The damage so far: third quarter 2014 buying poll

Posted by Robin on 2 October 2014 167 Comments

Donatella with her perfume cabinet

Time flies...it's October, and Donatella Versace, Our Lady of Perfumed Overindulgence,1 wants to know what you bought in the 3rd quarter (July, August and September) of 2014.

Update: the poll is now closed!

poll-9832-4

My purchases...

I bought the travel size of Pharrell Williams Girl. With tax it was about $35, and added to my first quarter damage that brings my total for the year so far to $128.

As always, report your purchases in the comments if you dare! And as always, we don't include samples or gifts, and you can count miniatures, decants and bottle-splits howsoever you like (I usually count them as half bottles). Samples don't generally count at all, even though some of us spend considerable sums obtaining them.

1. Why does Donatella host (against her will, mind you) the damage polls? There is no real reason other than the picture of her perfume collection, which shows that she indulges regularly at the perfume counter. The image, by the way, is originally from Allure magazine and appears here courtesy of Blogdorf Goodman.

I only bought one fragrance, the utterly wonderful L’Impacte de Pour un Homme by Caron. I’ve already worn it quite a bit, so I am really pleased.

It’s so nice when you wear something as much as you think you will! I don’t, always.

Yep, it’s one of those scents that I actually crave on a regular basis.
I own a number of Lutens’s creations, stunners, but I never seem to wear them.

DSH Alba perfume extract dram, $31 (I was prepared for this to be a wee bottle, but not quite so wee as the one that came. However, I wore it to a work thing and my coworker accused the centerpiece of smelling like a funeral, which is one of my peak accomplishments in this life, so it was worth it.)

Donna Karan Gold EDT 1.7 oz, $0 (Amazon points)

Frederic Malle Lys Mediteranee 10 ML travel spray, $52.99

Agent Provocateur l’Agent 1.7 oz, Cacharel Amor Amor 1.7 oz and Versace Crystal Noir 1 oz, $19.99, $24.99 and $29.99.

Demeter Ginger Ale 4 oz, $20.99

Tokyo Milk Dark Tainted Love mini rollerball, $6 (I bought this to make shipping on a Sephora purchase — let’s just say I should have paid shipping. More like Tainted Grape Drank amirite.)

Let’s count the minis as one and call it seven bottles for $185.95.

LOL…great story! And yes, a dram is not so very much perfume, is it?

Ginger Ale is so excellent. And with a four-ounce bottle, you can really soak yourself in it.

I got one bottle, TM Alien Essence Absolue. There are a few more that I really want, but frag funds are very lean right now. A few wonderful swaps have helped keep me in some new juice though. Thanks super swappers for the Encre Noire and Ambra del Nepal!!

I had a saintly quarter. I bought $115 worth of perfume (Atelier Cologne mini set and the original Prada Amber, 30 ml), but all with store credit! Grand total: $0. If we had a nail polish damage poll, however… 😉

D*mn, d*mn!! I knew this was coming, I kept looking at the sidebar and thinking about it all last week, and celebrating that I had bought nothing, NOTHING for once, and then in an early morning fog, bought a NIB 50 mlChinatown bottle off a Facebook friend for a good price on the last bleeding day of September. But it solved my long-standing conscience problems about buying Bond, and I can’t pick up the bottle until a late October visit to Chicago and my lovely friend/P.O.Box (thanks, S!), so perhaps I can count it as Q4? I’m getting a bottle of the re-launched Tauer PHI Une Rose de Kandahar sometime in November, even if I have to arm wrestle someone for it, and then I am done for the year, I swear. Q1-3 were pretty quiet, I’m at only 4 bottles so far, including the Chinatown and two 30 ml Providence bottles, and, I think, $251 total.

Ha, do count it as Q4. Donatella does not mind fancy accounting so long as you come clean eventually.

I do wish Rose de Kandahar would come in those travel sets so I could split with somebody.

When it was first launched last year, it was available as part of Explorer Sets (my largish sample) which was how I ended up with a FB purchase because it was love at first sniff.

The Explorer sets sold out really quickly. I got my two samples (one of which I gave away to a good friend) as part of the Discovery set, but they sold out quickly, too. I was about a week short on getting a FB.

Ha! I do the same thing with Bond perfumes. I just bought a couple of ml of I Love NY for All from Ebay, thereby circumventing giving them any profit. That’s my logic (rationalization), at least.

My personal philosophy for the quarter breakdown is whether or not the money has left my account/been charged to my card or not. Which means that sometimes I’ve purchased and am still waiting to possess, if something is in transit.

But I certainly don’t think that’s the only way to account for purchases.

My philosophy is the same as yours, and my card was charged, so I was joking. It would just be nice to have a quarter without a purchase 🙂

TM Angel Eau Sucree – $16 after Ebay coupons and promos
B&BW Forever Red Vanilla Rum – blind buy for around $12 and it’s not bad
Repetto edt, 30ml – $35 – another blind buy and it reminds me of a little higher quality Yves Rocher Flowerparty so a bit redundant in my collection
Montale Patchouli Leaves, 50ml gently used for $80 – This one’s been on my list for a while so I’m glad I finally have a bottle since my decant is almost gone.

Speaking of decants, I got two Le Labo decants so far–Benjoin 19 and Aldehyde 44, and have already received and loved the latter. There are still around four Le Labo decants I hope to add as well.

I’m trying not to blind buy the Andy Tauer Rose everyone’s buzzing about. My skin seems to amp up whatever he uses for a fragrance base, so I can only wear Orange Star and Une Rose Chypree successfully so far. But the LE Rose is getting a lot of love and I am awfully tempted…

I thought I only bought a bottle of Bronze Goddess, but I guess my memory under-reported, and I actually also got two Pacifica bottles (and a solid), too. Having fragrances at the grocery store is like a cruel trap, but at lease they’re inexpensive. That’s only around $120 total. I’m glad samples don’t count!

I bought nothing this quarter. I’ve been trying to wear things I already own (SO MANY THINGS) and frankly nothing I’ve smelled recently has been worth buying (although actually Reveal is getting a second sniff). And since I’m going to Europe in five months (Florence! Home of Santa Maria Novella!!), I’m saving for that.

It took me about 5 minutes and a backup of purchases on ebay to find out what was it that I bought, which is highly unusual for me, usually I buy a lot and remember them all very well.
This time I bought Onda because I wanted it so much and I found it on ebay, so it was discounted… but when I got it, it was not quite as I remember it. I mean it was Onda surely, but my nose has changed, or my perception of the smell has changed, I think I wanted Rozy at that time, but Onda was on my list of things to buy for soooo long..
I guess what I am trying to say is that I have to learn to buy things when I am actually under their spell not years later because I remember (vaguely) how absolutely great they were.
Onda is great, btw, but great somehow in general, rather than here and now and on me… The other thing I bought was Grand Amour by AG, it is still in the post.

I hope so as well. I agree it is bound to happen when you go over 50, maybe even once you are over 10 of them, you even forget sometimes that you have them, but then there is something wonderful in ‘finding’ it again (on a plus side:)

I am now super careful, but buying too quickly is also not great, it can be a total miss… in fact, I think it is best to have a sample or two, go through them and then either buy or let go – the end. But the real life (I mean money here:) gets in a way a lot and I can never stay focused

Sadly this happened to me this quarter as well. I bought a bottle of Rosine Rose Kashmirie which I had tested multipe times over the past couple of years and finally determined to splurge on it, then when I got it I absolutely hated it. Sold it for half of what I paid for it on Ebay. 🙁 From now on I will only buy things that I have tested right before buying.

I know the whole point of buying something used is to get it much cheaper… But I also know the horrible feeling of selling an all but new bottle for half the price. Been there, done that, and still feel the bruise!

        2 October 2014 at 6:05 pm

I am so sorry to hear that. I love/hate ebay, depending if I sell or buy 🙂 But it least some of it is possible to recover… Speaking of testing before buying,
I go to Harrods to test Cartier (exclusive hours collection). they never give samples (samples are a difficult thing to get, it seems, from Cartier; probably has to do something with status, or with the fact that I do not look like I would ever wear a Cartier watch, I do not know really) Anyway, people on the counter already know me and I cannot say I like it very much, but I test one perfume and one day I really really like it, the other not so much, so I go back… It is not just the matter of money but also of adding another bottle that I semi-like… I want to be in love… LOVE even, especially when it comes to GBP 200 per bottle… Samples is the only way out, or even two. I think I will go on strike – no samples, no sale.. something like that should work:)

Also, the Vero Kern scents can be very different depending on which concentration you get. Love Rubj extrait but couldn’t stand the edp and Rozy edp hardly overlaps with Rozy voile d’ extrait to the point that if my vacation budget had been greater I would have bought both

I agree completely. I also though of that. I bought extract, then went to the shop tried edp, immediately got happier about my extract bottle, since that overripe fruit in the opening of edp is too much for me. But also completely agree on Rozy, should budget allow I’d get two 🙂 So far just a dreaming of edp… one day… one day 🙂

Could have been worse. Bought several 5ml splits blind: Tauer Sotto La Luna, Penhaligon’s Orange Blossom, Le Galion Tubereuse and Whip (these were the recent rereleases), and Cuir Cannage. Two minis: Dame Perfumery Black Flower Mexican Vanilla and a vintage of uncertain provenance called Ferrari Chypre d’Amboise. That was bad enough, at the subtotal of $78. I don’t love the BFMVanilla, though it’s nice, and I did NOT like Whip, but the others are quite lovely.

But then I bought a backup bottle of Mary Greenwell Plum because it’s getting tough to find in the US now (the MG website has it, so I don’t think it’s d/c, but nobody in the US seems to be carrying it at the moment). And I bought a bottle of Lucienne (Lucienne von Doz) on ebay. Plum is a must, and my other bottle is half gone. Lucienne I haven’t fully made my mind up about yet.

TOTAL total, $218. Like I say, I’ve been better. But I’ve been worse, too.

I don’t like Whip – I knew the original was part of a “hunting” set, Whip and Cub, but Whip must have been the gentlemen’s version. The leather in it is nice, but there is also a lot of lavender, and that gives me a headache.

The Tubereuse – I think I read somewhere that Tubereuse was actually the first tuberose-centric commercial fragrance, predating Fracas. (Grain de Musc, maybe?) In any case, it is very green and almost minty-fresh up top and sweetly tuberose after, a true soliflore like Beyond Love. It’s a bit greener than BL – actually, something like Tubereuse Criminelle without the raw meat angle. I think the Le Galion is gorgeous.

Argh, I tired so hard to purchase in September–I wanted to get some of the to-be-discontinued Lush scents, but the ones i wanted were sold out by the time I goto to the site. Then I tried to host a perfume split at the split meet, but we didn’t get enough people, so it’s not going to happen. Maybe October will bring a purchase.

I think they were discontinuing several things, including both items I wanted–Cocktail and The Smell of Weather Turning. At least, they don’t mention those as coming back. Both of those were online-only scents, and as far as I can tell, they were gone instantly.

I was in Paris for all of July, so all of my purchases were made there. While I have never spent such a large amount of money on perfume during such a short period of time, I still feel I was being very restrained. I was quite close to buying SL Chêne as well.

    PdN – Eau d’Été 30 ml
FM – Le Parfum de Thérese 50 ml
    Diptyque – L’ombre dans L’Eau solid

I really need a great light citrus, and Eau d’Été is quite sparkling and summery. I’ve gotten great use out of it, and it also smells better on me than a lot of other, more expensive colognes I’ve tried. Le Parfum de Thérese is probably the perfume I wear the most at the moment, so another great buy. The Diptyque solid is really beautiful, and while I think I prefer the edp, this is great for bringing when travelling.

Still annoyed I didn’t find a scent to buy in London or Paris (didn’t have time to hunt for parfumeries, alas). Fenwick had a couple that aren’t ubiquitous, like a few Courreges and something else I’m forgetting–but I didn’t want to make a hasty decision. Needs to be a next time!

    That time of the year…
I was very frugal, based on my usual spending habits. I bought 5 fb this quarter.
    Amouage Silver 100ml
    Amouage Jubilation XXV 100ml
    Amouage Interlude Men 100ml
    Lutens Gris Clair 50ml
    Tom Ford Grey Vetiver 100ml

I did pre-order A*Men Pure Wood (and might also get Pure Coffee) which has not arrived yet, so it will be for next quarter and I am still hunting for an export bottle of Borneo 1834- who knows when I’ll finally get that-if ever!

I’ll prefix my confession by saying that only one bottle was full price and I didn’t buy any samples or decants this quarter. Except for the split that hasn’t arrived yet. Doesn’t count 😉

Jungle L’Elephant (A wonder of a kitchen sink scent. Yum!)
    Theorema (Discontinued – doesn’t count)
Shalimar parfum initial l’eau si sentuelle (Limited edition & discontinued: Doesn’t count. BTW, SPILSS is on frag…net for under $40 right now. Same juice as parfum initial l’eau)
    Shalimar Parfum Initial (discontinued –
    Doesn’t count)
Wit (Birthday present from my dog. He had a coupon. Doesn’t count)
Angel parfum de cuir (saving for winter – doesn’t count)
Iris Nobile EDP (had to qualify for a GWP & my only full pricer)
    Silences Mini pdt
Ralph Lauren Safari – blind buy win thanks to the enablers on NSTers
Red Door Parfum mini because it’s my mom’s signature scent.

2-4 bottles, depending on accounting. 2 were Goodwill–a vintage-ish White Shoulders and Love & Toast Paper Flower. The WS was mostly for nostalgia’s sake, and both are likely to end up in a swap (or at least decants) some time along the way.

The big purchase was a bottle of MDCI Vepres Sicilliennes (headless), which I bought on vacation in Vancouver, Canada. It is pretty, easy-to-wear, and not quite as long-lasting as I would hope for the money. But it serves as a nice reminder of the trip.

Other purchase is a 15mL bottle of Reglisse Noir, which I am wearing today. I also like it and wish it lasted longer, but it was pretty darned affordable, so I don’t complain!

With all the nice older ladies up here in the Poconos, you’d think there’d be secret stashes of very vintage bottles at our Goodwill/Salvation Army when they or their families clean out the house and move to Florida or make it to the great perfume counter in the sky. But nada. It is so depressing thinking something wonderful ended up in the trash. I know somewhere up here there is an unloved bottle of Djedi or Coty Chypre hiding in some cedar chest!

For this quarter I bought a bottle of Si Lolita edp and about a half a bottle of vintage Ellen Tracy from Ebay for myself and a bottle of Bulgari Black tester for my Dad’s birthday gift ( his fav).
I’ve got a few other things (a couple of vintage bottles that were gifts) and some Pecksniff’s Pumpkin seed and Pecan hand soap( three bottles so far…) highly recommend btw. About $5 each.
I can’t remember if I reported buying the Queen gift set at TJMaxx for 12 or not but I tend towards the perfume acquisition amnesia.and Burberry the Beat for $11. I also got free samples ( some look more like small decants from the Jeffery Dame perfumery Fragrantica drawing).

Ok, so I was bad – but I will also begin by saying (in my defense) that I didn’t pay full price for anything.

C&E Tarocco Orange (on sale for about $20)
Dior Eau Noire (from discounter for well under $200)
Gres Cabochard (from discounter for $25)
Lancolm Mille et Une Roses (discounter for $70)
Santa Maria Novella Melograno (prices cut to $50)
Dior Homme EDT 50ml (on sale for $49)

No, I’m not going to add it up…

I have been living in Canada for the past year, where there is very limited access to niche perfumery, so when I returned to the US at the end of August, there was a lot of pent-up demand, let us say. I have been exceedingly bad, in the 15+ bottle cateory, but aside from the ill-fated purchase of Rose Kashmirie mentioned above, I am very happy with all my purchases. 🙂

July started out modestly enough with a set of four 15 ml. Hermes perfumes and an 8 ml decant of Diptyque Vetyverio. Then August and September were just out of control. I bought two back-ups for favorites that were dc’d: PdN L’Eau a la Folie and AdP Iris Nobile EDT. I finally bought Amouage Lyric after several years of using samples. Then I felt I also needed bottles of Fleurs de Sel and Guerlain Parure. Added three(!) more Hermes travel sizes and three more decants. Totals up to 9 (at least) or 11 depending on how the decants and travel Hermes are counted. Yikes!

For some reason I have spent a lot of time on the online auction sites this past quarter. Bought three bottles in the first two quarters, ended up with four this one: Tom Ford Violet Blonde, my Hermes eaux coffret (orange vert, mandarine ambrée and narcisse bleu – counted as one bottle), JHAG Miss Charming and a blindbought Grey Flannel aftershave. Very happy with all purchases. Seriously considering my first backup buy: Infusion d’Iris Absolue.

May I ask you why you feel that you need a back-up bottle now? Is this one a flanker (rather than a perfume from the regular line-up)? I’m asking because I thought of buying it once my regular Infusion d’Iris bottle is empty. But your post made me worrying 🙂

I forgot to list my Vent Vert – I did get a mini this past quarter. You have some greatness on your list!

I only bought one bottle, it was Guerlain AA Flora Nymphea for $24.99 at Ross. It was a blind buy, which was a bit $$ for a blind buy for me generally but Ive been wanting to try this one for a while and thought why not 🙂 I like it, its very easy to wear and pretty on me.

I believe I got one or two bottles at most..a sample and a decant. I am proud..or perhaps I was just busy with summer stuff to care about perfumes as much..

but think I spent…about 70 bucks max. Donatella is either proud or rolling her eyes, not sure:).

Only one full bottle this quarter! Wow. I’ve tested a lot more and and I feel like I’ve bought a lot of samples, but that’s what thebank statement says – only one bottle of DelRae Amoureuse. I coveted it for a long time, and thank god for Luckyscent! Okay, mea culpa, it was $175. But I don’t regret one bit. Besides, compared to other quarters this is positively frugal for me.
But generally, I’ve been shopping in my perfume box. So nice to rediscover some of the stuff I haven’t worn in ages, feels like a whole new purchase. Where have you been, my Mito? Haven’t seen you in a while, Parure! Maharanih, you’re a dazzling beauty!

Amoureuse is an excellent choice if you are going to do it!

Shopping your own perfume selection is fun, isn’t it? I always find some gem I’d forgotten about.

Amoureuse is my favourite by Delrae, and one of my favourite fragrances.

I won’t even say. It was a lot. But I only buy bottles every 18 months or so, all at one time. Listing them would be horrific….but here are the highlights:
Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar, Les Parisiennes Mademoiselles, L’Heure De Nuit, Nuit D’Amour, Tokyo, Spiriteuese Double Vanille
Ormonde Jayne Qi Travel Set, Orris Noir Travel Set
MFK Lumiere Noire, Amyris, Aqua Vitae
Chanelle Cristal EDT (the scent of my teen years….memories!!)
    Ormonde Jayne Frangipani Parfum

Interesting buying strategy– not sure I could hold off buying perfume for 18 months. I am weak.

It forces me to use bottles I already have , and helps me work through that ‘Ooo sounds good!’ Blind buy thing……the space between is when I buy samples and small decants.

It’s amazing how when you put some space between that initial rush of, “Ooooo I love it!” and actually pulling out the credit card, how many fall by the wayside.

Nada, zero, zip. But – not that Donatella cares – I recovered three chairs, which turned out to be way more expensive than perfume. I even justified the expense of quilting the already expensive fabric for one chair by promising myself that I’d sell one of my bottles (partial) of Iris Ganache. That’s some desperation!!

I did’t remember buying anything but it turns out I bought a 30ml bottle of Kenzo Jungle l’elephant for about $30 bucks, 8mls of Coromandel and 10mls of Afternoon of a Fawn. So my total was under $80 with shipping costs included.

I bought a bottle of Amouage Opus VI and Wode by Boudicca…..still pining for Noir Epices/Roudnitska/FMalle. I’ll wear Tobacco Vanille from a recent sample……it’s cold out today and I want to feel warm!

I finally bought two that I’d been wanting for a long time:

    L’Artisan – Séville à l’ Aube
    Diptyque – Oyedo

    And a backup of:

    Lush – 1000 Kisses

(It seems to be discontinued, I wear it a lot and it was a great deal!)
