinthe! L’AP masculines have some really good options…

Apparently I can smell Cashmeran really well, because Mechant Loup just smells warm and cuddly to me, with the slightest hint of traditional masculine notes. I get none of the cement or wet dog that Cashmeran suggests to some noses.

Agree – I wish L’AP were on the men’s fragrance counter in every department store!

Roja Dove Enslaved – densely blended, competent and yes, a little intoxicating. Thoughts on Enslaved?

SOTD is Atelier Trefle Pur. As mentioned above, I chose my scent today partially because of the color shirt I am wearing – it’s light green and so is Trefle Pur. And of course, it fit the weather too since we are having yet another warm day.

A sample of Hugo Boss’s Boss Ma Vie Pour Femme came in the mail today. It’s well-done for a fresh floral, but I’m pretty maxed out on ‘pretty and inoffensive’ scents in my collection.

I joined the Amouage brigade this morning with Ubar– I drained my decant a month or so ago but a friend swapped her Ubar samples for some samples of my orange/citrus scents. I so way did better! (Me not talk too pretty today….sigh!)

Going back through my Le Labos and re-testing them with the new more is more approach. Cuir 28 today and I can actually smell it this time, but still expect more from a leather Dubai exclusive that costs the Earth.

I have the same feeling about many Le Labo’s perfumes, not only exclusives (even though I like several of their perfumes).

Halloween is just about here in my neck-of-the-woods. I’m very much looking forward to tonight’s local civic orchestra family Halloween concert, music will be an eclectic mix of classical (Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz, Bach’s Fugue in D Minor) and Broadway (Phantom meets Wicked!) – a wonderful event to entice the next generation of concert-goers.
My SOTE will be Ghost Deep Night, their second scent, released in 2001, a spicy/woody mix with a touch of sweet. A fusion of rose and Belle de Nuit, a delicate apricot/peach note and a soft vanilla/musk/woods base, it reminds me of a deeper, sexy, evening version of the original classic Burberry I enjoy so much. And for those of us who enjoy the whole package, the deep purple crescent moon bottle is absolutely gorgeous!

Deep Night is definitely a ‘purple’ scent, the color of a chilly, damp, spooky autumn night!

SOTD (for the second day in a row) is Naomi Goodsir Or du Serail from a brand-new FB (not just a sample dab). It’s lovely – wood, pipe tobacco, warm apple pie and maybe a hint of coconut – and lasts close to 24 hours on me. This weekend I’m going to try it forearm-to-forearm against Tabac Aurea to see how similar/different they are. Any predictions?

Can’t wait to hear the results of your comparison!

Tabac Aurea is one of my all times faves and I’m not familiar with the Goodsir (which sounds fab, btw). I’m going to root for TA to win the Smackdown!

SOTD started off as Black Flower Mexican Vanilla, then this afternoon tested some BK Smoke for the Soul (so far, meh) and now in De Profundis. I like to mix it up I guess 😉

    Happy Humpday to All!

SOTD = Serge Lutens De Profundis

The Deva-love and almost late spring-like weather prompted me to spritz away and it is indeed gorgeous – a touch of green to a lovely combination of crisp flower mix (not heady, not indolic, not in-your-face BWF and not perfumey flowery). I will faux-retire my shiny purple atomizer until spring 2015!

Rose Anonyme today. I’ll be draining my little sample soon, but it’s OK, because I got a mini in the swap! BTW, where do we give swap feedback? Both people I traded with were fantastic.
